Christian filmmaking is not merely a profession. It’s a divine calling—a spiritual dance of light and shadow choreographed to illuminate truth, love, and redemption. Yet many faith-driven filmmakers find themselves facing a familiar Goliath: budget constraints.

But here's the good news: David still has his sling, and in today’s digital world, that sling comes in the form of free, powerful apps that are faithful to your craft and your wallet. Whether you’re capturing baptismal beauty, cinematic testimonies, or the raw revival of a soul returning home, these tools will help you preach, teach, and reach—all without a dollar spent.

Let’s equip you, Kingdom creative, with the best FREE apps to elevate your filmmaking—spirit-led and studio-worthy.

🎥 1. DaVinci Resolve (Editing)

Platform: Windows, macOS, Linux
Faith Factor: Professional power for the budget-blessed

Why it matters: DaVinci Resolve is a post-production behemoth used by Hollywood—but offered in a completely free version for indie creators. Color grading? Broadcast quality audio? Multicam editing? Yes, all of it.

Spiritual Application: Just as Christ refines us like gold, this app refines raw footage into redemptive storytelling.
Pro Tip: Use their Fairlight audio suite to mix music, sermons, and testimonies with studio-grade clarity.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” – Colossians 3:23

🎬 2. Shot Lister Free (Pre-Production/Shot Planning)

Platform: iOS, Android
Faith Factor: Order your vision before the chaos of production hits

Why it matters: God is not the author of confusion, and neither should your shoot be. Shot Lister lets you plan every shot, schedule your day, and adjust in real time.

Emotional Benefit: Reduces stress, improves communication with your crew, and reminds you—you were called to lead with vision.

Bonus Tip: The premium version offers syncing with team members, but the free version still gives full planning power.

📱 3. Open Camera (Mobile Filmmaking)

Platform: Android
Faith Factor: Turning humble tools into divine works

Why it matters: If you're shooting with a smartphone—like many ministry teams and church creatives—Open Camera gives manual control over ISO, white balance, shutter speed, and even external mic support. You now have a full-fledged cinematography tool in your pocket.

Inspiration: Jesus turned water into wine. You’re about to turn a phone into a film ministry.

“Despise not the day of small beginnings.” – Zechariah 4:10

🎼 4. Audacity (Audio Editing)

Platform: Windows, macOS, Linux
Faith Factor: Faith comes by hearing—make sure it sounds divine.

Why it matters: Dialogue and audio are often more important than video. Audacity lets you clean audio, apply effects, remove background noise, and even record your pastor’s narration or your actor’s voiceovers.

Life-Changing Statistic: According to Nielsen, 75% of a viewer’s experience in film is driven by sound—not visuals.

Emotional Lift: Hear the heartbeat of your film clearly—and your audience will too.

🔤 5. Canva (Graphics, Social Media, Titles)

Platform: Web, iOS, Android
Faith Factor: Make your message visible in a visually saturated world.

Why it matters: Canva is perfect for designing movie posters, thumbnails, sermon series graphics, or YouTube channel branding. And yes—it’s free.

Encouragement: The gospel is powerful, but in this noisy world, good design helps you catch eyes so you can reach hearts.

“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.” – Habakkuk 2:2

🎞️ 6. Storyboarder (Storyboarding)

Platform: Windows, macOS
Faith Factor: Jesus told parables—visual storytelling was His method.

Why it matters: This open-source software by Wonder Unit makes visualizing your scenes easy—even if you can’t draw. It syncs with Photoshop and allows you to animate panels.

Motivational Truth: Every frame you draw is one step closer to transforming lives through your story.

🌎 7. Frame.io (Collaboration and Feedback)

Platform: Web, iOS
Faith Factor: Build community and co-labor in Christ

Why it matters: The free version of Frame.io lets small teams collaborate on edits, share feedback frame-by-frame, and build unity in vision. Perfect for church teams, volunteers, or distant collaborators.

Team Unity Boost: “Iron sharpens iron”—and that includes your editing partner giving that tough but loving critique.

🌟 Bonus: Pexels / Pixabay / Artlist (Free Christian Stock Footage and Music)

Why it matters: Not every filmmaker has a drone or a full orchestra. These platforms offer free visuals and sounds that elevate your production value while staying aligned with Christian values.

Emotional Reminder: You’re not failing because you’re using stock; you’re being resourceful and wise with your ministry’s stewardship.

🎤 Final Word from the Heart

Dear filmmaker of faith:
Your camera is a cross. Your lens is a window into eternity. And your story—yes, your story—has the power to awaken the broken, soften the hardened, and glorify God in this visual age.

Never let budget discourage your mission. As the apostle Paul wrote from prison, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content… I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:11–13).

You don’t need a blockbuster budget. You need a burden for truth.

So go forth, director of destiny. Film the revival. Edit the encounter. And let your free tools serve a boundless God.

Most of us don’t have $50,000 sitting around for lights, cameras, and action.
But here’s the truth Hollywood doesn’t want you to hear: you already have what you need to start.

It’s in your pocket.
It's your smartphone.
(Yes, the same phone you accidentally dropped in the sink last month.)

📱 Why Your Smartphone Is the Perfect Starting Tool

Today’s smartphones are packed with crazy-good cameras.
(If Jesus could feed 5,000 people with a few loaves and fish, you can film a powerful short with your iPhone.)

Here’s why your phone is a blessing for beginner filmmakers:

Low Cost: You already own it.

Portability: Film anytime, anywhere — no bulky equipment required.

High Quality: Even mid-range phones can shoot in 4K today.

Don’t wait for “someday equipment.” Start with what you have.
Remember: It's about the message, not the megapixels.

🎯 How to Make Your Smartphone Film Look Cinematic

1. Stabilize Your Shots

Use a cheap tripod, a mini smartphone gimbal, or — if you’re desperate — stack some books.

Shaky footage screams amateur. Smooth = pro.

2. Light Like a Boss

Natural light is your friend.

Film near windows or shoot outside during “golden hour” (an hour after sunrise or before sunset).

Pro tip: Lamps can double as soft lighting!

Bad sound kills good video.

Record in quiet locations.

If you can, grab a cheap external mic (under $30 online).

Or at least get close to your subject and minimize background noise.

4. Film Horizontally
Unless you’re making TikToks for Jesus, film sideways.
Horizontal videos = professional.
Vertical videos = your aunt’s Facebook posts.

See?
You’re more prepared than you thought.

🛠️ Start Simple: Christian Short Film Ideas

Parables Modernized: Retell a Biblical parable in a modern setting.

Testimony Films: Share a story of transformation through faith.

Scripture Reflections: A poetic reading of a verse with visuals.

Short. Focused. Meaningful.
You don’t need explosions and car chases — you need a story that points people to hope.

📖 Bible Verse for Christian Filmmakers

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin." — Zechariah 4:10

✨ Final Thought: Start Now, Grow Later

Perfection is the enemy of progress.
God isn’t looking for flawless films — He's looking for faithful hearts willing to create.
So charge that battery, wipe off your lens (seriously, clean it!), and start filming.

The world needs your voice.
And it doesn’t care if you filmed it on a phone.

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

You’re not imagining things. But here's the good news: if you're a Christian filmmaker (or dreaming of becoming one), you're perfectly positioned to change that.

In fact, you’re called to it.

✨ Why Storytelling Matters in a Faith-Driven World

Stories shape cultures.
Jesus knew this — that's why He taught using parables.
He didn’t hand out theological essays at the Sermon on the Mount. He told stories about mustard seeds, lost sons, and hidden treasures.

Stories touch the heart before they reach the mind.

Christian filmmakers today have the same opportunity:

To tell stories of redemption.

To show hope where there’s despair.

To remind people of light in a world obsessed with darkness.

And you don't need a $5 million budget to do it. (Phew.)

🎥 The Unique Power of Christian Filmmakers

We tell different stories. Not stories free from struggle — but stories where grace wins.

We aim for more than box office numbers. We’re planting seeds of truth, hope, and transformation.

We have a different audience. Sure, millions would be nice. But if your story reaches one heart that needs it, heaven celebrates.

Don’t underestimate the impact of a single faithful film.
(After all, David didn't need a fancy sword to bring down Goliath — just a good aim and a rock.)

🎯 A Few Reminders Before You Hit “Record”

Excellence matters. Faith doesn’t excuse laziness. Craft your stories well.

Authenticity matters. Audiences can spot “cheesy” a mile away. Show real struggles. Share real hope.

Patience matters. Fruit grows slowly — and so will your skills and your audience. That’s okay.

You’re not just making films. You’re carrying light into a very real battlefield. And the world desperately needs that light.

📖 Bible Verse for Christian Filmmakers

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — Colossians 3:23

✨ Final Thought: Tell the Stories Only You Can Tell

Your experiences, your faith, your imagination — they all matter.
Pick up your camera (even if it’s just your phone), pray up, and get to work.
The world needs the stories only you can tell.

And hey — the budget might be low, but the calling?
Priceless.

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

(Confession: I Googled it last week.) It’s easy to think of science as something dry and dusty — all lab coats and serious faces. But here’s the secret: science isn’t the enemy of faith. It’s the wink of God.

Every molecule, every star, every heartbeat is a divine signature. Psalm 19:1 says it best: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” That’s not poetry alone — it’s scientific fact wrapped in a love letter.

Take DNA, for example. Scientists call it the blueprint of life. I like to call it God’s love note, folded into every cell. It’s a marvel of engineering so intricate that even Richard Dawkins once called it "an ancient, digital, and almost magical code." (If Dawkins can spot the magic, we should definitely take notice.)

Here's the clincher: faith isn’t about blindly believing when we could clearly be seeing. God doesn’t ask us to switch off our brains. He invites us to worship with them fully engaged. Proverbs 25:2 says, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.” You were designed to wonder, to dig, to discover — and to find Him waiting at every endpoint.

Faith and science are dance partners, not rivals. They twirl around the questions that matter most: Where did we come from? Why are we here? What does love mean? When science whispers truth, faith hears the music.

And when you’re elbow-deep in another unexpected “but why” from your kid, take a breath. Smile. Remember: every question is a doorway, and God — the greatest scientist, the original storyteller — is waiting just on the other side.

✨ Bonus Tip for Readers: Next time you're out under the stars, teach your kids that the Big Dipper isn't just a neat shape — it's a reminder that God designed an entire universe and still notices when a sparrow falls. That's the kind of hug your soul needs.

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

🎨 Tips for Your Verse Cards:

Print on bright, cheerful paper.

Add a small sticker or cute border.

Keep the message short and joyful — focus on light, love, and courage.

Optional: Include a mini invitation to your church’s next family event.

A small verse tucked with a sweet treat can shine brighter than any costume on Halloween night!

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

📖 Theme: Light in the Darkness

Bible Verse:
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden." — Matthew 5:14

🗣️ Devotional Thought:

Tonight, the world might celebrate darkness, but we are called to celebrate light.
When we smile, share kindness, and hand out candy with a blessing, we are showing others a glimpse of God's heart.
Just like a flashlight brightens a dark room, even the smallest act of love shines brightly in a world that needs hope.

Ask your kids:

How can we shine God's light tonight?

What are some ways we can make someone’s night better?

🙏 Prayer:

"Dear God, thank You for being the true Light in our lives. Help us to share Your love tonight through kindness, smiles, and blessings. Let everything we do shine for You. Amen."

✨ Small Activity:
Before leaving the house, have each family member pick one act of kindness to do during Halloween night!

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

Here are thoughtful ways to make an eternal impact:

🏡 Shine at Your Door

Hand out candy along with Scripture cards or encouraging notes.

Decorate with lights, pumpkins, and positive, welcoming signs like “You Are Loved!”

Greet every trick-or-treater with genuine joy and a warm blessing.

🚪 Trunk or Treat Events

Help organize or volunteer at a church “Trunk or Treat.”

Decorate your car trunk with a Bible story theme — like Noah’s Ark or Jonah and the whale.

🎉 Host a Neighborhood Gathering

Invite neighbors over for a fall-themed party with games, music, and treats.

Offer prayer cards or blessing jars where people can take a Scripture with them.

🕊️ Acts of Service

Deliver treats to local fire stations, hospitals, or shelters with notes of encouragement.

Walk your neighborhood with your family, praying quietly over each home.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us, "Let us not grow weary of doing good." Halloween is a perfect night to plant seeds of love and kindness.

© Layne McDonald. Including short Bible verses offers encouragement, hope, and truth in a night often focused on fear.

Here are some perfect verses to tuck into candy bags:

🎃 Hope-Filled Verses

John 8:12 — "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Psalm 56:3 — "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you."

2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

🌟 Encouragement Verses

Jeremiah 29:11 — "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you."

Romans 12:21 — "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

❤️ Verses About God’s Love

1 John 4:19 — "We love because He first loved us."

Psalm 136:1 — "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever."

Pair these verses with a little candy — and a lot of kindness — and you’ll send a message that lasts much longer than Halloween night!

👑 Christian Costume Ideas for Kids This Halloween

Choosing costumes can be fun and faith-centered! Help your kids celebrate heroes of light and courage by picking costumes that reflect God’s truth.

Here are some great ideas:

✝️ Biblical Characters

Moses — carrying the Ten Commandments (made from cardboard)!

Mary or Joseph — simple robes and pure hearts.

🌍 Christian Heroes

Mother Teresa — a simple blue-and-white sari and a heart to serve.

C.S. Lewis — dress as a “scholar adventurer” who loved Jesus and imagination.

Missionaries — represent those who bring God's Word to the world.

🎨 Faith-Themed Fun

Angel — a white outfit, gold tinsel halo, and a smile.

Armor of God — create pieces from cardboard labeled "Faith," "Truth," "Salvation."

Noah’s Ark Animal — pair up with a friend as two by two!

Choosing faith-filled costumes helps kids stand out in the best way — as joyful lights in a sometimes dark night.

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

Growing up on the farm, trick-or-treating meant bundling up in thick coats over costumes and hopping in and out of a cold car. I loved the candy, sure, but the whole thing never made much sense to me.

As a father, I've warmed up to Halloween a little — but the focus on witches, ghouls, and all things scary still bothers me. Thankfully, my children have often chosen costumes that reflect brighter, more wholesome characters.

This year, though, was different. I started looking forward to Halloween all the way back in June — planning, preparing, strategizing. It was going to be a Halloween like no other.

🎈 The Dream: Turning Halloween Into a Mission

Every summer, our neighborhood hosts a big garage sale. My son Parker and I usually run a small food stand — lemonade, coffee, cookies. Last year, we took it up a notch: we added a grill and donated the proceeds to a family whose son has autism. The joy we saw inspired us to think bigger.

This year, the idea struck: let’s turn Halloween into a fundraiser too.

We planned a full-blown event — hot dogs, bratwursts, haunted hamburgers, chilling chili — with lights, music, flyers, and a neighborhood candy stop. Everything lined up perfectly: food sponsors, volunteers, even perfect weather.

I was convinced this would be a night to remember. And it was... just not the way I expected.

🕯️ The Reality: Sometimes Plans Don’t Go Our Way

As night fell, the neighborhood felt quieter than usual. We had some trick-or-treaters, a few sales, a lot of hope. But the "big rush" we dreamed of never came.

By the end of the night, we had made just $32. Before expenses.

I was crushed. Discouraged doesn’t even cover it. It took me until Sunday to even begin to shake off the disappointment. My goal had been $300. We hadn’t even made a dent.

✨ God’s Lesson: Faithfulness Matters More Than Success

It wasn’t until I stopped sulking and started reflecting that I realized the truth:

We had built deeper relationships with our neighbors.

We taught our kids that love is shown not just through money, but through action.

We had fun together.

And yes, we still made a difference — $32 that will bless the Autism Unit at Riley Children's Hospital.

More importantly, God reminded me that our value doesn’t come from how “successful” our efforts seem on paper. It comes from our faithfulness.

In Luke 16:10, Jesus teaches, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” That night, we were entrusted with a little — and I believe we were faithful with it.

🛤️ Moving Forward: Trust the Harvest You Can’t See

Maybe you're carrying some discouragement too — from a plan that fell apart, a goal you didn’t reach, a hope that feels a little bruised.

Let me gently remind you:
Reflection is where growth happens.
Disappointment is just an invitation to trust deeper.
God is always working — even when the harvest looks smaller than you expected.

Lift your head. Smile. Trust that what feels small to you is never small in God's kingdom.

I don’t know what next Halloween will bring, but I already know one thing: it won’t be measured by dollars. It'll be measured by love.

And that's a success story worth telling.

🌟 Reflect and Share:

What "small" success has God used in your life recently?

How can you use setbacks as opportunities to build faith?

Who might need your encouragement this week?

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

As October colors the world with autumn’s beauty, let’s explore some faith-centered ways to celebrate Halloween with your family.

🍬 Trick-or-Treat with Love and Light

The simple joy of trick-or-treating is timeless. Instead of worrying about the spooky themes, why not shine a little light? Dress up with your children, greet neighbors warmly, and hand out candy with a blessing: “God bless you!” or a simple, joyful smile. You might even tuck a Bible verse or encouraging note into treat bags to share God’s love in a fun way.

Philippians 2:15 reminds us to “shine among them like stars in the sky.” Halloween night can be a beautiful time to do just that.

🏡 Deck the Yard with Hope

Decorating your yard can reflect joy instead of fear. Try themes like a harvest festival, a “Light of the World” display (John 8:12), or a colorful autumn celebration. Pumpkins, lanterns, and smiling scarecrows can remind others that Christians celebrate life and hope even when the world leans toward darkness.

🎭 Host a Christ-Centered Costume Party

Hosting a costume party? Encourage fun, creative costumes that celebrate heroes of faith, favorite animals, or favorite historical figures.
Set up games that remind children of Biblical truths — like a “Fruit of the Spirit” scavenger hunt or storytelling sessions about great acts of courage.

👻 Choose Family-Friendly Fun

If you’re considering a haunted house or spooky event, look for alternatives that emphasize fun without glorifying fear. Many churches host "Harvest Festivals" or "Trunk or Treats" — safe, joyful environments where families can gather, play, and reflect on the true harvest of life: love, community, and God's blessings.

Deuteronomy 31:6 encourages us to be strong and courageous, not fearful — even during Halloween!

🦁 Boo at the Zoo (and Celebrate Creation)

Family-friendly events like "Boo at the Zoo" are wonderful. They celebrate the wonder of God's creatures while letting kids have fun in costume. It’s a perfect chance to talk with your children about how God made each animal unique and special (Genesis 1:24-25).

📚 Have a Family Movie Night or Book Time

Host a cozy movie night with family-friendly, uplifting Halloween classics — or choose a suspenseful but hopeful story to read together.
You could even select faith-based adventure tales that spark imagination and remind children that light always overcomes darkness.

🌾 Haunted Hayrides and Local Legends with a Twist

Haunted hayrides and ghost tours can be approached with curiosity but also with discernment. Teach children that while stories are fun, God's truth always anchors us. Consider using local legends as a starting point to discuss real faith heroes or to pray over your town.

🍂 A Season Full of Joy

Halloween doesn’t have to be scary. For believers, it can be a time to celebrate creativity, community, joy, and generosity. Wherever you go and whatever you do, remember:
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden." (Matthew 5:14)

Let’s light up the night with kindness, fun, and faith.

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

Long, complicated crafts can quickly lose the attention of kids, leading to frustration rather than joy. With that in mind, here are some easy and delightful Halloween craft ideas that are quick to make, enjoyable, and result in spooktacular decorations.

Antenna Characters

Why not extend your Halloween spirit to your car with adorable antenna characters? These charming decorations are easy to create and add a playful touch to your vehicle. Start by selecting flat fun foam in Halloween-themed colors like orange, black, white, and green. Draw light outlines of classic Halloween symbols, such as pumpkins, ghosts, spiders, or Frankenstein heads, making each about 4 inches tall and 3 inches wide.

Cut out these shapes and punch two holes—one near the top and one near the bottom. Decorate your characters with glitter glue or permanent markers, adding facial features and other details. Once dry, attach them to your car's antenna. Simply thread the antenna through the bottom hole from the back of the shape to the front, then through the top hole from front to back. These antenna characters should stay secure during normal driving conditions, bringing Halloween cheer wherever you go.

Halloween Mosaics

Mosaic art is a timeless craft, and kids can enjoy a Halloween twist by using construction paper instead of tiles or glass. Begin by preparing small squares of various colored papers—orange, red, blue, yellow, white, black, green, etc. On a piece of heavy stock white paper, draw the outline of a Halloween figure, like a pumpkin or Frankenstein.

Provide each child with a selection of paper squares and some all-purpose glue. They can then create their own mosaic masterpiece by gluing the squares within the outline. This craft not only stimulates creativity but also results in beautiful artworks that can be framed and displayed year after year.

Pumpkin Painting

Pumpkin painting is a delightful and safe alternative to carving, especially for younger children. It allows them to express their creativity without the risks associated with knives. Gather simple supplies such as acrylic paints, markers, newspapers, and a sealer.

Spread newspaper to protect your workspace and let the kids paint whimsical faces or favorite characters onto their pumpkins. They can also explore Halloween motifs or harvest designs. Painted pumpkins have the added advantage of lasting longer than carved ones, making them a cost-effective and safer option. While carving pumpkins is a beloved tradition, face painting adds an extra layer of festive flair. Whether you're looking to scare trick-or-treaters or simply enjoy the artistry, Halloween face painting can be a thrilling activity. Below are some creative ideas for face painting that will help you stand out this Halloween.

Pumpkin

A classic Halloween symbol, the pumpkin can be a simple yet striking design. For a cheek pumpkin, paint a bright orange circle on each side of your cheeks. Use black for the eyes, nose, and mouth, giving your pumpkins a classic jack-o'-lantern expression. Add light grey lines for the outline and ridges to give the design depth.

For a more immersive effect, transform your entire face into a pumpkin. Start with an orange base and use a darker shade of orange to contour your cheekbones. Create black triangles over your eyes, and paint your lips and nose black. This design can be both playful and slightly eerie, making it perfect for Halloween.

Skull

The skull is a timeless Halloween favorite that can be both spooky and sophisticated. Begin with a white base covering your entire face. For the lips, use a bright red color and outline fangs on either side of your mouth in light grey. Fill these fangs with white and add a touch of red at the tips to simulate blood. For a dramatic effect, use smoky grey on your eyelids and accentuate your eyebrows with bold black strokes.

Bat

Transforming your face into a bat design offers a unique and creative challenge. Start with a white base and paint the bat's face above your nose and across your forehead in black. Use light grey for the eyeballs to make them stand out. The bat's body should extend over your nose, ending at the nostrils, using varying shades of black for a realistic look. The wings can be painted over your eyes and mid-cheek area, with light grey highlights to add dimension. Add exaggerated black curls upward from the corners of your lips for a dramatic touch.

Clown

For a more playful and whimsical option, consider a clown face. Use white as your base and add bright red circles on your cheeks. Paint a large, exaggerated red smile that extends beyond your natural lips. For the eyes, use blue eyeshadow or paint to create exaggerated teardrop shapes, and outline them in black. Add some colorful accents, like a rainbow-colored wig or oversized bowtie, to complete the look.

These ideas are just a starting point. The internet is a treasure trove of face painting designs and tutorials, offering inspiration for every level of expertise. A quick search can yield countless ideas, complete with pictures and step-by-step instructions.

When it comes to face painting, practice makes perfect. If you're painting your own face, take your time and use a mirror to ensure symmetry. Alternatively, make it a family affair by painting each other's faces. Before you begin, gather all the necessary supplies, including face paints, brushes, and sponges. These can be found at craft stores or specialized paint shops.

Face painting is a fantastic way to celebrate Halloween, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festivities. Just remember to remove the paint before going to bed to prevent skin irritation. With a little creativity and some practice, you can create stunning face paint designs that will make this Halloween unforgettable.

© Layne McDonald. There are some basic rules that will help the meal preparation and presentation go a little more smoothly if you'll follow them. Hopefully that advice below will help you get through your spook fest and enjoy a great dinner too.

Most people who have a huge Halloween party will find that they will be interrupted throughout the evening with trick or treaters seeking the perfect treat. While we want to enjoy the ghosts, goblins, kings, and princesses gracing our stoop we also do not want to burn the food we are working hard to prepare. For this reason we need to select foods that require little attention during the preparation process rather than foods that are quite time consuming and attention demanding.

Crock pots are a blessing to have around on a night like Halloween. You can begin the food cooking well before the little goblins begin their appointed rounds and have the dishes you've prepared kept warm while you're waiting for guests to arrive or doling out treats at your front door, whatever the necessity of the moment may be. You can even cook normal favorites in the crock pot or cook them on the stove and use the crock pot to keep them warm.

Some excellent spooky crock pot ideas include spaghetti brains. Prepare the sauce and the noodles ahead of time separately. Mix the sauce in the noodles and keep them warming together in the crock pot. Meatball eyes are another crock pot favorite. Stuff the meatballs with one stuffed olive eyeball and place in spaghetti sauce. Bat wings (which are actually chicken wings) with your favorite sauce are also excellent in the crock pot. Sloppy Joes can also be prepared and stored in the crock pot then served open faced over buns with small triangle cheese slices for eye and a pickle for eyeballs and a large triangle of cheese for the mouth.

Another great Halloween cooking idea is to prepare as much as possible ahead of time. There are all kinds of frightening and ghastly goodies that can be made ahead of time and stored for the big day. Make your spooky offerings such as dips that can be made cold and used for veggies, which can also be chopped ahead of time, can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for the big day. Cookies can be baked and decorated and stored in advance. Devilled egg white mice can be made earlier in the day and stored in the fridge on waxed paper.

The Internet is full of great recipe ideas for delicious and devious Halloween desserts, snacks, and treats. There are far too many to try them all. However, if you have favorite foods that are easy to prepare and a good party food you might want to search the net for a manner of making the food more appropriate to a Halloween theme. You can make your own pizza a little spookier by decorating it in a manner that is spooky or painting pictures, such as a jack o lantern face with pizza sauce. There are plenty of things you can do to raise the fear factor even on family favorites if you use a little creativity and give it a fancy name (like spaghetti brains).

The most important thing about Halloween as a holiday is that it gives children of all ages the perfect excuse to use their imaginations and play pretend. The food you cook doesn't have to be too terribly spooky in order to be a perfect fit for the theme of the day. A few simple adjustments, a little dash of food color, and a lot of imagination can make any meal so much more Halloween worthy in the end.

© Layne McDonald. In that case, we need to think it through and take advantage of programs that have successfully mandated community service for kids and have had success.

There are ample examples of youth organizations that have worked community service into their programs so successfully that the youth enthusiastically perform the service and have a lot of fun with it. And that is the spirit you want everyone to have on a community service project, adult and youth alike. Often, voluntary school programs such as band, academic clubs, and other competitive societies such as chess or debate clubs will include a form of community service as part of the requirements for membership. The service can be integrated with the activity, such as having the chess club members spend a day a month at the shelter teaching chess to homeless kids. The youth associate their ambitions to become great at the skill they seek by sharing it with others.

Churches and youth organizations not affiliated with schools have also wildly succeeded with community service. When you see a youth group outside the church walls, you can bet they are probably busy painting someone's porch, feeding the less fortunate, or doing something of value for the community. The church can put a positive slant on it that fits with the organization's mission by calling it a ìmission to our townî, but the outcome is the same.

One of the most outstanding examples of an organization that turns community service into a value eagerly sought by its youth is the Boy Scouts of America. In Boy Scouts, young men must complete several organized service hours to make the next rank in scouting. The program places a high value on advancing in rank, which is rewarded with pomp and circumstance during the advancement ceremony and badges for their uniforms, which young men pursue with zeal.

The key is to tie the community service to something the youth want to do. If mandatory community service is integrated with advancement, achievement, and rewards, the short-term off is all a kid needs to roll up their sleeves and get in there and work. And if they have fun side by side with adults they admire, you have a formula for a program of mandatory community service for youth that is sure to be a success.

© Layne McDonald. And there is no better place for them to do that than in community service.

There are a variety of reasons why volunteering among the elderly is a great idea. If you are in a position to counsel an aging family member or friend, it is important to remember that community service is not all about being charitable and helping the down and out. It is just as much about the health and well-being of the retiree as it is for the good of the community and the people in it.

By getting out into the community and finding rewarding ways to perform community service, that sense of being needed and being a part of something is returned to the retiree. Community service and the retirement set are a perfect match for each other. People who are staffing community service projects always need an army of qualified and mature help, especially from those who have sufficient time to do an excellent job with a community service project.

This is right for retiree who, if anything, suffer with too much time on their hands. Too often, that time can be turned to self-pity or indulging in less-than-healthy lifestyle choices. Community service is, after all, work. As people enjoying the rewards from a lifetime of work, this is just the thing to transition to a life of retirement.

Community service can also call upon older people to participate in physical activity. Your local community service coordinator can now ensure their elderly volunteers are given assignments appropriate to their physical abilities. But just getting out there and greeting others, reading to the blind, helping with a food or blood drive, or jumping in where they can on an extensive community project gets the blood moving and maybe just the right kind of exercise they need to stay active and healthy.

Community service also provides opportunities to socialize with people of all ages and social backgrounds. One of the greatest dangers of a retirement lifestyle is the loneliness and isolation caused by stepping out of the working world. Even if the older adult lives in a retirement community, the chance to socialize with younger people and people of many backgrounds and orientations is tremendously healthy for the mental stability of one in that stage of life.

There are many benefits to the retiree of getting involved in community service. But giving that retired person that sense of personal value and worth they have come to expect from each dayís work is valuable beyond measurement. Many community service projects are short-term, so the volunteers get that immediate gratification that boosts anyone, but even more so, a retiree who feels left out and not helpful. Community service may be just the medicine to cure those ills.

© Layne McDonald. In that case, you can help with the collection of goods and the organization of what is given in preparation for delivery.

Many civic organizations collect mountains of toys, clothing, and canned goods that will be split into packages for thousands of families who need such things during the holidays. You can find such an organization and make an appointment to meet at their warehouse and help sort out the goods that have come in and package them up for delivery. It's hard work, but as you and your family work to prepare these presents for others lovingly, it is much more meaningful and in touch with the season's spirit. Everybody will remember that Christmas for a long time to come.

But to make the joy of Christmas become the joy of reaching out to others, serving Christmas dinner to people experiencing homelessness or to those who are down and out will be an experience that will change the way your children view Christmas forever. You do not necessarily have to open your home to strangers to show hospitality to others. Understandably, having people you donít know around your table at home could be a little frightening and more than you are ready to take on.

But if you can include in your Christmas Eve or Christmas Day festivities that after the gifts are opened and the big Christmas meal is done, everybody gets in the cars and goes to the shelter to share their love and to serve dinner to others the way they have generously received it, that will go a long way toward capturing the spirit of the holiday for those you are helping and for your family as well. For all involved, it will indeed be a different kind of Christmas.

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.

In order for cordless phones to function properly, they must be used within a specified proximity to the base. Most individuals find that they can use their cordless phones throughout the house or in the yard without interruption.

In their earliest days, rotary telephones were common and required nothing more than a connection to a landline. Cordless phones require the same, along with an electrical outlet in order to charge the internal battery. This function is what allows the telephone to operate when away from the base and these batteries are automatically recharged when the phone is not in use. After years of use, the battery may need to be replaced. This can often be difficult on older models, but a compatible battery can sometimes be purchased directly from the manufacturer. In some cases, it may be less expensive to purchase a whole new phone than to replace a battery in the old model.

Years ago, there was growing concern about the privacy related to using cordless phones. The potential for conversations to be picked up by nearby baby monitors, radios and other devices was troubling to many. However, the manufacturers of cordless phones have stepped up to increase their security. In order to receive the best privacy, a 900mhz or better cordless phones are recommended.

The convenience of cordless phones is undeniable. With their invention, it is now possible to have the telephone with you literally wherever you go. This is especially valuable to elderly people who live alone and need to have a telephone nearby. Anyone who needs to have quick access to a phone will find great comfort in the presence of cordless phones. In addition, the clarity is much greater than the previous rotary models. With a clear conversation and the ultimate convenience, cordless phones have quickly become a staple in every household.

Many individuals are selecting the double handset models, which only require one telephone line but allow for two different bases to be located throughout the house. This is especially desirable for the household with only one landline connection, but has the desire for more than one telephone. A dual handset is like having two telephones, but only requires one hookup. With prices starting at $10.00 for basic cordless phones or $50.00 for a dual handset, there is an option for every budget.

© Layne McDonald. I wish I could say that it was to accommodate the needs of our customers, but sadly, that isn't the case. You see, our old phone system had many more extensions than we had lines for. It was built with the assumption that inter-office communications would be utilized more than incoming and outgoing calls. Since my company deals primarily with internet business and doesn't do much in the way of transactions over the phone, the system I put in place in the late 90's had served us well until very recently. As of late, I have had vendors who had traditionally reached me by phone sending me e-mails. They were complaining that it's often impossible to get through to me. I looked into the matter and this is what I foundÖ Most of my employees were spending a great deal of time talking on the phone. They weren't talking to vendors, customers, service providers or other business entities. Instead, they were utilizing the phone for personal reasons.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not the type of boss who thinks it's never acceptable to talk on the phone. I understand that during the workday, things are inevitably bound to come up which require an employees' attention. We've all been there. Perhaps a child is sick or the car is in the shop needing repairs. I understand that these things often require time spent on the phone. Judging from the traffic on my lines and the astronomical phone bills I was receiving, however, this was way beyond what I think any employer would consider acceptable.

So, I decided to replace the old phone system. The new system has a line for every extension, including mine, so that vendors or anyone else will be able to reach me at any time. Since the new phone system also offers increased functionality, I had an additional feature programmed in.

Now, whenever someone makes an outgoing call, they must dial in their own code so that both the number they call and the times spent are recorded. These records are matched to the phone bill and all employees are required to mark the non-business related calls they make each month. Since the calls bear their code, they cannot say it wasn't them who made the call. Of course, they must pay for these calls. I have noticed that phone times (and my phone bills) have decreased substantially.

© Layne McDonald. Wireless AMBER Alerts Put Wireless Devices To Use

Statistics show that the first three hours after a child's abduction are most critical to recovery efforts. By combining the efforts of the wireless industry with the U.S. Department of Justice, the National Center for Missing & Exploited ChildrenÆ (NCMEC) and law enforcement agencies, the Wireless AMBER Alerts™ initiative will be a catalyst for the more than 200 million wireless subscribers to aid in the search for and recovery of an abducted child.

AMBER

According to NCMEC, more than 260 children have been recovered since the AMBER Alert program began in 1997. The program-an early warning system to find abducted children-started as a local effort in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area and became a national initiative in 2003. AMBER stands for "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response." The program is a legacy to Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas, and was later found murdered.

An estimated 70 percent of Americans have wireless phones, and together they can serve as a national network that assists families and the authorities in searching for abducted children. By signing up to receive Wireless AMBER Alerts, subscribers receive information about local Alerts, as well as updates as the search progresses.

Opting In

Subscribers capable of receiving text messages, and whose wireless carrier participates in the Wireless AMBER Alerts initiative, may opt in to receive Alerts by registering at www.wirelessamberalerts.org or their wireless carrier's Web site. Users can designate up to five ZIP codes from which they'd like to be alerted in the case of an AMBER Alert activation.

Public Service

Advertising Campaign

The Advertising Council, in partnership with NCMEC, The Wireless Foundation and the U.S Department of Justice, launched a multimedia public service advertising (PSA) campaign designed to raise awareness of Wireless AMBER Alerts and encourage all wireless subscribers to aid in the search for abducted children. It is the first nationwide PSA campaign to address this technology and the ads launched on National Missing Children's Day (May 25th).

Wireless subscribers can now sign up to receive free AMBER Alerts via text messages.

© Layne McDonald. You can easily monitor your network for problems and troubleshooting is much simpler with web based applications rather than hardware applications. VoIP uses less bandwidth than other applications and this in the long run saves money. This is of special value to businesses. Businesses can also provide better customer service with integrated programs. Not only does this increase productivity, but also it saves time and money in the long run.

2.	VoIP Saves You Money

Overall, VoIP is much more inexpensive then PSTN. You simply pay for your Internet service, and then whichever VoIP provider you choose. For a one time monthly fee, you can have unlimited local and long distance phone calls. You will need to check with the VoIP service provider that you choose for exact details on their rates. Sometimes, your VoIP service provider will allow free calls within the world to another computer, yet there may be a fee for calls worldwide to a landline phone. Always check with your chosen service provider for exact details regarding your chosen plan. Included in many VoIP service plans are free features. These features include Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Do Not Disturb, and more. Again, check with your chosen service provider for an overview of all the features bundled with your plan. The biggest benefit is the unlimited long distance calling. This has proven to be the number one reason why most businesses are switching to VoIP. For businesses such as sales or jobs that have mobile employees, these benefits go without saying. But overall, the average cost of VoIP is considerably less when compared to the cost of PSTN.

3.	VoIP Enables you to Talk with More than One Person at a Time

With VoIP, you can talk with more than one person without paying extra for services such as three way calling. With VoIP you can have more than three people on the phone at once. VoIP is the perfect solution for those who want to explore the features of conference calls. This is very important for businesses that have employees overseas. By using the video conferencing features, employers will increase their productivity.

4.	Enjoy Greater Flexibility

By using VoIP, you can take your VoIP equipment with you whenever you travel. Your VoIP service provider will send you a converter that will allow you to use your converter with any standard telephone. The converter comes programmed with your telephone number, allowing you to take your phone and phone number with you worldwide. All you will need is a high speed Internet connection and you can use your VoIP phone service. This is of extreme benefit to mobile employees. No longer are outdated telecommunications systems necessary, or are employees trying to run businesses on prepaid cell phone plans. By using VoIP, an employee will have access to his/her phone number, wherever they are located. Whether out of state, in a hotel, or traveling on a business trip, customers will be able to call the same number as well as leave voice mail on the employeeís computer.

5. You can Save Money for Family and Friends by Choosing Your Area Code

Many VoIP service providers will give you the option of selecting your own area code number. This is a tremendous benefit to family and friend members who can call you locally, if you select the same area code number.

© Layne McDonald. Expand your market. Toll-free numbers allow you to use the same number for receiving local toll and state-to-state calls. This gives you the opportunity to market your business nationwide. Even if you don't provide service in certain areas, toll-free numbers have the flexibility to block calls from those areas.

2. Advertise your number. Toll-free numbers lend an air of legitimacy and professionalism to your business. By using a toll-free number, your business may appear larger and more established to the consumer which will make him/her trust you more.

3. Initiate a direct response mechanism for impulse buyers. By allowing your customers an avenue to immediately react to your company's efforts calling for their action, this prompts significant increases in phone orders. It has been found that these buyers generally order more merchandise and higher ticket items nearly every time they call.

4. Qualify your buyers. Toll-free numbers enable your business to use time more efficiently and effectively. With a toll-free number, you know that someone who has called your business is already interested in what you have to offer. You spend less time trying to find interested prospects and let the number find them for you.

5. Analyze your call detail. Toll-free numbers allow you to track calls and access all of a call's details such as the number, time, date and duration of every call. This information cannot be blocked and is an excellent tool for generating leads which can lead to more sales.

#Communication

© Layne McDonald. We live in a world of e-mail, text and instant messages and mobile conversations.

While such options make it easy to stay in touch, these technologies have also lessened the emotional aspect of our communications.

Here are a few suggestions on how to use technology to stay close to loved ones and, at the same time, bring back the personal element in your communications.

* Send a personal DVD message. Now you can give the gift of vivid, colorful memories by creating personalized DVD messages for your friends and family. It's a fast, easy and fun way to stay in touch.

Can't make it to your high school reunion? Use a Sony DVD Handycam camcorder to record a special message to old classmates. You can even get special Sony DVD mail envelopes to share your discs.

Encourage friends and family to reciprocate. When you receive their DVDs, just pop them into your player as you would a movie.

* Make a Webcam chat date. A picture tells a thousand words, but real-time video speaks volumes. While nothing can replace an in-person conversation, you can get awfully close to the real thing with a Webcam chat.

Gather your loved ones in front of the Webcam to talk, view photos or share advice.

First time carving the turkey? Get Dad on the Webcam - he can probably walk you through it. Schedule your chat on a special occasion - perhaps on a birthday or holiday - and don't forget to plan your next one. You can even make it an annual event.

* Create a video file on your digital still camera. Forgot your mom's birthday or couldn't attend your child's school play? Send your loved ones a video clip so that they'll know how much you care.

Be creative, shake things up and share your ideas. It's never been so easy to "be there when you're not." - NU

© Layne McDonald. All Rights Reserved.
