I ordered this monitor with the intention of gaming and watching
movies. First of, there is no hdmi with that said that didn't stop me
from buying this since i can easily slap an adapter to the dvi port.
When first opened, it is easily put together by a simple slide in and
done now ready to turn on it has an annoying auto image adjust that
stays there ever time you change resolution but don't worry you can
take it off. It shows rather nicely the speakers are not that
impressive but its not like they were going to be. It definitely keeps
up when playing games like left4dead and gta IV. Watching movies on
this monitor in 1080p is nice colors vivid and deep blacks..

There are only small itches that needed to be scratched, first off
when you turn off auto image adjust when using it on the ps3 it tends
to go black and you have to turn off the monitor and on so it can show
again not sure how to fix it or if it can be fixed its more of a
nuisance then a problem to me (tip, when watching blu ray on ps3 this
monitor tends to show purple all around if you have your mode in cmyk
or something like that and switch it to rgb). The other itch is it
lacks HDMI and a some what viewing limited.

All in all this monitor is worth the money with its limited ports
and small quirks would definitely recommend this monitor towards
someone who is looking for one that's cheap and gets the job done.

This wall mount is doing a great job. I shopped many stores for a 22in wall mount under $40. Has excellent tilt and panning features and I can see it from any spot in my office.
Ordered this TV for my mom on the Monday before Christmas and got it on Wednesday two days later. That was with the free shipping option. I have had this same TV in my kitchen for several months now and love the picture. We also use it in our Travel Trailer when we go camping. The picture is so clear and the sound works great in both environments. Can't go wrong with this TV!

Best TV I've Ever Owned, February 5, 2010

By Craig (New York)
I've had my Samsung PN58B550 for a week now and so far, so good. I must say there is a big difference between it and the 42 inch Philips model it replaced in size and picture quality, making it worth evey penny I paid (though I wish Amazon hadn't ended its price protection guarantee program and dropped the price $115 days after I bought it). The picture and colors are flawless. For those who do not like the red Touch of Color border on some other Samsung models, it's grey on this one and you can't really see it anyway. This baby is big and beautiful. It weights 100 lbs., so don't even think of moving it without two people. If anyone wants advice on the best picture adjustments for this unit, head over to CNET's review of the similar PN58B650.

I went plasma over LCD because LCD still hasn't caught up to plasma in overall picture quality including black levels, color depth, lack of motion blur, and available viewing angles. The main knock against plasma technology was risk of Burn-in, but that was a first generation plasma problem. It is a thing of the past for modern plasmas and image retention is temporary if it ever happens at all. Samsung includes pixel shift technology to eliminate that issue too.

A common complaint I've heard about some Samsung TVs is a loud buzzing noise. I'm happy to report that my Samsung makes no noise whatsoever. Either that problem was only in early runs of Samsung's latest models and has subsequently been fixed, or some people have dog hearing. Lastly, as always you can't go wrong buying from Amazon. If you can find anyone who has it cheaper, then buy it from them. But you won't.
The PN58B is my first entry into large scale HDTV. Very impressive to say the least. They say football and television were made for each other, but HD is like a fine marinara sauce over pasta...just enhances the end product greatly. Can't wait to watch Tom Brady in the Superbowl next week! :-)
Great HDTV, February 1, 2010

By Thomas E. Bennett (Cold Spring, Ky. United States)
I bought the Samsung PN58B550 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV from Best Buy about 3 months ago. I would have bought it from Amazon but Best Buy was offering free delivery and recycling of my old TV. Since my old TV was a huge rear projection set the free recycling was the clincher for me. However, I would not have bought the Samsung without the reviews I found on Amazon and elsewhere.

I was especially concerned about those who had experienced buzzing noises or other problems. Therefore, I listened carefully for buzzing on the display model. It had no buzzing and, I am happy to say, the Samsung I received has no buzzing either. I have had no problems with my set at all other than having to adjust the picture to suit my viewing preferences. Out of the box I found the colors to be over saturated. However, adjustments were very easy to make without having to consult the manual as I found the remote and TV menu interface to be very intuitive. Adjusting a TV set's picture is something I naturally expect as the factory normally has the color and brightness and contrast turned too high so the set will look good on the display floor.

Some of the reviews I read also knocked the sound of the Samsung. I have found the sound to be quite adequate. You don't get true surround sound, of course, nor deep bass, but that should not be expected of this set or any HDTV. When I want surround sound and/or deep bass, I use my A/V receiver and speakers.

The set's picture is very nice with good detail and blacks are very good. You can get deeper blacks with other sets but it will cost you a few thousand more. I doubt that you can find a better HDTV for the price of the Samsung. I know I could not.

The only caution for those considering buying this set, or any plasma set for that matter, is that it is very reflective. Plan on watching in a dim or dark room as a result.

Good value but you can hear the buzz when it is quiet, January 31, 2010

By Robert Schussel (vallejo, ca United States)
For the money about $1,600 (at the time I posted this) the 58in PN58550 is a very good value.

Please note that I am comparing this set to my series 9 55 inch Samsung with local LED dimming--one of the best sets made.

Some Cons

1) This set will clobber most AM radios in your home due to radio frequency interference from the ionized plasma.

2) The buzzing from this set can be heard when the room is quiet . If you are a perfectionistic do not buy it. I don't think the average person will care.

3) The picture is not as good as the best sets that cost twice as much. However it is still very good.

4) This set is 3in deeps while the newer ones are thinner--however thinner sets tend to have poorer sound if you use the built in speakers..

5) Lacks some of the internet connectivity of some newer sets.

Pros

1) No LCD set of the same size has as good a picture in this price range--$1,600 as of this review.

2) This set has most of the same adjustments available as Samsungs best sets--but the picture is not quite as sharp nor are the colors as subtle.

3) At this price point this is one of the best values.

4) Has a base that can swivel

5) Esthetically it is a nice looking set.

6) Has enough HDMI ports (4) to satisfiy most people.

58B550 a winner!, January 22, 2010

By R. Garrett "Adventure Rider" (New Mexico, USA)
It's easy to get bogged down in specs when it comes to TVs but the proof is in the viewing, and specs don't say it all. As an engineer I do a lot of research before purchasing electronics and ended up with this TV because of reviewer comments from multiple sources and reading the spec sheets. The Samsung PN58B550 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV is an all-around solid buy that won't disappoint you when you weigh price against picture quality and reliability. Bells and whistles such as Internet TV are good for the marketing department but often go unused or unrealized because of the total system overhead in terms of learning to use it, computer system interface requirements and the performance uncertainties due to a lack of enough industry standards to ensure compatibility across component brands. Also, not every home can provide the bandwidth necessary to get a high quality video and audio presentation, which is my case. So, I chose this particular TV because I'm not willing to iron out all of the wrinkles associated with higher end TVs that, although providing slightly better picture quality and more features, are not what I want now (maybe later when my ISP upgrades the bandwidth and I have more time to deal with configuring the system). The 58B550 picture is beautiful in my dimly lit theater and there is a reasonable expectation that it will work well when I upgrade my wireless Internet to 80211n spec although I haven't checked the blogs yet for other peoples' experiences. The plasma image is smooth during fast pans, unlike some LCD screens in this price and size range, and shows accurate color with nice shadow details and contrast. I bought a 40 inch Samsung LCD set for my family room which is brightly lit, and am satisfied with it for daily general viewing in that environment. I use a good quality audio system when viewing all but snapshot news broadcasts or other quick features, mainly because I want the low end frequency response and volume not provided by the built-in TV speakers, which is typical. Two people are required to lift it for mounting on the wall, and probably for about anything except for removing it from the box. BTW, when the freight company delivered the TV, the driver brought it in and tested the set for operation before asking me to sign the receipt, which is top notch service from a freight carrier. My experience with Amazon.com has been very positive.
Best TV period, January 17, 2010

By Mutual Information
Having made an extensive review of HDTV's including LEDs, I would say that overall the XBR9 series is the best. I read a ton of online reviews and went to the stores to compare first hand. The LEDs from Samsung and Sony are pretty good with very wide dynamic range. But the dynamic range was too high and at times the picture became difficult to watch. The blacks dominated most of the picture. Sure you can adjust this down but why pay the additional cost of LEDs when you have to adjust the contrast back to non-LED type levels? The 100,000:1 contrast on this set seemed perfect to my eyes. And the 240 Hz was smoothest of the hundreds of sets I compared. A comparison that was easy to make since the store ran a continuous demo. I'm not sure that live ATSC and cable transmissions would benefit from 240Hz since, they are compressed video and any motion shift accompanies pixelation and lossy information. Interpolation works best when the sample points are precise and lossless. So if you don't plan to do Bluray, maybe 120Hz is plenty. The picture quality is fantastic. Primetime and daytime NBC and CBS 1080i broadcasts are amazing to watch. The color variation is so accurately reproduced that it seems you are watching a moving painting instead of a picture. Leno Show, especially during Xmas, was amazingly vivid in color and detailed that I really didn't care about the content but was simply viewing the show as a spectacle or a museum piece.

If you do buy any Bravia TVs, I would advise to buy a Bravia theatre and bluray system since the Bravia Sync is great (though you may need to switch the little speakers for larger ones). Just put the disk in and the rest of the system turns on and switches over automatically. Saves at least 5 buttom pushes and the search for 2 remotes. You will love the system.
After months of research, happy at last!, January 11, 2010

By tasty donuts (Jersey City, NJ)
PROS: terrific picture, surprisingly good sound, sleek design, effective anti-glare coating, nifty PS3 integration

CONS: compromised off-angle color, no swivel stand, so-so internet functionality, no Wi-Fi

BACKGROUND: For months, I had been researching 40-46" flat panels to upgrade a 32" Panasonic LCD in the living room (now in the bedroom). Prior to that, I had a 34" Sony WEGA XBR beast (200 lbs) from my bachelorhood days that had to go due to space constraints in our apartment. The Panasonic was purchased in mid-'08 ($580) as a stop-gap until the higher-end LCD's came down in price. But then, our friends got us a PlayStation 3 and Blu-Ray discs for our birthdays, which meant that my wife could enjoy her favorite romantic comedies in full 1080p HD glory, and I could pick up video games again (specifically Call of Duty: MW2)... all of which meant moving up our new-TV timeline!

I decided to look at Sony models first, as I had helped a family member pick out a Sony 40W4100 earlier and it turned out to be an excellent TV. I compared them against the Samsung 6-series and 7-series LCD's as well as the Panasonic 42G10 plasma. Though plasma is still superior to LCD in many respects, the lack of flicker-free 24p support on the 42" Panasonics was a deal breaker. LED backlight technology was tempting, but the cost is still prohibitive and the edge-lit models have their issues. I also admit to having some brand bias - I have not had good first or second-hand experiences with Samsung products. Don't get me wrong, in many ways their TVs are comparable or even superior to Sony's, but I still see too many reports of random bugs and reliability issues for my tastes. Besides, I've always felt Samsung pictures to look "boosted" and a little fake in the showroom, and my attempts to calibrate them (admittedly by eye) were never that fruitful.

I found the Sony Z and XBR9 series to provide the balance of performance, features, and aesthetics I was looking for. (I considered the W5100, but wanted the newest Bravia Engine 3 which purportedly has improved processing.) The biggest obstacle was price - with so many 40" options under $1k, it was difficult to justify the premium. But I waited and found a terrific package deal on the 40XBR9 just before X-mas, netting me an unbelievable price on the set - cheaper than the Z or even W models!

PICTURE QUALITY: As expected from a top-of-the-line Sony, the picture quality is excellent, with rich but realistic color, smooth motion and reasonably dark blacks. If you turn off the fake dynamic contrast as you should, the blacks aren't quite to plasma or LED-backlit standards, but it's still very good (at least 10x better than our Panasonic); only when watching off-angle or in a completely darkened room do I notice the blacks being on the bright side, and when properly adjusted there's little or no "black crush," where anything dark in a scene automatically becomes black. (Samsungs are often adjusted to have black crush to look more contrasty in the showroom - don't fall for it, it's a trick!)

There have been complaints of clouding and sparkle artifacts with Sony LCDs, but I see absolutely no sparkling in my set, and if there's clouding (as all LCDs have to some degree) I really don't notice it. Cable programming like HBO HD looks great, PS3 games and Blu-Rays fantastic, and standard-def material isn't too bad either - very watchable, as long as you're not expecting miracles. The picture quality upgrade over the Sony W4100 isn't enormous, but it is noticeable, with deeper, more accurate colors, smoother motion and fewer artifacts. Though the 240Hz MotionFlow still looks a little fake for my tastes, the Bravia Engine 3 is visibly improved over the older Bravia 2 engine. Even if you're not going to spring for an XBR, definitely try to get a model with Bravia Engine 3.

FAVORITE FEATURES: Hallelujah, the screen has an anti-glare matte finish instead of the dreaded gloss on so many Samsungs, so glare is really well-controlled - we have no problem viewing with lots of daylight flooding in from a side window. The TV boots up quickly, with picture coming up normally within several seconds, and very little delay acquiring signals or switching resolutions. The PlayStation 3 integration is pretty neat - turn the PS3 on, and the TV automatically turns on; if it's already on, it switches to the right input. Once on, you can navigate the PS3 menu and control video playback through the TV's remote control. When you turn the PS3 off, the TV returns to your previous input. Fully customizable input labels are a nice touch that every TV should include. The side-mounted input jacks seemed odd to me at first, but they actually work really well - they are sufficiently concelead but allow a shallower wall mount as well as easier access. The internet widgets are mostly curiosities, but YouTube worked great, and Netflix/Amazon streaming are useful if imperfect (more on this later).

SOUND QUALITY: Most importantly to us (as we don't have a home theater), the sound from the built-in speakers is really excellent. It's reasonably full, with a natural midrange timbre and intelligible dialog. There are 4 speakers - a pair of down-firing woofers and side/back-firing tweeters - which fill out the sound nicely, as long as the TV is placed near a boundary like a back wall (it probably won't work as well in the middle of a room). It's not quite as nice as the sound on my gargantuan old WEGA tube TV, and it won't replace a home theater, but unlike so many Samsungs I've heard it's eminently usable for everyday TV or casual movie viewing.

DESIGN: The TV looks great - extremely sleek and streamlined, with a super thin bezel that my wife really likes. It doesn't have the imposing high-tech look of some previous XBR sets with the floating glass design, instead opting for a minimalist design with hidden speakers. We have it sitting on a 16" deep Elfa wall unit and it's very attractive without calling too much attention to itself. For the first few weeks, I was somewhat alarmed at how quickly the glossy black bezel attracted dust (I was wiping it down every other day), but thankfully this has mostly gone away - probably just some manufacturing residue holding a static charge or something. (FYI, the edge trim on ours is a darker charcoal-gray color, rather than the lighter silver I've seen on some earlier showroom models.)

CONS: my biggest pet peeve is the limited viewing angles of the LCD panel. If you drift even a few degrees off dead center, colors will fade rapidly, particularly reds. More than 45 degrees off axis and the picture is quite washed-out - the backlight bleed off-axis isn't as bad as our 32" Panasonic, but the Panasonic's IPS panel does a better job maintaining color fidelity. If you have lots of family and friends that like to watch movies together, or do a lot of viewing off to the sides, plasma is still the way to go. The internet functionality, while potentially useful, feels a little immature. Navigating through the interface is limited and sluggish, and some of the internet widgets are so slow as to be barely usable. I only tested Netflix streaming briefly and it did stutter at times, though a recent software update supposedly mitigates this. I still intend to use it, but for best quality, I'll rent the Blu-Ray. I also get the nagging feeling that the menus are a tad more sluggish than on the non-internet-capable W4100 - probably just extra overhead from the more bloated system software.

A couple more nits: Wi-Fi really should have been included, and it would have been nice if Sony included a SD card slot for photo/movie viewing, though the limited video codec support makes the latter rather moot. And I really wish the stand swivelled, particularly given the limited viewing angles.

In the end though, these gripes are fairly minor, and in a few weeks of ownership haven't detracted from our overall enjoyment of the set.

Incidentally, 40" is the perfect size for our living room (12' x 16' or so) - the 9' viewing distance is comfortable and easy on the eyes (my wife says she is squinting a lot less). For a more cinematic experience, or for a lot of game playing, a 46" is a better fit for this distance, but we specifically didn't want the room to become a theater.

CONCLUSION: All in all, I'm extremely happy with the 40XBR9! If I were to be really strict, I would probably have to dock a star here and there for the aforementioned cons, but given all the other 4 and 5-star reviews for TVs that I feel are inferior, I'm taking the liberty of grade-curving it up. Highly recommended!

UPDATE (1/31/10): I should probably mention that as cited in the CNET review, the XBR9 does suffer from some slight backlight uniformity issues. On a completely dark picture, patches of the screen will be slightly lighter than others. On my particular set it's only really noticeable in the top left corner against a black screen. Also, when using a HDMI splitter and my DVR in 720p output mode, the Sony was a bit finicky locking onto the signal and displayed an "unsupported signal" error (my Panasonic had no issues). However given that HDMI splitting can be rather marginal in and of itself, I don't consider it a major problem. (Switching the DVR to 1080i, which is a better setting for a 1080p TV anyway, was an easy workaround.)

PICTURE SETTINGS: Here is my calibration by eye, using test patterns on the PS3 and a blue filter. For Blu-Ray movies, I use the theater mode.

Picture mode: Custom

Backlight: 4 (theater: 3)

Picture: 85

Brightness: 50

Color: 55 (theater: 58)

Hue: G2

Sharpness: Min

Color Temp: Neutral (theater: Warm 2)

Cinemotion: Off

For TV viewing, my settings are (somewhat arbitrarily) slightly different

Picture mode: Standard

Backlight: 5

Color: 49

Cinemotion: Auto 1

All other features (noise reduction, black corrector, etc.) are always OFF. For the most accurate picture, don't use that stuff!

Motionflow is set to OFF except for some video material such as sports which can benefit from it. For film-based material I still find the motion interpolation rather unnatural in distracting.

Currently I am using some power saving features to be a little more green; however for the most accurate picture they should be set to OFF.
Excellent picture and Excellent Price, April 16, 2008

By J. Clarke "Clarke Man" (Modesto, CA USA)
This unit has an amazing picture. My previous TV was a Mitsubishi Diamond Model HD unit and the Panasonic's picture in HD and particularly SD is much better. Also, there's very little motion artifact compared to the Rear Projection Unit. I'm running this through a home theater system, so the sound is fine. I wouldn't rate the built in speakers as being very good but if you're running the sound through you're own amp, it won't make any difference. If I was to buy it again, I would try to order directly from Amazon or the partnered vendor rather than using Amazon as the middleman. There were some communication problems - but eventually it all worked out. Overall, this is a remarkable TV considering that it's true 1080p at less than $1800. I would definitely recommend it.
It would be hard to be unhappy with this unit. The colors are excellent and the image is stunning. The only comment I can make is of the industry as a whole. I researched this TV on Consumer Report. I used the March 2008 issue. Buy the time I went to by the unit, the model in the review had been replace with a newer better one. Within 30 days of my purchase, my TV had been replaced with a NEWER, BETTER ONE.
Panasonic 50" Plasma, April 11, 2008
I spent a lot of time researching this product and finally made the purchase in March of 2008. I have been totally happy with the set. It is an outstanding picture and dollar for dollar the best buy out there!

Thanks Amazon!
Great Picture , April 6, 2008

By S. Richerson (Summerville, SC)
This is my second Panasonic Plasma TV. I upgraded my 42" enhanced definition to this one and WOW what a difference. When I bought the 42" the 1080 was not out yet and the 720 was not worth the price for the upgrade, but the 1080 is. This picture is so clear and bright that at first I was dizzy when watching HD channels. Now...I cannot live with watching regular channels again. The sound is not the best, but I use the Panasonic home theater with it that is great. With the newer models coming out there are lots of great deals to be found and this one is a super deal.
We've had our Panosonic Plasma for about a month and love it. We watch sports alot and have been impressed with the picture. We looked at LCD's but I was not sold on the picture when watching fast action. We live close enough to major tv station towers to pic up HD Local broadcasts with a cheap set of rabbit ears, and have Dish HD for the rest. We also hooked up a Playstation 3 for the Blue-Ray, our daughter talked us into getting Guitar Hero and we play more than her. I would also recommend the Planet Earth Blue-Ray Series, it's absolutly breathtaking. To wrap it up I would highly recommend all of the above which we purchased from Amazon with no problems.
It's easy to see the difference in picture quality with the PN42B450 plasma HDTV. 720p high definition resolution and e-panel technology deliver sharp images and crystal-clear details. You also get more realism and vivid color. Plus bothersome glare isn't a problem with FilterBright and 600Hz Subfield Motion with a .001ms response time delivers a clear picture for fast-moving scenes. Enjoy eye-catching images and brilliant color every day.

Great quality at this price point, way above my expectations!

My goal was to get an HDTV for no more than $1000.

This is how I convinced that Plasma 42" 720 p is the right choice for me .I've done quite bit of click shopping at online stores- amazon, eBay, newegg, abt.

1. Size: I don't need a TV bigger than 50". I live in a Condo. This is for my living room. Watch distance is ~8 feet.

2. Output: For <=50" size, I can not distinguish if the output is in 720p or in 1080 p(or 1080i).Comcast telecasts HD in 1080i in my area. As per my research, it takes at the least 2-3 years for Cable providers to upgrade their output quality to >=1080 p as such upgrade requires huge investment.

3.Plasma vs LCD vs rear projection: Partly this choice was governed by next criterion, price. Rear projections , available in the market, are largely >50". Between Plasma and LCD- I could not find any annoying feature in either technology when I watch those sets in stores -Walmart, target, sears, frys and best buy. At times I found colors of Plasma-warm and more appealing than I found those on LCD.
4.Price- I found Plasma sets did better on this criterion over LCD sets. Also most LCD sets produce 1080p. I do not need 1080p and I did not want to pay for that feature.
5.Other hygiene factors: HDMI inputs(3), Component connection, Optical link for sound
6. Factors I did not care: height(above 6000 feet) . I 've no reason to believe that I'll need to use this set at that elevation. Watching in light: I 'm okay to pull the blinders if too much sunlight affects experience . Burn in: latest Plasmas have advanced technology that constantly moves the picture and does not let burn in happen. Also if burn in does happen after few years, I am okay. I am sure I'll go for another TV in next 3+ years and can use this in any other room. 1080p-bluray: my TV downgrades the output signal to 720p. I wouldn't notice any difference anyways between 720p vs. 1080 p at <50".
7.Brand: Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung are the leaders in plasma. Pioneer's TVs are way above my requirements- in terms of TV size and price.
8.Personal Tests- At stores- without looking at specifications- tried to call out output and LCD vs Plasma. I was largely successful in identifying LCD vs Plasma but not quite successful in identifying 720p vs 1080p. On closer look 1080ps looked better than 720ps.( I just told myself that store guys apply settings in such a way that 1080ps look better..See I made the decision to buy 720p and was looking for evidence to support my decision! )

I narrowed down choices to Panasonic P42X1 and SamsungPN42B450. Both appeared great- my wife likes Samsung's external finish over Panasonic. I like the fact that Samsung is $20 economical compared to Panasonic.

I bought this item from Amazon , received it yesterday. Out of box settings are great. Played around with those options on remote control -with energy efficient options, Picture modes, sound modes. It's exciting.

Will post updates to this review if find anything exciting or disturbing with this unit.

**Update 6/21/2009- I could not find any significant evidence that Plasma increased my energy bill.
-My energy bill for May 2008-June 2008 was USD 76, for Apr 2009-May 2009 was USD 82 , for May 2009-June 2009 it is USD 63. I've got few additional electronic appliances since last year including this Plasma (I kept my 20" LCD in my guest room) April last week.

For the price, I had absolutely not expected how great this TV is. The picture quality is definitely amazing, and I still can't find a TV in any display stores with better HD quality so far. Like all plasmas, it does show the true black perfectly and there's no motion blur what-so-ever in any of the video games or sports programming I've played so far. It also has inputs galore (3 HDMIs, VGA/sound PC input, optical audio output) which makes it easy to hook up to all the different components. I'm also able to cut down on extra cables by utilizing the optical sound output to my Denon receiver, so anything I view on the TV feeds digital sound to my AV system.

If you're looking for a true hidden gem, this TV probably offers the greatest value out there right now - and the Plasma is still superior to LCD at the moment.

I have had one before for two years now without any problem. This one is for a vacation home. Still good picture and color. Setup is relatively easy. It's too early to evaluate the reliablity for this one since I only have it for about 3 weeks. Generally happy with Amazon's shipping schedule (give you choice of date and hours for over three weeks time). You need to work closely with local delivery agent and give specific instructions. Follow-up with them is also important. Otherwise they may just dropoff the product at your building.
***** Makes me feel I made the right choice., July 12, 2009

By

S. Bae (Miami, FL)

If you're in the market for a HDTV then the Samsung PN50B650 is worth a second look. Externally, the attractive Touch of Color design incorporated into the clear beveled edged glass exudes sophistication and class. Internally, the Crystal Full HD Engine and Samsung's e-panel technology translates into a blur free clear vibrant picture perfect for sports and movies alike.

Truthfully I started off in the HDTV market looking for a 52" LCD panel with 1080p and 120hz specs. After a month of searching I realized that a name brand set with the above specs was out of my budget. I wasn't considering a plasma because I thought it was outdated technology, fear of image retention (IR), cost of operation, and plasma's heavier weight difference. However, as I researched more into plasmas I learned that my fears were they themselves outdated. Plasma was not outdated technology, many companies were still pouring money into plasma R&D. IR for sure is still a concern but with some simple basic precautions and use of the built in pixel shifting option, IR has become a very minor concern. This set is also Energy Star compliant using 40% less power than prior years plasmas (as per Samsung's website) and comparable to LCDs of similar size. As for weight, I wasn't too concerned because my set wasn't going on a wall. Regardless, the weight difference to a LCD is only about 15 lbs or so. Also, this set comes with an attractive stand that allows the TV to rotate for optimal viewing.

The cons I have so far are: Even with the FilterBright technology incorporated into the screen, glare is still a factor. I have my set in a room with no curtains but no direct sunlight and find myself changing the brightness control at times during daylight use. While the Media 2.0 is a fantastic feature (and the reason why I highly recommend this set over the B550 for a few extra $) it can be slow at times. Lastly, the speakers on this TV are marginal. Not bad in loudness but definitely no mid range or bass as one would expect. You will eventually need something externally powered.

I will not bore you with pros and cons of this set's internal specs, you can interpret them anyway you want but for a non HDTV expert that was merely trying to get the best value for the money, with great picture quality and technology (e.g. Cinema Smooth 24p frame rate), in an attractive looking TV, this Samsung was a clear choice for me. Lastly, the other plasma I was considering was the Panasonic G10. It has slightly better reviews but esthetically IMO the Samsung was a clear winner. For the non HDTV expert like myself, the image quality differences were unnoticeable. On a side note, as the post above had mentioned, standard def cable channels are pretty darn good on this set compared to my old 37" LCD.

*I do not have the buzz or the pinkish hues some others claim on their sets.

Update: After 5 months of use, my Samsung tv is is still going strong with no issues. Picture quality is still bright and vivid. I have either found the most balanced setting for day and night time use or my eyes have gotten used to this set because I longer find myself adjusting the picture settings. Burn in is not an issue and its not even on my mind (although I do not play video games on it).
Its great having a tv with online capabilities. While I don't personally find myself using the "widgets" very often, I do appreciate the no hassle automatic software updates to the tv. This tv's speakers are adequate for everyday use but for movies and sporting events an externally powered speakers are advised. I use a Sony sound bar that looks and sounds great with this set. My electric bill has increased about $10 per month. The set is on for 10 plus hours a day.

***** Highly recommended!, June 24, 2009

Basically I've had this TV for about 3 weeks already, and wanted to share since when researching this new 2009 Samsung PN50B650 set, there were limited reviews.

the specs and price on this had me at hello...

3,000,000:1 Mega Contrast
0.001ms pixel-response time.
600Hz
Cinema Smooth
4 HDMI ports
Tuners: ATSC / NTSC / QAM
ENERGY STAR qualified
Anynet
DLNA

First off I was always sketchy on Plasma...because of course burn in, and the whole LCD rage taking off.

Basically it was a "burn in" vs "dead pixel" face off.

But burn in is a non issue...sometimes the History channel will leave its logo for a few seconds, but it's not even noticeable unless you try to find it. I play PS3 games on it and it's perfect.

The 4 HDMI ports are priceless....I thought it would be overkill...but add in a TivoHD, PS3, Receiver...and I'm down to 1 side HDMI input left...

The 650 also has the extra internet USB adapter ($75) is very nice as well....connecting to Flickr, your network & Yahoo Weather is very nice.
not built in but, so what.

The TV speakers are basic and tolerable I guess, but if you are looking to get a 50" plasma, I would hope you would have a home theater in a box at least.

The TOC finish is very very nice, and the touch of color really makes this set stand out...I thought I'd hate it but once it's in the house...it is nice.

I think the main reason to really look at this set is the "Cinema Smooth" feature which is present on this panel....and I think only until you get to the 850 model you won't see it available. This is very nice since it delivers in the native 24p content, same frame rate as movies are recorded.

and I don't have any buzzing, which some people were reporting on the AVS Forum.

Well compared to my Samsung 40 40A650 LCD 120hz, which I really liked...this Plasma is a big step up.

In the store the bright lights and the demo modes make the LCD stand out...but in my home setting....holy bright...it was always in movie mode...so now the kids can play games on it in, the plasma is for the living room now.

The blacks and whites are more lifelike on the Plasma...although the LCD has way whiter whites...it just make it look too digital.
basically I have a much better viewing angle...pic looks perfect from all angles....and it looks more "real life quality"..if that makes sense.

basically I still can't get used to the "3D Soap Opera effect" on the LCD, and the speed is still nowhere to the plasma especially in sports...even with the 120hz I could catch the blur in a football.

Here's my deal sealer....standard def channels, are pretty good...I can watch them again. On the LCD...standard Def..I preferred to watch an old Toshiba 36" CRT in the loft if I had to.

granted it's not an 850 or 950....but the price difference is huge.
at this cheap of a price, I'm thinking about getting a second...seriously it's a steal.
I love this tv. This PLASMA SAMSUMG PN50B650 TV is the BEST TV you can buy, Picture clarity is stunning with Digital or HD. The color intensity is brilliant and the clarity are perfect.
I still have a sony LCD in the living room but this blows it away for clarity,

We checked out Consumer Reports before plunging into the confusing and confounding task of choosing a new TV. My husband was dead set against plasma at first due to the initial problems plasma TV's were known for- burn in, reflection, and energy consumption. Boy are we both glad he gave this TV a chance. The picture quality is absolutely amazing. To achieve maximum useage out of the 1080p, 600hz capability, definitely invest in a blu ray player and upgrade to hd TV with your cable or digital TV provider. Seriously, once you see an HD image on this baby, you'll never want to watch anything else. My husband plays video games and if you like to game, you have to go plasma. Now lets talk price. Our old LCD Samsung that we replaced with this TV cost us about $500 more and was 8 inches smaller. We bought it here, on amazon, on sale with no sales tax and free shipping with our amazon prime trial for a grand total of $1139. How bout them apples?! The blu ray images are so amazing it is almost like you could walk right into the picture. Some have almost a 3D quality. No jaggies, blurring, or any of the traditional LCD problems. This TV is energy star rated, we haven't seen any burn in. I'll be honest and say that I'm still getting used to seeing a bit of reflection after having an LCD for so long. We have it in a pretty bright room, so sometimes we need to shut the curtains so we're not distracted by the reflection. A small small price to pay for such an amazing picture and a great price. One last thing- we also looked at the 850 model of this TV. The ONLY difference between the two is the thickness of the unit, and the price. So, unless having a TV that is an inch and a half thick versus 2 and a half to 3 inches thick for about 500 bucks more is super important to you- stick with this one.

Had my Samsung UN55B8000 TV a couple of weeks now. It has more than lived up to the hype. Hooked it up and put on a blu-ray disk. Even the delivery guy's jaw dropped, and he's delivered/set up hundreds of TVs.

TV is only inch and half thick and only weighs 60 pounds or so.

In fact, it is sometimes almost too good. When viewing people on HD you can see every little mole, scar, wrinkle, stray hair, makeup, five o'clock shadow, makeup line, etc. I'm sitting here watching the news and I can clearly see tiny pieces of lint on the guy's black suit. I'm guessing the talking heads of tomorrow are all going to have to have much better complexions.

If you like to tweak your TV this one provides a lot of different controls. There are already some websites that will give you what they consider good tweaks to maximize the pic. You can also look for the B7000 tweaks. Looks pretty darn fantastic right out of the box so if you aren't a techie, don't worry about it.

Sounds..not particularly good or bad, but I don't want TV speakers taking up space anyway. If you are going to spend this kind of money for a TV you should be using your stereo system.

Some reviewers were complaining about the number of inputs. Again, how many is enough. I run my PS3, XBOX360, IPOD, and the Dish box through my Denon and so I only use one HDMI.

You can plug it into the internet. No set-up, just plug it in. First thing it did was download 12 updates to itself. Have no idea what they did but ...didn't cause any problems. It automatically loads up some of Yahoo's widgets. Fun to try but...not something I have really gone back and used much. Also has some built in content...recipes, artwork, etc. that I haven't bothered to look at.

You can plug in USB drives and view content directly off the drive.

I long ago got rid of my roof antenna. I bought a little Turk indoor antenna and plugged that in so I can pop over into over-the-air signals and watch TV. It will automatically search and find the on-air channels. It even downloads some kind of TV guide from the internet for the channels it finds.

I also wanted to see if there was any signal degradation from Dish. I haven't noticed the HD degradation with Dish that I had with Comcast. The way Comcast packed the HD signals you could see a real difference between OTA and the packed pics.

Samsung also provides software which allows you to use your PC as a server. Then you can display your pics, music, etc on the TV. Took a little playing around but was easy compared to some of the others I've tried to use.

I've played games with both my PS3 and the XBOX360. No problems. No pixelating. Did not bother to change TV over to game mode. I haven't fooled around with the 240Hz function. I just leave it on standard.

I'm sure there are other features I haven't tried. With the ability to update itself over the internet I have no doubt they will teach it even more amazing tricks.

I've set up my Harmony 880 Pro to control all my devices including the IPOD. IPOD menu/info will display (through my Denon) on the TV.

All of the above features are great but the main thing is... the picture is just absolutely mind-blowing wonderful.

So, fantastic TV. I am VERY happy with it. Obviously I highly recommend it.

((Now I'm watching Wall-E in HD and it is pretty amazing.))

***** You have to have this TV!,

January 25, 2010

By John Schmid(Windham, ME)
Enough has been said about the picture of this TV...its all true. Buy the TV! Amazon shipping is first class. Drivers brought the TV into the house and hooked it up. No chance of a DOA unit! Shipping was also fast and traceable. I am using the TV with an antenna and a Sony home theater with a up-convert DVD. I put in the Disney movie Cars and you can see the metallic fleck in Lightning's paint!!!

I purchased a ScreenProtector online because I have kids. It looks like it will work, but the anti-glare surface does lose a little resolution. I think the TV Armor protector would have been better (Read the reviews)! For the money, I like the idea of having something between this TV and the kids.

I also purchased the Samsung Linkstick for wireless Internet access through my connection. I wouldn't recommend it. The Yahoo widgets are s-l-o-w to respond and each widget operates a little bit different. I still haven't gotten some to work (like CBS). You get bored waiting for the content to arrive and give up. I think a better bet would be to use the new Boxee Box once available, or use your PC to stream content through your PC to the TV using Boxee software. There are other boxes that do the same thing. These things are *designed* to stream this content, the Yahoo widgets that the TV runs were not.
