It’s too Late to be Salty

Oh the auto industry, the auto industry, the auto industry. When AIG executives had a lavish retreat at a California resort days after they received our tax money nothing happened. Automotive executives fly to congressional hearings in private planes and everyone’s up in arms. If the automotive industry fails it is not the CEO’s who would hurt.

Was this Henry Ford’s vision? Innovation replaced with corporatism? As the 2006 documentary was so aptly entitled “Who Killed the Electric Car?”

If you have read any of my past blogs you know I not one to belabor a point, so here is the crux of the issue. I know most people like me feel duped by the passing of the October 1st bank bail out package. However, I implore you to realize that the auto industry package is different from that debacle. The failure of the American auto industry will affect at least ten percent of workers in the United States. The auto industry accounts for five percent of the United States gross domestic product and sixteen percent of all durable goods shipments.

Understand that the effect of a failed automotive industry would extend far beyond Detroit. Do not forget the suppliers, the American factory workers and the Mexican factory workers. Can Mexico with stand another failed business within its boarders?

In 2007 Toyota’s Camry retailing at about $16,000 was the number one selling car in America. In 2008 the Honda Civic retailing at about $15,500 was the number one selling car in the country. What would happen to the price of these foreign cars in the United States if they had no competition from Ford, GM or Chrysler?

It is too late to reconcile what has happened with the banking industry but being angry with the automotive companies will not solve that problem.

Though its only been about a week since the collapsed school disaster struck Haiti, by now it is considered old news. Every time I turn around something terrible happens to my family's country. I hope for the day when Haiti will return to the days of glorified travel and restore its respect in the world as the First Black Republic. What has this beautiful nation done to deserve such repeated atrocities?

PETIONVILLE, Haiti (AP) — Angry Haitians stormed the twisted wreckage of a collapsed school on Sunday to demand rescuers speed up a search for victims, while officials worried about the stability of other buildings across this desperately poor country.

The collapse, which crushed at least 88 students and adults in a slum below a relatively wealthy enclave near Port-au-Prince, has brought global attention to a country where chronic poverty and unrest spawn chaotic jigsaws of neighborhoods and building codes are widely ignored.

A friend of mine made a connection with an honest Haitian organization that works on-ground to deliver goods to Haitians devastated by the continual disasters. Though this organization was set up initially for the Hurricane disasters, I have no doubt that these women will get your donations to those in need.

Exhileration. Hopefulness. Joy. Tears. Optimism. Exhaustion. So many words that can't begin to describe that moment. From the buildings in midtown New York City to the brownstones in Brooklyn (seriously--no metaphor) you can hear the sounds of joy, and the chants of "Yes We Can" in the wee hours of the morning. There is a magic in the air right now that is monumental, and indescribable. We were part of that moment.

As Breast Cancer Awarness Month comes to an end for this year, the battle to beat this vicious disease continues on.

Marisa Acocella Marchetto, breast cancer survivor and author of Cancer Vixen and C.O. Bigelow came together to create some goodies that help to support breast cancer research. It's official. Anything a man can do a woman can do better. But we already knew that. Be it his oversized stripped button down or his tube socks, a girl just looks better wearing his clothes. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has officially endorsed Barack Obama for President during a taping of Meet The Press. Can this simply be genuine party-line crossing, or Powell's symbolic "F-U" at being the scapegoat as he was forced to report his "findings" of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Either way, his impact is tremendous.

I've never been too much of a jeans person. Not that I don't like the look of jeans, but finding the right style is such a tragic exercise in disappointment that I rarely venture out to even try on a pair. Last night, Tracy and I went out to a Levi's event to check out the new fall line. Not that I'd try on anything. Or so I thought.

I wholly expected to view a collection of restyled denim jeans, but what surprised at the earthy accessories, and outerwear. I even liked the look of a pair of wide-legged jeans, though I honestly didn't see myself in them.

After sipping on some champagne, I finally mustered up the courage to grab a few trendy pairs and dashed off to the dressing room. Staring at the pile, I figured, what the hell, same story, different day.

And then I found these.

Levi's Tilted Trouser Jeans, $78

These jeans were so soft, and utterly comfortable that I had to have them. The straight-cut was what I yearned for after seasons of suffocating skinny styles. My legs looked long, lean, and graceful. I think my butt even said a hallelujah.
