For some reason everyone wants to be entrepreneur these days. It's like being a rock star in the 70s or a stock broker in the 80s. I have also fallen in with this fad but not because I want the "jet money" as Penelope Trunk would say. My reasons are less about money and more about wanting to create something which makes an impact on the world and which is more "mine" than the work I do for an employer. I'm old enough (30s) to have developed some confidence in my own judgement and lost all confidence in the judgement...

The male is a different workplace animal to the female. Over 13 years of working in all-male offices, I've had a chance to see the pros and cons of those differences. See my previous post on things I could learn from my male colleagues. 1. Your Ego is not your friend I have lost count of the number of times that male colleagues have acted against their own best interests in order to salve their ego. A typical example is where the Micromanager would accompany me to a meeting where I was doing a technical presentation. He, or some other...

Working in IT, it's no surprise that 95% of my colleagues have been men. So I have had plenty of time to observe the male approach to work and how it differs from my own. Here are a few useful lessons I learnt from my male counterparts. 1. World domination is allowed A former boss, the Micromanager was brought in a few years ago to take charge of my business unit. While academically intelligent, he turned out to be an inexperienced manager with no knowledge of sales or negotiation. Unfortunately, all of the above were part of his remit.
