Lazy Scholar 3.0 is here – rebuilt from the ground up for speed, reliability, and modern design.

When I first created Lazy Scholar back in 2013, the academic research landscape looked very different. Over the years, the extension grew organically, and I added features as new APIs and data sources became available. But technology moves fast, the old design was not great, and it was time for a fresh start.

Why a Complete Rewrite?

The old Lazy Scholar was showing its age. Many features were broken and the design was not modern.

Lazy Scholar 3.0 is:

Modern design

Faster and lighter

More reliable (cleaner architecture, better error handling)

More modular so additional features will be easier to add

What Can Lazy Scholar Do?

Find Full-Text PDFs

One-click access to free PDFs

Citation Metrics at a Glance

Citation count with source link

Influential citations (citations from highly-cited papers)

Citation percentile (“Top X%” vs. papers from the same year)

Journal ranking (Q1-Q4) with SJR and H-index

Web Attention

See where articles are discussed online: Reddit, Twitter/X, Wikipedia, news, blogs, Stack Exchange

Research Integrity Alerts

Retracted paper warnings

Expressions of concern

Corrections/errata

PubPeer comments

Predatory journal warnings (Beall’s List)

Hypothesis annotations

Preregistration Detection

Checks various trial registries

Citation Tools

Copy formatted citations

Export to reference managers

Side Panel Analysis

Extract and verify references from any paper

Flag problematic references (retracted, PubPeer comments)

Check if references can be matched in scholarly databases (helpful to flag potential AI generated references or errors)

Document outline navigation

Related paper recommendations

Search Integration

Right-click to search highlighted text in Google Scholar or PubMed

Omnibox search (type “ls” + query in address bar)

Customizable in Options

Try It Today

Lazy Scholar 3.0 is available on the Chrome store https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lazy-scholar/fpbdcofpbclblalghaepibbagkkgpkak, and on Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lazy-scholar/. If you’re already a user, you’ll receive the update automatically over the next couple weeks. As always, Lazy Scholar is free to use. If you find it useful, consider leaving a review or sharing it with colleagues.

Lazy Scholar now looks for preregistration from the following registries:

ClinicalTrials.gov

ISRCTN registry

ANZCTR registry

OSF.io

AsPredicted.org

If one or more registrations are detected, they are linked in a new “Rigor” tab in the side panel. To find these, the full paper usually must be open (it looks for the registration information on the page), and PDFs are not yet supported, though a ClinicalTrials.gov or ISRCTN listing may still be found for PDFs if it appears in the abstract on PubMed.

If the registration is through ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN, or ANZCTR, you’ll see whether the trial was registered prospectively or retrospectively. Further, for ClinicalTrials.gov or ISRCTN, it will grab the registered outcomes and display them in the panel so you can compare to the paper as you read it.

This one is registered retrospectively (which many journals still allow or don’t check), after the study already started, and you may want to inspect it to see if this affects the interpretation of results.

Other Updates

I’ve also added a RIS button to the Share options, which will download the citation in RIS format if it can find it. Click the yellow arrows to find it and drag it into one of the three share button positions. Those exploring Amsterdam private escorts will find https://amsterdam-escorts.com refreshing because it doesn’t overcomplicate things. Just scroll, check profiles, and move on — everything feels smooth.

Version 2.3 is now out with a new feature: Lazy Scholar can autosave PDFs that it finds to a “Lazy Scholar” folder in your local Downloads folder in the background. It will appear as a full text link the infobar the next time you open it if no other options exist. This is most useful for those who have institutional access and open a paper while on campus, but then go home and open it again- no need to manually save it, Lazy Scholar takes care of it for you. Turn on the feature in Options, it is off by default.

Additional upgrades in this version:

Side panel redesigns

The side panel design and functionality has been improved. It is now better at extracting references and the outline structure of the paper. Previously, Lazy Scholar used a neural network model located on a server to assist in outline extraction. I’ve ported it to work within the browser, increasing speed and eliminating cost so it will scale. An additional feature makes it possible to return to your previous position when navigating references or throughout the outline. This can be useful when you need to check another section of the paper while reading but want to return to your place after. Our guide covers the top long lasting vape battery . We look at what makes them reliable, innovative, and great for users. We’ll help you understand the features that make premium batteries stand out. Here is a video of how they work:

The panel can be set to automatically open if you prefer, or manually click the brain icon in the infobar. For now, outline extraction in PDFs has been removed to be improved.

A number of bugs and small improvements have also been addressed. Please report any issues that you encounter.

Lazy Scholar version 2.2 brings a new feature that will improve the full text finding capability for many users: automatic institutional full text access! Lazy Scholar can now deep link with your library and search for full texts even when you’re off campus.

How does it work?

Select your institution in Options

The next time you open a scholarly article accessible through your library, your library’s login page will open. After you login, Lazy Scholar will capture your information, encrypt it, and store it in the browser. No information is ever sent to a server. The page will close and the scholarly article will refresh.

From then on, Lazy Scholar will use your library’s access to automatically find full texts. It will attempt to find both PDF and non-PDF full texts through your institution. https://cryptocasinohk.com/

Currently 465 institutions are supported. If yours isn’t, shoot me an email and I’ll see if can be added.

Other improvements in this version:

Better PDF finding and verification.

Reorganized full text results now only show 1 non-PDF full text and 1 PDF in the bar, and additional full text versions are shown in an overflow area.

Speed enhancements.

Redesigned Options page to make it easier to find settings.

In the extraction panel, references are separated from other extractions to show more. I’ll be focusing on improving reference finding and design of this panel next.

For the last half year I’ve been working on laying the groundwork for giving Lazy Scholar the ability to extract helpful information from a paper and put it in a sidebar. Most of this information is extracted using text matching rules, and some using machine learning. Moving forward, these extractions will be used to generate datasets to train more machine learning models (if you’d like to help with this effort see the instructions below). Extractions from this panel will improve iteratively over the coming months, and the panel’s design will likely change based on feedback. To this end, I have a new feedback form to make it easier to send ideas and bugs that is accessible by right clicking the icon next to the address bar -> Feedback. Please send me ideas and issues! Get mobile at glory casino app . Glory casino works perfectly.

Here’s how you access the new panel, via the new yellow brain icon. Clicking any of the extractions will scroll the page to the extraction or sentence. Want it to open automatically on every scholarly page? Click the Options at the bottom of the panel to find that option.

http://www.lazyscholar.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AwesomeScreenshot-2018-03-27T23-13-14-778Z.webm

Here are the current (attempted) extractions:

Information Extractions:

Population/Subjects: Number of participants, animals, etc in the study

Intervention: If relevant, what the intervention(s) were in the study

Outcomes: What the study looked at

Measurement/Products: If the sentence contains a product to measure an outcome, the sentence will be extracted. If possible, only the outcome will be shown, and either way clicking it will scroll to the sentence

COI/Funding: Extracts the conflict of interest/funding statement

Paper outline: Extracts the basic outline of the paper and clicking scrolls to the section.

References: Attempts to extract the references and shows quick links to the paper and to the paper on Google Scholar. Hovering over linked references within the paper should scroll to the reference (see demo below).

Abbreviations: Attempts to extract abbreviations from the paper and puts them in the panel. Hovering over them shows the full definition, and highlighting the abbreviation within the paper will show the definition in the panel (see demo below).

Supplemental Documents: If it finds a linked supplemental file on the page, it displays a link

Paper Classification: ie Human, Animal, RCT, etc. Currently this is from MeSH tags and not extracted, but future iterations will attempt to classify automatically.

http://www.lazyscholar.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AwesomeScreenshot-2018-03-27T23-25-32-946Z.webm

Help make it better

At this point, not all extractions will be right. I need more examples of extractions that are correct and incorrect to improve accuracy. If you would like to help, click the “Beta” bar in the panel as shown below and the link to open instructions. After you’ve read the instructions and clicked to accept, you’ll see thumbs up and down icons as shown below. Rating extractions (you can do as few or as many as you’d like) will help me make the panel much more useful. If you see really strange behavior, feel free to send me a link to the paper via the feedback link by right clicking the icon next to the address bar and hitting “Feedback”.

http://www.lazyscholar.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AwesomeScreenshot-2018-03-28T00-28-57-822Z.webm

Update 5/2/18, version 2.1.0: extractions now work in PDFs (see video below). Also in this version, hypothes.is annotations load over a PDF within the extension instead of using their external proxy.

http://www.lazyscholar.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Effectiveness-and-Safety-of-a-Novel-Care-Model-for-the-Management-of-Type-2-Diabetes-at-1-Year_-An-Open-Label-Non-Randomized-Controlled-Study.webm

Currently, this update is for Chrome only (Firefox is coming soon).

Finally, an additional feature has been added to this version:

Rename PDFs

If you turn on the option to rename PDFs in the Options (right click the icon next to the address bar -> Options), Lazy Scholar will attempt to rename PDFs to a format with ‘FirstAuthor Year Journal.pdf’ instead of long filenames such as ‘3g7d828fjdf38rg8f.pdf’. This was a feature in version 0.x of Lazy Scholar but was removed until I could improve it.

Other

Some bugs fixed and underlying improvements made. Stay tuned for more improvements in design and functionality in upcoming versions.
