It was surprising to see a guy singing one of famous Michael Jackson songs “Billie Jean“.

Actually, it was a while ago and hada number of viewers as well as those who discussed is it real or fake.

Well, first of all, check the first video, which I am talking about right now:

A few nights ago, I was riding the train on my way back home from a New York City trip and I had the chance to read an interesting article explaining the reasons why more Americans are surviving their struggle against cancer, published in the April/May issue of AARP: The Magazine. New drugs, targeted treatments and continuous research have increased the chances of cure and survival.

I was glad to read the good news but I began to wonder if Latinos were being affected by this disease at higher rates. I did some digging and this is what I found:

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), cancer “is the second leading cause [of death] among Hispanics, accounting for 20 percent of deaths overall and 13 percent in children.” Moreover, the probability of developing any type of cancer among Hispanics over the age of 40 increases to 1 in 17 for men and 1in 14 for women (Compared to 1 in 87 and 1in 58 respectively for Hispanics 39 years old and younger) These figures show that we still have a long way ahead on rooting out cancer from our community.

The future prosperity of everyone living in Arizona depend on the states’ ability to educate the growing number of Latinos, according to report released last week by the Morrison Institute for Public Policy, a nonpartisan think tank at Arizona State University.

In 2009, 69 percent of Hispanics graduated from high school, compared to 89 percent of whites.

If nothing is done to close the educational achievement gap, the number of Arizona adults with less than a high school education could rise from around 524,000 in 2010 to nearly 858,000 in 2030, according to the report. About 78 percent of those people will be Latino.

Those Latinos will suffer the financial consequences, the report notes, and so will the rest of the state.

Latinos already earn less than whites in Arizona. As Hispanics comprise a greater share of the population, Arizonans’ average incomes could drop, touching off a cascade of bad economic news.

Lower incomes would lead to a drop in purchasing power, which would drag down economic growth and tax revenues, according to the report. Lower tax revenues place additional strain on state budgets and services.

The report recommends that Arizonans invest in the educations of young Latinos, making high-quality early childhood programs available to everyone. The suggested strategy is to implement them first in Latino neighborhoods, then improving the pipeline that moves Latino high school students into higher education, particularly in high-tech field.

Triple threat Selena Gomez is now making another one of her dreams a reality.

Fresh out of her performance last week on Dancing with the Stars, where she sang her latest single “Hit the Lights,” Gomez is finally confirming she is releasing her first Spanish-language album.

Fans have long been awaiting a Spanish-language record from the Latina singer, who for the past few months has been focusing on her acting career.

In a recent interview with hollywoodlife.com, Gomez confirmed that the Spanish-language album is not only in the works but is actually finished–although a release date has not been set.

“It’s at an in-between stage, because I still want to put out a fourth record and also the Spanish record,” Gomez told the site.

LatinaLista — Long before I read today’s Nielsen report that outlined, among other things, that the language to reach the Latino market was Spanish, I knew that Nielsen wasn’t alone in their “assumption.”

When asked by Pew Hispanic researchers what language they think in, only first-generation Latinos responded in the majority to Spanish.

The White House seems to think that the way to reach Latino voters is also through Spanish.

Consider this stat: when Enrique Acevedo interviewed President Obama for the “Al Punto” program that ran Sunday, it marked the 15th time the president had been interviewed by Univision… That’s far more interviews than the cable news networks have grabbed, and not that far off from the number of interviews with ABC (24), CBS (23, including David Letterman) and NBC (21, including Jay Leno)…

In fact, when the general media/public thinks about the U.S. Latino market, they automatically assume Spanish is the language ALL Latinos speak, understand and prefer, thanks to reports like Nielsen and Univision’s claim that they reach “97% of U.S. Hispanic households.”

PHOENIX (AP) — An audio recording has surfaced of an Arizona sheriff playing his refusal to cooperate in a racial profiling investigation for laughs at a fundraiser for an anti-illegal immigration group in Texas. He ridicules politicians who sought the probe and displayed contempt toward federal authorities who were — and are still — investigating him on two fronts.

The dismissive comments in 2009 by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio came as the U.S. Justice Department had already launched a civil rights probe of his trademark immigration patrols and the FBI already was examining abuse-of-power allegations for the sheriff’s investigations of political foes.

In the September 2009 speech in Houston, Arpaio boasted that he arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants after politicians and federal investigators started to pick apart his patrols. He said he wouldn’t cooperate with the inquiry, but said he would tone down the patrols — if he was proven wrong.

“But I’m not. After they went after me, we arrested 500 more just for spite,” the self-proclaimed “America’s toughest sheriff” said, pausing for laughter and applause.

In a rare and forceful act of advocacy, an Iowa newspaper devoted the entire front page of its Sunday edition to an anti-bullying editorial after a gay teen committed suicide.

Relatives have said 14-year-old Kenneth Weishuhn Jr. suffered intense harassment, including threatening cellphone calls and nasty comments posted online, after coming out to family and friends about a month ago. He died April 15 from what the local sheriff’s office described only as a “self-inflicted injury.”

The Sioux City Journal’s front-page opinion piece calls on the community to be pro-active in stopping bullying and urges members to learn more about the problem by seeing the acclaimed new film, “Bully,” which documents the harassment of a Sioux City middle school student. It notes that while many students are targeted for being gay, “we have learned a bully needs no reason to strike.”

“In Kenneth’s case, the warnings were everywhere,” the editorial said. “We saw it happen in other communities, now it has hit home. Undoubtedly, it wasn’t the first life lost to bullying here, but we can strive to make it the last.”

Former WBA flyweight champion Luis Concepcion (24-3, 19KOs) will return to the ring in the month of June. He plans to make a defense of his WBC Latino flyweight title. The opponent is unknown, but his team is indicating that Concepcion is going to face a Colombian opponent who is ranked in the top 15 within the WBC. The only Colombian boxer ranked within the top 15, at flyweight, is Anuar Salas (11-1, 9KOs).

“I’m training every day because I want to be world champion again,” said Concepcion. “I’m preparing myself thoroughly because I know that is the only way to reclaim my crown. I will be a world champion again, but this time under the WBC.”

Every day, around 1,600 U.S. citizens of Latin American extraction are turning 18, voting age, and add to the fastest-growing segment of the American electorate. Almost 22 million Latinos will be eligible to vote in November and how many of them turn out may well decide who will be the next U.S. president.

A series of recent polls show that Latinos favor President Barack Obama over any of the Republican presidential hopefuls, with a comfortable 70 percent to 14 percent over Mitt Romney, the man most likely to win the Republican nomination at the end of a primary campaign marked by often shrill anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Obama is so confident that he primary debates have driven Latinos away from the Republican party that he told the Spanish-language television network Univision last November there was no need for his campaign to run negative ads on the Republican presidential hopefuls. Instead, “we may just run clips of the Republican debates verbatim. We won’t even comment on them…and people can make up their own minds.”

Among debate highlights that stick in the collective memory was the electrified Mexican-U.S. border fence suggested by Herman Cain, who soon after dropped out of the race, and Mitt Romney’s idea that illegal immigrants would chose “self-deportation

Democratic state legislators from the Southwest followed President Obama’s example on Wednesday by putting the “radical” label on GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s agenda as they blasted the candidate’s immigration stance.

State Reps. Trey Martinez Fischer of Texas, Crisanta Duran of Colorado and Ruben Gallego of Arizona condemned Romney during a conference call organized by the Democratic National Committee for aligning himself with some of the most anti-immigrant voices in his party.

“If Mitt Romney intends to go after President Obama on immigration, he has a problem: Latinos have been following Romney’s extreme policies, and he has zero credibility with our community,” Duran said.

The state legislators at the same time described President Obama as an “ally” and “friend” of the Hispanic community, which has traditionally been at the center of the immigration debate.

The “radical” characterization of Romney appeared on the state legislators’ par langue only a day after Obama used it to denounce the current Republican vision on the country, which the president said “is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity.”

Martinez Fischer attacked Romney specifically for the candidate’s promise to veto the DREAM Act – a bill that would provide lawful status to undocumented immigrants who graduate from college or enroll in the military – should Congress pass it.

“Let’s just make it very clear. Ninety one percent of Latinos support the DREAM Act,” Martinez Fischer said. “Translation: Romney is out of step with 91 percent of Latinos in this country.”
