The Mayhem Horror Film Festival 2013

Mayhem Horror Film Festival is one of the many current cutting edge events that will bring to the screens the very best in our favourite genre; including both film and television with a showcasing of the best selection of shorts.

The festival will run from Thursday 31^st October to Sunday 3^rd November 2013, at the Broadway Cinema, in Nottingham; a great start to Halloween. Now the festival is in its ninth year it promises to bring the audiences gut-wrenching and spine tingling horror. Steven Sheil director of Mum and Dad (2008), who runs the festival (with fellow Nottingham filmmakers Chris Cooke and Gareth Howell) states that there should be 16 films as well as a selection of shorts for us all to enjoy.

"They'll all be preview screenings; they won't have been released in the UK yet, and some of them won't be released until next year."

And it's not just horror at Mayhem. Steven states that

"We make it quite broad. It's not just ultra-gory stuff; its ghosts to splatter films and everything in between, plus sci-fi and cult. And these are films from around the world. We try to give a snapshot of what's happening in the world of horror and cult cinema at Mayhem every year."

He adds:

"We do TV as well. A few years ago we had the cast and crew of Being Human here to talk about the series and introduce the new one. That was quite a big hit."

The event attracts around 2000 people with some attendees - regulars – who will book a holiday off work to attend. There will be premieres, new releases and even previews to cult classics. And of course we can’t forget to mention the special screenings, breakthrough shorts and a host of special guests - usually directors and producers – with a questions and answers session to ask them all you would like to know about their horror film.

This will be a very unique experience- one which I will gladly go through. Mayhem will offer some exciting viewing for the audiences attending across the four days of horrific madness and mayhem.

I have been lucky enough to be given a day pass granting me the opportunity to attend the festival on Saturday 2^nd of November 2013.

I am genuinely looking forward to seeing what new horror will disturb and excite me. With previous films such as American Mary (which is personally one of my favourites at the minute), there is a lot to be expected. Rush 2013 Directed by Ron Howard

I am starting the MA in Horror and Transgression next week and I am lucky enough to be going to a special screening of Ron Howard’s Rush as part of my induction. Two-time Academy Award winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon) teams once again with two-time Academy Award-nominated writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen) on Rush.

Rush is produced by Andrew Eaton (A Mighty Heart, The Killer Inside Me), Eric Fellner (Les Misérables, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Brian Oliver (Black Swan), Peter Morgan, Academy Award winner Brian Grazer (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind) and Ron Howard. Howard has assembled a stellar crew of behind-the-scenes talent including Academy Award-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire, The Last King of Scotland), production designer Mark Digby (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, Oscar-winning editors Dan Hanley and Mike Hill (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind), costume designer Julian Day (Nowhere Boy, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, The Dark Knight Rises).

Set in the 1970’s; the golden age of Formula One, Rush portrays the re-creation of the exhilarating true story of the merciless rivalry between Formula One racers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth of The Avengers, Thor) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl of Inglourious Basterds, The Bourne Ultimatum). It is the greatest rivalry the world of sports has ever witnessed; handsome and charming English playboy Hunt and his brilliant and methodical Austrian opponent Lauda struggle with the pressure that builds in both their personal and working lives. The rivals push themselves to breaking point in both the psychological and physical sense; if you make one mistake, you die. There is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error.

Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy) and Alexandra Maria Lara (The Reader) co-star in the epic action-drama as Suzy Miller and Marlene Lauda, the loves of James and Niki’s lives who watched and feared as the men rocketed toward possible death.

Well I can’t wait to see if this film is as hot as the critiques say. A formula one story with heart; not just for petrol heads. This long awaited biopic will be captivating audiences and giving them an insight into the world of F1.

So here is the follow up for Thanatomorphose from director Eric Falardeau; the new feature length horror to hit our screens was welcomed at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival 2013.

As we know from the last article I wrote Laura tries to make the most of her life. She has a boyfriend that has no interest in her other than for her body and she continually feels used and empty inside. Two events take place that twist her world into a spiral of events. She meets a charming man Julian who she believes may give her the attention she deserves; then she begins to notice strange patches on her body and Laura’s nightmare only gets worse when she starts to rot from the inside – out. Her teeth fall out and she has a constant odour of a decomposing corpse. Laura must come to terms with the fact that she is trapped in this unreversable rotting corpse; her nightmares only just beginning.

Thanatomorphose is disturbing singular cinematic experience that causes a decent with Laura to hell. Eric’s film takes us to the brink of abjection with unbearable scenes that test all the senses. As Fantasia states

“With this Kafkaesque tale of transformation, the talented filmmaker juggles the sublime and the transgressive, with superior results. While the film has its share of shockingly violent scenes, it’s no mere exploitation flick, but rather a corrosive meditation on sexuality, solitude and our complex relationships with our own bodies”. (FantasiaFestival.com) Kayden Rose who plays Laura throws herself into a very demanding role with such commitment and passion it shows. She projects Laura’s pain well for the viewer to experience. Thanatomorphose has been labelled as the most shocking film of the year so far. Tell me what you think?

A Dark Souvenir (2013) is a new horror film Written and Directed by Mathew Pillscher

In this new uncanny addition to the independent horror genre Pillscher gives us a creepy take on the end of the honeymoon period. Taking a trip to kick off their married life; Frieda and John Golden embark on an amazing holiday to Scandinavia to celebrate their marriage in honeymoon style. They are a happy and fun-loving couple; their life was perfect and they were certainly content but the coming events work to change that.

Whilst visiting an old island Sea Fort just outside of Copenhagen, Denmark; The Trekroner Søfort (Søfort means "Sea Fortress." Trekroner Søfort means "Three Crowns Sea Fortress." to be exact; John becomes very ill and starts to deteriorate further when they arrive home to the U.S. a few days later. Frieda becomes ever more paranoid that they did not just bring some virus home; but something else more sinister.

Their perfect life changes when they arrive home from their honeymoon. The couple both start to experience bouts of illness further and memory loss that is continually unexplained. Frieda keeps seeing someone in their house but she can never catch them. John thinks she is hallucinating and makes her feel silly; but John his having strange visionary dreams which are filled with this sinister hooded figure. John will not admit his own encounters with the strange to Frieda or even himself. So now they both seem to be hallucinating a faceless hooded figure that is ever present in their marital home. Something seems to have latched onto the couple; pushing its way into their life. But what have they brought back with them?

The couple must struggle to find the truth of what they brought back. Frieda is an architectural photographer so she decides to take pictures throughout the house in the hope of finding something; anything that could explain the strange happenings. John starts to research online about the old island fort as he notices a mark on his body that is the same as a marking he saw when they visited the old fort. So what exactly happened to them at Trekroner Søfort? What came home with them?

With their insanity hanging on a thread, the newly-weds must fight for their reality before they come face to face with the evil an sinister presence that has been hunting them; in turn being born into their lives forever.

"I've always loved scary movies. I think it's the nature of feeling like you're being hunted and very afraid, your adrenaline starts pumping, and at the same time you are enjoying yourself in this controlled and safe environment. Needless to say, I've always wanted to make a horror movie and add my own contribution to the genre...

...I also love artsy movies, and movies with strong characters, tension between them, and a little bit of humour. The best scary movies contain all these elements. I don't usually like movies with lots of gore or horror movies that show everything. I think some mystery and some things left to your imagination make them scarier. I want A Dark Souvenir to illustrate that you can still make a great horror movie without buckets of blood, monster masks, CGI, showing all the violence, or sexist, reactionary writing. I'm a huge fan of Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Kubrick, Ken Loach, and Ti West. Although this will be a horror film, I hope it's also a drama that even people who don't like horror can appreciate. I hope the characters are real and relatable. I also hope to show there's a space for creative storytelling with little-to-no budget, and that with the right community support we can keep independent film alive!"

Brian Darnell (played by Stuart Horobin) has a twisted obsession with Dolls, Porcelain dolls to be precise. Now he is a grown man his obsessions begin to take a twisted and dominating turn. His wife Anna (played by Anna Tarsh) is vulnerable in the relationship and he dominates her into living within his own twisted fantasy. She is beaten and tormented by her psychotic husband and is forced to live with his doll infatuation.

With the relationship based on nothing but violence and fear we see the hold Brian has on Anna. The couple move into a new house and a new neighbourhood.

When Sharon Williams (Renee Molloy) and Penny Stevens (Carol Cummings), two of their new neighbours (of the nosey kind) discover the not so perfect home and Brian’s world unravels. Secrets do not stay secret in this town so his sadistic ways become known and exposed.

When confronted a very brief but violent struggle ensues between the group and Brian’s domination comes to an end.

The three women are thrown into turmoil when stood over Brian’s corpse. The devastating and dramatic events following, sends the women’s lives spiralling out of control.

Standing over the corpse the women need to decide their next move. But they were not the only eyes to witness the murder. Will they find out the truth before it’s too late?

Note: This film contains elements of physical Violence and draws upon a very touching subject which younger viewers may find disturbing.

Porcelain Presence is the debut feature film from Emily E. Bibb and Chris Jay. And what a Debut! I for one will be awaiting the release.

Neil A. Johnson (Director of Photography) stated that: "It's the first chance I've had to really put the camera through its paces in a production environment and I must say it rose to the challenge beautifully capturing stunning images without any hiccups."

The cast for the film includes Margot Mount as Heidi Slater; Tom Charnock as Tobias Danzig; Darren Harris as Jeff, Lee Halden as JP and Joey the Cat as himself.

J.P is a very ambitious film maker who has talked his team; the lovely Heidi Slater, Jeff the sound recorder and Tobias the psychic medium, into making a Most Haunted/Blair Witch style television program at ‘Netherwood House’. The only problem is… JP has a more sadistic night planned. Shall I say DIY snuff movie?

When they arrive at ‘Netherwood House’ they witness some strange happenings. The building is said to be the 13^th most haunted house in Britain, so the team head there in the hope of finding some real paranormal activity. JP’s motives are more sinister than is let on and the rest of the team have no clue until it is too late. The Magick will have consumed them all as it surrounds ‘Netherwood House’.

Writer, Director and Producer J.P. Bankes-Mercer gives us a little thrill ride in this Brit Horror. J.P. stated: "I grew up on horror films, the first time I heard the title 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' I was terrified but hooked" and” It's been a nauseous journey cutting it together and getting into that head space, I'm editing a film from a psycho's point of view. I have to keep reminding myself that I haven't actually killed anyone."

Well let’s just hope it stays that way JP! Keep the horror coming though!

With a great film crew the film is on its way to release. Untitled Horror Film (UHF) is currently in post-production and will be hitting the world festival circuit later on - 2013.

Meanwhile, the exhausted and terrified group of players are all seated with their hands bound as sweat and tears drip down their faces. The group has all been injured from playing a round of the vicious game and the reality of death looms in the air. A heavy stench of forthcoming pain sits at the forefront of everyone’s minds. They fearfully look at Derik who continues to walk around the circle of players as if he is taking an easy Sunday afternoon stroll. Tony is in a state of disbelief and shock when he is approached by Derik.

DERIK (CONT’D)
Back to you, Tony. Truth or dare?

TONY
Fuck (beat) Either one really fucking blows (beat). Dare.

DERIK
I…dare…you

Derik walks towards his bag and retrieves a large combat knife. It glistens in the reflection from the light. Tony’s eyes widen as he takes a good look at the jagged knife.

TONY
(panicked) What the fuck?

DERIK
To…cut…both of your nipples off.

TONY
(shocked) What?!

DERIK
I don’t think you need me to repeat the instructions or the repercussions if you fail in completing
your dare.

Derik smirks as he looks at Tony, who tries to shy away from Derik’s twisted demeanor.

DERIK (CONT’D)
It’s like ripping off a band-aid, the quicker you do it, the faster it’s over.

Tony looks at the knife on the floor. He slowly picks it up and his hands begin to shake. He starts to profusely sweat and rock back and forth. His nervous system is fried and his vision starts to
blur. Derik points the gun at Tony’s head.

DERIK (CONT’D)
Don’t do anything but the dare. You remember the rules.

Tony looks at his teammates to his left and right. His heart pounds inside of his chest as he stands there with the knife in his hand.

DERIK (CONT’D)
(impatient)
Don’t look at them! They have nothing to do with your dare!

Tony begins to stand up, but Derik interjects.

DERIK (CONT’D)
Sit back down, there is no need to stand. After all, if you’re standing and you pass out after completing your dare, you could hurt yourself. We can’t have that, can we? We want everyone to play for as long as they can.

Tony sits back down, releasing a frustrated sigh as he begins to panic and breath heavily.

TONY
I can’t fucking do it.

DERIK
You know what the alternative. One!

Derik cocks the gun hammer back.

Tony exhales quickly and rolls his shoulders.

DERIK
(yelling)
Two!

Tony starts to lift his shirt up. He places the blade to the outer edge of his nipple and lightly presses into his chest before letting up on the pressure he was applying.

DERIK
(yelling)
Three!

TONY
(panicking)
Okay! Okay!

A single tear streams down Tony’s face as he hesitates. Tony looks up at the gun aiming at him from across the circle of players and he puts the tip of the knife back on his chest while grabbing his nipple with his other free hand.

DERIK
(yelling louder)
Four!

His hand starts to jitter as he shakes his head back and forth, uttering “fuck” as he cannot believe what he is about to do. His entire forehead is gleaming from the light reflecting off the sweat that has completely drenched him. After another moment’s pause; SLICE – Tony pierces his nipple with the knife and immediately removes the blade.

TONY
(yelling and panting)
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

Tony thrusts the blade into the other side of his nipple and screams in pain. He gets the knife to penetrate the other side of his nipple, like a sewing needle. Blood pours out of his wound and he whimpers as he cuts into his flesh. His girlfriend Michelle screams as she looks on at her boyfriend damaging his body. Tony starts to move the blade in a saw-like motion and he continues to whimper and scream intermittently. More blood trickles down his chest and seeps into the top of his pants. The knife gets to the end of his nipple and he slides the knife out. Tony takes his other hand and peels the nipple from his chest, removing it. It wiggles like a soggy pepperoni. Tony drops it on the ground and clasps his hand over his mouth out of sheer shock. After a moment of nervously biting his knuckles, he drops his hand to his side.

TONY (CONT’D)
(whimpering)
That’s it. I’m only doing one. You’re not getting the other one!

DERIK
Sorry, I’m not interested in doing anything halfway, and you shouldn’t either. Our fans want the full show. The other nipple is coming off. And if you continue to waste my time -

Derik aims the gun back at Tony’s head.

DERIK (CONT’D)
Then you are going to permanently sit out.

Tony shutters as he reaches for the knife.

From Small Town Girl Productions comes Truth or Dare, Jessica Cameron’s directorial debut. This gritty and terrifying new instalment for the horror genre ensures the audience will gasp in shock and awe. Truth or Dare is said to be a movie made by horror fans, for horror fans.

As well as co-writing the script and producing the film with writer/producer Jonathan Higgins and producer Buz Wallick; Cameron also stars in the film; along with Devanny Pinn, Heather Dorff, Ryan Kiser, Brandon Van Vliet, Shelby Stehlin, and Jesse Wilson. So who are the cast and the characters? Well here is the lowdown on the cast and their characters:

Jessica Cameron is Jennifer Collins, a strong-willed and introverted girl who is highly educated. She is an actress from Ontario and has appeared in over 70 projects ranging from feature films, television shows, and commercials. She is known for last year’s killer Santa slasher “Silent Night,” which was helmed by Steven C. Miller, the Roger Corman produced “Camel Spiders,” which is currently airing on the SyFy Network, and the ever popular “Mr. Hush” which is on Netflix instaview and can be found at numerous Redbox locations. She is also known for her role in season 2 of the TLC network’s hit show “Brides of Beverly Hills” which averaged between 1 and 2 million views per episode.

Devanny Pinn is Courtney Steele, a promiscuous girl who flirts with everyone around her, male or female. She is from Houston, Texas and is known for her roles in such films as “The Black Dahlia Haunting,” as well as the award-winning “Vivid,” and the sci-fi thriller “Area 51 Confidential” (available now at Wal-Mart) which she also co-wrote.

Heather Dorff is playing the role of Michelle Lucas, a small-town girl with a big heart who puts her friend’s needs in front of her own. She is a Chicago-based actress who got her start with the award winning movie “What They Say” which she starred in, narrated, produced, and wrote. She will next be seen in “Epitaph: Bread and Salt” as well as the Brian Troxell film “Intrusive Behaviour” which she co-starred in with fellow actress Jessica Cameron.

Ryan Kiser is Derik B. Smith, a passionate individual who is so far removed from society that he lives in his own state of delusion. He can be seen portraying Charles Manson in the film “Lie” as well as acting in “I’m Jesus Mommy” and “Potpourri” with fellow actors Brandon Van Vliet and Jessica Cameron.

Brandon Van Vliet is Tony Lockhart, a dim-witted party boy who’s only goal in life is to find the next free beer. He is from Minneapolis, Minnesota and known for such films as “Potpourri,” “In Harm’s Way” and the upcoming “Insectula!”

Shelby Stehlin plays the role Ray Austin; former high school sports star that is still has a hot temper at times. Very business-minded and well educated.

Jesse Wilson plays the role of John Moore; the charming and quick-witted leader of the group.

Grae Drake plays the role of Bobbi Craig; a larger than life talk show host with very animated mannerisms.

Producer/Co-Writer Jonathan Higgins is a writer from Tucson, AZ. After graduating from the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona he was signed with “Gandolfo Helin Literary Management.” His first book, tentatively titled “The Masquerade: The Truth Lies Behind the Mask” will be out later this year. Jonathan’s first script was optioned called “Treechures,” a horror-comedy creature feature set in 1985. He co-wrote his latest script, “Truth or Dare” which he is also producing with actress/producer Jessica Cameron.

Buz Wallick is from Paradise, CA. After making a leap of faith and moving to Los Angeles, Buz started his career in filmmaking and has done everything from being a production assistant to producing feature films. He is known for producing the “Thirsty” as well as co-producing the feature “The Black Box.”

Daniel Krige was born in Cape Town, South Africa but grew up in Australia. He is the script consultant on “Truth or Dare” and is known for writing, directing, and acting in various films. He is best know for directing and writing the bloody extravaganza “Inhuman Resources.”

Jessica states that:

I’m phenomenally excited to tackle my very first film as a producer and co-writer. If only I could find a director who wasn’t scared of the material. After all, when it comes to the torture porn genre, is there really such a thing as ‘too far’ or ‘too much?’

Six students become internet sensations when they film truth or dare videos with a violent theme; but they all seem to have something to hide.

The film eludes Saw style gornography or torture porn. The events slowly become unhinged and the truth can kill you; it’s not just a game anymore! This film is unpredictable, with twists in the right places and alluring visual art for the horror and gore fans. Truth or Dare will have you squeaking in your seats.

British Indie Horror cinema is coming through thick and fast now; this will be one to watch out for.

Mama (2013) From Guillermo Del Toro By Lea Weller

So here it is on DVD; the great Guillermo Del Toro production Mama, directed by Andy Muschietti. Wow what a film. I blubbered from start to finish and I never do that. I bought it on DVD last Monday and I was dying to watch it again. I can’t believe it actually choked me up worse at home than it did when I went to see it at the local cinema.

Mama is a supernatural horror that tells the story of two very young girls being cared for by a broken hearted entity. It shows how they ended up with Mama and the horrific events afterwards. It transpires that she had committed suicide with her baby in the 1800’s and she was longing to be a mother once again. There is a great sadness that defines Mama and what she really is and this emotional attachment is more powerful than any scene in the film. In Del Toro’s masterpieces he often sympathises with the monsters more than any of the other characters.

The film starts as we hear on the news about how a financial meltdown is causing havoc. We follow one man Jeffrey (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Annabel (Jessica Chastain) go into panic killing his business partners and estranged wife. After he kidnaps his 2 young daughters aged around 1 and 3 he finds a cabin in the woods empty and he settles in to hide.

Realising what he has done he attempts to kill his 3 year old. This is where Mama steps in. You automatically fall in the love with her after she saves the young child. This is where the sympathising starts. Victoria played by Morgan McGarry and her baby Sister Lily played by Maya Dawe are waiting in their room for their mother to take them to school. In a panic he rushes them into a car which ends up in a ditch. The car crash (in which none of them are hurt); consequents them walking through the woods to the dark and dreary haunted cabin.

The film jumps forward 5 years and the girls are finally found alone in the cabin living like wild animals. Their Uncle had been searching for them all this time; now pretty much bankrupt because of it. Working with a psychologist, Dr. Dreyfuss (Daniel Kash) the girls start to adjust back into the normal world. They are sent to a large house used for psychological case studies and then they are tormented by the very Jealous Mama when the girls start to adjust and become closer to their human carers. All I will say is the girls creep me out more when they are scuttering around like half demon half wild animal than the actual entity. I don’t want to say any more because this is one film you have to see WITHOUT A DOUBT!

This film is one of Del Toro’s best yet in my opinion.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) Directed by James Wan - Friday the 13th September!!! By Lea Weller BA

Released In cinemas in the UK on FRIDAY THE 13TH!!! of September is released for our pleasure. You know? The great horror duo that bought us Saw and Paranormal Activity? Which I’m not ashamed to say I watched Saw again last night!

So with the original cast; Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins and of course Leigh Whannell himself; Insidious Chapter 2 takes up on a tantalising creepy thrill ride.

This time the Horror duo bring us the sequel to Insidious (2010); a tale about a mother, Renai and a father, Josh who are fighting to save their comatosed little boy Dalton from an evil entity who has him trapped in another world called The Further (which is why he is still in a coma). As we saw in the first film Josh had the same problems with this evil entity when he was a child himself.

Starring Patrick Wilson as Josh and Rose Byrne as Renai, this sequel is teamed with terrifying paranormal activity surrounding the family home. We are taken on a journey to find the truth about the unlucky Lambert family’s secret that has them connected to this other paranormal world and that has been haunting the boy (and his father as we find out in the first film) for decades.

Insidious chapter 2 will start just as the first film ends. For this sequel all the characters in the first film return with them literally wearing the same clothes and continuing this paranormal journey from the moment we left them.

There is said to be a sequence set inside a haunted hospital and will include flashbacks to Josh’s childhood. James Wan states that Insidious Chapter 2 will include time travel. Mind-bending? Well I’m sure we will be delighted with how he worked this into the story.

With the new poster showing a small child in a baby walker featuring the tagline “It Will Take What You Love Most” we are sure to be in for a chilling ride with this latest edition to horror. And there will be a lot of those loose ends tied up, that were left at the end of the first film.

Film Review Tom Six's Human Centipede III: The Final Sequence 2013

Tom Six’s Human Centipede 3: The Final Sequence is the final instalment of the excrement obsessed trilogy. If you’re not familiar with the Human Centipede films here a little recap for you:

Film one:

A very intelligent surgeon kidnaps people to use in his sordid experiment. He wants to create a new sub-species; the human centipede. By placing three victims anus to mouth he creates an experimental operation to create an animal that has a single alimentary canal i.e. what goes in will come out; and go in and go out; back in and out again finally. With Faeces moving through three digestive systems, each victim gets a worse fate than the last.

Film two: A mentally unstable man decides to do the same but with twelve people. He is no surgeon just a security guard who lives with his abusive mother. He uses staple guns and duct tape so it’s a bit of a hash job He is obsessed with the first film in this second instalment and has a scrap book like the surgeon’s drawings in the film. He gets impatient with the process and uses laxative to initiate the digestive process. He also rapes the centipede from behind and takes advantage of the sordid and stinky situation.

The Human Centipede 2 was originally banned by the BBFC; they would not allow it to be legally purchased anywhere in the UK. BBFC director David Cooke stated how

“The chief pleasure on offer seems to be wallowing in the spectacle of sadism (including sexual sadism) for its own sake."

Entertainment Weekly broke the news that The Human Centipede 3 will have a “big American celebrity”, and this celebrity will be Eric Roberts. Alongside the previous villain’s played by Dieter Laser and Laurence R. Harvey returning for the third instalment, Bree Olson a former porn actress will be part of the final sequence There is very little detail on the plot but rumours of a 500 person centipede is doing the rounds. Well that will be one to watch.

A Review of American Mary (2012) directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska SPOILER ALERT!!! By Lea Weller BA

Mary Mason is a struggling medical student who is broke and is losing interest in her surgical work. She goes to a local nightclub to find work as a stripper as this is her last resort; the only way to get money now. Once there she performs for the club owner until he is disturbed by his doormen as one of his patrons has been shot. Being a dodgy club owner the police could not be called so he enlisted Mary to attend to the injured man. After this Mary starts performing underground surgery in many forms including being approached by a Betty Boop lookalike to help her friend by performing unconventional surgery to sew up a woman’s vagina and remove her nipples so she looks like a Barbie doll and can feel like a doll naked without any of the pressure of being ‘indecent’ in a sense. All this for $10,000 with another $2000 on top of that just for turning up to see the doll woman. Easy money for Mary.

Written and directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska; the twisted twins, this film creates and overwhelming feeling of empathy for Mary and as she continues on her journey the audience roots her on. Getting some sort of satisfaction out of one particular event; when her medical professor drugs her and rapes her while filming it at a surgeon’s party. She enlists a club owner; who has grown fond of Mary while she has performed underground surgery for him and his heavy’s, to kidnap her professor. He is then seen duct taped to a table and she tells him how she has found a new love for body modification and how she is going to use him for a guinea pig.

The viewer assumes he is dead and a later scene where she is questioned by a police man also portrays this…. Until… she goes to see him. This is where we see the true extent of Mary’ work; she had removed both arms, both legs and then hung him on hooks by the skin in his back and had just left him dangling by his skin for days. This is one of my favourite scenes in the film, just for the surprise you get when Mary reveals to us the professor is not dead but suffering just as he should.

American Mary won five awards at Screamfest in 2012 taking home Best Actress for Katharine Isabelle’s role as the lovely Mary – a great performance I might add; just as in Ginger Snaps. Brian Pearson took home Best Cinematography. The film also won Best Makeup and Best Picture but the one we all like to see is the award for Best Director in which Jen and Sylvia Soska show us just how they have rebooted the horror genre with such a great film.

Along with The Human Centipede films and the up and coming Thanatomorphose along with all the remakes and other horror releases this year we are sure in for a treat.

This is one hell of a film both narratively and visually. This is definitely one to keep in the collection and one and another one added to the body horror genre. Check out the Soska blog "Penny Dreadful Diary" for more on the twisted twins of future horror.

Eric Falardeau's Thanatomorphose (2012) Film Review by Lea Weller BA

From writer and director Eric Falardeau we are brought Thanatomorphose (2012). In the French dictionary the word Thanatomorphose means “the visible changes after the death of an organism”; in other words the decay process the human body goes through post-mortem.

A beautiful girl wakes up one day to find her body is rotting - literally falling to pieces. Being in an unhealthy relationship with both physical and mental abuse she seems to be dying on the outside as well as the inside; her detached state of mental health starts to manifest quite brutally through bodily bruising and a rash that spreads continuing with on-going decay of, in a sense, her ‘old life’. The films examination of the id and the ego encompass frightening portrayals of love, sex and death and it pulls you into the story both emotionally and physically (with the squirming and tensing when watching beloved horror). Thanatomorphose is a full on assault on the audience with decomposing flesh and unsightly scenes; a splatter-gore hound’s ecstasy. In a review from The Conduit Speaks they state that Thanatomorphose is

An incredibly unsettling fantasy sheds more light on the woman's very real fears of being "consumed" by the men in her life and the loss of limb walks hand in horrible hand with her loss of self.

The protagonist wanders around like a corpse showing no life or interest in anything in her life. It isn’t until she starts to rot away that she starts to resemble a human being; living and breathing – with a pulse. Showing an ironic way of living life and feeling alive inside, Falardeau shows how she gets fulfilment from the old self rotting away and this is intentional and methodical. Not just a gore-hounds wet dream.

An image of a crack in the ceiling; slightly resembling a vagina symbolises and represents the evolution of the physical and psychological distress of the protagonist and her disintegration. Like the bruises and the rash – each new circumstance leaves a mark on the protagonist and the continued breakdown in the self continues to show throughout the film. Falardeau catapults body horror back into the horror genre limelight. Actress Kayden Rose is in a naked and vulnerable state throughout the film and shows raw emotion throughout truly becoming the narrative.

Falardeau’s film won Best Movie at 2012′s XXXI Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei in Spain and Best Special Makeup Effects at the A Night of Horror International Film Festival in Australia. Thanatomorphose will debut at San Diego’s Frequency Film Festival on Thursday, June 6th 2013. I eagerly await the release of this new edition the body horror archives and will be straight out to buy it as soon as it becomes available. The films powerful imagery will long haunt even the most hard-core horror fans. But will be well worth watch.

Other recent films that could be said to be similar in their intent towards the audience would be The Soska Twin’s American Mary and Tom Six’s Human Centipede one, two and the upcoming third instalment. With these new hard-core and original directors who like to live on the edge of censorship; we are sure to see a rising popularity in the horror genre. Not just for the gore but for the original representations of us as a society – our thoughts, our feelings, our desires whether repressed or not, horror shows the darkest corners of our minds and will continue to do so.

Martyrs (2008) Directed by Pascal Laugier By Lea Weller BA

The film starts in 1971 when a child named Lucie (played by Jessie Pham age 10 years old), managed to escape captivity from someone who had kidnapped her and tortured her. Lucie gets to safety and spends her remaining childhood years in an orphanage. She would not make friends with any of the children accept one. Anna (played by Erika Scott aged 10 years old). They do everything together.

15 years later Lucie played by Mylène Jampanoï recognises her captors in a newspaper as they were never caught. She hunts them down to free herself from her long time demons and becomes a murderer. Anna played by Morjana Alaoui enters Lucie’s hell and understands her previous plight when it is later found out that her captors were part of a larger organisation with a larger network of cold hearted torturers working towards the martyrdom experiment.

Lucie and Anna’s relationship in uncertain and Lucie imposes her suffering onto Anna literally projecting her fears and in turn Anna becomes the sufferer. Lucie changes from needy to nasty and Anna becomes quite literally martyred in her own friendship. When Anna loses Lucie to her demons she finds a hidden torture chamber under the house where she finds another tortured woman. She nurtures her and helps her become free so she is replacing Lucie.

When Anna is captured and locked away to be periodically tortured she draws strength from her memories of Lucie. So now Anna is alone and her torment begins. This is where the film gets even more interesting. Anna is given the reason for her upcoming torment by Mademoiselle – the apparent leader of the organisation. In order to elevate the mind to a higher state of consciousness the body needs to be punished. Her belief in the martyred suffering and the next world show the films connection with French Catholicism. She also states that this process works best on vulnerable young women

The film continues in torturing Lucie by force- feeding, shaving all her hair off, humiliating beatings and being made to pee and poo in a bucket from a chair with a hole in it.

When Anna takes a certain glance Mademoiselle is called. She speaks to Anna and Anna whispers in her ear Mademoiselle is the only person to hear of what Anna had seen when she transcended herself at the end of the process (the last process involved skinning her alive. Fully). The film is ambiguous and Martyrs transcends itself just as Anna does, there is no fulfilment to the film just an empty hole in which Mademoiselle left us with at the end of the film. Just what did Anna say? What transcends this world?

Django Unchained (2012) Directed by Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino once again brings us a narcotic euphoria in the form of a comedy western about slavery. A film about exploitation and the brutal treatment of slaves; with unexpected and compelling moments and the films ability to provide a violent thrill ride, Tarantino gives us many opportunity to be satisfied.

It is loosely based on the 1960’s cult Django westerns along with the comic series. Django Unchained is based in Texas, America before the civil war in 1858. Jamie Foxx stars as Django; a former slave of a brutal land owner. Django is befriended by German bounty hunter Dr King Schultz played by Christoph Waltz and the duo has a nice sort of bromance throughout the movie.

Schultz is a German Dentist who is now a bounty hunter travelling around finding people wanted dead or alive. And as this is a Tarantino film, the hunted usually end up dead. Piling bodies up to return in exchange for the bounty. Schultz needs Django to help him find two brothers who have a bounty out on their heads. He saves Django from yet another brutal stretch of -slavery in return for his help. Django helps him in return for his freedom and help to find his wife. Through their journey they hunt for Django's wife Broomhilda (played by Kerry Washington) who was sold separately to slavery.

He finds her with Calvin Candie (played by the great Leonardo Dicaprio); a racist and sadistic man who is head of the plantation in Mississippi named Candieland. Candie’s household attendant Stephen played by Samuel L Jackson gives an unforgettable performance. He is very loyal to his white master and is shocked to see Django a free man and riding on a horse. He treats his fellow slaves exactly how they are treated by the white master. This is one of the most comical moments in the film. Just the shock and impertinence of Stephan is enough to make you laugh.

Django Unchained is delightful in its exploding gunshots a splatter western would be the correct term in this case. Tarantino’s main staple in his films is blood. He loves the stuff. And not just trickling blood he has to have exploding blood covering the scene in a red mist.

I won’t spoil anything for you so I won’t babble on, but this film is a definite must see.

Today I was invited to attend a master-class in horror at the University of Derby – a live interview with filmmakers Adam Marsh and Owen Tooth. Devils Tower is a new imaginative British horror and will be coming to a cinema soon in 2013.

Everybody has gone through the horror fan rite of passage- watching that one horror before you should that got you addicted to the intense feeling of watching this genre.

This film from the duo will delight horror fans this year. Tooth states that through his experiences he realised the way to go was through narrative and they wanted to “make something that is poetic and beautiful”.

Tom Craig (the interviewer and also the Lecturer and programme leader for Film and Television Production at the University of Derby) asks Marsh to describe Devils Tower for us. He just spoke one word “nightmare”! Then he continued: The film is about a young girl played by Emmerdale’s very own Roxanne Pallett. The girl is thrown out of her home by her horrible alcoholic mother who is played by Frances Ruffelle (Les Miserable, 2012). She is forced to move into a creepy tower block where strange things start to happen. Marsh adds “ lots of blood!” A British gritty urban horror.

The duo spoke about when Woman in Black (2012) was released they thought “oh no not another ghosts story in a stately home! Why cant ghosts be in a city tower block?”

They were asked how they casted the actors for the film roles.

“Pallett floored the whole room with her performance” – originally she was auditioning for another role. After her audition they made this particular casting decision straight away. Jay Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob e.g Dogma, 1999) was delighted to be involved and is a great choice for his particular role.

Devils Tower will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2013. There they will be talking and discussing with distributers and deciding who best to place the film with. It will then be up to the distributors to set a release date – hopefully sooner rather than later.

Craig points out “the future is clearly looking bright for both of you. Are you a faithful team or will there be any infidelity?” after a few laughs Tooth replied “we have an open relationship”.

After the live interview we had a questions and answers session. Questions asked were:

How do you get from short films into paid work?

Progress through the ranks. The network of people very quickly help you build skills in varied fields. Don’t say no to anything. Any involvement, any experience you can get hold of – embrace it! He said it was like he was actively waiting around if that makes sense? Waiting for the right opportunity to come along to get them that one step closer.

Was making a feature film as you imagined it would be? If not what was it like?

No, it wasn’t – the pace things move. For example when we were shooting Devils Tower it was like we were galloping through scenes. We had all sorts of onset disasters but you just need to trust your instincts and your team. There were hundreds of mini collaborations going on through production.

Did you use a local makeup artist to Derby?

Yes and she had only worked on one film previously, but her work was amazing. There is an elevator scene in which someone falls down the elevator shaft and she contributed her dangling eyeball into the final death scene.

Well I for one will be waiting for the release and booking a date with the big screen. Derby’s very own double decadence for horror lovers.

How to Get Into Glastonbury for Free

Glastonbury is one of the UK’s top festivals, but it seems so hard to get hold of a ticket and if you do manage to get a ticket you always seem to be paying ridiculous prices. Tickets sold out this year in 4 hours, that’s 150,000 tickets, and some festival goers paid up to £195 if not more. But there is a solution! Don’t despair as Oxfam amongst other charities, supply 14 top UK festivals with 5,000 stewards. Some of the festivals include Glastonbury, Download, Bestival, Reading and Leeds and more. You get a free ticket, free accommodation, free food (don’t you love the word free?) and a rewarding experience along with having something that employers will love on your CV.

A steward works three 8 hour shifts over the course of the festival and would get to go to whole event. Great! All staff can hear the music at all times and are allowed to enjoy the festival at their own leisure when they are not working. So, the festival staff become festival goers too. The stewards get their own private camping with warm showers and clean toilets and while working hard and playing hard, you will make great friends. One steward said that “stewarding is a hugely enjoyable and rewarding experience. It's a fantastic way to gain a new set of skills, as well as raising money for a great cause, meeting a new and diverse bunch of people and catching some amazing live music.

All applicants must be 18 or over on the first day of the festival and be eligible to volunteer in the UK. Volunteers need to apply online early where a reference and a deposit will be asked for. The deposit will be lost if the steward fails to turn up for their shift. The volunteer doesn’t need any experience as all stewards get trained up on the first day at a three hour training session at registration. This is where the steward would find out their roles, shift times and receive a handbook which must be handy at all times when working.

To be an Oxfam Steward, the volunteer must stick to the rules set out by the charity as they will be representing that charity. A steward must be polite, friendly, and approachable, have good humour, be comfortable speaking to the public and have an excellent level of spoken English. Stewards must also be punctual, honest, reliable and flexible and be ready for a great time!

A steward’s roles may involve; monitoring an area, providing information and advice, planning for every eventuality, responding quickly and reporting any safety and security issues to your supervisor. All stewards are allocated a supervisor for each shift and a security firm ensures safety for all. Other roles can include; checking tickets, monitoring crowds at stages, staffing festival gates and so on. A Steward must be alert and attentive as they are the eyes and ears of the festival. Be prepared for all weather, so take warm clothes and sensible footwear and hot water bottle if you want to.
