Justina Fenton: Co-Founder and Head Pastry Chef of Shortnin Bread

By Chris Livingston

I recently got a chance to sit down with Justina Fenton, one of the founders of Shortnin Bread Artisian Bakery and Creamery, for a discussion of where she and all of her baked and frozen goodies came from. It started with a great cup of coffee -- locally roasted by...

Cougar's Corner: Panvimarn Thai Cuisine

By Kathi Johnston

I have long been under the assumption that an empty restaurant is a bad restaurant, and unfortunately many restaurants that are hard to find, or hard to get to, sit empty. A place with no parking or down some dark alley is definitely not appealing right? If you are like...

American Craft Beer Week

By Al the Brewer

It is American Craft Beer Week, and if you didn’t know this, you should stop reading this for a moment so you can grab an American brewed craft beer. If you already knew this, enjoy the one in your hand.

FOLLOW-UP: King's Fish House

By Nikol ZumMallen

As Pine Street was going crazy for the Grand Prix, I tried to decide where to take my family for dinner after the race. I remembered that the manager at King’s Fish House reached out to me after my last experience and decided we should give them another chance.

I recently got a chance to sit down with Justina Fenton, one of the founders of Shortnin Bread Artisian Bakery and Creamery, for a discussion of where she and all of her baked and frozen goodies came from. It started with a great cup of coffee -- locally roasted by True Beans, all organic, and they aren't joking when on their cups they say "That unique flavor is called great coffee" -- at a table on the corner of 3rd and Elm St in downtown Long Beach.

If you are like me and you like to take a peek inside a place to see how crowded a restaurant is before you decide to dine there, you will be pleasantly surprised at my culinary find.

The Cougar's Corner: Boubouffe Mediterranean Grill

It was another Friday night on Second Street as this foodie took a stroll through Belmont Shore. With tons of people walking about, undoubtedly gearing up for summer as the weather is warming up, it was a beautiful night.

Old Faithful(s)

There are times that I love trying whatever is the most exotic, foreign or funky at the bar. Belgium Double IPA sure, why not? Lavender infused Saison, give me a glass! Hanbenero Tart?..... maybe a just a taster. But then there are times that I want to have something more familiar. Something that harkins back to the reason why I got into craft beer. In this episode of Al the Brewer, we look into some of my go-tos, the beers that remind me how good a beer can be.

Berlin: More than a Coffeehouse

This week has been super busy. With not much on the calendar today, I decided to grab the laptop and head out to some local spot to get caught up on work and grab some lunch. I was having a hard time deciding what I really wanted. The place need not be super crowded, have good food that was not just your average greasy spoon, and be easy to park and get to. Berlin fit all of these criterions so I jumped in the Benz and cruised on down 4th.

Thai Charcoal Pit

While I can on occasion be pleasantly surprised upon encountering a freshly remodeled or artfully decorated restaurant interior, let’s get one thing straight right now: I go out to eat to be wowed by the food, not the wallpaper. That being said, my most recent dining experience was right up my alley. A weeknight dinner at the Thai Charcoal Pit made for a great way to tune out all the distractions and just enjoy a delicious feast.

La Guera Tamalera: Fresh Tamales Delivered Straight to Your Home

I’ve recently changed to a vegan(ish) diet  and with being a busy wife and mother of two it has been challenging to find tasty substitutions for my favorite foods. When I heard that La Guera Tamalera (White Girl Tamale Maker) not only makes fresh vegan tamales but delivers them straight to your home I thought, por que diablo no?

Tavern on 2

On a Saturday morning, my husband and I wanted to sit on a patio, have a cocktail, and score a delicious breakfast. Naturally, the relatively new Tavern on 2 hit the spot. This was not my first visit to Tavern on 2 in Belmont Shore, but I had been waiting to go back because the first time was amazing. My husband, Ryan, had never been so he was pretty excited since I hadn’t stopped talking about this gastropub that is quickly becoming a Shore staple.

Tony's Breakfast Place

Driving though LB I find all kinds of little places that I want to try and for the last year or so I have wanted to stop and give Tony's a go. This particular morning I was running errands with my brother Brett before leaving for Catalina and my bachelor party, so we decided to find a place to dock the Benz and roll on in.

Island Dining at Steve's Steakhouse

While on a cruise with my husband Ryan last week, we had a one day stop in Catalina. Usually on past Catalina trips I feel seasick, so I don't really remember any of the food on this island. This time I felt better so I was very excited to try something new.

Adventures of a Foodie: Miles Grubs on Grubstake in SF

I don't know what it is about San Francisco, but it makes my head ring with thoughts of great food. Perhaps it's the constant cold weather, the large Chinese, Italian and Mexican populations, and the knowledge that one can always whet their palate with great clam chowder by visiting the tourist trap at Fisherman's Wharf. Whatever it is, I've caught the bug. Each time I'm in "the city" it is impossible for me to stay away from the wildly lauded hot spots that pop up on Yelp, Urban Spoon or even good "ol Facebook.
