<a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/books/bestsellers/simple-crocheting.html?media=blogpost&utm_medium=SOME&utm_campaign=blogpost&utm_content=links%20in%20blog%20posts&utm_source=www.knitpicks.com" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPGs0dX-MX_hj_1fhkv-AyfMgf7jyaaR4KaHaQTkcKH9SyR5CnZUiHszs16V0EPZZnJWKpn4GOzoyaK8z6yHjCaGxdG7HWveHUyVDC78nPP1DoN7v3pVlUKBEYBIXfUF0_HdMd_OxDlQs/s400/51shTOfCNFL._SX260_PJlook-inside-v2,TopRight,1,0_SH20_.jpg" width="303" /></a></center>
<br />
Actually, it's going to be longer than a year for this project because it's already been a year and I still have a lot more to do. It may end up being the 2-year project. We'll see. But I digress.<br />
<br />
It all started with Erika Knight's fabulous book <a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/books/bestsellers/simple-crocheting.html" target="_blank">Simple Crocheting: A Complete How-to-Crochet Workshop with 20 Projects</a> over at <a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/" target="_blank">KnitPicks</a>. I had ordered this when KnitPicks was having a 40% off sale on some of their books and I was stuck with not much to do in Hyder, AK, besides play in mud and watch bears (see previous <a href="http://lazydayexpressions.blogspot.com/2012/08/mud-fun-and-giveaway-reminder.html" target="_blank">post</a>). The very first thing I wanted to make was the blanket near the back of the book. Of course I don't have the book with me here in Juneau so I can't show you a picture, but let me just say that the color choices were not the best. However, I really liked the pattern. I thought, "Oooo, I can make that really cute in two colors (light pink and grey) and it would make an awesome baby blanket." Ya, that was a year ago. I think I'm about half way there. Ugh!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEVPeiW94X10OPa68V9IUMih_urKxDeEWD9qWpznNqrlPgloiRXYvsOOKjSYSXPk8p8Rw9uod70XMiDhVE6ySwumHIiQM_6XHzEwifrNDl5G_xvwYOk3DNkdTEGOgtTiWJCFshyphenhyphene8ZcuM/s1600/IMG_4748.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEVPeiW94X10OPa68V9IUMih_urKxDeEWD9qWpznNqrlPgloiRXYvsOOKjSYSXPk8p8Rw9uod70XMiDhVE6ySwumHIiQM_6XHzEwifrNDl5G_xvwYOk3DNkdTEGOgtTiWJCFshyphenhyphene8ZcuM/s400/IMG_4748.JPG" width="400" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKeBEH4QpJtXE5yVeGPehUO21XNs9-QEdz2VNfhT-Xd9xiGeui_nkunzEzs1NlJujQlJvD1zrr78MPh0MymRGE_biDRo3-zbevUzOYV_sbUNqqtkwE1XUMyx5ft0EAfB1BnyOpQESdngo/s1600/IMG_4750.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKeBEH4QpJtXE5yVeGPehUO21XNs9-QEdz2VNfhT-Xd9xiGeui_nkunzEzs1NlJujQlJvD1zrr78MPh0MymRGE_biDRo3-zbevUzOYV_sbUNqqtkwE1XUMyx5ft0EAfB1BnyOpQESdngo/s400/IMG_4750.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
I'm using the <a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/yarn-fiber/comfy-fingering-yarn.html" target="_blank">Comfy Fingering Yarn</a> from KnitPicks for this project, so the squares end up only being about 2.75 inches. That results in the need for A LOT of squares. I calculated it out to about 200 squares (100 pink, 100 grey) for the size of blanket I'm wanting. I figured it out, and it's going to take me about 67 hours (not counting the border) to get this thing made. Sometimes I'll sit down and do a bunch of them at one time, and then I'll go weeks without doing anything. It's one of those kinds of projects :).<br />
<br />
Today was one of those days where I sat down for a little bit while the girls did some schoolwork and I crocheted up a couple and added them to my stack. It felt good to get back at it. One of the best parts is that I get to use my favorite hook. If you hop on over to <a href="http://www.lisaclarke.net/handmades/?lrc=menu" target="_blank">Polka Dot Cottage</a>, you'll meet Lisa Clarke and find yourself mesmerized by all the beautiful polymer clay work that she does. Her crochet hooks are seriously my favorite. I refuse to use anything else (and NO she is not paying me to say that - it's just the truth). I happen to be partial to blues so my "F" hook is my very favorite :). She even makes a little indent where your thumb goes that makes it so comfortable to use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUSapB3i9XhKSX7QWp4u7b94Lef6hk8qz5NC1X_bwAgwTqIFgAXS4hNp-M_iYsCuIznkvlemXwxifyZ8pWRjyVrIKS-YQbc8M0qfuPjPvMKfFf2doPwEfRABxIE57OaVbfgxWROKhEWwg/s1600/Polymer+Crochet+Hook.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUSapB3i9XhKSX7QWp4u7b94Lef6hk8qz5NC1X_bwAgwTqIFgAXS4hNp-M_iYsCuIznkvlemXwxifyZ8pWRjyVrIKS-YQbc8M0qfuPjPvMKfFf2doPwEfRABxIE57OaVbfgxWROKhEWwg/s400/Polymer+Crochet+Hook.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We'll see how far I get on this thing by the time we get back to Washington (which should be some time in September). I foresee a post where I lay out all the squares I have by the end of September so you can all see where I'm at. Who knows, maybe it will give me a spur to get the thing done before the end of the year. Then again, I just may be talking about it again next summer :)Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767003659738863778noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508791223726174726.post-44732684532499577292013-07-19T18:29:00.000-07:002013-07-19T18:29:41.710-07:00Trip to Mendenhall Glacier<center>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Where we're staying here in Juneau, we're just a few miles away from the Mendenhall Glacier attraction. It's a great place to visit on a nice sunny day, so that's exactly what we did. Along the trail, there are lots of rock walls and boulders to climb, lots of babbling creeks to explore, etc. The girls had a blast climbing everything they could find.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCIVz2XKQKUYaGzUVBl_Al-3VLkhw2vq63lwtATJYHOyzxUP-MY7WLYZ6DslJzEKkQfwWY5W1UAL6-tSWt_BZ3wusT2xO7dJ8tGPK5fLfCPSbIVn0pJKgIqqNT-IrSGaFDAj1EzcbpBgg/s1600/Flowers+on+path+to+Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCIVz2XKQKUYaGzUVBl_Al-3VLkhw2vq63lwtATJYHOyzxUP-MY7WLYZ6DslJzEKkQfwWY5W1UAL6-tSWt_BZ3wusT2xO7dJ8tGPK5fLfCPSbIVn0pJKgIqqNT-IrSGaFDAj1EzcbpBgg/s400/Flowers+on+path+to+Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
And, there were a ton of these flowers all along the trail. I had to restrain the girls from picking them all. So, instead, they decided to try and smell them all. They're so funny.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoggZ9r2XdbEaDgnIfkXF6v6bm0WJmd5w-zUBt4sj9O7LlW6q0dHHrJ8O-xw0bwDM8JCF8hcSikuTENrZ0TfhMQNH__R7-_JzzZ3VXacu6rLQ_W0-6gmQAVxWE8SRwzWYxUGFosTZPavI/s1600/Kaitlyn+on+path+to+Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoggZ9r2XdbEaDgnIfkXF6v6bm0WJmd5w-zUBt4sj9O7LlW6q0dHHrJ8O-xw0bwDM8JCF8hcSikuTENrZ0TfhMQNH__R7-_JzzZ3VXacu6rLQ_W0-6gmQAVxWE8SRwzWYxUGFosTZPavI/s400/Kaitlyn+on+path+to+Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
It was a REALLY warm day so Kaitlyn decided to tie her jacket around her. She tried to get me to carry it for her, but I've gotten to the point where I'm making the girls carry their own stuff. Otherwise, I'm always loaded down....not fun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP5hwhPFxpN_HGu6k_f46VuU9-KG6gSFRJXKQfJAKN25xDTxz1g286c993VGCGE9cyHV52fVjY0sMYswEFXvoOt7X6P2aucnueR-a2xk3mop914rhZzoPtOCLbNN0eGmlx14Kr20wG968/s1600/Girls+Pointing+to+Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP5hwhPFxpN_HGu6k_f46VuU9-KG6gSFRJXKQfJAKN25xDTxz1g286c993VGCGE9cyHV52fVjY0sMYswEFXvoOt7X6P2aucnueR-a2xk3mop914rhZzoPtOCLbNN0eGmlx14Kr20wG968/s400/Girls+Pointing+to+Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Where's the glacier, girls?"</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
With all the "detours" and rock climbing the girls did, it took us about an hour to actually get to the spot we were headed for. But, once we got there, it was totally worth the wait.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHlpXeQ2puQU1rpzFCZem6_SB7xkk8quB7RqGJWoJwcjU2G4VKSjnGgT483W65_gBX9Qa0C1oEXqd24cXveotPw9Du2k3TC-iUeK9oRl2W1urVOORZb58mo-qgR0J0fjJwEwBefFRsmak/s1600/Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHlpXeQ2puQU1rpzFCZem6_SB7xkk8quB7RqGJWoJwcjU2G4VKSjnGgT483W65_gBX9Qa0C1oEXqd24cXveotPw9Du2k3TC-iUeK9oRl2W1urVOORZb58mo-qgR0J0fjJwEwBefFRsmak/s400/Mendenhall+Glacier.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And, here's a close-up:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the best parts was at the end of our trail there was a gorgeous waterfall.</div>

<br />
It was a great day. The girls played in the water, which in quite a few areas wasn't totally freezing. We also met up with Anthony's sister and her kids. We're definitely going back there soon.<br />
<br />

I had the doors open and the kids stayed out playing a "bit" after their bedtimes. I usually like to get them down and snuggled in no later than 8:30, but they were engrossed in a little project and playing so well together that I just watched them through the window and didn't go out to get them until a little after 9:00. By then, they had construction the site that you see here:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFgk4b7tJapDXmE2rBybKr9afmJvaQNJ_5fGkxMiEWBthqQHVPH6c1Dg2IxiWIHjF28S60BVaFVKxwKIAXyEgb-6_fY9FpiKPoTJepwncbckOjyEBKtbGyLUiuuKsBtfkUq-WjT3Dcts/s1600/IMG_4664.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLFgk4b7tJapDXmE2rBybKr9afmJvaQNJ_5fGkxMiEWBthqQHVPH6c1Dg2IxiWIHjF28S60BVaFVKxwKIAXyEgb-6_fY9FpiKPoTJepwncbckOjyEBKtbGyLUiuuKsBtfkUq-WjT3Dcts/s400/IMG_4664.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Previously, it had just been dirt. Yes, they transplanted weeds, flowers, and all - along with making the cross.<br />
I asked them if they had buried a bug or something and Alexis replied, "No Mommy. We were thinking about Jesus and how He died for us, so we made this for Him." It was very touching. We talked about how He's no longer dead and that He's with us all the time. Alexis said, "I know that. I just wanted to build something for Him and I didn't have big enough rocks to build the open tomb." So sweet.<br />
<br />

If you click on the pictures, you can see a little bigger version of it. I like all the little details they added to the "site".<br />

Have you ever been to the website <a href="http://www.floorplanner.com/">www.floorplanner.com</a> ?</center>
<left><br />
I found this site awhile back when Anthony and I were talking about how we wanted our shop/apartment to look when we started building on our property. I wasn't excited about the idea of drawing up a grid and cutting out little pictures of tables, stoves, chairs, and such (to scale), so I search around on the internet and found a free and easy to use floor planner that had all those things and much, much more. All I had to know was the dimensions of the apartment section of the shop, and off I went. I really got into it and spent about 4 hours playing around with layouts, where to have the bathroom and the stairs and all that. I finally came up with this for the downstairs of the apartment:</left><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRLZ-pRf7siVgMenUp4HM6E9CqzFBI-kyTSyldWbhAt4dfTA_7A-mPkryQvB51gnk0vgWyJ_r44kSiqJtesLRM9ZMuhazAic9WIxOVQVNEQpwGx84JRFs8fV8OBbK0lRyE5IlMUwdRRJc/s1600/Untitled.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRLZ-pRf7siVgMenUp4HM6E9CqzFBI-kyTSyldWbhAt4dfTA_7A-mPkryQvB51gnk0vgWyJ_r44kSiqJtesLRM9ZMuhazAic9WIxOVQVNEQpwGx84JRFs8fV8OBbK0lRyE5IlMUwdRRJc/s400/Untitled.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
Anthony requested there be a T.V. room, and I really wanted a sitting place that was no where near a television, so we worked everything else around that. The kitchen is super tiny with limited storage space, but if you look at that white space on the top left - that's the stairs going up from the back door. Underneath that is going to be all the pantry space I need. I could even forgo having a dishwasher to gain more cupboard space. No, seriously, I could. I've got more to say on the whole dishwasher subject at a later time.<br />
<br />
On a whim, I put in a cute little chair, standing lamp, and small round table next to the front door. I like the idea of having a little space to just sit, or read, or write, or whatever. Most of the foot traffic is going to be coming in through the back door because the bathroom/mud area is right there. We'll have some "locker" spaces against the wall to the bathroom to put all the shoes, coats, umbrellas, etc. that need to find a place when people come in.<br />
<br />
On the whole, I really like it. It's nice and cozy. I think we can be quite comfortable until the house is built. Then, we can use it as a guest house for when people want to stay a day or two. How fun :).<br />
<br />
I'll probably do some rearranging to the upstairs layout before I'm completely satisfied with it. But, here's what it looks like right now:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWjzMR3G2HUdgjyi6_oiUn-ub8aIVUi3LXOYKTsQcVBa4qy7Om7DeZRzbb0BphnyjK6i1ScIeV_3G8dPmJoQ1trPZQR9BqfLXnbG8kmisBU7CoVl7E48f-neR-kPfCMjon_0Uq_iS8GtY/s1600/Upstairs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWjzMR3G2HUdgjyi6_oiUn-ub8aIVUi3LXOYKTsQcVBa4qy7Om7DeZRzbb0BphnyjK6i1ScIeV_3G8dPmJoQ1trPZQR9BqfLXnbG8kmisBU7CoVl7E48f-neR-kPfCMjon_0Uq_iS8GtY/s400/Upstairs.jpg" width="268" /></a></div>
<br />
The stairs come up into what will be the "school room". There's a craft table in the middle for all of our project times and we each have a desk to work at. There's plenty of space for storage cabinets, white boards, bulletin boards, and the like. It should be great.<br />
<br />
If you're planning a room remodel, or are thinking about building a house, I would highly recommend using <a href="http://www.floorplanner.com/">www.floorplanner.com</a> to get your layout ideas down. <br />
The last few days has been quite wet around here. The girls haven't had a chance to get out and ride their 4-wheelers at all. We've been mostly hanging out around the house reading books and watching shows. One of Alexis's favorite books right now is the <i>Horse Diaries</i> Series.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOJ8SUKCUXHxT22vEywogK0IeySpdnyvG4vR06FD3DbwtOT9DBytM0BqHsiVNuuAkG3W32udzPsegalZSq-7BV8HwNPp1dKjWLLQovoUJoDGW27L-ytF27G_Z9QJ2wO8rh16kr5ZwMJyg/s1600/11885660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOJ8SUKCUXHxT22vEywogK0IeySpdnyvG4vR06FD3DbwtOT9DBytM0BqHsiVNuuAkG3W32udzPsegalZSq-7BV8HwNPp1dKjWLLQovoUJoDGW27L-ytF27G_Z9QJ2wO8rh16kr5ZwMJyg/s400/11885660.jpg" width="313" /></a></div>
<br />
We accidentally started with book eight because we had seen it at the library and didn't realize there was a huge series of them. Even so, it was a really good book. We've now started at the beginning and we're picking up book 2 at the library tomorrow. We've since found out that there is a Dog Diaries series as well, which I'm sure we'll be tackling next.<br />
<br />
As for Kaitlyn, she's been thrilled with her <i>BOB</i> books. We're working on set 1 right now. There are 18 books in this set.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAhwSum0lCxeDAtUr31Fpo_wDbq8Ic3nbV35uHQ6f-TKRvFngk7CBtNKlYq6nKTz4CbfwdBg7os31V-VuTxY_7FmQz-s5THcc8E5Lk9V9iArWDi0BN0JGOOOoFO_h-snAVjq0ZFfWs78Y/s1600/0439845009_xlg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAhwSum0lCxeDAtUr31Fpo_wDbq8Ic3nbV35uHQ6f-TKRvFngk7CBtNKlYq6nKTz4CbfwdBg7os31V-VuTxY_7FmQz-s5THcc8E5Lk9V9iArWDi0BN0JGOOOoFO_h-snAVjq0ZFfWs78Y/s400/0439845009_xlg.jpg" width="365" /></a></div>
These books are the BEST for getting the beginner reader going. Kaitlyn's been doing fantastic and the books crack her up. It's funny watching her read the words, look at the picture, and then understand what's going on, and then she laughs and laughs.<br />
<br />
As for me, I'm doing my annual read of <i>Stepping Heavenward</i>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_A463lTrjtchM81tzCC_E9jQZobK8dY2Nf-y5x4ycEDCqF1CwezHllFtI1tBzq0_zAu6172pzpgD-27KFqVDAcwv6_xV-dgErOLjCwSihMcgt6d7ANJ9sUEY5LRgNcqNFlHsL6cJ5vA/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_A463lTrjtchM81tzCC_E9jQZobK8dY2Nf-y5x4ycEDCqF1CwezHllFtI1tBzq0_zAu6172pzpgD-27KFqVDAcwv6_xV-dgErOLjCwSihMcgt6d7ANJ9sUEY5LRgNcqNFlHsL6cJ5vA/s400/images.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
I try to read this book once a year because it's so inspiring. There is so much that speaks to my heart and each time I bring away something new to help me become a better follower of Christ. One of my favorite quotes from her is this:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: georgia, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px;">You cannot prove to yourself that you love God by examining your feelings toward Him. They are indefinite and they fluctuate. But just as far as you obey Him, just so far, depend upon it; you love Him. It is not natural to us sinful, ungrateful beings to prefer His pleasure to our own or to follow His way instead of our own way, and nothing, nothing but love of Him can or does make us obedient to Him.</span></blockquote>
I highly encourage every woman to read it at least once. You won't be sorry.Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767003659738863778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508791223726174726.post-59036875837526652712013-05-19T17:49:00.000-07:002013-05-19T17:49:59.040-07:00Some Fun Pictures<center>

The above is a little collage of Katie at the ocean. She had so much fun there playing with Alexis and our dog Suzie. Even though it was a really windy day, she giggled and giggled while chasing the surf until she got too cold and then we raced back to where the truck was. She warmed up in the soft sand and played seals and sharks with Alexis. It was a great time.</div>

Our family decided to take a trip down to Richland, Oregon to visit hubby's twin and her family for a few days. The land is so beautiful and the weather is very mellow (cold, but mellow). I love this barn that's on their property. Katie ran right in there to check it out and having very sensitive skin, she rashed up a bit. Poor baby. But she's doing alright.<br />
<br />
They also have horses, chicks, and a chocolate lab.<br />

Please tell me I'm not the only one who just got Christmas all put away? Please. I have a terrible habit of leaving it up FOREVER. One year it was March before I actually got it all put away. I know, pathetic. Not sure what my hang-up is about it. But, this year, I did manage to do it while it was still January.<br />
<br />
This morning I realized that I no longer had a coaster to put my morning coffee on. I had been using the fabric Christmas ones that my mother had sewn up for me (which are awesome). But, alas, they were all packed safely away. However, I knew that the thing I needed to do to fix this dilemma was to drop everything (except the coffee) and grab my yarn and hook. I found a multi-colored cotton yarn in my stash and proceeded to whip out a small wagon wheel big enough for my cup to go on. I love the colors and my mug fit nicely on top of it. Dilemma solved! Now that I've got my emergency mug wheel, I can think about stitching up some variations. "ADD THAT TO THE TO-DO LIST!!!" Ha!<br />

So far, on this overcast Saturday morning, this and two loads of laundry is all I have accomplished. Oh, yes, and I also managed to get out of bed :). Now to think about the rest of the day. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">The family and I went to an amazing New Year's Day brunch at a good friend's house today. It was startling to realize that another year has passed and my oldest is now 8 years old - yikes!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">As with every new year, people keep asking me if I have made any New Year's Resolutions. To be honest I haven't and I'm probably not going to. I'm going to trust in God to refine the parts that need work and make sure I'm in His Word daily so that I'm open to His prompting. Not a resolution - just a willingness.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Tomorrow, we start back on our full schedule of schooling and regular activities. It will be nice to get back into the groove of things after having a whirlwind of a holiday season. They were enjoyable, but a bit exhausting. Now we can buckle down and focus on our studies and think of fun projects to add to the mix. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and continue to have a wonderful New Year!</span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzxUDn7obp75H8isX9fOJ0naF3yHtGrvNcfmaBSxOGsQ7JxdMRMMv9zn3NUWm4VrbB0KGPcfOme2pwyJgQyVlhCtkuJj6ku0z9poR4eK8h3iz5w1tKT92trWURyuV_XeRPNsLzfSlcNvM/s1600/Suzie's+Cut.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzxUDn7obp75H8isX9fOJ0naF3yHtGrvNcfmaBSxOGsQ7JxdMRMMv9zn3NUWm4VrbB0KGPcfOme2pwyJgQyVlhCtkuJj6ku0z9poR4eK8h3iz5w1tKT92trWURyuV_XeRPNsLzfSlcNvM/s400/Suzie's+Cut.jpg" width="400" /></a></center>
<br />
Suzie has been really lucky all summer with not getting attacked by the bears. She's been having a ball barking like crazy and chasing them off. Well, today she wasn't so lucky. This bear fought back and Suzie got a little too close. Now she has a gaping slash above her eye. This picture was taken after I cleaned it all up, put antibiotic ointment on it and super-glued it back together. It was pretty big before that. Poor thing. Too bad the nearest Vet is like 4 hours away. Hopefully I got it cleaned out good enough and her body's able to handle the rest.<br />
<br />
She was such a good patient. She didn't fuss or jerk away from me the whole time. She just looked at me with those big brown eyes and trusted me to take care of it. It was really sweet. She's resting at my feet now and getting lots of loves from the girls.<br />
<br />
I thought for sure I was going to have to send Alexis outside while I took care of the wound. She got pretty hysterical about the whole thing and was just sure Suzie was going to whine. She told me she couldn't listen if Suzie started to whine. She had worked herself up into an absolute frenzy before I had even started. I sent her to her bed and she covered her ears. I was finished with the whole thing before she even realized I had started. I wonder what those emotions are going to be like when she's a teenager. Yikes.Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767003659738863778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508791223726174726.post-39534376438135488692012-10-19T09:26:00.000-07:002012-10-19T09:26:27.012-07:00Bike Riding<center>

Kaitlyn says, "Take a picture of me for Grandma. She can see me on my bike." As if Grandma had never seen her on her bike before. Kids are so funny :)</div>
<br />
Yesterday was the first day in almost two weeks that is wasn't raining. We escaped our travel trailer and took a much-needed bike ride around Hyder. Besides the fact that it was really cold, and we ended up pulling our hands into our sleeves while we rode, it was a pleasant ride. We visited a few friends and stopped to take a picture of one of our favorite houses here in Hyder.<br />

<br />
We love the way this looks. How cute is that hen house? Don't mess with the rooster though. He's pretty scary looking.....no, seriously.<br />
<br />
We're all getting really excited at the thought of going home soon. Anthony's job is wrapping up here and should be done by the end of the month. And, I've officially caught the end-of-seasonitis. At least, that's what the guys here call it :). Hyder's gorgeous and the people are great, but I definitely miss home (and it's getting way too cold).Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767003659738863778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508791223726174726.post-23657974640032389882012-10-10T17:54:00.001-07:002012-10-23T10:15:16.862-07:00Our Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2012-2013<center>

<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This post may seem a little past due, but for us year-round homeschoolers, it's right on schedule. The way we do our schooling is we take each subject at the pace each of the girls needs. So, for Alexis, who HATES math, we go slower in that subject than we do in Bible, which she LOVES. Although, even at the slower pace, we're still ahead of where she would be if she were in traditional school. We're coming upon the time that we're starting to order new curriculum in the areas where she's finishing up her 2nd grade work. We'll be transitioning over the next 3 months. By the time January hits, we will be into her 3rd grade studies in all her subjects. Woot, woot! In traditional school, she would have just </span><i><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><u>started</u> </span></i><span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2nd grade last month.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Of course, Kailtyn not wanting to be outdone has done a great job on her preschool work and is now ready to start her Kindergarten material (a year early). Woot, woot! Katie!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So, without further ado......here are our curriculum choices for Kindergarten and 3rd grade:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span> <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We chose the <a href="http://www.explorerbiblestudy.org/Store_ProductDetail.aspx?pid=cc637I258041D6c71h64#" target="_blank">Explorer's Bible Study - Beginnings</a> because we loved the curriculum so much with Alexis. This one is great for little ones who can't read on their own yet. Rated for ages 2-5. It's so good that Alexis has asked me if she can read the lessons to Kaitlyn. She does a wonderful job playing teacher, and Kaitlyn gets most of the answers correct when it's Mommy's turn to see how well Alexis taught and Kaitlyn listened. It is great!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have two homeschooling friends who have used Teaching Textbooks for their children and they could not say enough good things about it. One of them had a student that was great at math and one that hated math - it worked very well for both of them. The one that hated math came to not hate it and did quite well. We're going to give it a try because the Horizons Math is complete drudgery for Alexis. She HATES it. Poor thing. I was also told that it is advisable to have the student do the placement test first because the program seems to be a year behind - so Alexis may place in the 4th grade math program instead of the 3rd. Hence- the two different pictures above :)</span></div>

<br />
Before we left Juneau in June, the girls and I stopped at Fred Meyer to stock up on some things that we thought would be nice for our "trip" to Hyder. One of those items was an envelope of flower seeds. For anyone who knows me, this might sound strange because I tend to have a black thumb. It's so bad that I even managed to kill our "wedding" fern that we were given at my bridal shower (you know, the kind that are supposed to symbolize your marriage - Ya, that one). It only took me 6 months and that thing was a crunchy corpse {ooops}. Needless to say, I don't have the best track record with being able to grow viable plants. Regardless, when you're standing in front of the "kazillion-gamillion" (Katie's words) packets of beautifully colored and artfully arranged flower seeds, it doesn't matter if you're the Grim Reaper of plants, you just have to get a packet (or 12) in hopes that maybe just one will SURVIVE your "efforts". So, that's exactly what we did. We bought a few packets of pretty, multicolored flowers to take with us.<br />
<br />
When we first arrived here in Hyder and set up our travel trailer, I found one of the packets (Yes, you read that right.....ONE...not sure what happened to the others). The girls were so excited about the flowers that we planted them right away. We put some seeds in a pot and scattered the rest on the outskirts of our gravel pad. And, as is typical for 4- and 7-year old little girls, they checked on the seeds' progress every 5 minutes or so for the first hour and complained loudly that they weren't EVER going to grow. As the days past they started forgetting all about them, then a few weeks ago Alexis came to me all sad and deflated. She said, "Mommy, come look. There is something wrong with the flowers." Truthfully, I had forgotten all about them as well (thank goodness for all the rain). When we walked over to the little pot, what we saw did NOT look like flowers at all. It looked more like weedy, tall grass. I thought, "Great! They filled the flower seed packets with weed seeds - figures I'd only be able to grow weeds." We decided to just let them grow anyway since it was the only thing green I'd managed to keep alive (thank goodness I had completely ignored the plant, otherwise I might have succeeded in killing it).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Three days ago we found that our "weeds" had sprouted flowers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
NO WAY!! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Isn't it beautiful? We were so proud of it {smile}.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Of course, not knowing anything about flowers beyond what a rose, daffodil, tulip, and daisy are, AND not having saved the packet, we have no idea what kind of flower this is, but we love it anyways. As for the seeds we had scattered, nothing ever popped up - surprise, surprise {sarcastically, with an eye roll}.</div>

<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">First off, I have to tell you that I am in no way an authority on preschool education. I am simply a homeschooling mother with a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Washington that strives to find an interesting/effective way to teach my preschooler the basic foundation of what she'll need to build her future education on. And, being a blogger as well, I get to share this journey of ours with you {smile}. Having one already in 2nd grade (homeschooling as well), I'm already aware of the things that DON'T work well. Been there, done that.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">I've found that introducing the letters in a specific order really helps my preschooler chunk the sounds together and read small words a lot easier than if we had just gone straight through the alphabet. </span><br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">We have already gone through the letters: <b>A</b>, <b>N</b>, <b>T</b>, and <b>E </b>(lesson plans for those to come soon). </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Today, I introduced the letter "<b>I</b>". So, if you're looking for an interesting and fun lesson plan for the letter "<b>I</b>" then keep reading:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Courier, monospace;"> Of course we start off each morning with this wonderful "Good Morning" song. Both girls love it.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Courier, monospace; font-size: 14pt;"><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><b>Devotion Time:</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><b><br />
</b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Segoe Print', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Today's devotion was on Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." We talked about how, if you had watched God create our world, you would not need sunglasses in the beginning because everything was dark. Then on the 1st day of creation, God separated the light from the dark and called the light, "day" and the dark, "night". You can have your little one close their eyes and then open them again to see how light and dark can be separated. Have them try to put into words what they see when their eyes are closed, and what they see when their eyes are open. If their attention span allows, you can then start talking about what God created on the other days. We got through day 3 before Katie was maxed out on her devotion time. Have your little one memorize Genesis 1:1 and review it every day for a week. You could even make a little poster of the verse to hang up if you have the space.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Segoe Print', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: 19px;"><b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Introduce Letter of the Day:</span></b></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">If you have a subscription to <a href="http://printables.scholastic.com/printables/home/" target="_blank">Scholastic Printables</a>, you can print out the letter "<b>I</b>" clipart on cardstock and laminate it for a nice visual. I used contact paper on ours because I do not have a laminator yet {sad face}. It works just as well though. If you do NOT have a subscription, I would highly recommend one if you are putting curricula together yourself (or supplementing).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <br />

<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Even though the letter "<b>I</b>" can make three different sounds, we just stuck with the short and long sounds for now. I will introduce the long "e" sound that it can make later when she gets more into blending and reading harder words.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span> <br />

<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Katie enjoyed these videos very much and requested that she be able to watch the Storybots video again (5 times, actually). </span></center>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b> Letter Formation/Recognition:</b></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></span></div>
</center>
</div>
</div>
<br />
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">We then headed into learning how to write the letter (both uppercase and lowercase) properly. If you have a membership with <a href="http://www.starfall.com/" target="_blank">Starfall </a>(which I highly recommend), you can print out letter "<b>I</b>" worksheets <a href="http://more.starfall.com/teachers-lounge/index.php?f&www=dnldTeacherLounge" target="_blank">here</a>. If you do not, then some other fun worksheets can be found <a href="http://www.kidslearningstation.com/alphabet/traceable-alphabet-letter-i.htm" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.schoolsparks.com/kindergarten-worksheets/category/alphabet-parade-letters-i" target="_blank">here</a>. Either way, it is VERY, VERY important that you make sure your preschooler understands the correct way of forming the letter. It will make writing a whole lot easier for them in the long run. Pay attention to how they're forming it and their tendency to either do it backwards or not.</span><span style="font-family: 'Segoe Print', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"> </span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Segoe Print', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span></center>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<center style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Segoe Print', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">"Where do you start your letters? AT THE TOP!" </span></center>
<center style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: 'Segoe Print', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">(from Handwriting without Tears). </span></center>
</blockquote>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">There are many sites online that offer additional worksheets, such as letter searches, matching, etc. to help familiarize the student with the letter and the sound. If your child doesn't mind sitting and doing those then it can be quite beneficial. However, most preschoolers aren't that interested in sitting down to a worksheet (or more than 1 worksheet anyways). Instead, have them search through magazines for the letter "<b>I</b>". Name some objects and ask them if they can hear the short or long sound of the letter "<b>I</b>" in it. You can make it an all-day activity of pointing out things that have the letter "<b>I</b>" (signs, movie titles, the ice cream container when you dish up a small snack {smile}). Your preschooler will more than likely find a gazillion, million I's on his/her own as well that he/she will shriek about and need to show you - so be prepared for the onslaught of I's.</span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></center>
<center style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><b>Letter I Craft:</b></span></center>
<center style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">And, of course, what would a day of preschooling be without some good crafty fun. An easy and fun letter "<b>I</b>" craft that we really enjoyed was the ice cream cone craft. </span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">

<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Doesn't it look "delicious"? My little one LOVES pom poms and any excuse to finger them, squeeze them, roll them, throw them, etc. is just fine with her. And, of course, tiny bead "sprinkles" are delightful as well. You'll want to make sure you do this on a cookie sheet (with a lip), or something similar, to keep all the bits and pieces in one area. How many scoops can you fit on your cone?</span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"><br />
</span></center>
<center style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Segoe Print, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Of course, these are just a few of the many options out there for exploring the letter "<b>I</b>". However, I found that it really kept Katie's attention and she had a great time with it. In fact, she asked if we could do letter "<b>I</b>" again tomorrow {smile}. So, just have fun with it and if something isn't working for your little one, don't push it. Just move on to the next thing....keep it light....keep it enjoyable. We want to instill a love of learning, not make it drudgery.</span></center>

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">It's <i>SORT OF</i> the first day of school for us here. We took a few weeks off for the nice weather here in Alaska and are now picking back up where we left off in our curriculum we started in June.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Do you like our homeschool logo? We love eagles and one of the biggest reasons we're homeschooling is due to our Christian faith.......hence the design for our logo. We love it and will be ordering hooded sweatshirts with the logo in the near future. GO TEAM TRAIL!! {smile}</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Our days are filled with 2nd grade fun and Preschool fun. The girls are doing really well in their work and have already made lots of progress. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Either tomorrow or Friday I will post about all the resources we are using for each grade.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">There is only so much to do around the Hyder, AK and Stewart, BC area. Consequently, we spend quite a few afternoons at the Municipal Playground in Stewart. They really enjoy it and it's also a really good spot for cute photos. Love it! My favorite pictures this week were all taken there.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Now we know why Suzie was growling early in the morning. We got another visit from our local wildlife. It was even sweet enough to decorate the truck for us.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Whenever we run Anthony some lunch, I usually just have the girls eat their lunch in the truck on our way. Makes it easier - two things at once, AND they usually stay relatively quiet since they're concentrating on their food. The trick is to get them to remember to grab all their garbage and leftovers when we get back to the trailer. Apparently, this is a skill that is extremely difficult to master......we've been working on it for months now {<span style="color: #6fa8dc;">smile</span>}.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />
</span> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1a8onIXreA3t9aSjkNytMoCaLDnBVUCCpqgKtB86jTZMw05bZlpZ2J8ZKZamQIvtoPGjoKUGn8yTdqkUflnxYr7kN101lq9uHk8HQzXjGxQkJOBHWAr9vqKuBgyk6zrl_rPnzB757XaA/s1600/IMG_3985.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1a8onIXreA3t9aSjkNytMoCaLDnBVUCCpqgKtB86jTZMw05bZlpZ2J8ZKZamQIvtoPGjoKUGn8yTdqkUflnxYr7kN101lq9uHk8HQzXjGxQkJOBHWAr9vqKuBgyk6zrl_rPnzB757XaA/s400/IMG_3985.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">I guess these "cuddly" creatures (actually, they're more like giant raccoons)just LOVE the smell of a nice peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Well, I can't blame them, they are pretty delicious. Poor thing wasn't able to get to it though. He decorated our truck with mud trying to get in, but to no avail. Dejected, he wandered off to see if he could find anything substantial at the dump.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">It is quite interesting to wake up to find your truck has been mauled yet again. However, beside very muddy, there was no damage - so we're thankful for that. Just another day in the Hyder life.</span>Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767003659738863778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508791223726174726.post-32985809985181103552012-08-23T21:26:00.000-07:002012-08-23T21:26:09.606-07:00Watercolor Interpretation of Hyder by Kaitlyn<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Do you remember the picture I posted of what we see outside our travel trailer window? If not, check out </span><a href="http://www.lazydayexpressions.blogspot.ca/2012/08/mud-fun-and-giveaway-reminder.html" style="font-size: x-large;" target="_blank">this post</a><span style="font-size: large;">.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Well, while the girls were visiting the Rogers (good friends of ours) in Stewart BC, Mrs. Rogers brought out some paints for the kids to use. Kaitlyn decided that she was going to paint what she saw from our trailer. I asked her about it and below is the answer that she gave.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitgpEcRMX7DEn9lNLt7vL_fPg5qhn30oPzJ7StL7Avb7kMBJeNWCcfShaacR4mdNFexthBTGvjCUD8fl-RS5DolHnwGhLfP5WPT5o-rTMJq7JyzATXwytYW0okvjQpA7Adc0HTCIr4-0M/s1600/Watercolor.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitgpEcRMX7DEn9lNLt7vL_fPg5qhn30oPzJ7StL7Avb7kMBJeNWCcfShaacR4mdNFexthBTGvjCUD8fl-RS5DolHnwGhLfP5WPT5o-rTMJq7JyzATXwytYW0okvjQpA7Adc0HTCIr4-0M/s400/Watercolor.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click on the image to get a better view</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">"This is God in the sky and Jesus in the sky and that's the Holy Spirit. And there is real grass. I feel good when I look at it. Mrs. Rogers helped me. The sky is blue. This is what I see from our trailer."</span></blockquote>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
</span> <span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I was blown away by it. How wonderful that what she sees when she looks out is God (in whatever form or way she sees that in her mind). It made me think......Do I look for God in the everyday? Would he show up in my watercolors if I were to paint something? The answer to both of these should be yes - but too often it is "no." Thank you Katie for showing Mommy the proper view.</span>Yvonnehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14767003659738863778noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2508791223726174726.post-54231082286727595802012-08-19T07:22:00.000-07:002012-08-19T07:22:54.416-07:00Looking For A Good DSLR Tutorial?<center>

This is the view we have from our travel trailer here in Hyder. And, as usual, the picture just doesn't quite do it justice. We've been here nine weeks now and I'm still taken back by the scenery. Everywhere you look it's just gorgeous. Of course you have to actually take time to look up from what you're doing to notice it though. I tend to forget that sometimes. But, this week I've been more purposeful in enjoying what's around me.</center>

<center style="text-align: left;">
We'll be finding out soon if we're destined to head to Petersburg, AK at the end of this month, or if we'll be enjoying Hyder for the rest of the construction season. The hubby is kind of hoping we can just stay here. It's always a hassle to get everything together and move to a different location, especially if that relocation means a ferry ride. Did I mention that the girls HATE ferries. Yes, well, more about that later.</center>

This was actually the cleanest part of the trip. I was going to post a picture of the aftermath but Alexis (the oldest) requested that I not put that one in. Something about being embarrassed :). I thought that didn't hit until age 11 or 12. Oh well. But, I'm sure you can get a pretty good idea of how little of their natural skin color was showing by the end. Especially since they pretended that they were seals for a good 20 minutes.</center>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am in complete awe of all the wonderful, fun, and crafty ideas that are circulating on the web right now for the Back-to-School season. What great fun! Personally, I have a hard time choosing between all my favorites and want to do every single one. Of course, being a homeschooler some are more practical than others, but sometimes it's tempting to make one of those cute items for a teacher and send it along with a friend's kid to school - seriously....I've got it that bad.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
