Since we’re pretty sure no one wants to look at the weather forecast, here are some other predictions, these for the District 3 boys basketball playoffs that continue Tuesday and Wednesday nights (weather permitting, of course).

Class AAAA

Plenty of Lebanon County interest here, with Cedar Crest seeded No. 1 and hoping to make a deep run. The Falcons, like all of the top eight seeds, are rewarded by playing their first-round game at home Wednesday. Cedar Crest draws a very young and talented York County team, Spring Grove, which defeated division rival Red Lion to win a trip to South Lebanon. Sophomore guard Eli Brooks scored 30 in that game. Cedar Crest should advance to a 1 p.m. game Saturday at the Giant Center against the Harrisburg/Hempfield winner.

Our final four picks are Cedar Crest vs. Reading, Cedar Cliff vs. defending champion York.

Reading’s probable quarterfinal opponent is Lancaster, which has a first-round game against Cumberland Valley, the team that edged Lebanon in a play-in. That game is scheduled for Gov. Mifflin. Cedar Cliff is likely to see a very big and athletic Northeastern in the 10 a.m. game Saturday at the Giant Center. The middle game of that Saturday tripleheader will match two very familiar foes, York and Central York, who played for the York-Adams title Friday, with York winning.

Eight teams qualify for states, which means all of the first-round winners are guaranteed at least four more games.

Class AAA

This class is very strong at the top but not as deep as in many years. Six teams will qualify for states.

Top seed and defending champ Susquehanna Township has a very tough quarterfinal opponent in Berks County runner-up Berks Catholic. That should be the best of the quarterfinal tripleheader Friday at Giant Center.

The other strong quarterfinal matchup is Steel-High vs. West York, which will be played Friday at Warwick. West York nearly knocked off Bishop McDevitt, the No. 3 seed, late in the regular season.

McDevitt, assuming it can defeat No. 15 seed Palmyra Tuesday, is a solid favorite over the Cocalico/Conrad Weiser winner, and No. 3 seed Manheim Central should handle either Boiling Springs or Gettysburg.

We think the top four seeds will hold serve, meaning that the semifinalists will be Susquehanna Township vs. Steel-High and Bishop McDevitt vs. Manheim Central.

Class AA

This class is up for grabs, with five real solid teams. Three qualify for states.

Top seed Camp Hill opens against the Delone-York Catholic winner. Perennial power Trinity lines up against Antietam. Lancaster Mennonite will face the Tulpehocken-Columbia winner and Hanover will play Upper Dauphin, a 6 seed despite a 20-4 record.

Looks like seeds should hold here too, producing a final four of Camp Hill vs. Trinity and Lancaster Mennonite vs. Hanover.

Class A

Here’s a class where the clear favorite is not the top seed.

West Shore Christian is 20-3 and seeded No. 1, but it will be a surprise if No. 2 seed Hilda Goodling Impact Academy of York doesn’t win the district. Impact played an independent schedule and went 9-8, including two victories in the Northern Lebanon Holiday Tournament.

Four seeds do advance to states, with the other top seeds, Millersburg and Halifax, likely to join West Shore Christian and Impact Academy.

Looking ahead to next year, we can expect another strong season for Lebanon County boys’ basketball teams.

Cedar Crest, still basking in the pride of a 26-6 season that included Section One and Lancaster-Lebanon League championships and a runner-up finish in the District 3 AAAA tournament, returns nine of its top 12 players. The Falcons also had a strong JV team. Cedar Crest’s non-league schedule will closely resemble this year’s, with Crest opening in Lower Dauphin’s tip-off tournament. Hershey and Conrad Weiser are set to return for Crest’s holiday tournament, which is seeking a fourth team because Carlisle opted out. The Falcons will again play Central York and Central Dauphin as single games.

Lebanon loses four senior starters from its 18-9 team that won Section Two and will need its younger players to work hard in the off-season. Two freshmen who played on the JV team will be counted on to strengthen next year’s varsity. Lebanon’s tip-off tournament will again include Elco and Muhlenburg, with Lancaster Mennonite completing the field. Lebanon will return to the Mechanicsburg holiday tournament and will play Gov. Mifflin and Hershey as its other non-league games.

Elco figures to make a big jump next year, with sophomores Colton Lawrence and Caleb Buchmoyer leading a good class. Northern Lebanon and Lebanon Catholic will be hit hard by graduation and need younger players to step up.

Palmyra faces a tough battle in the Mid-Penn Keystone Division, as it always does. To show how tough that division was this year, Susquehanna Township lost five games in the Keystone but was still strong enough to win the District 3 AAA title and reach the state AAA championship game.

PLAY BALL!! — Two years ago we picked the Giants to beat the Tigers in the World Series and it actually happened! Last year, we had Detroit beating the Reds in the World Series. Uh, no, although both made the playoffs and Detroit reached the American League Championship Series, losing to the Red Sox.

This year, logic would say the Dodgers, Cardinals and Nationals would be favored in the National League divisions, with the Rays (or Red Sox), Tigers and A’s favored in the American League. Well, the heck with that.

Since it’s an even-numbered year, we will again go with the Giants, led by NL MVP Buster Posey and Cy Young winner Madison Bumgarner, to bounce back and beat the A’s in a rematch of the 1989 earthquake series.

Before we say goodbye to the 2014 high school hoops season, just a reminder that senior boys’ and girls’ all-star games, organized by Bill and Mike Gaffey of pahoops.org, will be played Friday and Saturday at Harrisburg Christian School, 2000 Blue Mountain Parkway, near Linglestown, north of Interstate 81.

Schedules and rosters are available on the website. Three Friday games begin at 6 p.m., six Saturday games begin at 2:15 p.m.

Many of Lebanon County’s top senior players will play in the games. When we hear where they are going to college, we will let you know on Twitter @sesnyderleb.

Looking ahead to next year, we can expect another strong season for Lebanon County boys’ teams.

MARCH MADNESS: All four of our Final Four picks (Florida, Michigan State, Arizona, Michigan, with Arizona over Michigan State in the final) are still alive but Wisconsin is looking like a big hurdle for Arizona Saturday. So we’ll see what happens.

PLAY BALL!! — Two years ago we picked the Giants to beat the Tigers in the World Series and it actually happened! Last year, we had Detroit beating the Reds in the World Series.
