UK angler Record 245lb catfish caught

The biggest Wels catfish ever caught by a British angler has been taken by Jon Avery in the form of this 245lb specimen from the River Segre in Spain.

The colossal fish was the result of the 31-year-old Somerset-based rod’s only bite of his week session with CatMaster Tours fishing a stretch of the waterway at Mequinenza.

After locating a 14ft trench at 100yds range with the use of an echo sounder he offered four large hair-rigged halibut pellets over a couple of handfuls of freebies, and received the all-important bite on the second day.

“It didn’t scream off like you’d expect a fish of its size to do, and the only indication I had was a couple of bleeps on the alarm,” he said.

“As soon as I lifted into it, though, it felt like nothing I’d experienced before. The only way I can describe it is as if someone had tied my line to a car and driven off. It made several runs to try to reach a set of snags towards the far bank but thankfully I just about managed to stop it before it got to them. When it was around 50yds from the bank it rolled on the surface and we could all see it was a huge fish. I’ve caught catfish to 19lb in the UK but when we got this on the bank I had no idea how big it was."

The guides were all very excited though, and when we weighed it at 245lb I was delighted to hear that it was not only the biggest cat to be caught with the guiding company but also the biggest by a British angler anywhere in the world.”

On a recent session at Mar-Peche in France, Bill Phillips broke the venue record with this huge 78lb 15oz mirror carp.

The 62-year-old Wiltshire-based retired production manager broke his pb by over 23lb with the impressive specimen, which he fooled with a brazil nut tipped with a piece of fake corn.

This was fished in a weedy bay at 40yds range on a long 3ins hair on a size 8 Korda Wide Gape hook and a 20lb Kryston Super-Silk hooklink over a bed of hemp and nuts.

New canned tuna ranking in Australia

Greenpeace Australia’s latest canned tuna ranking was launched this week at the Sydney Aquarium and contains some exciting new developments for Australia’s canned tuna industry.

The organisation announced that Safcol is the first Australian company to commit to a 100% sustainable tuna product. Greenpeace says that shifting this major tuna brand is a massive win and is thanks to the thousands of concerned consumers who wrote to tuna companies urging them to end their role in the fishing crisis.

Most tuna brands have now ruled out selling overfished yellowfin tuna, which Greenpeace says is a step up from its last canned tuna ranking.

Despite these improvements, the organisation says that nearly every Australian tuna brand refuses to rule out destructive fishing methods, which it says are responsible for the widespread destruction of marine life, such as endangered sharks and turtles, as well as juvenile tuna.

In contrast, every major tuna player in the UK has swapped destructive fishing methods for sustainable ones, following consumer pressure.

WWF and Greenpeace called for Illegal fishing plans for Libyan waters

WWF and Greenpeace have called for the forthcoming industrial purse-seine bluefin tuna fishing season in the Mediterranean Sea to be suspended.

The groups sent an urgent request to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the organisation that manages the fishery.

The call follows a late intervention from Libya that it will now allow fishing in its waters despite having no agreed fishing plan for the season. This would make any fishing activity by Libyan fleets illegal, according to ICCAT rules. The current unrest in Libya means there is no chance of effective monitoring and enforcement of the fishery in its waters, risking fatally undermining an internationally agreed recovery plan for the severely overfished species.

There are reports that several Libyan vessels, legally unauthorised to fish for bluefin, have left Malta bound for Libyan waters. Greenpeace and WWF share the belief that ICCAT member states should have prevented their departure.

Both organisations have reminded the French government of its particular responsibilities, since 10 Libyan-flagged purse seine fishing vessels are owned by French interests. Illegal Libyan vessels are now ready to set sail for the Libyan fishing zone from European ports in France (Sète) and Malta.

“Tough times require tough measures,” said Dr Sergi Tudela, Head of Fisheries at WWF Mediterranean. “The painstaking and fragile achievements of the last years are endangered by the maverick attitude of a small minority. Responsible members of ICCAT must rally to do what is necessary to save this species and fishery. Only vigorous action now can prevent Atlantic bluefin tuna from plunging into a new Dark Age before it has even emerged from the last one.”

“Unless members of ICCAT take urgent action they will appear more determined than ever to undermine the management plans that at best will give Mediterranean bluefin a few years to survive,” said Sebastian Losada, Greenpeace International Oceans Policy Advisor. “If we want bluefin tomorrow, ICCAT must control the fishery – this is currently impossible in Libyan waters. This means ICCAT member countries must agree to suspend the fishery to protect their own plans to recover the species.”

The letter also urged ICCAT members to take decisive action to prevent illegally caught bluefin tuna from entering global seafood markets, by better monitoring fishing and caging in the Mediterranean.

The demands from the two groups follow Libya’s announcement that it will engage in illegal fishing for bluefin tuna this year, ignoring ICCAT’s request to avoid tuna fishing in Libyan waters, as the current political situation there would make monitoring and enforcement of fishing activities impossible.... In a new report, Greenpeace has revealed how Spain is “repeatedly and systematically overlooking illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing by its huge fleet throughout European waters and beyond”.

The report, titled Ocean Inquirer, takes as a case study one Galician family whose companies have received over €16m in subsidies from European taxpayers to fund a long list of criminal activities.

Greenpeace states that the Vidal family’s many ships have been found conducting IUU fishing for decades, right around the world, and been prosecuted in the US, the UK and in the Pacific and the Spanish government have promised on numerous occasions to investigate and put an end to these abuses. But Greenpeace claims that what they have actually done is fund them - with our money.

Spain has the largest fishing fleet in Europe, maintained with billions in subsidies - more than double the amount of subsidies received by any other EU nation. Greenpeace has accused the Spanish fleet of exploiting the CFP to infiltrate the fleets of other European nations and take their fishing quotas.

If Spain, and Europe, continue with business as usual, it is predicted by the EU that less than 10% of our fish stocks will be at sustainable levels by 2022.

Greenpeace’s case study of the Vidal family documents their long history of illegal fishing, their prosecutions and convictions and their frequently successful attempts to avoid justice, and Spain’s continuing failure to deal with an issue which has been raised with them on numerous occasions. It also reveals new evidence on Vidal’s latest business venture, an alleged fish oil factory in Galicia. This factory is not currently operational, many months after its claimed opening date, and yet Greenpeace says it has already earned the Vidal family another €6.5m - in EU subsidies.

Greenpeace oceans campaigner Ariana Densham said, “According to some estimates, up to 49% of the global catch is IUU, and this is one of the reasons why our over-exploited fisheries are in such rapid decline. The fact that in Europe this theft of fish is being subsidised by taxpayers’ money, that we’re actually paying pirates to steal our fish, destroy one of our oldest industries and devastate the marine environment, shows just how corrupted the CFP is.”

Greenpeace is calling for a full EU investigation into subsidies given to the Spanish fishing industry, and for all future subsidies to be given to legal, transparent and sustainable fishing practices, consistent with the CFP’s stated objectives.

In response to this report, European fisheries commissioner Maria Damanaki stated that “The serious allegations are already under investigation by the European Commission and being followed up with the Spanish national authorities. Daiwa Dorking will represent England in next year’s World Club Championship after winning the two day qualifier on Newark Dyke.

Just weeks after victory in the Angling Times Team Champs final, they took the split match, which was sponsored by Preston and attended by the top 10 finishing teams in the Division 1 National, with a 42 point score. This was comfortably in front of Browning Hotrods on 53 and Kamasan Starlets on 55.

Hotrods’ Tim Nash won the event individually with a perfect two section wins, ironically after drawing the same peg both days!

Carsington Fishery, Derbyshire

After the very windy weather passed through the fishing picked up and a lot of anglers caught including Mr Cook with an excellent 4lb 8oz rainbow. The best brown of 2lb 2oz was caught by P. Lightbound using a Montana near Upperfields Bay. The rod average for the week was 2.2 with 107 fish caught by 48 anglers.

Areas that have fished well have been along the dam wall and around Upperfields Bay. A lot of anglers had success while fishing on the drift in the main basin either towards the far side or towards Stone’s Island depending on the wind direction.

Successful flies include Orange Blobs, Montanas, goldheads, Sedge and black and green patterns. Floating lines and dry flies also proved popular.

Carsington hosted a competition for Foremark Fly Fishers that was won by Guy Hilliard with a total bag weight of 10lb 4oz. The biggest fish of 2lb 4oz was caught by Merv Amos using a dry fly.

Derwent, Northumberland

The reservoir is now benefitting from a rise in water levels which has introduced some cooler well oxygenated water. The fish are now hard on to the feed, particularly near the feeder streams where some great catches have been recorded. Fly anglers report the banks above the sailing club and Cronkley as particular hotspots. Intermediate lines with lures are now the best methods.

George Wind was one of the anglers to enjoy some frantic sport taking eight fish from above the sailing club on a small White Booby on a fast sinking line. Youngster Owen Wright, from Cramlington, used worm with trout pellets in a feeder to land the best fish of the week from Pow Hill at 5lb 8oz.

After the recent introduction of six tiger trout no one has claimed any of the several £400 jackpots currently available. During October and November last year records show 11 tigers were landed so now could be the time to land one.

Best flies are Dawson’s Olive, Cat’s Whisker, Black and Green Fritz, White and Orange Boobies.

Eyebrook Trout Fishery, Leicestershire

THE Steve Owen organised Police Pairs Match was fished by forces representing Leicestershire, Cheshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, West Mercia, West Midlands, Northants, Manchester and Lincolnshire and 48 anglers caught a total of 173 trout, giving a rod average of 3.6

Eventual winners were Graham Homer and Roy Taylor representing West Midlands with 16 trout for 37lb. Runners-up were Bob Eaton and Lee Tones representing Leicestershire with 16 fish for 35lb, and in third place were Gary Fowles and Dave Allen of Cheshire Police with 16 fish for 33lb 13oz. The heaviest rainbow of the competition fell to the rod of Dave Richardson representing Leicestershire, a super rainbow of 6lb 8oz.

The inaugural competition between the English Disabled Fly Fishers and the Eyebrook Regulars saw 24 anglers take a total of 91 trout. The biggest fish weighed in at 6lb 9oz and was taken by Brian Frith. The English Disabled Fly Fishers accumulated a catch of 94lb, but were beaten by The Regulars who took 120lb 12oz. It is hoped this competition will now become an annual event on the Eyebrook calendar.

Andy Wain, of Alford, boat fished accompanied by his wife Andrea. Andy caught a super rainbow estimated to weigh between 12-13lb on a dry Sedge off Robbos Cabin. A picture was taken before the fish was carefully returned.

Boat fishing ceases on Sunday October 30, when the Boat Fur and Feather competition takes place. For details call the fishing lodge on 01536 772930. Restricted bank fishing will then be available until Sunday November 27 and daily winter permits will be issued for this period.

Early morning or evening sessions should be well worth a go with floating lines, Buzzers or Diawl Bachs. Also try CdC Emergers, Foam-back Daddies, Bob’s Bits, and Hoppers, not forgetting fry patterns.

Foremark Trout Fishery, Derbyshire

Fishing continues to improve with 182 rods catching a total of 982 fish this week. 633 fish were returned giving a rod average of 5.3 for the week. Bank anglers catching more regularly again this week with Verdon’s Point and Hut Point producing well. A good number of fish are high in the water and taking Diawl Bachs, Crunchers, Damsels, Silver Invicta and dries. One or two fish are now starting to feed on the fry, so Minkies and Booby Minkies are worth a try. Water levels are still on the way down allowing plenty of room on the banks. Best areas for the boats have been down Carvers Arm, Cascade, Gorse Bushes, boils, car park bay.

Priory angling club made their annual trip down from Scotland and had a good day with 12 rods catching 82 fish. Erwood AC also had their annual match this week with a rod average of three.

Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire

Boat and bank anglers are enjoying good sport with the bank anglers having superb sport by fishing the margins at the southern end of the dam on floating lines with Diawl Bachs, Hare’s Ears, Shrimp patterns and small black nymphs. Gaynes Cove, G Buoy, the Willows and Deep Water Point also produced consistent fishing on similar methods.

Season ticket holder Rick Barlow, of Rickmansworth, caught and released 20 trout from the south end of the dam by fishing a floating line with red holographic Diawl Bachs.

The productive areas for boat anglers have been Gaynes Cove, G Buoy, off the dam, Rectory Bay, Deep Water Point and Pylon Point. Best method has been midge tip lines with Diawl Bachs, Crunchers, black nymphs, Hare’s Ears and white lures. Valley Creek and the Stumps also produced some good fishing but these areas have not been as consistent as the areas along the eastern and northern shores.

Trout taken from the western end of the reservoir have been feeding on snails whereas the trout caught at the eastern end have mainly been feeding on shrimps or fry.

Best rainbow 5lb taken by Jim Flannigan, of Co Down.

Hanningfield Trout Fishery, Essex

After a very stormy period of weather the fishery is now settling down and giving some fine catches of trout mainly to fly and worm. A charity floating line match in aid of Little Havens Children’s Hospice was well supported with 46 anglers catching 126 trout and raising £1,800 for the charity.

The most consistent method for the fly anglers has been a floating line with a Red Diawl Bach being the best pattern. A close second has been a Cat’s Whisker fished on an intermediate line, and both methods accounted for some quality grown-on fish in the 3-4lb range. Boat anglers found trout feeding close into the main dam wall and near the small bubble line next to the tower. Bank anglers can now fish the natural bank as levels are low enough to allow access by wading. The best catch of the week fell to Mr Linas who caught eight fish for 27lb.

Kielder Water, Northumberland

The reservoir continues to provide good steady sport. I. Parker landed eight rainbows from the bay at Tower Knowe including fish of 3lb and 3lb 8oz caught on Green PowerBait and worm. Eric Coulson fished below the road bridge at Matthews Linn and caught the heaviest fish of the week at 4lb 9oz on worm and sweetcorn. Boat angler Kevin Glendinning fished at the top of the Belling Inlet and also used worm and sweetcorn to tempt a 21lb limit bag. Tower Knowe has been the best area for bank anglers this week where 11 limits were recorded with most of the fish caught on worm.

Best flies are Black Hopper, Zulu, Bibio, Montana Nymph and Cats Whisker.

Pitsford Water, Northamptonshire

In a windy week Will Nash, of Newmarket, caught the best rainbow from the boat, a fine fish of 7lb. Will also caught two other rainbows for a bag weight of 12lb.

Phil Tomlin, of Great Glen, Leicester, gave the rudder a go and caught eight fish for 18lb 14oz. These were all taken on the favoured gold and silver tubes currently working well. Brian House, of Letchworth, boat fished and landed a cracking limit of 20lb 11oz.

Rudder fishing is still proving the best method as the fish start to build weight as winter approaches. With clear water and some large weed beds for coarse fish fry to hide in, using large fry type patterns is proving lethal at present when fished around them. Fish are now starting to take the fry patterns as a food source rather than out of aggression. Boat anglers are starting to catch drifting loch style as well as the rudder method, using smaller type flies like Minkies.

Bank anglers have started to catch with one season permit holder catching four big rainbows off the Stilton Point late one evening.

Ravensthorpe Reservoir, Northamptonshire

Anglers are enjoying some great dry fly sport with fish rising freely in overcast conditions. Black, olive and grey are the best colours and the most successful patterns are Klinkhamer, Hoppers and Bob’s Bits. Boat fishing is by far the most effective with many fish still feeding down the middle of the reservoir.

Drifting and casting a short line is a good option and often the fish will take without any warning and takes can be savage. Andy Kress tempted a 7lb 8oz rainbow on a black and green lure over the aerators.

Graham Smith and Mick Griffin had a cracking morning’s sport taking more than 20 fish between them. This local pair caught several double-figure fish all on dries.

Fishing for Forces had a great day and 24 anglers, many of them new to the sport, took 31 fish. The best fish (3lb 4oz) went to T. P. Cunningham.

Rutland Water, Rutland

Fish seem to be feeding lightly on daphnia, small green buzzer and a few are taking snail, sticklebacks and coarse fry. Julian Hubbard caught a 5lb 5oz rainbow while fishing day one of the Lexus Team final. Bank angler Peter de Kremer recorded a 5lb 2oz rainbow while fishing among the weed beds of the North Arm. One or two browns to 4lb have been caught and a pike angler returned a 6lb 8oz brown from the North Arm.

Boat anglers are fishing the main basin in and around the aerators. They are picking up good fish drifting close to the many weed beds around the shoreline. Bank anglers had good sport along the North Shore of the peninsula/East Creek to the Fishing Lodge. New Zealand Point to the Sailing Club has produced fish as well.

Steady numbers of fish are coming off around the weed beds although not feeding hard, however there is a plentiful larder of food present for them in the form of snails, shrimp, sticklebacks and corixa. There is no sign of fish feeding on daddy longlegs, the only hatches seem to be of small green buzzer and a scattering of olives on overcast days.... READ MORE

Just got back from the Spanish pyrenees where i shot a 3 day Fly fishing adventure as a favor for a very good guide there. All was shot with the NEX-FS100 with original sony lens 18/200. None of the clips have any color corrections !

I posted this uncorrected version for you to see and give your opinion about it... the opening scene was quickly made in Imovie and later introduced in the FCP7 timeline to build the movie.

I’m a huge fan of Danny Fairbrass; his enthusiasm for the sport is undeniably infectious, making him a truly enjoyable character to watch. I’m very happy for him to have nailed the big ‘un from Gigantica, it’s a magnificent looking fish from an equally awesome looking water, well done mate! I dunno what is about Mainline Cell, but I for one am sold on it, having bagged four PB’s on it since I first tried it a year ago. I’d love to know what it is about the bait that gets the carp going on it so hard???

Last year in the UK while fishing a Kent lake I saw first hand some amazing results from its application. Not only from my own PB’s but from my brothers two PB fish as well. In addition to this I witnessed the capture of half a dozen 30lb+ falling to Cell. The clincher was when I fished next to a bloke and his young son in the adjacent swim. Over a 24hr period they landed twenty-two fish on Cell between them, six of which were over twenty, while I boxed on like a proper numpty blanking on a different bait. By the second day of my 48hr sesh I’d had enough, I reeled in and legged it up to the shop and bought a kilo bag of Cell boilies. Shortly after changing baits I had four runs, which turned a completely crap session right around!

EU calls for one-year to banned on cod fishing

The European Commission has called for a ban on cod fishing for the whole of next year off the west coast of Scotland and in the Irish Sea, in an attempt to replenish stocks.

The plan is part of proposed EU catch allowances unveiled yesterday which signal the start of intense haggling over quotas for fishing fleets in the run-up to a final deal in December.

The proposals include increased quotas in 2012 for nine stocks, including haddock, hake, herring, sole as well as cod in some areas, and reduced quotas for 53 stocks.

The package, including the planned freeze on the west of Scotland and Irish cod, amounts to an overall quota cut for all fish of 11 per cent compared with this year – the right level, said the Commission, to help stocks recover and ensure sustainable long-term fishing in Europe.

It includes a 25 per cent increase in the west coast haddock quota thanks to stock recovery, but the Scottish Fisheries Secretary, Richard Lochhead, attacked the rise as "meagre". He insisted the figure was far lower than scientific advice would allow. "Seeing the haddock stock recover to sustainable levels should be a cause for celebration, yet the proposals announced today will only punish the fishermen who have worked so hard on conservation.

"Not only does this penalise our fishermen unnecessarily, but it could also lead to an increase in discarded fish – something both we and the Commission have been working hard to reduce."

In June, the Commission unveiled long-term plans to ban the "discard" practice – the dumping of dead fish back in the sea – as part of a major reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

The discards issue has been publicised across the UK by celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, whose "Hugh's Fish Fight" campaign has been endorsed by such celebrities as Richard Branson, Stephen Fry and Ricky Gervais.

Richard Benyon, the Fisheries minister, said: "Today's proposals make clear the urgent need to radically reform the Common Fisheries Policy."

Big fish have been making pretty regular appearances in anglers’ returns this past week on Loch Leven. The biggest was a fish caught and released by Robert Pelling who was fishing at the time with Tom Ferguson – the two of them estimated it at around 8 lbs! He caught it using a floating line at the Willows off the south east point of St Serfs on a size 10 Gosling – with a few strands of fraggle fritz mixed through.

Henry Lockhart, fishing with Pete Campbell, had a chunky fish at 5 lbs 3 ozs on a size 10 long shank Dunkeld off Cavelstone Strip – Henry travelled down from Fraserburgh and they braved what turned out to be a very windy day. Finally Stewart Marshall, fishing with the Central Scotland Police AC, had a fabulous basket of 4 fish weighing 13 lbs 12 ozs – the biggest weighed 6 lbs 10 ozs was caught on a size 16 Kate McLaren. ...READ MORE

How 76 different 20-pound fishing lines stack up in break- and knot-strength testing

“When are you guys going to do another line test?”

That seems to be one of the questions asked of SF editors most consistently. So I decided recently that I couldn’t put off the task any longer.

Here, you’ll see the results of tests and specific information gathered for each line — some of which are likely to prove a surprise — to help you optimize the dollars you spend buying line, which is often no small investment (see chart showing cost per yard).

Testing Methods

I wanted to offer a comparison of many different lines of the same strength — at least according to their labels. I chose 20-pound lines as an intermediate strength with wide applicability. While there’s no suggestion that these results will necessarily prove applicable for other strengths of the same lines, they should allow some insight into how the brands might compare.

I tested many of the more popular monofilaments and fluorocarbons (some sold as main line, others as leader) and braided lines — 76 in all.

Break tests were conducted using the sophisticated Instron tensile tester at the International Game Fish Association (www.igfa.org) headquarters in Dania Beach, Florida. This is, of course, the same sophisticated, computerized testing machine the IGFA uses to test all lines submitted with world-record applications; it is checked and calibrated regularly.

I tested both line strength and knot strength.

To test the tensile (straight line) strength, I performed five break tests, discarding the highest and lowest results, and averaging the three remaining. I also recorded the standard deviation.

To test knot strength, I used a “real-world” knot, one which I believe is the best way to connect anything to any main line or leader — that is, using a double line formed by a Bimini twist. I tied 12-turn Biminis exactly the same way, finishing each with a simple triple-half-hitch lock.

I performed break tests on three such knots for each line, averaging the three, and again noting standard deviation.

All lines were tested dry, rather than soaking them (regarding the implications of this for monofilaments, see the discussion of results for absolute break strength).

I measured line diameter with a digital caliper (and compared my results with diameters claimed by manufacturers). With hard, round monos and fluoros, this is a no-brainer. Braids are somewhat notorious for being difficult to caliper, because they’re not solid and want to compress when the jaws of a caliper apply pressure to get a reading. Using the least amount of pressure necessary to get a result, I averaged several readings taken from different spots along a length of the line.

Finally, you’ll see the cost per yard listed for each line. These might not represent manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing, since I chose to look for a price (for 300 to 600 or so yards where available) online from one of several large online retailers.

Qualities Not Tested

It’s worth noting those characteristics of fishing lines that were not tested here. This includes abrasion, a quality I would dearly love to test were a truly effective method of testing for abrasion available. Unfortunately, abrasion testing is more involved than testing tensile break strength, and we have yet to find a suitable testing machine for that purpose.

Although the Instron does measure stretch, in this series of tests, I did not include stretch for each line. Typically, monofilaments will stretch 10 percent to 20 percent or more; braids should stretch less than 3 percent.

These results do not measure castability, memory or other characteristics important to anglers. In many cases, actually using a line will prove the only way to truly assess all of its qualities.
