Artists and Artisans of Guatemala

Relief Prints, Drawings, and Photos by Marilyn Anderson

Lavery Library was honored to present this exhibit February 5 – March 13, 2009.

Ms. Anderson displayed over 40 examples of her work in Lavery’s Lower Level Gallery. The opening reception brought art enthusiasts from across the Rochester area to admire the prints, drawings, textiles and photos, speak with the artist, and enjoy some Guatemalan inspired refreshments. On the evening of February 17, Ms. Anderson shared photo slides of her experiences in Guatemala with the community. Over 65 students, faculty, and community members were in attendance. The artist brought examples of Guatemalan artisan work, including string bags, rope, embroidery, and paper craft, making it a tactile as well as visual experience.

...and now we are going to get it!

Those warm days we were itching for all winter and spring are now upon us. Problem is, the library's cooling tower is being replaced and now we have no air conditioning through the end of August.

We will remain open Monday--Friday from 8:30 am-4:30 pm, and Saturday--Sunday from 11:00 am-7:00 pm.

We will make every effort to reach out to students and faculty on campus and provide retrieval and/or delivery services. Call us for delivery options!

Reference and library instruction will be available via email, online through our virtual reference service, AskUs 24/7, or you can make an appointment. We will even come to your classes for instruction! Reference librarians and circulation staff can also be reached by phone.

Computers and printing are available in the Kearney Lab.

Thanks to the support and assistance of the Office of Campus Life, Security and OIT, we have set up an alternate work site for library staff in the SGA offices. We will still be working hard on the same projects and enhancements that we normally are: receiving and processing new materials, providing reference service, checking out materials to library users, and updating many areas of the library.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with questions or requests. We are still here for you!

At least, not where you used to see them. The next time you go looking for your favorite feature film, don't head downstairs. We have created a section on the Main Floor titled Leisure Videos (near the area formerly known as the Language Lab) for all of the popular film and television series that we have been buying in the last few years. We hope it will make it easier for you to check out some of your favorites while we make room in the Givens center for our new smart classroom. If you are looking for a documentary or academic video, you'll find those on the Upper Level by call number. Now, all the books, journals, and videos on a particular subject can be found together!

Sarah Freligh, adjunct professor of English, recently published a book of poems revealing the gritty truth about America's favorite pastime. Read Sort of Gone at Lavery Library.

Moving and shaking (and hammering...)

Things change daily here at Lavery. Take a look at our Flickr page for some updated photos of a room that used to be the Library Director's office but will now become a meeting room. This room used to be so dark and unappealing, and just taking down some shelving and heavy draperies has changed the mood of the room considerably! Also undergoing work this week is our current Library Director's office. Bookcases came down here, as they were covering the entire back wall. This room will now have more light and space. Lastly, you can view some "after" photos of what used to be called the Language Lab. The computers and workstations are still there, for now, but the glass wall that separated this room from the rest of the main floor is gone, in anticipation of new and different things to come.

Lavery Library construction update:

If you haven’t been in the Library yet today, you've missed all the action! You may see a construction crew working in the Library in the next few weeks, demolishing right before your very eyes! Please pardon our dust and noise as we embark on the next phase of our plan to continue to make your Lavery Library a friendly, bright, open usable space.Take a look at some pictures here.

The Language Lab wall is down and the Language Lab has been temporarily relocated 2 doors down from the current lab on the main level. The computers will be back online soon.

Some of the other projects that will be completed in the next few weeks are:

Consolidating the Library's Special Collections/Archives materials into one room on the Upper Level (the former Genesee Country Room)
Remodeling the former Library Director’s office on the Main Level to become a meeting room
Removing outdated cabinetry in a staff area to provide more work space, which will help us work even harder for you!
Relocating a wall to accommodate a librarian’s office and more Special Collections/Archives on the Lower Level.
