Layla Lane did a Coca-Cola TV commercial in Japan again!! Please have a watch!

People like to ask musicians what music they like. The truth is, I don’t do the Pandora thing or the Spotify thing, and I’ve never owned an iPod. I listen to CDs and CDs only. I drive a lot and that’s what gets me through. Below are some of my favorites in a list I will call “Valerie’s top 15 pop albums of all-time.” I can’t claim that these are the GREATEST albums of all-time (haven’t heard most), but these are the ones that have figured most prominently in my collection, my car, and my heart.

Valerie’s Top 15 Pop Albums of All-Time (in no particular order)

David Byrne – Feelings

I usually lean toward the ‘weirdo’ side of the “genius or weirdo?” debate, but in the case of David Byrne, I’ve gotta give it to him. Before writing a disco musical and transforming an entire building into a musical instrument (but post-Talking Heads), David Byrne put together quite possibly the coolest 13 songs ever. Some favorites: “Miss America,” “Dance on Vaseline,” “Burnt By the Sun,” and “They Are In Love.” I say this list is in no particular order, but this CD is definitely a contender for #1.

Michael Jackson – Off The Wall

This one reminds me of high school. MJ is ridiculous.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss – Raising Sand
2009 Grammy album of the year. ‘Nuff said.

Jill Sobule – Jill Sobule

I knew her semi-hits of the 90′s but didn’t realize how great she was until I randomly picked up this album in like 2005.
Fun fact #1: My mom and I appeared in one of Jill’s videos filmed in a run-down furniture outlet in North Hollywood.
Fun fact #2: I went to her last concert alone.

The Monkees – More Greatest Hits of the Monkees

When I was in fifth grade I ran for class president and Mom and Dad suggested that I use the Monkees’ “Valleri” for my grand entrance. I then delivered my speech wearing a Bill Clinton mask. While I didn’t win the election (too many 10-year-old Republicans?), I did score an awesome album that became my go-to soundtrack for cleaning my room until college. Some favorite tracks: “Take a Giant Step,” “Randy Scouse Git,” and of course, “Valleri.” RIP Davy Jones!

The Clash – The Clash

Punk rock at its finest! Another good one for cleaning my room. It makes me get A LOT done.

Norah Jones – The Fall

Nice doggy! There’s something Robert-Plant-Alison-Kraussy about this one. It’s more folky, more rocky and less jazzy and that’s why me likey.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack

An all-around good time.

Berlin – Best of Berlin 1979-1988

I probably listened to Pleasure Victim more, but it disappeared and this was a super solid collection to fall back on. Besides, “No More Words” has one of the most badass music videos ever.

Tori Amos – Boys For Pele

I had no clue I was a Tori Amos fan until I picked up this CD on a whim from a thrift store. It blew me away. It’s dark, weird, beautiful, and loaded with harpsichord.

Queen – A Day At The Races

Four words: Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy (five words?).

The Beach Boys – Classics Selected by Brian Wilson

Some quirky gems on this collection. I find this CD an excellent companion for nighttime driving, as it tricks me into believing I have entered Brian Wilson’s brain! Neat!

Road Trip #1, December 2009

OK so maybe this one’s cheating. But this album has stood the test of time in my car for over 2 years, quite a feat for a mix CD, I must say. Created by the hippest guy with a last name for a first name EVER to come out of Downey, CA, this is a first-rate collection of old-school country, cowboy songs, and more fun. Some highlights: “Take This Job and Shove It,” “Delta Dawn,” “Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley,” and four, yes FOUR, songs about New Mexico.

No Doubt – The Beacon Street Collection

An overlooked precursor to Tragic Kingdom. In my opinion.

Madness – Madness

Adorable. Just TRY listening to this CD without smiling.

So there you have it. Maybe next time I’ll give y’all a glimpse at another list of favorites. Maybe dog breeds or classical composers.

昨日は僕が志望校に受かっていたのに直前で入学取り消しになってしまったところまで話しましたね。

すごく凹んだなぁ。アメリカの大学だったから、学校に行けなくなるってことはビザの問題とかもあって日本に帰らなければならなくなってしまう可能性も十分にあったんです。向こうのミスでここまで一人の人生が狂わされてもいいものか！！？？悲しみ、怒り、いろんなネガティヴな感情に支配されていました。

あまり回りくどいことは言いたくないのでストレートに言いますが、今思えば

あの時入学取り消しになってよかったーー！！！ってか入学取り消しになってなかったらやばかった！！！

あの時大学に行っていたらコカ・コーラのCMをやらせていただくことも、エイベックスからデビューすることも、下手したらレイラ・レーンすら組んでなかったでしょう。あの時誰かさんがミスして僕を落としてくれたから今があるんです。人生ってわからないもんでしょ？

つまり本気で頑張ったって自分で胸を張って言えるんなら、今回受験失敗したのはいいことなんだよ！そこの学校行かないほうが将来的にもっといいことあるよっていう神さまからのサイン、間違いねぇっす。

だってね、昨日も言ったけど、志望校に行くことがゴールじゃないんだから。志望校に受かるのがゴールで、それだけでもう残りの人生幸せって言うんなら一緒に悲しんであげる。でもちがうじゃん？自分が描く未来へ近づく方法ってのは行く学校だけじゃない。ぜーーーーーんぶ自分次第！！そして自分の描く未来にたどり着く方法なんて何百通りもある！

兎にも角にも大切なのは本気を出すこと！何事もそうだけど、自分が生半可な気持ちで臨んで失敗したらそれはあたりまえ。でも、本気なのに失敗したらそれはいいことなんだよ！今はわからないかもしれないけど、将来そう思うときが絶対くるはず。第一、今大人になってこんな職業だからいろんな業界の成功してる人に会うけど「実は私、受験に失敗しまして、それを今でも後悔してるんです」なんて人に会ったことないし。

目に見えない誰かが頑張ってるみんなのことを思ってわざわざ受験失敗させてくれたんだよ！！だから、「なるほど！」と思って、じゃ、次何をしたらいいかを見つけよう！そしてやるべきことが見つかったらまたそれに必死になればいい。

今日はまだ未発表のこの曲を贈りたい。POM（ポム）という曲だけど、この曲はまさに自分の受験失敗の体験をもとに書かれた曲なんだ。POMが何者かはみんなが感じ取ってね。ビデオは幼稚園からずっと一緒の仲間たちが作ってくれた。どうぞ！

３月に入って志望校の合格発表があると思う。受験という性質ゆえ、いやがおうにもここで「合格した生徒」と「不合格だった生徒」にふるいわけされてしまう。合格した生徒には「おめでとう」と伝えたい。

でも不合格だった生徒にはもっともっと伝えたいことがある！

受験失敗しちゃったみんなへ。

なんとなくまわりの人が気を使ってるのもわかってしまって、それも逆に嫌なんじゃないでしょうか。おせっかいかもしれないけど、みんなが凹んでるときだからこそ僕はより話したい。僕の話で気が楽になるかはわからないけど、絶対将来笑える日がくるから大丈夫。だって、かくいう自分も受験失敗経験者だから。（正確には受験失敗とも少しちがうんですけど、考えようによっては受験失敗よりひどい話です。）

僕はアメリカに来て大学でクラシックギターを勉強しました。すごく夢中だったから、大学院まで行きたかった。大学院はここロサンジェルスでも音楽でＮＯ．１の南カリフォルニア大学に行きたくて、毎日学校以外に８時間練習しました。そして望んだオーディション。

無事合格！しかも奨学金として学校が少しお金をくれるという条件で！

「なんだなんだ、全然ひどい思いなんてしてないじゃん、なめてんの？」って思ってる君。ここからが悲劇のはじまりです。

もう進学先も決まったし、のんびり暮らしているある日、日本の実家から電話が。

「英語のテストの結果が提出されてないので〇月〇日までに提出しないとあなたの入学は取り消します。」　

という内容の手紙が届いているんだってさ。僕は２００％英語のテスト結果を提出してるのに！！学校がなくしたんだよ！！しかも、日本まで郵送されてる間にその締め切りは過ぎちゃってた。ということで、奨学金まで出てたのに

入学取り消し！！　　ゴルァ！！

このために必死こいて練習したのに！超マジメに生きてきたのになぜだーーーー！！？？

同じように思ってる子いるんじゃないかな？大丈夫、大丈夫。

明日続きを書くけど、僕は今が楽しい！！とりあえず今日は、学生時代受験失敗した人でも、大人になって本当に幸せになってる人はいくらでもいることを覚えておいてね！みんなの人生のゴールは志望校合格じゃないんだよ。志望校に受かっても楽しくなかったら意味ないでしょ？自分の人生楽しくするかしないかは受験の合否では決められないんだ、だってそれを決めるのは自分なんだから！！

The internet is a scary place. But you know you’ve hit the rock-bottomest of the rock bottom when you’re up at midnight perusing cannibal websites.

I know what you’re thinking – Ke$ha’s album Cannibal wasn’t THAT bad. But I’m talking real live cannibalism, a la Jeffrey Dahmer, Albert Fish. You know, humans eating humans.

At the risk of sounding crazy, I came across the web archive of Cannibal Cafe while researching my all-time favorite cannibal news story, that of Armin Meiwes. If you’re not familiar with the story, look it up. Watch this interview from 60 Minutes. It will blow your mind:

Anyway, here’s the reader’s digest version: The year is 2001 and this German dude Armin Meiwes posts as ‘Franky’ in an internet forum called Cannibal Cafe. From the time he was a young boy he has wanted to eat another dude, and he openly shares this on the forum. It’s kind of like facebook for cannibals or eHarmony for sickos.

As you might guess, Meiwes is flooded with responses. After all, who wouldn’t want to be slaughtered and consumed by this happy-go-lucky middle-aged man?

Some potential victims chicken out just before becoming Meiwes’ meal, and Meiwes, being the considerate cannibal that he is, graciously lets them go. Luckily for him, this one Cannibal Cafe member, Berlin engineer Bernd Brandes, wants to be eaten and is totally legit about it.

So, the two begin their correspondence and eventually meet up at a train station. Blah blah blah. Meiwes takes Brandes back to his home, shows him his “slaughter room” (with a meat hook hanging from the ceiling), and then proceeds to cut off parts of his body. When Brandes finally dies, Meiwes butchers the corpse, sautes a piece with garlic, salt and pepper, and enjoys his meal with a glass of fine red wine.

If that isn’t crazy enough, the entire incident is caught on 2 1/2 hours of videotape.

Meiwes consumed 20 kg of the flesh over the next 10 months until he was finally arrested in December 2002. I don’t know how much 20 kg of human flesh is (never really learned the metric system), but it’s 20 kg more than anyone should eat.

The Cannibal Cafe web page was shut down soon after but through some cleverly-named internet genie called ‘Wayback Machine’ the archive is still available. And it is everything you’d expect from a 10 year old website, complete with a brick wall background, cartoon blood splatters, and lots of email addresses ending in aol.com. I won’t give the link since it is incredibly disturbing and inappropriate. The crazy part is that you can actually read posts from Armin Meiwes, who posted as “Franky” in both German and English. He wrote the following message on November 24, 2002 – just before his arrest. Apparently he was still looking for victims, and a quick plug into google translate gave me this:

Are you up to max. 30 years old, have a normal body, then you’re right for me. I will kill you and eat your delicious flesh with relish. (ketchup and mustard too? ).

Heday’s Pizza Mochi

A Japanese take on an Italian classic!

You will need:

Mochi (PLAIN)
Ketchup
Shredded mozzarella cheese

1. Preheat oven to your favorite temperature.
2. Put ketchup on mochi and then shredded mozzarella cheese on top of it.
3. Put mochi on aluminum foil and cook it for 6 mins or so till the mochi gets soft and stretchy.
4. Eat.

Valerie’s Spicy Garlic Surprise

You will need:

16 oz. angel hair pasta or spaghetti
5-6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
10-14 (!!!) cloves of garlic
cayenne pepper
black pepper
crushed red pepper
salt
fresh basil (for garnish)

Finely chop your garlic cloves. Only put them through a garlic press if you are really lazy. Bring large pot of HEAVILY SALTED water to a boil. Water should taste salty. Add pasta and cook until al dente. Don’t overcook your pasta or Valerie and Heday will eat you alive. Drain.

In the meantime, heat olive oil over low heat in a large saucepan. Add garlic and cook until soft. Sprinkle a generous amount of cayenne pepper, black pepper, and crushed pepper flakes over the garlic and oil.

Add pasta and toss, adding additional salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with julienne-cut basil leaves.

Eat.
