The internet is a scary place. But you know you’ve hit the rock-bottomest of the rock bottom when you’re up at midnight perusing cannibal websites.

I know what you’re thinking – Ke$ha’s album Cannibal wasn’t THAT bad. But I’m talking real live cannibalism, a la Jeffrey Dahmer, Albert Fish. You know, humans eating humans.

At the risk of sounding crazy, I came across the web archive of Cannibal Cafe while researching my all-time favorite cannibal news story, that of Armin Meiwes. If you’re not familiar with the story, look it up. Watch this interview from 60 Minutes. It will blow your mind:

Anyway, here’s the reader’s digest version: The year is 2001 and this German dude Armin Meiwes posts as ‘Franky’ in an internet forum called Cannibal Cafe. From the time he was a young boy he has wanted to eat another dude, and he openly shares this on the forum. It’s kind of like facebook for cannibals or eHarmony for sickos.

As you might guess, Meiwes is flooded with responses. After all, who wouldn’t want to be slaughtered and consumed by this happy-go-lucky middle-aged man?

Some potential victims chicken out just before becoming Meiwes’ meal, and Meiwes, being the considerate cannibal that he is, graciously lets them go. Luckily for him, this one Cannibal Cafe member, Berlin engineer Bernd Brandes, wants to be eaten and is totally legit about it.

So, the two begin their correspondence and eventually meet up at a train station. Blah blah blah. Meiwes takes Brandes back to his home, shows him his “slaughter room” (with a meat hook hanging from the ceiling), and then proceeds to cut off parts of his body. When Brandes finally dies, Meiwes butchers the corpse, sautes a piece with garlic, salt and pepper, and enjoys his meal with a glass of fine red wine.

If that isn’t crazy enough, the entire incident is caught on 2 1/2 hours of videotape.

Meiwes consumed 20 kg of the flesh over the next 10 months until he was finally arrested in December 2002. I don’t know how much 20 kg of human flesh is (never really learned the metric system), but it’s 20 kg more than anyone should eat.

The Cannibal Cafe web page was shut down soon after but through some cleverly-named internet genie called ‘Wayback Machine’ the archive is still available. And it is everything you’d expect from a 10 year old website, complete with a brick wall background, cartoon blood splatters, and lots of email addresses ending in aol.com. I won’t give the link since it is incredibly disturbing and inappropriate. The crazy part is that you can actually read posts from Armin Meiwes, who posted as “Franky” in both German and English. He wrote the following message on November 24, 2002 – just before his arrest. Apparently he was still looking for victims, and a quick plug into google translate gave me this:

Are you up to max. 30 years old, have a normal body, then you’re right for me. I will kill you and eat your delicious flesh with relish. (ketchup and mustard too? ).

Heday’s Pizza Mochi

A Japanese take on an Italian classic!

You will need:

Mochi (PLAIN)
Ketchup
Shredded mozzarella cheese

1. Preheat oven to your favorite temperature.
2. Put ketchup on mochi and then shredded mozzarella cheese on top of it.
3. Put mochi on aluminum foil and cook it for 6 mins or so till the mochi gets soft and stretchy.
4. Eat.

Valerie’s Spicy Garlic Surprise

You will need:

16 oz. angel hair pasta or spaghetti
5-6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
10-14 (!!!) cloves of garlic
cayenne pepper
black pepper
crushed red pepper
salt
fresh basil (for garnish)

Finely chop your garlic cloves. Only put them through a garlic press if you are really lazy. Bring large pot of HEAVILY SALTED water to a boil. Water should taste salty. Add pasta and cook until al dente. Don’t overcook your pasta or Valerie and Heday will eat you alive. Drain.

In the meantime, heat olive oil over low heat in a large saucepan. Add garlic and cook until soft. Sprinkle a generous amount of cayenne pepper, black pepper, and crushed pepper flakes over the garlic and oil.

Add pasta and toss, adding additional salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with julienne-cut basil leaves.

Eat.

Last week’s 24-hour songwriting session was even more difficult than I expected. 24 hours is a long time to spend writing, especially when it’s broadcast live for the whole world to see. In all, 38,000 people tuned in to watch Heday and I crank out hits.

The idea for this came about when Heday showed me a video of a Japanese man undertaking the “hundred man kumite,” which is supposedly the ultimate test of physical and mental perseverance in Martial Arts. Apparently after fighting his hundredth opponent, he found something in himself that he never knew existed. Of course, he was immediately rushed to the hospital too, having suffered bodily damage that would affect him permanently. I think his taste buds were completely destroyed.

“Isn’t that beautiful?” Heday asked me. Hmmm.

Ok, I get it. There is something beautiful about pushing one’s limit to the absolute extreme. But I can tell you, after 24 hours in a tiny room writing songs, I did NOT feel beautiful.

I did have a fun time preparing for the session since it felt like I was packing for something completely unknown. Yes, it was only 24 hours, but I still needed changes of clothes (I wore three outfits in total), my toothbrush, ample snacking material, and of course caffeine. I normally attempt to limit my caffeine intake, but this time it was triple espresso all the way! Lots of junk food too and totally justified in this situation, right? : )

A quick run to Ringside Liquor across the street scored us seven of these:

Every three hours, we would scratch one off and hope for the big bucks. A little something to look forward to.

The writing session started off rather methodically and was actually quite productive. We would start with lyrical and musical concepts and proceed to make music. Viewers from all over the world were tuning in from their computers, and it was fascinating to interact with them as they watched our process.

This lasted maybe 6 hours.

Things started to go downhill. At the 12 hour mark, which seemed like an important milestone, I cringed at the thought of spending 12 more hours in that room. Everything I played on my keyboard started to sound ugly, and I was tired. It’s always hard to force creativity, but this time it felt like a chore.

Surprisingly, I only felt like going to sleep a few times throughout the 24 hours. But I did have that feeling you get when you don’t sleep at all, and your body shakes and you don’t know whether you’re hot or cold.

I guess I was kind of looking forward to the crazy ideas that might come out of us when we were tired and a little loopy. But my brain was fried. We both knew this would be difficult, but really didn’t expect the sounds of our instruments to be so cringe-worthy. Heday wondered if music would ever sound good again.

The last hour was the hardest, as I became an emotional wreck and didn’t have the mental strength to keep from breaking down. And, with thousands of people watching us on Ustream, I felt like a reality TV drama queen. Yikes.

And to top it all off, we won NOTHING from our seven Cool 7′s lotto tickets! Odds of winning? 1:4. We must have gotten a bad batch.

BUT…we made it!

I think my brain will thank me for this someday. I gave it a good work-out. I don’t know if I would do this again, but it seems like we’ve inspired others to push their limits and see what happens. 無事（？）２４時間作曲を終えました。みなさんご覧いただけたでしょうか？音楽的チャレンジはもちろん、二人の人間が付き合うということに対してのチャレンジもありました。

まず僕なりの感想を書こうと思います。

始まる前まではかなり不安でした。なにしろ眠気に弱い僕ですので体力的に持つかどうか、それが不安でした。寝てはいけないと考えるだけで結構不安になるのでできるだけ考えないようにしました。

いざ始まって、精神的に一番きつかったのは最初の数時間でした。その瞬間に対する恐怖よりも、この先眠ってはいけないという未来への恐怖の方が大きいようです。体的には２２時間目とかの方がきついわけですが、精神的には２時間目あたりの「まだ２２時間もある！！」という方がこたえるわけです。

始まる前は「２４時間作曲」には「肉体的」「精神的」の２つチャレンジがあると思っていました。しかし、第３のチャレンジ「創造」のチャレンジが出現し、これに一番苦しめられました。

最初の８～９時間くらいはそれでもいつも通り曲が書けました。１曲に４時間くらいはまぁいつも通りかなぁと言う感じです。しかし、１０時間目くらいからでしょうか、全くいいアイデアが浮かばなくなってきました。そしてそれはヴァレリーにも起こりました。これはきっといいアイデアが浮かばなくなってきたのではなく、脳がいいメロディを認知できなくなったからだと思います。１０時間考え続け、そして音を聴いていたら、もはや音楽が「音の連続」にしか聴こえなくなってきたのです。自分が今まで好きだった曲を思い浮かべ、頭の中で流してももはやいい音楽ではありませんでした。

音楽のほとんどはdiminishedやaugumentedなどのコードがあるにしても、ほぼ基本はメジャーコードかマイナーコードでできているから２種類しかないし、メロディーの単音だって上がるか、下がるか、そのままか３方向しか行き場がないし、リズムに関しては次の音がいつなるかの時間差だけだし。。。そう考えると僕らはものすごい制約の中で作業をしてきたんだと思いました。

とにかくこの状況は２４時間終わるまで続きました。２４時間終わって「このまま曲が書けなくなってしまったらどうしよう」という不安が残りました。ここが１００人組手とは少し違うところかと思います。あくまで私見ですが、１００人組手は肉体と精神の限界に挑戦ですので、肉体的、精神的に２４時間作曲より厳しいがゆえ終わった後に何かを見出せるのでしょう。２４時間作曲は計らずとも「創造」への挑戦となり、これは終わりがないだけに僕に課題を残して行きました。「２４時間大喜利」は「創造力」という点で同じであり、それを考えると松本人志さんはやっぱりすごいなぁと再確認させられます。少し脳と耳を休めて、次にちゃんとまだ曲が出てくるか様子を見てみることにします。

あと、ああいった気張った状況ということもあり、いつもの作曲法が全く使えませんでした。以前にも紹介した眠る瀬戸際で音楽を生み出す方法ですが、眠ってはいけない、カメラがまわっている、ヴァレリーが横で作曲してる、など色んな条件が重なり、いつもの眠りの瀬戸際に行くことが出来ませんでした。何度か試しましたが、瀬戸際を通らずすぐに眠りに落ちそうでした。

ヴァレリーは今回の２４時間作曲どう捉えたんでしょうね。いずれにしても、一緒にやれて僕はよかったし、本当に感謝しています。僕は結構精神的にもろいので、ヴァレリーと一緒だからできると言うことがいっぱいあります。ヴァレリーに頼ってるわけではないけど、本当に彼女がいることで一人ではできないことがいっぱい出来ています。今回最後の２４時間目で言い合いになりましたが、あぁいったレイラ・レーンの一面もあるのが現実です。二人の人間が一緒になにかをするというのには避けられないことかと思っています。問題はそれをどう対処するかであるのかなぁ、と。

今回はお蔭様で２４時間を通して約３万７千人が見てくださいました。百人組手のように、見るものに感動を与えられたかはわかりません。自分が限界を超えたとも残念ながら思えません。ただ、今まで見つけられなかった課題を見つけられました。これをクリアすればもっといい音楽家になれると思いますので、収穫ありです。

いよいよ明日に迫ってきたわけではありますが、結構、、いやかなり緊張しています。やるぞーって言うのは簡単でしたが、戦いはもう始まっていると言いますか、いざ目前となるとかなり怖いものです。まぁこれも実際やったことのある人間にしかわからないものを体験しているのだと納得するようにしています。

ヴァレリーもやっぱり気が張っているのでしょう、昨日弱音を吐いていました。それで僕は怒ってしまいました。きっと自分も不安を必死で隠そうとしていたところだったのを煽られたからだと思います。自分もまだまだ弱いものです。最近は本当に怒らなくなっていたのですが、やっぱり自分も結構追い詰められているのでしょう、怒ってしまいました。こういった節々にまだまだ自分の弱さが顕著に表れてしまいます。こういった節々でなくても、弱さは表れているのですが。。。

このプロジェクトを通して自分だけの成長のみではなく、二人でやることによりレイラ・レーンとして何を見出せるかも楽しみです。

先日お話した百人組手と同じく、このプロジェクトに多大なる影響を与えたものが尊敬する松本人志氏による「２４時間大喜利」です。

松本さんの「２４時間大喜利」をはじめて見たのは大学生の時でしたが、感銘を受けたのを今でも覚えております。そのような経緯もあり、今回音楽家の自分達は２４時間作曲を続けてみたいと思ったのであります。時間との戦い、自らのクリエイティヴィティとの戦い、そういった意味で松本さんはすでに圧倒的な結果を残されているので、プレッシャーは大きいです。でもやはり最終的には自分との戦いですので、あまり意識はしていないつもりではあります。

今はまだ言わば先人達が築いてくれた道を辿っている段階ですが、２４時間作曲にて自分の限界を超えたら、次はもっともっとレイラ・レーンらしい何かが見つかるような気がしております。

さて、今日は僕の作曲についてお話しましょう。

２４時間作曲となったら相当な数の曲ができると期待してる方は多いかと思います。正直申しまして、２４時間で何曲書けるかは全く検討がつきません。１０曲できるかもしれないし、１曲もできないかもしれない。まぁ釣りみたいなもんです。だからこそ、曲が生まれる瞬間を逃さぬようＵｓｔｒｅａｍでの中継に釘付けになってください（笑）。

普段はいきなり曲を書くということはあまりしません。アイデアが浮かんだらテープレコーダーに吹き込みほったらかします。そして溜まったアイデアたちをある程度時間がたってから聞きなおし、それでもよかったものを仕上げていきます。この時のアイデアは本当に１ラインなので、ここから仕上げる作業も結構時間がかかったりします。

アイデアは考えて練りだすこともありますが、大抵は寝る直前に出ます。「果報は寝て待て」ではないですが、眠りに落ちる瞬間、「眠り」と「覚醒」の波打ち際にすごく自由になれる瞬間があるのです。例えばサザンっぽい曲が書きたいとします。そしたらまず自分が桑田さんになったことをイメージして寝ようとします。するとあら不思議、眠りに落ちる直前に桑田さんになれる刹那が訪れ、そこでアイデアが出てくるのです。そこで眠りの誘惑に打ち勝って枕元にあるテープレコーダーに録音してから　ｚｚｚｚｚｚｚｚ　寝ます。

これは作曲だけに限らずクリエイティヴなこと何にでも応用しています。Ｈａｐｐｙ　Ｌａｎｅのアレンジ／構成を考えるときもヴァレリーと二人で頭を寄せても出てこなかったので、「ちょっと寝てくる」と言って完成させました。

ただ、まわりから見たら「おい！ゴルァ！寝てんじゃねー！ボケー」と思うでしょうね笑

さて、まずはなぜこんなことをやろうと思ったかから話しましょう。

僕は極真空手の創始者マス大山の生き様に多大なる影響とインスピレーションを受けています。まずは強くなるために自分を追い込み、そして空手を世界に広めるために並々ならぬ努力をしてきた人物です。その生き様からにじみ出る哲学といいますか、精神世界は僕の音楽活動の原動力となってきました。

そんな彼が創めた極真空手の一番の荒修行とされているものに「１００人組手」があります。１００人組手とは一人の空手家が連続で１００人の空手家と組手を行うことで、まだ１０人しか達成者が出ておりません。１００人組手を達成した八巻さんという空手家は次のように言っております：

「八十人を過ぎたとき　限界をみた。ただ恐怖との戦いだった。

九十人を過ぎたとき　薄れゆく意識の中　自分を奮い立たせ　やるだけだと決めた。

百人を終わったとき　限界を超えた　あらたな自分がいた。」

人間は自分の限界をプッシュしてこそ新たな境地に辿れつけるような気がします。そしてその境地たるものは自分で体験しない限り理解しえないものだと思います。歴史を振り返ってみても、よい芸術が生まれているのは苦しい時代です。苦行に意味があるかはわかりませんが、少なくとも僕は自分自身に挑戦することには大いなる意味があると信じています。

そのような経緯で今回２４時間作曲をやることにしました。賛成して一緒にやってくれるヴァレリーに感謝！
