The Navy has run up a tab of Rs 23 crore for a day's extravaganza for the President. Data accessed under RTI from the Western Naval Command headdquarters said Rs 23.24 crore was spent on the event attended by Smt. Pratibha Patil. The information was provided on an application filed by activist S C Agrawal.

The Navy spent Rs 26.96 lakh to acquire new furniture which included 30 dining tables and 60 dining chairs, besides furniture for VIPs and other staff. It spent Rs 17.57 lakh on the presidential banquet for 960 guests and Rs 2.11 lakh on catering on the presidential yacht for 760 invitees. Interestingly, the authorities had budgeted for Rs 12 lakh for water (amounting to 83 one-litre bottles of mineral water for each guest) and Rs 28.14 lakh for "fresh provisions" . Wages and salaries came to Rs 1 crore while some of the longterm infrastructure changes that were made included alterations to cattle fence at Vijaya garden that cost Rs 14 lakh. Repairs to the staircase from the main foyer to the officers' mess also ran up a bill of Rs 14 lakh and a fountain built outside Mulla auditorium cost Rs 6 lakh. The infrastructure costs amounted to Rs 11.67 crore.

The President undertook the fleet review on December 20 last year in which she took salute from a flotilla of 81 ships, four submarines and 44 aircraft of the Navy and theIndian Coast Guard. The President's Fleet Review of the Navy, in which the supreme commander of the armed forces inspects the maritime prowess of the force, took place 20th December, 2011 and is held once in the President's tenure.

Oil marekting companies on Wednesday announced a sharp increase in petrol price, drawing howls of protest from the government's allies and opponents.

The companies said they will raise petrol price by Rs. 6.28 per litre, excluding local sales tax or VAT, effective midnight.

The hike translates into Rs.7.50 per litre in Delhi. Petrol in Mumbai will costRs. 78.57 per litre as against Rs. 70.66 a litre, at present. In Kolkata, the increase will be Rs. 7.85 per litre to Rs. 77.88 per litre and Chennai saw rates going up by Rs. 7.98 toRs. 77.53 per litre.
 
"Given the losses being incurred, the company is compelled to increase the price of petrol by Rs.6.28 per litre (excluding VAT/Sales Tax) with effect from midnight," said the country's largest oil firm Indian Oil Company in a statement. 
 
"This excludes losses already suffered till date during current financial year 2012-13, which would require an additional increase of around Rs.1.50 per litre in selling price of motor spirit (MS) for balance part of the year," Indian Oil said. 
 
This is the sharpest ever hike in petrol prices. The actual increase in prices will vary from state to state depending on the prevailing sales and other taxes. 
 
The BJP strongly protested against the steep hike in the petrol price, saying it was "atrocious" and stressed that there was no justification for the step. "It's atrocious and unbelievable. The UPA government on its third anniversary has given the gift of fuel hike to the people," said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.  
 
"This is no injustice and there is no justification for this," he said. 
 
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is a key ally of the government, said the price hike was "unjust and unilateral". 
 
"We have not been consulted before taking the decision. The rise in the prices of petrol would add to the burden on the people. We shall oppose the move, " she said.
 
The government had decontrolled petrol price in June 2010 but rates were last increased on November 4 last year. A sharp drop in the value of rupee has added to the woes of the oil marketing companies, who have been under financial strain due to persistently high prices of crude oil in global markets.

In what could be the second biggest corporate scandal after Satyam, Reebok India has alleged a Rs 8,700 crore fraud by its former Managing Director Subhinder Singh Prem and former Chief Operating Officer Vishnu Bhagat.

When the alleged scam came to light in March 2012, Singh, who had been made the Managing Director of Adidas India in 2011 as a part of an integration of the businesses of both Adidas and Reebok brands, was dismissed from the company. Bhagat's services were terminated too.

MODUS OPERANDI

Reebok lodged an FIR with the Gurgaon police alleging that Prem and Bhagat had 'stolen' products by setting up 'secret warehouses', fudged accounts and indulged in fictitious sales to cause a multi-crore dent to the company.

The company's financial director, Shahim Padath, later lodged a formal complaint against the duo. The economic cell of Gurgaon police conducted a probe and found that Singh and Bhagat had allegedly rented four warehouses without informing their seniors and used them to store goods and claimed they were supplied to genuine dealers. They also allegedly siphoned off goods to ghost companies and distributors across the country, claiming they were defective pieces.
