A team of LLB students from The City Law School reached the
grand final of the 'Game On' Competition, a challenge for
university students designed by international law firm Allen &
Overy.

The team from City, consisting of Ben Fellows, Ben Lowen, Alex
Wagg, and Joe Peak, had to compete against 48 teams from other UK
universities. After finishing at the top of the leader board in the
preliminary rounds of the contest, the students went through to the
grand final in April. The team did not win but received praise
from Allen & Overy Partner, David Campbell.

Campbell told the City team: "I can honestly say that I would be
happy to work with any of you as part of a negotiating team." He
encouraged the contestants to pursue a career in commercial law as
well as offering them his contact details.

The Competition was created to provide an insight into
commercial law and to highlight the key skills needed to become a
successful solicitor. Campbell described the Game On exercise as a
simplified example of the negotiations solicitors had to deal with
on a regular basis.

Claire de Than, LLB Programme Director says: "Congratulations,
to the City team for making it so far into the competition and
representing The City Law School so effectively."

The final of the Blackstone Mooting Competition took place on 22
April 2009, and was judged by Robert Englehart QC. The four
finalists were Beverley Cottrell, Simon Ralph, James Sharpe and
Christopher Geering. They all demonstrated outstanding skill and
were a credit to the School. Christopher won the competition and
Simon was the runner-up, both receiving a cash prize that was
generously donated by Blackstone Chambers. They will now be going
on to represent the School at the inter-provider Peters and Peters
Mooting Competition, to be judged by Lord Neuberger.
Congratulations to them both, and to the other finalists.

Advocacy of the highest standard was demonstrated by all the
students who entered, and the finalists were no exception. The
competition could not have taken place without the help of the
staff who acted as judges - Stuart Sime, Peter Hungerford-Welch,
Linda Duenas, Suzanne Reece, Stuart Lindsay, Robert McPeake, Paul
McKeown, Marcus Soanes and Catherine Hill.

Former Justice of the High Court of Australia, Michael Kirby,
will visit City University to talk about some of the resistence he
has faced in pioneering international law over common law in human
rights cases.

Michael Kirby will explore the growing impact of international
law (especially the international law of human rights) on local
common law, and will explain the way in which the Human Rights Act
1998 (UK) has affected the impact of international law on English
common law. Taking into account his own experience Michael Kirby
will then describe the resistance, even hostility, to this impact
in Australian decisions and the way in which this attitude has been
modified following the critical turning point taken by the High
Court in the Mabo Case (1992) on Abriginal land rights.

Venue: The Oliver Thompson Lecture Theatre,
City University London, Northampton Square. Registration from

"These awards celebrate the business and management skills
of those running universities across the UK. They aim to champion
the innovation, management skills and commercial acumen displayed
by the sector. Judges are looking for outstanding examples of best
practice in 2008"

The City Law School's distinguished history as a provider of
legal education charts a long commitment to new ideas and
innovation in the study and practice of law. The law school's
library team embodies this commitment in its own unique way. 2008
saw the launch of two major new websites by the law library team,
innovations that had a significant impact on the library's support
of teaching and learning activities, and the marketing and
operation of the law school itself.

Lawbore Professional was developed by
the library team at Gray's Inn Place to serve students training to

programmes. <a href=

Both web sites built on the outstanding success of Lawbore,
originally launched in 2003.

These initiatives have been recognised and shortlisted for an
award in the Outstanding Library Team category of the Leadership
and Management Awards. The City Law School's library team is joined
by five other university library teams from across the UK and the
winner will be announced at a ceremony to take place in June at
London's Hilton Hotel, Park Lane.

The City Law School, perhaps uniquely amongst higher education
institutions, provides an extensive package of learning and support
to all its students - from first degree level right through to
those newly qualified and entering professional practice.
