Howdy everyone!! They are coming back for show number three on Good Friday October 11, 2013. Bring your families out to see this amazing band Live!! If you missed the sold-out shows the first two times you don't want to miss this one!! They bring Bluegrass & Blues to the next level. Fish & Bird's latest album, Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, marks a major step forward for the young band. The project began in Victoria, BC in 2006 as an acoustic duo, comprised of Taylor Ashton (banjo, guitar, vocals) and Adam Iredale-Gray (fiddle). On their 2007 self titled debut, their take on 'folk' included original songs in odd time signatures and traditional murder ballads with rock beats. 2009's Left Brain Blues was a more mature exploration of the space between folk traditions and reckless creativity, with Ashton & Gray playing multiple instruments on each song, and toying with the formats that inspired them. Some of the friends they enlisted to help fill out the sound on the record and at live shows eventually became permanent members of the band, and now Fish & Bird are the five-piece indie-folk powerhouse we know today. They have weird vocal improv sections, they rock out in 11/8, sometimes it seems like they're playing bluegrass, and they might make you cry. Howdy all of you tremendously fit to listen to Music at its best Lovers! We have a serious treat for all of you coming up on Saturday June 29. Stopping in for one night only at Cafe Le Hibou is Rykka. She is a serious Pop Sensation and will perform an acoustic gig in our little town. This is the show to catch at Cafe Le Hibou this year!! Mark my words down in Pen in your planners or at least with a digital pen in your notepads, iPhones and droid devices. Here is a little bit about her New Album ...

The 12 songs that make up Rykka's debut album, Kodiak, were penned in the European farmhouse where she composed for much of 2011. Sessions subsequently took place in Vancouver's Mushroom Studios and District Four Recordings with input from engineer Sean Penner (You Say Party! We Say Die!), mixer Warne Livesey (Matthew Good Band, 54:40), and producer Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother, Hannah Georgas).

"Ryan has a really strong vision," Rykka notes. "I wanted to work with him because I knew that we would clash. He fights for his idea and I fight for mine, and what we come away with is the right thing to do."

All of Kodiak's tracks are sung from the perspective of different animals — "Blackie" a murder of crows, "Down in the Depths" deep sea fish — but they carry unquestionably human themes and concerns. Listening to Rykka's cryptic yet relatable poetry, fans might never realize that the protagonists are not people.

The Unseen Strangers have ambitiously cultivated a musical identity shaped by good old-fashioned bluegrass, the limitless barrage of contemporary musical influences, and a relentlessly curious sense of humour. The Strangers draw from the beeps and buzzes of the modern world to create an imaginative, energetic brand of acoustic music that is unmistakably their own. The band has toured Eastern Canada three times, performing showcases at NXNE and OCFF to name a few, and is a favorite at festivals featuring genres spanning Folk, Country, Bluegrass, Rock, and Electronic.

In 2007 The Unseen Strangers formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Within two years, the Strangers’ debut release “Shoot First” won the 2009 Music Nova Scotia Award for “Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year”.

In 2010 The Unseen Strangers left the East coast and headed for Toronto, Ontario to record their sophomore release with acclaimed producer Andrew Collins. The move to Toronto reinvigorated the Strangers, the group boasts two new skilled musicians, Matt Elwood on 5 string banjo/vocals and Mike Mezzatesta on mandolin.

The group just released their third studio effort, “Follow the Sound EP” and went on a successful tour of the East coast in fall 2012. The full-length album “Follow the Sound” is completed and scheduled for release in spring 2013. The album includes 11 original songs featuring, “Facebook Waltz”, which won the humorous category for the 2012 “OCFF Songs from the Heart” songwriting competition and “Rambler’s Plea”, which won the 2012 International Acoustic Music Award for Bluegrass/Country Song of the Year.

Bull Kelp began when songwriters Taylor Ashton and Zoe Guigueno had six weeks to kill in Winnipeg in the fall of 2011. They had played together for 2 years in the five-piece alt-folk band Fish & Bird, and when Guigueno announced her departure from that band, the two devised Bull Kelp as a way to continue making music together, and to arrange new songs that didn’t seem to fit in their other projects.

After each spending a lot of time in larger bands, the two decided to explore the limitations of the duo format, and to each contribute roughly half of the songs. They set out to create an engaging repertoire with only Guigueno’s upright bass, Ashton’s guitar (and sometimes banjo), and their two voices – pushing each element into new and different roles from song to song. The two trade lead & harmony vocals between songs and paint a simple but intricate instrumental landscape with parts that seamlessly swap around rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic duties.

For their debut album, Painting & Drawing - out March 15th on Fiddle Head Records - they took lyrical inspiration from novels, movies, traditional folk songs, science podcasts, and the magic of everyday life. What they ended up with was an album’s worth of songs about love, birth, death, coffee, chess, and other things that happened to be on their minds. Diverse in its subject matter and arrangements, on a whole the album has a cohesion that is more Lynchian than literal. The album addresses universal themes like watching your childhood friends start families (Grown Ups) and the bittersweetness of parting (I Ain't Givin' Up On You), along with more surreal scenes like laying underneath a piano in a house that is melting around you (Matryoshka). It paints an impressionistic picture of what it is to be young, trying to sort out your life amongst growing access to information and shrinking certainty about the future, while we paradoxically become more connected and more alienated by technology.

Originally conceiving Painting & Drawing as a potential band name, the two realized it made a great name for an album. One day in March, the two posed with their instruments at the Toronto School of Art for a drop-in painting class, and all the artists generously agreed to let their pieces be used for the album’s artwork. Each gorgeous piece depicts Taylor Ashton & Zoe Guigueno in a different style and medium, from a different angle. As a collection, the paintings & drawings give you a sense of the duo that a single portrait never could. This reflects the way that the songs on the album show you different angles of their particular slice of the human condition, adding up to a nuanced, impressionistic whole.

The album was recorded in a tiny Montreal apartment by Manitoba’s Darwin Baker (of the Crooked Brothers – with whom Guigueno toured extensively in Europe) and mixed by BC’s Adam Iredale-Gray (Ashton’s co-bandleader in Fish & Bird) – a true community effort. While the duo are mainly kept busy by their main projects – Ashton with Fish & Bird, and Guigueno having recently been recruited by in the Boston-based progressive stringband Joy Kills Sorrow – Painting & Drawing captures a point in time they are proud to share with the world, and they’re excited to fit in live appearances whenever possible.

PHIL JENKINS Celebrates The Gatineau River Poetry, Songs & Stories SAT, NOVEMBER 10, 9PM

Howdy Everyone!! Come on out November 10th, Next Saturday Evening starting at 9PM for an evening of poetry and song celebrating the Gatineau River, and rivers in general. There are a lot of local songs out there about the river; Phil Jenkins has three and I think just about every local musician has one - and there is a fair bit of poetry about rivers. Phil has a collection of haiku from when he used to write a column for the Lowdown written by local people and several of them are about the river, and of course the river is flowing right past Cafe Le Hibou, so what better place to have a real celebration of our beautiful river. There hasn't been a real party on the River Road in Wakefield since they cancelled the sewage treatment plant, so come on out and bring a story, song, haiku or poem about the river or about rivers in general and their importance to society.

So, a one-night Riverceleb, bring along a poem, a haiku, whatever you like, or a river song, and people can contact Phil beforehand if you want to sing a song and need accompaniment at 819-827-1638. WE can even set up a screen and people can bring in their pictures of the river. This will be a great community event!! Come on out and show your support for this fantastic community!!

Cost will be whatever you can afford. Hopefully around $5 if that is possible.
