Second Conditional Sentence

The Second Conditional

The second conditional uses the past simple after if, then 'would' and the infinitive:

if + past simple, ...would + infinitive

(We can use 'were' instead of 'was' with 'I' and 'he/she/it'. This is mostly done in formal writing).
It has two uses.
First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true. Maybe I'm imagining some dream for example.

If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won't win the lottery)
If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.
She would travel all over the world if she were rich.
She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never studies, so this won't happen)

Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it's not true. Is that clear? Have a look at the examples:

If I had his number, I would call him. (I don't have his number now, so it's impossible for me to call him).
If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

My name is Angelica Callysta Viera. People call me Viera. I was born in Semarang, 29th July 2003. So now I'm 15 years old. I study in 21 JHS grade 9. I will have the final examination soon. I live in Gaharu street no.31.

I never thought to be awarded as an outstanding student. So, I was shocked and very happy. Also, I will make my parents proud of me.

I love English since elementary school. I really enjoy English lesson in mu school. I always enlarge my vocabulary by reading English story, do some English task, and also speak in English with my friends in school. But the best place to maintain my English is LIA of course.

Hola everyone! My name is Fatih Husnaa Ersandra, y'all can call me Una or Husnaa. I'm 13 years old. Now I’m 8th grade. I was born in Semarang, December 5th 2004. I live in Gergaji 1 Street number 1C. Now, I study at Junior High School 2 Semarang.

I'm happy, little bit proud, but also confused when I was awarded as an outstanding student. Not only me, I guess. My parents also felt the same way like I did :D . This is the 4th times I have been awarded as an outstanding student. I'm very thankful for teachers, friends, and everyone who always support me until now. My First Paragliding Activity

Last Sunday, I took my boyfriend to accompany me paragliding at Denmark’s tiny beach. At the end of a broken road, my paragliding trainer started to help me wearing the harness, preparing the wing, and launching the parachute. I began to jump and felt the fresh wind which blew through my hair. My parachute moved as the wind blew to a certain direction. My feet felt the grass’ dry texture. I saw a clear bright blue sky on the horizon. The sea looked so blue and the smell of the sea could be smelled from such long height. I looked at some people waving at me, then I waved them back. I continued to focus on my paragliding activity. Sometimes, when I saw a traffic sign, I jumped onto it so I could fly even higher. After some minutes, I spent my time looking through the light house. I hopped when my left foot stepped on the light house’s roof. I was quite hypnotized by the landscape of the whole beach until I didn’t realize that the sky turned into purple-orange color. While enjoying myself rotating and spinning through the sky, I slowly glided my parachute down to the broken road. I carefully put my feet onto the ground, thus making my paragliding activity session ended. It was quite fun and I hope someday I could visit Denmark again.

A True Friendship

A true friendship is built on at least three factors. The first factor is respect. If we want to have true friendship, we need to respect our friends. So, they will start to be open to you. And then they will start to consider you as a good friend. The second factor is trust. We need to start trusting our friends. If you want to have a true friendship, you can start by sharing your feeling with your friends. That way, they will be comfortable with you because you think you trust them. And the last factor is honesty. We need to be honest to our friends. We can do it by sharing our secrets and to be honest to each other. That way, a true friendship will be built on respect, trust, and honesty and of course through time.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Breakfast cannot be skipped because it is the most important meal pf the day. Firstly, if you skip breakfast in the morning, you will be more tired than the usual students who don’t skip their breakfast. Secondly, your stomach will hurt if you suddenly stop eating breakfast for your daily eating routine. Thirdly, you are more likely to be hungrier than those who eat breakfast. In fact, if you are having activities for more than eight hours, especially students you will consume higher value of carbohydrate, fat and protein needs. You have to fulfill your nutrition needs in order to do activities effectively. In short, you will need to maintain your breakfast routine for your health.

Lia English Competition 2017

To celebrate 58^th anniversary of LIA, all branches and affiliates held some competitions. The competitions were: Show and Tell for English for Children class, Story Telling for English for Teens class, and Pecha Kucha presentation for English for Adults class and Conversation Class.

In Lia Semarang Candi, the competition was held on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Starting at 13.00, all participants from all extensions gathered in Veteran Kavling 1, Semarang. Some of them were accompanied by their parents, relatives, and friends. Not only the participants who were ready, the judges were ready in their posts. Show and Tell was held in front of Lia, the café to be, Story Telling was located in administration lobby, and Pecha Kucha competition took place in Room 302.

Before the competition, Pak Bambang Sulistyo, as the head of affiliate, opened by giving opening speech. He motivated all the participants to do their best in the competition. The first winners of all competition categories will represent the affiliate for National competition that will be held in December 2017.

The competition ended at about 14.00. The judges announced the winners. Happy faces met some disappointing faces after the announcement. Yet, they have another chance to join in the next competition.

What I like best from the book:

I like it when there is a new student named Zerelda Brass and she like make up like lipstick, eyeliner, and others.

My opinion and feelings about the book:

I love the book but the book always makes me carried away with the story.

Recommendation:

The minus is the book is expensive, but the plus is it’s easy to read.

Author: Shane Peacock
Type of story: detective
Summary:
This book is about a boy, who likes mystery. He gets a big problem which constraints to homicide. And then, he should solve the problem with many dangerous situations.

What I like best about the book is when the boy elaborates the way to solve the problems because it’s very unpredictable.

My opinions and feelings about the book:
I think the book is awesome, the plot is very exciting and the character has strong personalities so I don’t feel bored when reading the book. I really enjoy it.
Recommendation:
I recommend this book to anybody who loves detective stories.

Morale of the story:

My sister was a skilled young gymnast. Too bad that her injury when she was twelve years old made her unable to do gymnastics anymore. I still remember how bad her injury was. When she fell from the gymnastic pole, she screamed so hard that everyone had to look at what happened. Bad choice. It was such a frightening sight that some people always vomited at the sight of it. Apparently, she landed on her arms when she fell and she fractured both of her arms. She was then taken to the hospital while in unconscious. Unfortunately, the road to the hospital was still under construction because of last week's earthquake. They had to take another route that was 5 km farther. Because it's the only route left to go downtown, my sister ambulance was trapped in a traffic jam. One and a half hour later, they arrived in the hospital and my sister was immediately taken to surgery room. The doctors were able to save sister's live, but her hands were already dead and had to be amputated. My sister was really depressed after that. But fortunately, she was able to adapt and cope with her disability. She already had more than enough knowledge about gymnastic before the accident happened and she decided to share her knowledge by publishing a book called "Gymnastic for Amateurs". She also became a motivational speaker in a famous university in my city.

Eating at a seafood restaurant near my house was quite an experience. I went to the restaurant two weeks ago along with my cousin. It was her treat, so she let me choose the menu to my heart content.

To be honest, I was kind of afraid to choose a new menu from a restaurant I've never been to. Bu since my cousin was gonna pay the food, I chose the menu which was not really expensive, but looked unique. I chose seafood sukiyaki with samgaetang (Korean dish) soup.

When the food was served, both of us were surprised. There were squids, octopus, shrimps, fish cakes, oysters, sea squirt and abalone. But the big octopus in the middle of the pot was still alive. The others were still fresh. Were wondering how to eat them.

Right after that, a waitress came with a table stove and a big bowl full of soup. She turned on the stove, put the bowl above it and put all the ingredients inside. As soon as the soup boiled, the octopus died. We cut its tentacles using scissors. This perhaps sounds cruel, but this is how Korean people eat seafood suki.

ECO GREEN JOURNEY AT KARIMUNJAWA

Karimunjawa Island is an island which has ecological function as a mangrove conservation area. First, total of 300 ha of mangrove forest covers the national park. It has more than 30 species of mangrove. Not only mangrove forest, it also provides habitat to some endemic species including the mythical Dewandaru tree, Setigi, and Kalimasada. So, Karimunjawa has declared as one of the priority areas for the marine conservations biodiversity in Southeast Asia. Second, local people have unique treatment methods. They generally believe that the wood of the endemic dewandaru tree has a legendary power of curing diseases or snake bite wound, protecting houses from thieves, or prolonging life. Visitors may seem herbal treatment from the local people. Third, tourists will be served a beautiful journey in Karimunjawa mangrove forest. In fact, the tourists are allowed to participate reforestation mangrove areas. Moreover, along the thick mangrove forest, thery will be able to take a rest at a beautiful beach. But, tourists are forbidden to visit two zones which are places to do some researches. There are sanctuary zones and wilderness zone. In summary, Karimunjawa is not just a beach. It has a beautiful mangrove forest which is interesting to explore..

Religion Makes Children Less Altruistic

According to a new study, religious people are less altruistic and meaner than secular people. The man’s reason for this theory is that secular people are more likely to be concerned about what other people are thinking of them. This happens because of the in-group out-group mentality. Secular people often think that because they’re not in particular religion, other people will judge them harshly because they belong in their group (religion). His other reason stated that secular children were taught to do things for the sake of doing it. Meanwhile, children that were in a religious family were taught to do good things because if they don’t, they will be tortured forever after they die. Secular children were taught to do good deeds because it is correct, because religious people were threatened to do good deeds.

In my opinion, that is true. Religious people tend to be meaner towards people who have different beliefs from them. Take an example from Indonesians. Indonesians are really strict with beliefs. They often can’t accept something that is against their belief. Take a homosexual matter as an example. Most religions are against the same sex sexual orientation. Most Indonesians are religious and they mostly don’t want to open their mind to that matter. Why? Wouldn’t it be just easier if they just support the gay rights? It’s not like they’ll turn to gay, too if they support gay rights. That’s why I agree with the man’s opinion. I think it is because religious people are too strict with their beliefs.

Would the world be a better place without technology?

Some people think that the development of technology has bad effects on society. In their point of view, the fast technology development may lead to the destruction of the society. If that happens, the whole society structure and norms will be broken and a new era will rise among the people.

I am strongly against it. In my opinion, technology is good for humanity because of many reasons. The faster development, the better. Technology development will create a better version of the previous invention in order to help humanity to survive. Technologies were meant to be made so that human will work more efficiently with the help of technology.

The first reason on why the world wouldn’t be a better place without technology is because people have already been strongly attached to it. You can’t just suddenly erase technology from the world. If you do that the humanity’s chance on survival will greatly decrease because most people nowadays can’t do anything without the help of technology. They were born with technologies around them twenty-four hours a day. You still can’t erase technology from the world although you do it slowly because the people will protest and there will be riots everywhere. That will happen because having technologies is one of people’s rights and they will fight for it. They will fight for what they think is justice for them, and that is done by getting their right back.

Humans are social beings and they need to interact with each other to sustain their happiness and sanity in order to survive. Technology is one of so many ways for people to connect with other people. In fact, it is the most used way to interact with other people anywhere on this earth where we live in. If technology is gone, it will take some time just to ask other persons how they’re doing.

The last reason is without technology, activities and work will get harder because there’s no technology to help lighten the works. Works like producing something in massive numbers will be very hard with just using human’s power.

In short, I think, the world wouldn’t be a better place without technology because technology helps humanity survive and connect with each other.

Mandy doesn’t look back though she feels that someone is following her in the dark alley. She hears voice behind her. She tries to look back but she’s afraid. She decides to call 14022 to ask some help. But nobody answers. Then, she looks at the signal in her smartphone. It turns out that there’s no signal. After that she decides to slither slowly and tries to hide behind a garbage bin. Because it not fit for her, she decides to hide in a cupboard. When she walks towards the cupboard, the TV above her suddenly is turned on by itself. There is a CherryBell advertisement on TV. She tries to follow Cherrybell’s dance in order to lose her fear. But then suddenly, the TV is turned off by itself. This time, lamp is off, too. She’s terrified when she hears a girl’s laughing behind her. She grabs anything near her and finds a candle. Before she has a chance to light it up, something or someone touches her shoulder. Standing like a statue, she turns her head around. Her jaw drops seeing what’s in front her….

Someone in The Dark

Mandy doesn’t look back though she feels that someone is following her in the dark alley. She holds a flashlight while she is walking. She feels really scared especially when she hears a creaking sound from the door behind her. She remembers what the rumors said about this place. She turns around to check what sound it is but she doesn’t find anything. Hurriedly, she arrives home safely. But then she realizes that she is home alone. Suddenly she hears a knocking at her door. She is shocked but her mind is full of questions, curious about what or who behind the door. With her little gut, he tries to get closer to the door. Slowly, she opens the door, but there is no one standing there. Then she closes the door. She decides to go into her bedroom. Her heart almost skips when her phone is ringing. She picks up the phone and tries to listen to the caller. But she only hears the sound of creaking door. She starts to have goosebumps. Suddenly she feels someone touching her shoulder. When trying to turn around, she couldn’t see anything. The next thing she knows; she finds herself in a hospital…

Hammer Man

Mandy doesn’t look back though she feels that someone is following her in the dark alley. “Tok…tok…tok…” Mandy hears the sound similar to the sound of a hammer. She starts to get scared as she remembers that it is already midnight. It seems impossible someone renovates a house in the midnight. Moreover, she walks all by herself. Finally, she encourages herself to look back and checks what is going on. But, when she turns around, the sound stops suddenly. Her eyes squint all over places. They catch a glimpse of someone carrying a hammer. His face is full of blood. She screams with all her might and runs as fast as she can. The man’s steps stomp behind her as he follows her. Mandy doesn’t stop running. She sees light at the end of the alley. She runs into it, hoping there will be someone who can help. When she gets there, she stops for a while to control her breath. She looks back and finds that the man has disappeared. There is relief in her heart, but then she hears swooshing sound right behind her….

Don’t make you suffer by yourself

Someday, someone lives in a hut in the middle of the forest named Arc. Arc likes hunting to feed himself and swim above the waterfall. But, it will not happen … again. Witch from Black Kingdom came to the forest and make it die. Now the forest is black and there is no life signal. Just Arc.

Then The Witch curses the forest and makes the people (before cursed) to be her followers. The mushroom become big and evil, and many, many evil in there. Arc who just one and only live in there, doesn’t know how to flee from the curse, and how to make it ‘life’ again. Arc thinks he will relive it with one solution: kill the witch.

Before he kills the witch, Arc hunts birds, wolves, and mushrooms that are not cursed. In one month, Arc can build a Kingdom. His followers are truants (?) (from tree that gives potion) with living sword. Arc plans that day to revenge the forest.

But the witch just intrudes the Arc kingdom. Arc and his army cannot refuse to defend his Kingdom.

“But they have many armies before us!”

“Don’t worry, we will win this battle”

“VICTORY IS OURS!”

Because of the support from Arc. The Treants army have spirited fight to win the battle. In a year, the battle is not over yet. The two sides, The Witch Army and Arc Army run out of the food and they all become angry and become cannibal. There are two people left after the Cannibalism Arc and The Witch.

“F*CK you ugly WITCH!”

“And then …?”

“I will kill you now!”

It’s a very intense fight between Arc and The Witch.

“I will put you to this Magic Ball!”

“But … NO!!”

And then Arc put into Magic Ball.

“At last I win!! Hahahahah …!”

The Witch feels so happy and she laughs very loudly. Time by time the laugh of The Witch makes her suffer and die.

‘We don’t want you to be that kind of boy, Louis.’ Mother says. ’But why, Mom?’ Louis asks. Mother doesn’t answer. ‘You prohibit me to reach my goals but you don’t tell me the reason. That’s just so rude, Mom.’ Louis says. ‘Sadly, I’m not rude, Louis. You just don’t understand.’ Mother says. ‘Tell me then.’ Louis shouts. She looks surprised of the way he says and then she starts to cry. He regrets what he does to his mom and then leaves the room.

While Louis is walking to his bedroom, he stops in front of his parents’ bedroom’s door which is open. He enters the bedroom. He sees old newspaper on the bed. He’s curious about it. So, he reads it and he gets shocked for what he sees. He reads that “A 17-year-old boy was killed while he was throwing a Rock n Roll concert.’

‘What are you doing, Louis?’ mother asks shockingly. ‘I – I – I’m so sorry, Mom, I mustn’t yell at you.’ Louis says guiltily. ‘It’s okay, sweetheart. I mustn’t prohibit you too. You can reach your goals, I will support you, love.’ Mother says happily. ‘Really?’ he says surprisingly. ‘Definitely, yes. ’Father says happily. Many years later, Louis and his band becomes the most famous band in the world.

SISTERS’ DISPUTE (short story)

Hi! My name is Kiko Namikaze. Just call me Kiko. My parents were divorced. I live in New York with Hana, my sister who studies in high school. We live in New York , just two of us. My father lives in Africa, as a photographer. And my mother lives in London with her new husband. I'm very busy with my job as a fashion designer. And I don’t have good relationship with my sister.

"Why do you always protect me too much? You must remember if I ain't a baby anymore." Hana asks me.

"And if I make you confused, why don't you let me live with father or mother? Why I must live with you if you always get angry and ignore me when I ask something like this?" And Hana starts crying.

I haven't got an idea how to explain all to Hana. Because if I tell her, she will get shocked. My parents want to give me a little brother. But when my mom gave birth, it's a baby girl. Actually, my father wants a son in order to lead his photography company one day soon. Without sense, my father got disappointed and divorced my mother. My father thought that my mother can't give birth a baby boy. So does my mother. I was 10 years old at that time and I knew what happened at that time.

With my bravery, I took little Hana to my grandparent's house. I explained everything happened to them. And my grandparent let us live in their house. My parents got divorced and they moved to another country without thinking about us. Actually they sent money every month, but it doesn't make me forgive them. Hana didn't know what happened until now.

After my grandparent passed away, I decided to move to New York. It's a place where I can find more money for Hana and me. I took Hana also. Everything went smoothly until Hana has an idea to ask me question like that.

In my birthday, my aunt calls me but Hana answers it because I am in the toilet. Our voice is quite similar, so aunty thought it's me.

"Happy birthday, Kiko!! Did Hana know what happened 10 years ago?" Aunty asks.

"Sorry, what happened? Tell me please." Hana responds, impersonating me..

Unfortunately, aunty tells everything without thinking about it first. Hana starts crying. When I open the bathroom's door, I see Hana crying loudly. I ask Hana and Hana says that she is an unwanted child. I explain to Hana. Many time I explained it, but Hana didn't want to hear me.

Hana runs outside and takes her bicycle. I think that Hana wants to go to the airport. In the airport, we meet aunty. I call aunty on my way to the airport angrily. Aunty feels regretful. Unfortunately, she get heart attack. And she passed away in the airport. Knowing about what happened to aunty, Hana is shocked. And she finally Hana forgives us for not considering about our feeling and hiding the thing she should have known ten years ago.

Day by day, my relationship with Hana is better than before. We can be good sisters again. But, my parents still do not visit us. My life is so dramatic. But I will make my problem to be my learning object.

Teaching months of the year to EC classes

The topic of teaching calendar or months of the year to EC classes is not that difficult. However, the problem is to provide various activities to the students that won’t make them bored, and more importantly, make them sit still :D . the book itself has provided various activities, including reading about what people from different countries celebrate their independence day, or have their holidays. Since the topic of months related to people from countries is relatively new to students, so I don’t really expose them with it. I drilled whatever provided by the book. Instead, I gave them more local topics related to celebrations such as Kartini Day, Indonesia Independence Day, Hero Day, Education Day, etc. Another problem came up was to review the months of the year. Therefore, I tried to browse searching for available printed copy. And look what I’ve got. Thanks to Google and people who uploaded them :D

A Beautiful Sunset in Bali

Enjoying sunset on a beach is one of the most beautiful things you can do. It was in Bali in 2012. I had a vacation with my family. We stayed there for about 5 days. On the first day, we just arrived there so we didn’t walk around much. We were at the hotel, preparing for vacation tomorrow. We went to Tanjung Benoa island on the next day. It was a full day playing time. On the evening, we sat down on the sand of Kuta beach. We enjoyed sunset at that time. At night, we walked around along the seaside, the wind was so strong and we liked the situation of the beach. On the third day, we went to Uluwatu enjoying Kecak dance and after that we went to Goa (actually I forgot the name). It is a place used by people for worshipping. Then we came to the hotel and we enjoyed sunset again. The last day before checking out the hotel, we went to the shopping center like Joger then we had meal at a restaurant that was very famous and on the evening we were enjoying sunset for the last time. The next morning, we had to be at the airport. I think, it is always amazing to see sunset in Bali.

Meteor Shower? (A brain teaser story)

Matt and Velice were having a conversation in the class.
"How long did it happen? " Velice asked Matt.
"It is just a while, i think," he answered.
"Aaahhh... that's a waste! I should have watched it, too," sighed Velice.
Suddenly, Rina showed up.
"Here, hey, Rina! Come here, just join us," Velice asked her to join.
Rina joined them, and seconds after that, Matt continued to tell them about what he was telling them, the Meteor Shower.
"Did you watch the meteor shower last night? "
Rina had not answered yet, but Matt interrupted her.
"I watched it, you know, with my new telescope on the balcony at 9.00 PM in Jakarta, the same time as the astronomers did in Hawaii. Isn't that cool?"
"Fantastic! " exclaimed Velice, full of admiration.
Matt and Velice went on and on with meteor shower thing, while Rina observed Matt's story.
"Wait!" Both Matt and Velice looked at Rina with a questioning glance. "When did Meteor shower happen in Hawaii?"
Matt rolled his eyes, "I told you, it happened at 9.00 PM".
"And you said that you watched it in Jakarta at 9.00 PM, too?"
"Awww.... seriously, Rina," sighed Matt. "Yes!"
Rina held her chin high towards Matt, and said, "Do you know that Jakarta's local time is 5 hours ahead off Hawaii's local time?"
Rina continued talking sarcastically, "So, it's impossible if you watched it in the same time in Hawaii"
Matt was speechless....

Raib is a normal 15-year-old-girl. She has a funny dad, a kind-hearted mother, and also 2 cats. She is only a usual 10th grader with not too many friends. But she has a secret that she had been keeping since she was a little. She has an ability to disappear only by covering her face with both of her hands. One day, she gets lost in a place that she is unfamiliar with together with her friends, Seli and Ali. Want to know about her adventure in that place? Find out on Bumi by Tere Liye.

This book is really page turning and has a lot of fantasy. For you who like adventurous books, this novel is highly recommended. I think this book has similar genre as Narnia and Harry Potter. So, if you are into that kind of genre, you have to read this.
