Contour Palettes for cosplay: A three-part guide and review/recommendation.

For those who don't know, I'm crazy about contouring my face when it comes to cosplay, may it be for male or female cosplay,

I always reach for my contour palettes to create the perfect base to reshape my face for a cosplay. We can't all be born with the perfect face, eyes or nose shapes for some characters, so as a cosplayer you should be able to rework your face with the optical illusion of creating contours and highlights on your face. Now, to say that it's easy to pick the right palette for your cosplay, is an understatement. So let me help you pick out the right palette for your cosplay.

In this part I will be discussing my favorite type, which is cream-type contour and highlight palettes. There are now several types ranging from pan-type palettes or the handy stick-type contour palettes that are ready and rarin' to go if you're the type to do your makeup at the venue itself. But I'll be talking about the pan-type palettes as they usually offer a wider range of shades as well as more value for money when it comes to flexibility in terms of shade. I'm partial to this type myself because there's just so many to choose from from so many different brands out there. I picked two of the ones I like to use the most to share with you. One, that's extremely heavy and pigmented, good for photography and another that's capable of being built-up every layer you put up till you're happy with what you get.

Let's start off with Sleek Make Up's Contour palette in Medium.

I chose the medium shade because the light shade's colors tend to disappear on my skin tone.
I needed a darker shade for the heavy contouring I do for photography.

Sleek's cream contours come in three shades, Light, Medium and Dark. For the sake of trying it out, I chose the medium shade as the shades on the light palette tended to disappear on my skintone. So you get 3 lighter shades for highlighting (from L to F: Medium 01, Medium 02 and Medium 03) and 3 darker shades for contouring (L to F: Medium 04, Medium 05, Medium 06). The cream is thick but pliable, not sticky or annoyingly rough like some contour creams I've tried in the past. These are smooth and velvety, buildable coverage/color and easy to work with. Best blended out with a damp blending sponge to create a light coverage or with your fingers if you're the type who likes to warm the product up with your fingers.

I recently used this particular palette for my Doppio Vinegar cosplay trial, at first I had a bit of difficulty working the color but I eventually got the hang of it and even used Medium 04 to create my freckles.

Moshi Moshi? Bossu?

It's fun to use for creating heavy drag-king style makeup for crossplaying and blendable enought to work with makeup that demands less darker shades for contour or a more natural look.

Pros:

Easily blendable and thick enough to only use a small amount to achieve good coverage.
Smooth and creamy formulation
Paraben-free formulation.
Comes in a variety of shades, depending on your skin-type.
Comes with a basic printed-out guide for newbies at contouring
Can be used for skin-texturing/ adding facial markings such as old scars, freckles, moles, etc.
Great for cross-play/drag-king makeup

Cons:

A little too thick for ordinary looks, may need alot of blending with a damp sponge to get the best light finish.
Personally, I really hate that it comes in a matte plastic case, as I feel like it attracts so much dirt vs. a smooth and shiny case.
Shades may be too limited, IMHO, the lighter shades for this particular palette can still be used for contouring vs. using them for highlights.
Price is a little high if bought in-store at malls at around 900+. I had purchased mine from Lipstick All U Can over at their Trinoma stall at Pop Culture for P 890. You can also check out their shopee store over here
Only has 6 months shelf-life from the day it's been used/opened according to the box.

Moving on to the next palette that I personally use, it's one from Makeup Revolution London. It's their Ultra Cream Contour Palette, the one I use on not-so-heavy makeup looks or for usual makeup.

One early warning I must bring up with this brand is that it contains some parabens, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone who might be sensitive towards that particular ingredient in cosmetics. Personally I like this particular cream contour palette as not only does it include multiple shades, it also has a really nice frosty highlighting cream included in the palette that works nicely if you're the kind who likes to add a little sparkle to your look. The downside though is that it's limited to just this ONE palette, no variations for skintones, just this one palette.

This particular palette needs a bit of build-up if you're after a heavy makeup look, but for lighter looks, this palette is my go-to one. I'm especially fond of the fact that it comes with so many shades to choose from, the down side though for me is that the light shades are TOO LIGHT for my particular skintone, but I believe they'd work well enough for others.

I used this particular palette to create my Sombra makeup trial.

Pros:

Buildable color and smooth formulation. Good for lighter makeup for cosplay that doesn't involve harsh lighting.
Smooth and buttery, easy to blend.
Multiple shades in one palette plus one shimmery/frosty highlighter
Has a shelf-life of 12 months/1 year. Good for long-term makeup plans/multiple cosplay shoots that span a year.
Relatively cheaper for the amount + multiple shade you get. This palette usually goes for 500+-800+ Pesos.

Cons:

Contains parabens
a little bit thin and on the oily side, but workable with a little powder.
may be too pale for some folks and only comes with this particular palette/shades.
Not as accessible as Sleek as they don't have an official store in-malls.

Overall, I usually recommend cream contour palettes to cosplayers who are much more well-versed when it comes to applying makeup as it's harder to control and blend out versus powder contour and highlight makeup. I'll be covering the powder-type contour palettes and show off a few that I use in the next post. Till then!

Manic Panic Lethal Lipsticks After Midnight Review

It’s been a while since I’ve done a product review or blogged for shits and giggles so bare with me as I try to catch up to speed. Firstly, this is a non-sponsored, unpaid review of a product I bought with my own money, Gwyshop or any of their partner shops did not pay me to do this review.
Secondly, I'm going to try and write more often than before so I wouldn't just laze about and let this blog catch dust once again. So without further ado, let's dive right into it!

One of the biggest events in the Philippine cosplay community, Cosmania, has just finished and as always I have a bit of “con-swag” or stuff I’ve bought from the convention itself. I usually come home with small knick-knacks or clothing but this time I've decided to buy an item I've been itching to get my hands on again for several years now.

For those who aren't from the Philippines, Manic Panic Cosmetics are a rarity and I'm honestly really happy that we've finally had a chance to get our hands on the products at a budget friendly cost. It's been over 5 years since I've had a chance to handle Manic Panic brand makeup and it's an absolute joy that Gwyshop now carries the lipsticks at conventions with their partner shop Ilovetodye. I've continuously been buying from Gwyshop for years now and I can proudly say that I'm glad to have the chance to once again do a review on one of their newer products.

I chose to try out the color "After Midnight" when "Raven" wasn't available since I've always been fascinated with metallic toned lipcolors. Most of the ones I've tried before either dried my lips out or looked absolutely horrific on my lips. Knowing that the new Lethal Lipsticks formulation had moisturizing ingredients as well as a cruelty-friendly credo that all Manic-Panic items follow I didn't hesitate to drop P650 on it (Give or take $14). I gave it an initial swatch and lip test when I got home but forgot that I still had a bit of makeup on my lips so I put off my review until today. The packaging itself is pretty solid, compact, not bulky and can fit in any lipstick case. It's made of hard plastic and has that glam-rock feel to it with it's little diamond like indentations that are actually grooves that look and are shaped like diamonds or rhinestones. It's clearly labelled with the "Tish and Snooky's Manic Panic" label at the back and the "Glamnation High Voltage Cosmetics" line on the from along with an adorable skull and crossbones wearing Lady Liberty's crown, signifying the brand's roots in New York City.

This is a swatch on my skin with no primers, it look me two swipes on my skin with a very light pressure to apply a nice coat that showed off the color. It felt smooth and smelled faintly floral but not overpowering, something I very much appreciated as my previous experiences with metallic lipsticks left a very grainy texture and a disgustingly strong chemical smell that I absolutely hated. Although it does run a little too thin on a single swipe, the color is surprisingly buildable and easy to work with in terms of building up. The color reminds me alot of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night and makes me absolutely giddy with delight because of how it looks. I half expected it to be a darker, much more navy blue color with a little sparkle but it's more of a blue foil color.

I plan on doing a comparison of this to the NYX Wicked Lipstick's blue colored lipstick once I get my hands on it to see who's got a better metallic blue lipcolor between the two of them.

I initially wanted to create a look similar to Maya from Boarderlands 2, a game that my brother and I absolutely enjoy, but since I don't have the right wig for her I decided to just go for an inspired look rather than going for a full-on cosplay trial for the character.

After putting on my new Twilight contact lenses (to e reviewed), applying my eye makeup and trying out my new skin toned eyeliner (another product review for another day) I immediately started applying the lipstick on my lips after exfoliating, applying a little lip balm and using a lipbrush as a way to line my lips, I was surprised that, like on the back of my hand, it was smooth with no grainy texture, the smell was tolerable and not overpowering and it didn't feather compared to the last metallic colored lipstick. I let the product sit on my lips for a while, noting that it wasn't drying at all.

Although the metallic blue color isn't for every skin tone it was actually a surprise to me that it suited my skin at all. I was afraid that it might look too unnatural or made me look too pale but apparently it make it look hauntingly ethreal to a degree, which I love love looooove! My friends pointed out that it actually complimented my ash-toned blonde hair more than my usual baby pink lipcolor. The product itself is quite pigmented and retains its colors even on my very reddish colored lips.

Overall review:

Manic Panic Lethal Lipsticks:

Quality: 5/5- If I could get the whole series of colors in one shebang I would get it for sure. I'm especially curious over their opalescent and matte lipsticks.

Packaging: 4.5/5- Although I'm a lover of glam rock style items this does seem like it needs a bit more improvement on the packaging. I know it's aimed at the gothic crowd so I was hoping for something that was a bit more elegant.

Price: 5/5-Compared to big name brands that create uniquely colored lipsticks like Lime Crime, this is a little more worth it than the previously mentioned brand. Add the much more appealing and less childish and bulky looking packaging, that's a plus for me.

Overall: 4.5/5- I absolutely love this lipstick and would definitely try to get every color they have!

Will you be buying Manic Panic's Cosmetics line gain? ABSOLUTELY!

Gwyshop (2014 UPDATE REVIEW):

Communication: 5/5- As always they are courteous, honest and easy to communicate with online and offline at conventions. I love the fact that ate Dona and her fellow shop owners who sell their wares at cons know and use their own stuff . Which just goes to show you how much they love their own products and proves how effective they are IRL instead of relying on company photos. I'm also glad to say that they also now have an official website that updates their stocks regularly, especially after a con when most stocks are sold out.

Handling: 5/5- From the quick responses to shipping out orders to the meticulous and careful packaging, there is nothing to worry about if you're ever buying from Gwyshop or any of their partner shops. They pack it well and safely that I've yet to receive damaged or manhandled goods from them and I've been buying from them since 2011!

Pricing: 5/5- From false eyelashes to the highly sought after Sclera lenses for the ghoul in you, the prices of the items sold by the shop are fairly priced and are worth every penny. Have a certain item in mind but not really in your budget? Gwyshop will offer you alternatives that can suit your budget and needs without breaking the bank. I'm honestly hoping they'd bring more Manic Panic cosmetic items for sale and stock more of the more popular EOS/Twilight lenses as it's always a struggle to beat other people from buying certain products because the pricing is just so cosplayer friendly!

Overall: 5/5- This shop's pretty much been a shop that I've been patronizing since 2011 when I bought my first lolita wig and to this day they are still my go to shop for contact lenses and now, Manic Panic Cosmetics. They're the first booth I look for whenever I go to dealers halls and the only shop I trust to sell me authentic NYX cosmetics and EOS lenses at cons. They're an absolute delight to buy from and I've yet to have a bad experience from them.

I'm actually pretty hesitant in writing this blog entry because I know I'll be facing alot of flak for writing it but I honestly don't really mind facing the people/ seller who'd say that I ruined their businesses via this blog entry. I'd rather tell the truth than tell a lie like what they're doing...

I first encountered the hairchalking trend via my friend Kat who mentioned it once to me before while we were talking about girly-girl things. So I began to do some research as well as some ebay searches to see what the hype was all about. I encountered both Fashion Angel's Hair Chox and Monster High's version of said product. So I thought, oh how! How interesting <3

I like how these products actually have a handle in which the said "hair chox" wouldn't stain your fingers and the fact that they're SHAPED FOR HAIR USE, with those grooves and the cylindrical shape, add the fact that the said product is pretty large I wouldn't hesitate paying for said product if I had the money to burn for it. But since I am just a college student and a resourceful one at that, I decided to search the web for more info and alternatives to the products. To my surprise I found out that some people say that these products are basically the same as the soft pastels/ chalk pastels I use as an art enthusiast! Score! I could buy one of those cheap ones locally available and go crazy. The cheapest 12 piece product goes for around 150- 168 pesos (roughly around 2-4 dollars). Which I found a steal, after all, I would never use my Rembrandt brand ones for something as paltry as hairchalking.

But of course with every successful trend there will always be people who would take advantage of said trend and try to dupe people into purchasing similar products, with similar effects but with over the top prices, for products they payed a paltry sum for. Case and point is this...

70 pesos (roughly 2 dollars) for a single stick? Are you kidding me? :/ I'd add a bit more and I can buy a set of twelve at that price. And apparently it was "On sale" :/ because it use to be around 100 pesos.. The price they put it up for is almost as expensive as a SINGLE STICK OF PROFESSIONAL QUALITY/BRAND SOFT PASTEL like Rembrandt brand soft pastels, but let's face it! They're selling the cheap stuff for top buck and are robbing the less-informed masses blind!

I'm all for making money and working hard to make a living but cheating people out of their well earned cash for these so-called "hairchalk" their selling? Don't give me that BS that it's "High grade" or "Salon Grade" hair chalk. I know what Soft Pastels/ Chalk pastels look like, hell! ANY ART STUDENT, ART ENTHUSIAST, BJD FACEUP ARTIST etc. etc. can tell you that the items they are selling IS IN FACT SOFT PASTELS/ CHALK PASTELS!

Maybe you'll ask me, "Maybe they just look the same? Maybe chalk pastels don't even work on hair and you're just being a bitch about people making more money than you??!!!"

Pfffttt... I bought the CHEAPEST 12 piece soft pastel set just to prove that it's basically the same thing and it has the same result.. BEHOLD!

Ugh!!! People these days disgust me especially those who sell fake products! For those who know me oh so well know about my love for Korean/ Asian brand cosmetics. Although I own and patronize certain western cosmetics brands too, Asian cosmetics suit my skin better in terms of getting the right pale-yellowy shade that I have.

Korean cosmetics brands like Etude House, Natures Republic, The Face Shop, Missha, Lioele and Tony Moly have landed on local shores and have been widely embraced by the Pinay consumers for several years now. I guess we can also give props to the fact that K-pop is quite popular in our country. Teens can't help but try and emulate the pretty girls in K-Pop groups and I honestly can't blame them! From clothes to their makeup, people want to be like their K-pop idols or are interested in the Eoljjang/Ulzzang trend.

What is Ulzzang? It's a popular South Korean word which means "good-looking" or "best face". And of course to get this "best face" look people turn to makeup. I for one am quite thankful for the trend of Korean cosmetics in the country. From BB creams to cream liners most readily available Korean makeup brands in the local market are quite affordable and of good quality that even a non-working college student like me can afford on our meager allowance.

But of course, as we all know, once a good product goes out into the market or gets alot of hype and attention there's bound to be people who take advantage of the hype and create fake products just so they can also try to milk the cash cow. Behold! Fake Etude House products have now landed on our local shores. Some of you might say, "So? You know how people are when they can't afford something!" Well that's just it :/ Some of these people are selling it at prices that are practically the same price as the real deal! Behold! Case and point one:

Seriously!!! I just laugh my ass off at the fact that this person is selling that product at a price that's much more expensive than the real thing! Let's not forget the original paper bag and a reciept *quivers in my boots* ooohhh... so authentic!!! It's nice that this seller is trying to be environmentally friendly and trying to recycle and all but it doesn't absolve the FRAUDULENT ITEMS, now does it? What about the other laughably fake products?

What's worse is the fact that even for a seller of fake products this seller's prices are off the roof compared to the ones who are selling it at dirt-cheap prices... Lo and behold, Seller #2:

And if you surf through the link you'd see that most of the products are dirt cheap compared to the original and even cheaper compared to seller #1's items XD

Looking at this seller's prices for the fake items just makes me laugh, unlike seller #1 who's prices are so absurd, our last seller has prices that are reasonably low (I guess even people who sell fake products need to make a buck out of their "hard work"... Lying is hard work after all)

Hmmm... Almost all the same items with one or two that aren't present on seller #1's list.

I think it's pretty safe to say that fake EH products can be instantly identified by the knowing Etude House product consumer at a glance or two. I'm just disgusted by the fact that these people are duping others into buying these products. Seller #1 should be sorely ashamed of the fact that they're trying to pass it off as originals using EH paper bags =_= Seriously folks? You can find good, honest work in selling authentic cosmetics instead of these fakes. Simply said I wish that Etude House would not find offense in what's happening.

But for those who are unsure if the product you're buying is authentic or not (because I feel that eventually these dupe makers will try to get as close as they can appearance-wise on the packaging) it's best to buy them from THE ACTUAL PHYSICAL STORES.

Senbazuru Shop and Fantasy Sheep Wigs Review

Lemme start of by saying that this is a review of a wig I had won in the Senbazuru Shop's first contest. And to be completely honest I didn't really think i would've won the contest itself because it involved "like" votes in the percentage of the scoring... This isn't a paid review or a required review but rather a review that I just felt like doing, so let's begin...

A little background on Senbazuru shop, Senbazuru means "A thousand paper cranes" and for the Japanophile who knows about the lore behind it would know that once you fold a thousand paper cranes they are said to grant your wishes. The shop is established by the lovely miss Francine as her way of sharing her love for Japanese culture and cosplay. Their prices are given with a very small profit (trust me, I've compared with other shops!) and I might add that it's refreshing to see that they've always been pro-cosplayers in terms of budget and pricing. The shop is also assisted by miss Monique who is also a darling when it comes to customer service and wig suggestions :B

To be completely honest I was blown away by the fact that I won XD I do remember that winning the contest entitled me to a discount for the whole year, freebies, a free wig worth 2000 pesos, being able to rent out their wigs and becoming something of a "spokesmodel" of sorts, providing photos of their wigs when worn.

I received this package around late July after a 4-week wait which to be completely and utterly honest, is quick. I had no upcoming cosplay cons to attend and I've yet to get my costume for this particular wig.

So after I opened up the Xend shipping bag I was surprised with what I saw inside the bag. Besides my Zexion wig from Fantasy Sheep miss Francine was kind enough to send me a sweet treat as my freebie, which I thought at first was exclusively given to me. But to my delight and surprise most of those who've purchased from the shop received one too!

I've always appreciated sellers who take the time to personalize their packages and send cute messages or even calling cards, Senbazuru shop rises to the occasion and is true to their theme. They sent me a note with my name on it (to make sure I got the right package me thinks) and a paper crane with a short message!

And to consider that miss Francine wasn't feeling too well when she packed the wigs up and yet take the time to make the paper cranes and write messages? <3 Officially a super sweetheart in my books!

On to the actual wig review. First off, Fantasy Sheep is one of the leading wig brands when it comes to cosplay and wig styles that are rare to find. I was introduced to the brand about 3 years ago and whenever I have the opportunity to save up and buy one from the brand I've never hesitated in doing so because of one word, QUALITY.

The wig itself is a definable blue wig mixed with a few dirty blonde and darker blue fibers, not a sold blue which I found stunning since it gave the wig a bit more depth and personality instead of it being just another flat-blue wig. I commend FS for trying something new and actually making it work!

Let's start out with the tag, Besides the plastic tag that was attached to this wig (pic below) Fantasy Sheep doesn't attach a brand tag inside unlike CosplayWig or Lucaille brand wigs, Which I found odd, but considering that most FS brand wigs are identifiable via their fibers I wasn't surprised. The wig company boasts that they have the best heat-resistant wig fibers in the business and TBH they might just be! I use both my ceramic plated and iron plated hair irons on my fantasy sheep wigs and they've never melted or burned on me yet even in the prolonged exposure to the heat and repeated strokes with the iron just to get the style I want.

Fantasy Sheep wigs:

Quality: 5/5- They have yet to fail me in terms of quality and uniqueness. Besides being super-heat resistant they also have pretty good and near-accurate character specific wigs. A bit pricey but their wigs are worth every cent you put into buying them.

Packaging: 5/5- Very strong packaging and the cardboard supports they put around the wig when packed ensures that they come home in a non-squished and messed up manner.

Uniqueness: 5/5- Makes unique and original styled wigs as well as near accurate character wigs <3 super love!

Price: 4.5/5- A bit pricey but I duly believe that it's worth EVERY CENT!

Overall: 4.5/5- I absolutely love this wig brand and I'll keep being a loyal buyer from them.

If you've just noticed my love for lolita memes and funny images then I'm guessing you're new to my blog :))

Firstly lemme just say I've got nothing against people who supposedly "Cosplay" lolita besides the fact that it's a misconception I'm trying to help stamp out. Ok, down to business... What the Fuck is "Cosplay Lolita"?! If you've read my previous blog entry related to this you'd get that there is no such thing as a Cosplay Lolita in the POV of a lolita enthusiast. But to the cosplay newbie there is such a thing. I am here to clarify the different types of misconceived attire and faux pas that "Cosplay Lolitas" wear that differentiates them from real lolita enthusiasts.

According to Lolitafashion.org a cosplay lolita attire is "Cosplay Lolita is worn by those who wish to dress in Lolita as more of a costume, usually only at anime or game conventions. This type of Lolita outfit is normally crudely put together. A dress in this style is usually created from a sort of satin, adorned with oodles of scratchy lace, and is not very fitting to the Lolita fashion as a whole. A majority of dresses in this style are either too short and show far too much skin for any proper Lolita or are very reminiscent of a maid or nurse. This could be due to the fact that some associate Lolita with maid or nurse characters in anime." This is all too true here in the local cosplay community in the Philippines. If you take the time to search the words "Lolita Dress" in the local CNPH Cosplay Market you are bound to encounter a butt-load of so called Lolita dresses that are over-priced and not at all very lolita like or not lolita clothes at all. Why is that you ask? It's because of the misconception that Lolita is a genre of cosplay or a character in which anyone can cosplay. Hence the bad choices in fabric, lace, shoes and accessories.What's worse is the fact that people sell them at an almost premium price that makes me want to tear my hair out because they're unreasonably badly made and the materials used are just as bad, simply said they're an embarrassment.

My usual reaction to so called "Lolita Dresses" in the CNPH Cosplay market

Ahem...

So let me elaborate some of the so called "Cosplay Lolita" genres in the local community that I've noticed.

"Bedroom Costume Lolita" aka "Sexy Lolita", "Sex Shop Outfit Lolita"

O_o Sometimes I wonder if I will ever see a girl in a lolita meet wear this...

An outfit much more suited for pornography or for "private audiences" has been labeled by cosplayers as lolita for a loooong, loooooooong time in the local cosplay shores of the Philippines. I will never forget the con I attended where I asked one girl in a similar outfit to the one posted (when I asked out of curiosity) what character she was cosplaying answered to me "Oh, I'm cosplaying gothic lolita Sakura Haruno"

My dearest patron troll knows how I feel....

This kind of lolita is so rampant in the local community that it hurts the eyes. The misconceived notion that "If I want to cosplay something and show off my body, I have the right to sex it up!!!" is so widespread in the local community that you can't help wonder if the girls who wear those sorts of outfits know the actual purpose of the clothes that their wearing. Then again I have seen girls in the cosplay community wear much worse.

Lolita is supposed to be elegant, conservative and respectable looking even in the sub-genre of "Ero-Lolita" a focus on looking elegant is implied and championed by even the most liberal of lolita enthusiasts. To even DARE compare Ero-Lolita to this bedroom counterpart is like comparing Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy to tabloid smut. It's a gigantic no brainer as to why this ISN'T considered lolita. If you insist it is lolita, please, save us both the migraines and just get out...

Maid Lolita aka. *breathes in* "LookatmeI'mwearingamaidoutfitwithruffles,itmustbelolita"

Just because it has ruffles...

...Doesn't mean it's lolita :)) nor does the fact of it having lace make it lolita. If that were the case then just wearing regular lacey or ruffle-butt rumba panties is SO DAMN RORI-KAWAII DESUUU!!!! *fires confetti canon*

Ahem... There's this misconceived notion that maid outfits are also lolita outfits. uhhhh... I don't think I've ever seen a "Maid Lolita" in any of the GLBs or any site that talks about lolita. :/ Hence my statement "All that has ruffles and lace is not always Lolita!!!"

Maid outfits and the like are usually linked to anime characters in fanservice art or is the actual focus of said anime. And maid outfits are also a con staple due to the popularity of Maid cafes. This just proves my point about them, Maid cafe outfits are considered UNIFORMS by the staffers/ maids themselves, they never call it a lolita outfit or costume :/

So called maid lolitas are also SOOOO rampant in the Philippines that you'll drink yourself under the table if you make a drinking game out of it every convention. Nuff said.

The Lace Monster Lolita aka. "MORE LACE=MOAR LOLITA-I-ER IT IS"

If we reflect back to the belief that as long as it has ruffles or lace it's lolita then The Lace Monster Lolita is king... errr... QUEEN *cough* of all the lolitas.

So some of you might be asking, "So if I pile on lace and ruffles that makes me a cosplay lolita? But what about old-school lolita outfits?" This is were things get tricky. The answer is a blurred grey area. If you pile on lace and ruffles in a manner that has a coherent design as opposed to the monstrosity up there, then no, you won't look like a cosplay lolita BUT if you go overboard on them then you might just fall under that category. As for Old-School lolita outfits, where most of them were mostly brand-named outfits there's still a matter of one thing that separated them from the so called cosplay lolita and that's QUALITY. Even back then good quality lace was used for old-school lolita designs that may seem ITA (painful to the eye) today. Cosplay lolitas are usually more concern in getting more for their bucks than the quality that they buy. Hence most of them would go for cheap-ass scratchy, synthetic lace and shiny-ass fabrics. I'll talk about cloth some other time.

I will be honest, I once owned a lace monster dress complete with shiny fabric that would puts me to a large amount of self-embarrassment over my old lolita choices.

Moving on...

Cat Girl lolita aka. "SUPAH KAWAII DESSU RABITO/NEKO-EAR LOLITA DESUUU"

This won bodyline's design contest? O_o

I think most folks would agree that animal ears on lolita outfits make for weeaboo-ish attire and is a definite no no in lolita outfits. What is a weeaboo you might ask? A weeaboo is an individual who is obsessed with Anime/Otaku culture to the point of outright denial and forsaking of their own cultural background or in layman's term they're the creepers who are overly obsessed with anime/manga/whatever in your community.

The presence of tails and even mewling in conventions of these so called catgirls just makes me wonder if they're actually just closeted furries (no offense towards furries). :/ It may look cute on your favorite anime character but the presence of animal ears on a piece of lolita clothing (even on brand items!!!) makes it look cheap and tacky, a common mistake of the newbie lolita that makes them seem like cosplay lolitas instead. Always remember that the main goal of a lolita is to look "elegant, classy and refined" and a pair of animals doesn't make your outfit so, keep your weeaboo-ness out of your lolita closet

I don't really have much to say but this kind also includes rabbit ears, demon horns, cat ears, dog ears, wolf ears, etc. etc.

I've been recently bothered by a few folks to write about the difference between lolita and cosplay from what I see locally. I know that I'm attracting alot of Butthurt folks, wank, white knights and other shit but I honestly don't give a damn :/ So lemme try to elaborate the differences and maybe enlighten a few of you who think that Lolita and Cosplay are the same thing...

Is it? Not really, I just feel like talking about it..

First of all...Lolita is INSPIRED by certain period clothing but it is solely a modern style born out of our generation and no one elses' though it may take snips and ideas from several time periods (rococo, victorian, etc.) it has nothing to do with them at the same time since, again, it is solely INSPIRED not a complete facsimile as it should if it were a COSTUME. Cosplay on the other hand is a portmanteau of COSTUME and ROLEPLAY, hence "Cosplay" the main point is the portrayal of a character from any fandom which includes the accurate facsimile of the character's costume, personality, mannerisms and appearance.

YOU'RE A LOLITA AND COSPLAYER??? WHAT BLASPHEMY DOTH THOU SPEAKETH?!

As a lolita and a cosplayer I've experienced discrimination from both sides of the coin and I've always stood my ground in terms of my beliefs as to what should differentiate one from the other. There IS an extremely defined line as to what is cosplay and what is lolita but in terms of the local community here in the Philippines the misconceptions are so widespread that there are rampant terminologies and beliefs that make newbies of both cosplay and lolita believe that LOLITA IS A GENRE OF COSPLAY. So this blog entry is mostly my personal take as to what the differences are.

Firstly, Lolita is a unique style for each individual who is into the fashion. Even if you wear the same prints or the same style no one is quite the same because we put in unique touches of our own. With cosplay it's ACCURACY OR NOTHING. You cannot modify large parts of a character's design to suit your tastes. WHY? Because that would deviate from the character's design and that is a definite no-no in cosplay.

My Alice from American Mcgee's Alice cosplay. As a cosplayer I respect CANON designs and try to be as accurate as possible when portraying her. I cannot simply change things to express my individuality when in cosplay.

Lolita is not an act, there is no need to modify your behavior. You don't need to embody the "Sweet & innocent" perception most have in terms of what a lolita should be. I've met my fair share of bitches, sweethearts, psychos, plastics, true friends, geeks, tomboys, etc in the lolita community which to me just proves that lolita isn't a cosplay costume. It's a statement of individuality. With cosplay it's very different. You have to embody, modify your behavior and personify your character and if you can't then you're just some sorry loser in a costume, hence the PLAY part which stands for ROLEPLAY.

Lolita is not as mainstream in the Philippines as Cosplay, hence its misconception as a genre of cosplay. This is something I personally see, not as a problem but rather an opportunity to cure the misconception while it is young. This is why The Philippine Gothic and Lolita Group group was made in the first place, to spread the truth about what lolita is, a lifestyle and not a costume. It is also good that some of our members have the opportunity to speak out on local tv, magazines and websites because it's a way of spreading the word out. Cosplay is mainstream in the local scene but it is still as misconceived as Lolita. Why? because it is seen as a career path to stardom rather than a hobby, nuff said before I get too draggy on this.

Lolita can be worn on a daily basis, cosplay costumes cannot. It is only a matter of *Tim Gunn voice* "MAKING IT WORK", convenience and comfort for each individual. Some of us choose to wear it daily and some of us do not but that doesn't make those clothes cosplay costumes. On a personal level I cannot wear lolita on a daily basis because I'm an art major who works with materials that would damage and stain my lolita clothes, hence I choose to wear plains-clothes, it would be silly to insist on wearing lolita to me because I would be inefficient in my work if I did, the same way others do the same. We wear our dresses on special occasions, days we feel we can show our individuality and meets instead, that doesn't make it a costume the same way one would only wear a toga to graduation ceremonies, it is never referred to as "MY GRADUATION COSTUME" because if is special occasion wear and can only be worn on those occasions.

There are Lolita characters in cosplay but there are no cosplay characters in lolita. Case and point Miwako from ParaKiss, A majority of CLAMP designed characters, Rozen Maiden characters, Misa Amane of DEATHNOTE the list goes on... But you can never see a lolita say that they are a character, because they are their own individual person. You may see "Harry Potter inspired" or "Capitol Couture inspired" or anything fandom related BUT THE BOTTOMLINE REMAINS, they are their own individual selves, not a character.

Lolita is expensive like cosplay but the difference is, we see our clothes as an investment in a good wardrobe like any woman would see a good pair of heels as an investment for her daily footwear or for occasions it can be deemed acceptable wear. For cosplayers it is seen as a showcase of their skill, a way of giving homage to their characters and as a hobby.

And that's where it really boils down with Cosplay and Lolita... Cosplay is a HOBBY not a LIFESTYLE OR FASHION as opposed to Lolita which is to some a way of life. Cosplay to me is an escape from the daily grind and a chance to live out one's fantasies and a way of bringing to life one of your favorite characters.

Most of you are already wishing for my death me thinks :)))

TL/DR: Cosplay and lolita are two different things and shouldn't really be compared. Cosplay involves characterization and accuracy while Lolita is about individuality, elegance and being your own-self.

Geo Hurricane Grey Review

Whew... Super late review is super late. I've had a spot of trouble as of late, personally and emotionally hence the extreme delay of this review. BUT this will be one of my in-depth review (same as L-email) and hopefully you'd still be able to read the whole post even at its length.

So lemme begin with how I received this sponsorship. I do believe it was around February 20, Dull to Doll sent me a private message on my personal Facebook page asking if I ran a blog. I honestly answered them saying I do but I barely do post on it (since blogger can be an ass-butt when it came to photos and I usually have bouts with my ADD when writing blog posts). Come around the last week of March I received my package from Dull to Doll (unexpectedly since I wasn't given a TN or day to expect them on :B I love surprises!)...

Just a lil info on Geo Medical's lenses Hurricane Grey (HC105) before I begin, it has a 14.0mm diameter (but with a 15mm to 16mm effect based on my personal experience) with the lifespan of 6 months to 1 year depending on how you take care of your lenses. And now... this is where our review really begins XD

I received the package through XEND and was surprised to find that the item was lovingly packed in a paper bag with a note. As you can see in the photo it even has a pretty ribbon :). I'll share with you what the note says.

This is plus points on Dull to Doll's side because I LOVE it when sellers send custom notes to their customers, it adds that human touch to everything and I love collecting them :B Also, The note carries a very important message that EVERY lens user and first time lens owner should know, THAT YOU SHOULD SOAK YOUR LENSES IN NEW SOLUTION FOR 6 HOURS AND NOT USE THE SOLUTION IN THE BOTTLES. This is important so that you soak them in new solution because the solution that the lenses come in are for storage (they contain certain chemicals that are for the preservation of the lenses and prolong shelf-life). Your eyes will be irritated or worse if you use them right out of the packaging. It's best to soak them in fresh solution of your choice for 6 straight hours before use so that the lenses can absorb the new solution and expel the storage solution :)

After I opened the paper bag I was expecting the lenses to be covered in plain-old bubble wrap but instead I was surprised once again by ms. Val and how she's concern about her customer's happiness.

YES! It's a tiny round box that contains a bit of foam and my new lenses! As well as a new lens case! SWEET!!!!

So after using Geo medical's authenticity checking stickers and inputting the code into their webpage I was pretty sure that I was using authentic Geo lenses and that my eyes were safe. :) Just a tip, NEVER buy fake Geo lenses or cosmetics, you're just asking for trouble XD
I opened up the vials and up the lenses into their new lens case along with some new solution. I took the liberty of photographing them on a colored background and a white surface (in this case my doodle whiteboard XD)

On a white surface the "hurricane"/ swirly pattern is much more obvious

So after soaking them in new solution for six hours I decided to take an extra step in making the lenses a bit more comfy for me so i decided to soak them in AOsept deep cleansing solution, an item I'll be doing a review of soon. :B I've had slight bouts of irritation with GEO lenses before and I wasn't taking any chances with the new ones so I decided to "deep clean" them for 4 hours to at least give them a bit more time to "breathe" so to speak :))

So after another 4 hours of soaking in the solution I was ready to try them on! But first, MAKEUP TIEM!!!!

Hahaha XD Sorry for the shockingly ~~ugly~~ wasted photo, but this is before I put on my red wig. Anyways, this is what it looks like indoors with a fluorescent light as the main light source and without a wig. I chose to use bright colors to offset the grey and make it pop out a bit more ;)

>_< I haven't been able to take a photo of the lenses outdoors but I'll update this review once I do. But over-all it's one of the most beautiful and striking grey lenses that I own. They have that wow factor without looking too garish and fake. I'll be using them for my Bayonetta cosplay for sure!

Quality: 5/5- Absolutely wonderful and unique. I'm still a loyal I.Fairy user but at least now I know Geo's stuff is getting better.

Packaging: 5/5- Good packaging and I really appreciate the authenticity stickers. Best way to weed out fakes

Price: 4.5/5- They use to cost an arm and a leg a couple of years ago but seeing as how they're become relatively cheaper as of late. Yeah, I'd buy them.

Overall: 4.5/5- I absolutely love this brand!!! A recommended item in my books

Princess Mimi Geo Bambi Green Apple Review

Hi there folks! :B It's been a while since I've posted a review or anything about myself on this blog so I'll just mosey along and get on with the show...

I first heard of the Tsubasa Masuwaka designed lenses from my friends a few months back and they were absolutely GAGA over them. For those who don't know who Tsubasa is she's actually a pretty well known Gyaru model in Japan, although I am not a huge fan of Gyaru Fashion and the lifestyle I cannot deny the fact that I like their makeup style and certain nuances of their style. I also have a small girl-crush on Nonoka Iwata and Wakatsuki Chinatsu *blush blush*

So back to the lenses X_x

I bought a pair of them over at Japanesecandy.net :B I won't bother reviewing the shop since I've already done it twice (even if they don't really pay attention to small-time bloggers like me). :)) Plus I do these reviews just for the fun of it I guess.

The packaging is pretty good and I'm pretty surprised to get them in this condition since I'm not use to receiving lenses in boxes (other geo and even I.fairy doesn't have boxes) their labels and their bottles are also pretty impressive since they were compact and tightly sealed.

The lenses after I've soaked them for 6 hours and subjected them to deep cleaning :B

Comparing it to another green lens that they said had alot of promise of having bright colors, The I.Fairy Dolly+ Green is like comparing apples and oranges coz honestly the Princess Mimi lenses had alot of advantages. 1) it has a thicker limbal ring and a nice golden flecked center. 2) Princess Mimi lenses enlarge your eyes more than the Dolly+ ones do 3) By sheer size the Princess Mimi ones are bigger 4) The Princess Mimi ones give me more pay-off than the Dolly + ones :/ sadly...

Princess Mimi Geo Bambi Green Apple:

Quality: 5/5- Absolutely wonderful and suuuper pretty I think I'll be buying the grey ones too.

Packaging: 5/5- Lovely packaging and much more professional looking than most lens brands that just sell them in their vials.

Uniqueness: 4.5/5- If asked why I only gave it a 4.5 out of 5 it's because there's already a large market of lenses from different companies that produce similar patterned lenses with even more colors than the green, brown and grey that they offer.

Price: 4/5- 500 per lens is pretty ok and with shipping included it's a pretty fair price but I still hoped that I could of gotten a freebie or something since I've been a return customer of theirs for quite some time now.

Comfort: 5/5- The most comfy Geo lenses that I own up to date. I don't usually like Geo Lenses but this has renewed my faith in the company.

Overall: 4.5/5- I absolutely love these lenses and hope to get more of them soon.

L-Email Blonde Lolita Wig and Gwyshop Review

Hello once again my readers! I know it's been a while I've posted anything on my blog @_@ I've been absolutely swamped with sooo much work to do. Anyways~ Here's a review on my new lolita wig as well as Gwyshop who sold me the wig.

Disclaimer: This is not a paid review by L-Email or Gwyshop. I bought the wig on my own accord and I was not given any special treatment by either parties. So this is absolutely unbiased as possible. Also I don't own any of the homestuck GIFs. I only own the photos of myself :B

I ordered my wig via Gwyshop's Multiply account and through Multiply's shopping cart system which I thought was brilliantly convenient, quick and easy...

HELL YESSSSS!!! TRANSACTION COMPLETED!!!

Until I found out that it takes 24 hours for Multiply to clear your payments and to wire the payments to the actual sellers and give them the green light to ship yo' stuff. Even if you've paid in full and via the most convenient modes of payment (gcash, paypal, etc.) Multiply will still treat you the same way... SOOOO YEAAAHHH... If you're in a hurry to get your stuff it's better to contact them on their Facebook page. (links at the bottom)

Now on to the actual review! Lemme start with Gwyshop's packaging:

Custom packaging/ paper bag! Environmentally friendly and just SCREAMS cuteness!

The wig was actually sent via their courier (Xend) and was wrapped up in this paperbag which I found really endearing since it shows that the shop owner is really into personalizing and making sure their shop's orders are packed securely rather than outright stuffing it into the plastic shipping bags. What I noticed immediately was the fact that whole package was HEAVY!! And I do mean HEAVY!!!! O_o Is this wig really that massive? OMG!!!!

So one I got the wig out of the paper bag I immediately saw that there was a tear in the plastic wig bag XB it must of torn because of the SHEER BULK of this wig :)) Soooo glad to have that paper bag. It also came with a free wig cap! I soooo need that ><'

Now on to the wig itself:

First and foremost the wig is repackaged, YES, REPACKAGED by L-Email. L-Email doesn't produce their own wigs compared to Lucaille or Grand Young but rather it's a company that buys off other Taobao factories and repackages these items for their "brand". People often wonder why their wigs have doppelgangers of other brands. The most logical explanation I've come up with is that they share the same suppliers. This also supports the /CGL/ argument that *insert popular lolita wig brand name here* has a taobao supplier that makes their wigs for them. Anyways, moving on to much more important things..

I was actually pretty down before I got this wig so this was pretty much me trying to self-pacify my depression with shopping XD. The stock photos really don't give it ANY justice... and now you will see that neither do I... Hahaha!!!

Right out of the bag, no brushing, just plunked it on the wig head and gawked in delight. Ugly photo is ugleeehhhh

I know it came out really messy but that was before I brushed it and straightened it out a bit. >_< I couldn't really help it since I was really REALLY excited about it. The wig comes in 3 parts, First is the base wig and then two clip-ons, like most cosplay wigs with twintails these wigs are individually provided their own wig nets to avoid frizz and tangling. They're not super shiny but they have a nice alluring sheen to them that I think is just right.

Moving on, I initially I gave it an over-all look-see and noticed a few things.

The wig is smooth and manageable because it's made of Kanekalon fibers. It doesn't tangle as easily as I thought it would, especially since it's a curly wig and I am absolutely HORRIBLE with curly wigs >_<.

See? No Tag! As compared to Lucaille and other wig brands that have tags.

Oh yeah! They also have no brand tag as compared to the other wig brands that I own. :)) Go on and say I'm a conspiracy theorist over wigs XD I don't mind. *wears tinfoil hat*

So after brushing it out a bit I decided to go on ahead and use my friend Vanessa's wig teasing technique to fluff my wig up instead of going with the usual curled lolita wigs.

Instead of just fluffing up the twintails but also the base wig :B

So movin' on to the base wig. Most base wigs from taobao are really thin and try to compensate for it via the twintails, but with this L-email wig it's nothing like that. The base wig is thick with good, strong hair wefts attached to the lace inside the wig.

This wig is absolutely MASSSIIIIVEEEEEE after fluffying it up!!! The twintails on their own are also thick and wonderfully stable on their clam-shell clamps that are used to attach themselves to the base wig. They're perfectly stable once clipped on but are really heavy so be warned about them. You can switch up where you position the twintails but personally I like them on the sides, not too up-front and not too far in the back.

Soo yeah, that're pretty much all the info I can give you on this wig :D Now on to the scores!!!

L-email wigs:

Quality: 5/5- Absolutely wonderful and suuuper pretty :B I'll definitely start hording from this company.

Packaging: 4/5- I think they need to find bigger and stronger wig bags because stuffing a massive wig in such a tiny bag is bound to mess up such a nice product.

Uniqueness: Inconclusive- I can't really give my opinion on this because of the fact they don't make their own wigs but rather they repackage them.

Price: 4/5- For a nice thick wig most lolitas and cosplayer pay an arm and a leg for them. The item is relatively cheap compared to *insert major lolita wig brand here* but I question the possibility of it being cheaper if we find the original company that makes the actual wigs.

Overall: 4.5/5- I absolutely love this wig, aside from the fact that they're just repackaged taobao wigs, I'm pretty happy that I bought an L-Email brand wig :D

Will you be buying an L-Email brand wig again? ABSOLUTELY!

Gwyshop:

Communication: 5/5- Quick to respond and always courteous! They know every detail about the stuff they're selling and aren't afraid of showing it. They're also brutally honest about every detail about the item you're interested in as well as the processes that you go through to get your item. Without their explanation I wouldn't have known about Multiply's 24 hour clearing policy. So kudos for informing me!

Handling: 5/5- From the custom paper bag to the choice of courier as well as the packaging Gwyshop knows how to take care of their customer's items as well as make it look classy even if it's been man-handled via shipping. Extra brownie points for using eco-friendly packaging!

Pricing: 5/5- May it be their contact lenses or their cosplay and lolita wigs you'll be sure to get your money's worth with every item they sell. They also recommend items that you'll absolutely love based on your needs. Do you need bright looking contact lenses of a certain color? They'll recommend something that's within your budget without cheating you out of the quality you need.

Overall: 5/5- This shop's pretty much captured my attention as well as my heart. From their customer service to their items up for sale you'll surely love Gwyshop! You must be thinking, "Oh well, this must be a pretty biased review if she's giving the shop a 5/5" I assure you folks, I am being as brutally honest as I can as I've experienced EVERY KIND of online shop ownerin my 7 years of online shopping on various platforms, from the absolute pushover to the abusive shop owner, I would never back down from giving a brutal review of a bad shop.

Confessions of a Cosplay Hipster: Apparently I Look Like A Man... :B

When life gives you a perfect day I think the universe tries to make sure that your head doesn't get too big.

I've had a wonderful weekend (The 5th Philippine Cosplay Convention coupled with a sleepover) even if I were a bit sick with allergies, asthma and to top it off, my period :| I was extremely bloated because of my allergies that day to be honest ;A; so I admit, I wasn't in top form DX.

My costume wasn't perfect either, what with finding out there was a tear in one of my boots and the fact that one's circumference was smaller than the other (I'll be doing a review on that one soon), the arm warmers being short and the fact that the straps on my arm were constantly slipping down.

D: My straps were slipping down!!!

But as we they say in theater and on Broadway, "The show must go on!!!" So I trudged ahead and still went with it. We decided to rely on the straps on the boots instead of trying to zip it all the way to help it stay put since the circumference of the left one wasn't the same as the right one for some odd reason. I also tried to contour my face just to make it seem a little less bloated. Over-all I was comfortable but not 100% complacent with the end results that day.

My makeup look for that day was just as I had tried and tested over-and over from my trials and I decided to use my long black Jade wig instead of the brown one I was supposed to used just so I could really capture Alice's look.

Most of the time people came up to me, took my pics and complimented me on my over-all cosplay, so that made me feel that even with the shitty things happening it wasn't all that bad.

Well... Until I read this...

I think I should be flattered if this were a crossplay attempt to be mistaken as a guy but then again, I was cosplaying a girl, soooo yeaaahhhh... :<

It would have been a bit kinder of them to keep their opinions to themselves as their page IS PUBLIC and alot of people see their comments. I know I shouldn't be upset or as affected as I am right now but I've been really hurt by what they've said. I think they've never heard of the saying "If you can't say anything nice, don't say nothing at all"

I'm a very sensitive creature when it comes to being criticized for my looks. I know I am not really a beautiful girl nor am I that impressive. I'm pretty plain and quite insecure of my figure (38-28-36) to be honest. I just find it a little offensive to be compared to a man just because I wasn't in my top form. Yes, I know I'm fat! I also know that my face is absolutely unattractive! Do I need to be criticized on a public facebook page for being that way? Apparently I do!

So yes, I am quite depressed by this. I think I'll be going on a cosplay hiatus for a while. :<

Etude House's Wannabe the Etude Girl Contest!

So here I am blogging again! It's literally been a while since I updated this place and boy do I miss it! Firstly I just happen to join the contest out of being bothered by my friends (the Wannabe styling kit thingy was actually a Christmas gift I received)

This is my validated entry for the contest :D

Firstly I actually didn't plan on joining since I'm utterly pessimistic over "like" contests (I never win any and I find it to be more of a popularity contest than anything) but after much poking and prodding I decided to create a dolly-eyed look using the kit and other Etude House products to embody the "Play" look. To me the "Play" look was all about being bright-eyed and bushy tailed and looking absolutely fresh and ready for anything that may come. Although my outfit wasn't as colorful and fun as Dara's promo pics, the outfit I chose was something I considered "Playful" according to my personality, and most of my friends know that most of my wardrobe is composed of dark colors XD not counting my cosplay costumes that is.

So the Products I used for this look are the following:

For my face I used Etude House's Magic BB Balm and the gold highlighter in the Wannabe Styling Kit and the Peach colored blush/lip color on the palette as well for my blush. Then for the lip color I decided to keep it light and sweet-looking so I used the VIP Girl Lip concealer to help the color last longer as well as stand out then the Pink colored blush/lip color. For my eyes I used Proof 10 Eyeshadow Primer, Pink Velvet Shadow on the outer corner of the eye, Khaki Grey along the upper eye and the Purple shadow on the inner corner of the eye, White shadow as highlight then I finished it off with the Black Gel Liner. And for added measure I used my I.Fairy Super Crystal Blue contact lenses.

I honestly had to resist the urge to use my other non-Etude House products to make the look as I reaaaaalllyyyyy wanted to contour and highlight my face with my regular professional palette that I use for most of my makeup jobs.

Funny enough, I was the only person who submitted an entry to the contest. But I still tried to get as many people to "like" my entry just so I could follow the guidelines that were set. Although my friends constantly told me "You've got this in the bag, you're the only entry!!!" I was still worried that I would eventually get some competition since Etude House decided to extend entry submissions PAST the deadline.

But LO AND BEHOLD!!!!

So yeaaahhhh, I actually won!! 8D I thought that by the time of the category announcement they were bound to extend the deadline for entries AGAIN, I guess they finally decided not to do so and declare the winner so they can move along to the other categories.

Confessions of A Cosplay Hipster: On Cosplay Accuracy Part 1 of 2

WARNING: THIS ENTRY IS WRITTEN WITH ALL THE BIAS I CAN MUSTER. IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE REALITIES OF THINGS, GET THE FUCK OUT.

Imagine if someone drew a picture of Mickey Mouse. Obviously just for fun, it wasn’t a commission or an exercise, they just like Mickey Mouse and wanted to make some fan art. But they drew the nose drooping down, and instead of his characteristic round ears, they gave him small, pointy ears like a cat. Now imagine that when it’s pointed out that Mickey doesn’t look like that and it looks pretty bad, they respond by saying, “Well, it’s just for fun, not perfection, so shush!”

Is that an acceptable response?

Just because something is for fun doesn’t mean it can’t be critiqued. If we can freely critique people’s drawings or sculptures (then again, some people seem to think we can’t do that either!) then we can critique people’s cosplay, too.

It’s just another art form.

Half of the participation in a cosplay is the audience, otherwise cosplayers wouldn’t be showing it off in public and they’d just be doing costumes for themselves in their bedroom or something. If they go out in public, they’re opening themselves to public scrutiny and people are going to have opinions about it.

Honestly, I think trying to modify costumes to look sexy even if the character is supposed to look cute looks dumb and it’s kind of like dressing up like Link by putting an almost-green sock on your head and wearing fringy Minnetonka boots. Yeah, it’s vaguely close, but not very Linky and it looks ridiculous. The point of a cosplay is to dress up like a character, and making it look bad and only partially recognizable doesn’t make sense and certainly doesn’t seem very fun. At best it looks cheap and at worst it looks lazy.

So here are some of my tips concerning cosplay and how to choose your character...

1) Anyone can cosplay. But just because you can doesn't mean you should.

You must be wondering what I mean by that, basically I'll be splitting the contents into several pieces as to describe what is entailed here.

a) Consider your body type and the character you want to cosplay.

Are you on the hefty side but want to cosplay an overly-sexualized and/or sexy character? I'm so sorry but I suggest trying to find a character that doesn't bring out the flaws of your body, but if you insist on doing this character don't start crying about being made fun of. On the up side doing some modifications to a character's designs may help you, I've seen a pretty good Ashe cosplay that was done by a plus size girl and it look absolutely beautiful, basically I'm just saying that you should be realistic with your body image. If you want an example of what NOT to do... Look up Pixyteriyaki on Deviant art... Nuff said *shivers*

Are you a "well-endowed" individual but interested in cosplaying a male character? Too lazy to bind or wear a compression shirt? I suggest a character that would fit you a bit more, boys don't have boobs now do they? Always consider how the character looks, I know binding is painful (coming from a girl with a 38B sized pair of mammary glands) but we all have to make sacrifices to pull male characters off flawlessly. I suggest doing some research on "Drag-Kings" I basically learned most of my crossplay know-how from reading various articles on the matter of pulling off male characters.

Are you a Male who wishes to pull off a flawless female cosplay? Too lazy to tuck, pluck and wax? Again I suggest re-considering another character, preferable of your gender if you cannot be bothered with these simple formalities, girls are supposed to be pretty and very "feminine", no? There's no place in the crossplaying world for boys who can't pull girls off but insist on doing so. WE DO NOT WANT THINGS TO SCAR US FOR LIFE. research on Drag Queens and get yourself SOME RU PAUL GOODNESS for extra credit!

Are you a flat-chested girl insisting on cosplaying a *ahem* well endowed character? Don't want to use push-up bras and silicone boob pads? Then I suggest doing some adorable and cute DFC (that stands for Delicious Flat Chest XDDDD) characters, lolis or even some really kick-ass crossplays (No need to bind! Win-Win!) but if you insist on doing so get yourself some boob and butt silicone fillers as well as a good push-up bra. Try to make them look natural than going for HENTAI BOOB-MONSTER SIZED BREASTS!!!!! DO NOT WANT!!!!

Basically these examples are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to body-types. Don't let me or anyone dictate what you should and shouldn't cosplay, just remember that there are ramifications to your actions, ok?

b) Consider the personality of the character you will cosplay

Lol. As part of the "Cosplay CODE OF AMADEO" that I personally follow here is one of thee most important rules that I follow. TRY TO READ/KNOW YOUR CHARACTER! Character-Bastardization is a definite NO-NO!

Is Sakura Kinomoto a emo-weepy bitch? Is Dante from Devil May Cry the type of character who'd do "Moe-Moe Kyun" poses? Is Sasuke the type to weep like a little girl? Is John Egbert a Yaoi-gay-boi? The last part, for those familiar with Homestuck would hit the biggest issue I have, he isn't, he's blatantly expressed his sexuality as, as fans put it "NO HOMO". But most WEEABOOs and Herpa-Derpa "cosplayers" would break and bastardize the character. Why? It's probably because they DON'T KNOW CRAP ABOUT THE CHARACTER. You don't post "Hey guys who should I cosplay?" and take the first suggestion written there, consider if you know the character or even LIKE the character to try to even attempt to do a cosplay of said character. I know, I'm ranting, but I'm trying to make a point, If you like a character and consider cosplay as a way to bring homage to a character then do your best to bring that character to life but also be selective of the personality traits that you would mimic which is to say that just because your character is a douchebag doesn't mean you need to be one, pick another less insulting trait and try that. Wearing a wig and costume doesn't automatically make you a cosplayer, proper research into your character's personality, signature poses (that work for you) and your effort to make the character come to life are essential to the cosplayer's arsenal.

Take my advice and READ, RESEARCH AND UNDERSTAND your chosen character. Because I don't see the point of cosplaying a character you don't even know or like.

c) Consider your skill level and resources to do the cosplay you've chosen

Not everyone is automatically made to be top-tier cosplay material. All of us have started in shit-tier standards (Hell, I started in creepy-weeaboo standards). I'm pretty sure that older people in the cosplay community will tell you their "In my days.." stories and you should never ignore their wise advice on the matter, they aren't "cosplay veterans" for nothing. Even if some of them come off as elitists most of them really mean well, but if you absolutely cannot get any help from people around you there's always internet tutorials to the rescue, remember, GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND! Now, in terms of skill it is now up to your nimble fingers to make your costume. Although I don't make most of my costumes (I've commissioned most of them, but who hasn't really? I'm pretty much in the intermediate level I guess) I do make my own props and paint on details needed to my costume, I am absolutely helpless with the sewing machine. But if you do get your things commissioned, always remember to CREDIT THE PERSON!!! DON'T BE A CREDIT-STEALING-SNAKELADY!!!! *winkwinknudgenudge*

As for resources, now a days you can find shops on FB and Multiply that sell wigs, contacts, etc. Just ask around first if the shop is reliable and READ FIRST BEFORE ASKING!

I.fairy CutiePie Dolly+ Lens review

I'm honestly just trying to revive this place since I'm too lazy to update my posts here...

I decided to post another contact lens review, mainly of the Grey CutiePie Dolly+ lenses by I.fairy. I bought these lenses out of the random urge to join a photo-contest hosted by the shop I bought them from.

So....

I compiled the photos into just one collage as not to consume too much space on this blog. :B On to the review!!!

I first encountered Cutiepie Dolly+ lenses when the first pre-orders on Japanesecandy came up and I was absolutely in love with the photos of the model wearing the grey colored ones. Hence when they were in-stock I decided to purchase them on my birthday hence this review. (I also just had to take photos with the bottle, the packaging is absolutely adorable ♥)

Enlargement: 9/10

I did an enlargement comparison of the Grey Cutiepie Dolly+ lens with my favorite PartyEyez Hanabi Red to see if it would compete against it. As you can see in my photos it doesn't really look that enlarged compared to the Hanabi Red which is one of the lenses that I own that gives off the best enlargement.

Design and Color: 10/10

If you're a fan of natural looking but stunningly colored lenses then this lens brand is for you. It looks so lovely on most people (I have friends who own the same brand but in different colors) and doesn't look too much like overly-garish or fancy lenses. To be completely honest I prefer these over most cosplay lenses in the market since they can be used for both normal and cosplay wear. It's also perfect for special occasions where you want to stand out in or everyday use, this lens will not only turn heads, it will DEFINITELY BREAK NECKS!!! :D

Comfort: 9/10

I've worn these lenses to the mall and an art gallery even more than once and to be completely honest I barely feel they're there at times. But they do tend to dry up a bit when worn hence I must pack some eye drops to make sure that I don't cause any irritation to my eyes. I have tried wearing them for a prolonged period of time (around 3-5 hours give or take) but I recommend that people who want to try these lenses to wear them at a maximum of 4 hours so as not to risk things, better safe than sorry right? :3

Overall: 9/10

If not for the dryness and my personal preference for eye enlargement effects the Grey Cutiepie Dolly+ it would have been one of the perfect lenses for me. But in overall terms of performance and style I'd give it a 9/10. I recommend it for girl who want that special but not too loud lens that looks super cute and vivid.

Extra review:

Japanesecandy has once again exceeded my expectations when it came to their customer service, not only were they prompt with answering my questions, they were also very much honest about their product, citing to me that they couldn't give me a fair opinion on the item since they have yet to see it in action. I love their honesty over the product, something most sellers seem to neglect these days just to sell an item or two. Also I'm amazed that instead of waiting the usual 2-days for the item to get here (since we are from different regions of the country) my recent orders only took a day to get to my doorsteps. So, yeah.... Thanks Japanesecandy for the wonderful service and awesome products! More power to you!!!

Pirate Royalty: A photoshoot

Pirates have always been my favorite subject matter next to the Mafia and Steampunk. ~~Witches/Witch-boys don't count since I live the life of one.~~ So I decided around November last year to bother Jaja into teaming up with me for a photoshoot inspired by one of the more obscure sub-styles of lolita. And boy do I LOOOOVE that decision :D

Everything was bloody-red <3 I had not seen the place before and was in utter awe (we all were actually) of how everything looked. It was a cornucopia of decadence and beauty that I was a giggling mass of fangirl all day long. The entire feel of the place was a literal time warp to another period in history.

To be honest this is my first photoshoot in lolita since I'm not really someone who wears it on a daily basis but rather on occasion since the fashion is not really suited for my lifestyle (I'm taking up B.A. Fine Arts and is usually surrounded by materials that will stain cloth) so this is really a dream come true.

Jaja stunned me in her dress since I had no idea how it looked. It's an utter pleasure to work with her as well as Liac, whose bouncy personality I adore as well. She's gorgeous in this dress, no?

Hahaha, Sorry about that I felt like typing that up XDDD I swear I look so derp, I hadn't slept that day and had only eaten a cup of instant ramen and a glass of juice, bad luck was clinging on me like a 2nd skin and the day started off really bad >_<, I think the presence of Jaja, Liac and Chaw kinda warded the bad-luck off XD I look horribly derp in this photo.

And finally, a photoshoot would not be complete if there weren't ~~photos on stairs~~ gratifying shots of gorgeous location plus models. :3

Super Crystal Blue Review

Hi there folks! I decided to finally do my review on the Super Crystal Blue Lenses from Japanesecandy.net 's very own Party Eyez/I.Fairy Super Crystal Blue. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making a review of it.

I.Fairy Super Crystal Blue in natural light

It may not be obvious to some but I REAAAALLY L-O-V-E these lenses. Sadly they were stolen from my bag recently when I escorted my mother. Along with my Etude House Miss Tangerine "Follow Me" Tint, 250 Pesos and my Miss Tangerine Dara Sticker that was also inside my bag that day (I was planning on giving it to a fellow Dara lover :<)

I recommend this lens for someone who has dark colored eyes because it's really vivid, I have really dark brown eyes but these lenses not only help to bring out the vividness of my red hair but also make my eye area (which is plagued really badly with dark circles) much more brighter than other lenses.

I compared it first with my normal eye, to be honest I was walking around my house looking for camera's charger and my mother kept on asking if the enlargement was really normal for circle lenses. But at times it's not really as noticeable compared to my other Pair of I.Fairy lenses. I then compared it to Geo's SF-16 Cosplay Lens it does do a better job at enlargement but not as much as the I.Fairy Hanabi Red, which has become my personal favorite pair of lens from the Party Eyez line. It might be due to the large outer ring that the Hanabi Red has but it does enlarge my eyes to a favorable extent.

Now for my favorite part, a comparison with my I.Fairy Hanabi Red <3 which I'll also be doing a review next time :3

I.Fairy Super Crystal Blue compared to I.Fairy Hanabi Red

I think that for a 16.20mm lens the Party Eyez/I.Fairy Super Crystal Blue is much more comfortable than any of the Geo Lenses I own. It's probably due to the higher water content, which was pointed out to me JapaneseCandy as compared to Geo's that seem to always irritate my eyes.

But with the Party Eyez Lens I sometimes worry that I may have dropped them accidentally due to their "Barely-there" sensation. Personally I think that the Hanabi Red brings a but more enlargement but the Super Crystal Blue is a much more natural looking lens compared to the Hanabi Red.

The Nitty-Gritty Breakdown:

Enlargement: 8.5/10

Color/Design: 10/10

Comfort: 10/10

Overall: Overall They're awesome lenses that I think I'll be buying more often from now on. I also love that these lenses are now available locally through the internet and are being sold by a very accommodating and friendly seller.

The Vampire Appears.

So I finally decided to take some time off my busy sched to upload some photos of my derpy self. This is particularly interesting to me as it was a photo of my Vampire Armand inspired hairstyle last wednesday, which was my little brother's graduation. XD Luckily I look very much decent in this look, unlike my other makeup looks even on normal days.

I'm wearing a pair of Party Eyez Lenses/I.Fairy lenses in Super Crystal Blue, I'll be posting a review of it along with my review of the Hanabi Red after I can get good shots of my eyes.

The makeup I used for this look was as follows:

Etude House's BB Cream Magic "Good-bye Trouble" in refreshing.

Nichido's Final Powder in "Pink Glow" put on with their kabuki brush

Etude House's Golden Ratio Face Glam in Gold as an eyeshadow primer and facial higlighter

Etude House's Golden Ratio Designing Conte and Contouring kit in gold for highlighting and contouring my cheeks as well as covering my double chin

Nichido's True Colors Collection Powder Blush in "Peach Glow"

Eyes:

Etude House's Code B cream liner in "Secret Black"

Etude House's Designing Vitcara as my mascara

A pair of Saizen Gyaru-ish eyelashes to make the eyes pop

And Etude's LUCIDarling eyeshadow palette in "Golden Brown"

Lips:

Mary Kay's Lip Masque and Lip Balm before application as I had really dried up lips

Etude's VIP girl Miss Tangerine lipstick in "OR205" which I absolutely love for a semi-nude lip to peachy lip look

And Etude's "woo~! baby" lip plumper to keep it moisturized all night.

Sadly I really wanted Etude's Sweet Shower lips in Tangerine but only the pink version IS THE ONLY ONE THAT'S AVAILABLE AT SM FAIRVIEW which I didn't like :/

I think that the look was still a bit mute for a formal event that was going to last all night. Add up that I was the Graduation Ball's Emcee and I looked soooo plain :<

My first blog entry here feels a bit hollow. I do wish to make it much more meaningful but I am in no such mood right now as my mood has been thoroughly spoiled by one such individual. I only wish to convey that this blog is now officially open for all the peering eyes to see.
