A lot’s been happening this past week in the world of League of Legends eSports. From a few roster changes on some of your favorite teams to a last minute double-forfeiture during the IEM Kiev Qualifiers, there’s certainly a lot of hustle and bustle going on in the Challenger Circuit.

Roster Changes on CLG and Curse Gaming

This week two North American powerhouse teams changed up their rosters. Curse Gaming lost one of their starting five, Attack Damage carry player Doublelift, to longtime rival Counter Logic Gaming. CLG meanwhile has continued to wage their own internal struggle, benching founding member and longtime support player Elementz and juggling Chauster, their former Attack Damage carry, into his place to make room for Doublelift.

IEM Kiev Qualifier Double Forfeit

Equally shocking was the result of the second round of the North American qualifier for IEM Kiev. During the 3rd place round both Epik and Curse Gaming withdrew from the tournament, leaving the admins to decide the 2nd and 3rd place qualifiers for IEM Kiev. In the end, the standings broke down to Dignitas, Curse, and Epik earning the top three places respectively. It’s been speculated that the motivation for both teams’ decision to forfeit had to do with the seeding of Counter Logic Gaming in the Kiev bracket. Since the 2nd place seed from the qualifier would have to face these perennial champions, both teams made a bid to avoid facing this heavily favored team in the first round. Whatever their reasoning, it was Curse that wound up pulling the short straw by a random decision.

IEM Kiev Qualifiers almost here

With Intel Extreme Masters Kiev representing the final opportunity to qualify for the IEM World Championship in Hannover, the competition is sure to be fierce. While numerous European Teams (as well as the up and coming Chinese team World Elite) have already qualified, Team Solo Mid and Counter Logic Gaming remain the only North American teams assured a spot at the finals. And with $100,000 USD and the title of IEM World Champion on the line, this is should prove to be a high-adrenaline event as the remaining teams do battle over the remaining positions in the finals. Be sure to watch the North American IEM Kiev Qualifier this weekend at the NESL website!

German ESL Pro League Finals this weekend

If you’re in the mood to take in a bit of German culture, the ESL Pro League finals are also slated to take place this weekend. Featuring the top German League of Legends teams this exciting event sports a 3.500 € grand prize. And while it includes a few long time championship contenders such as Game.de and Alternate, the formerly unknown ACER may be the team to watch this tournament. Don’t miss your chance to catch these up and comers before they break into the Challenger Circuit. Casting will be available in both German and English, with the ESL’s Joe Miller and Deman handling the English stream while Riot Games’ own Daniel ‘Zenon the Stoic’ Klien provides commentary in German. Hey guys,

Now that you've started to get a chance to try out the changes a bit, I would like to start collecting feedback on what tweaks you believe she would need.

My first concern is that we made the W mana cost too high. The reason it ended up this way was because in internal tests, she was able to max W and constantly harass her opponent in a solo lane (mainly mid since that is the safest lane to push). This was why her old Ricochet leveled up in number of bounces and also why Katarina's Bouncing Blades does as well. The early harass is extremely annoying to play against due to the increased zone of harass (since standing behind your minions is no longer safe), but I really wanted to maintain the feel of many bounces at rank 1 since it severely alters the feel of the ability if it only bounces once.

Hey folks,

After letting the jungle settle for a day and not only reading the feedback on the forums, but watching streamers, discussing with high-level players, and running some additional internal testing and mathcraft, we will be making changes to the jungle, likely tomorrow.

What will be the scope of these changes, and what are we trying to fix?

* XP Rate: This isn't as smoothed out as we'd liked (or was intended) and has been the most noticeable problem in the new jungle. While we do think this is not as drastically far off as some believe, it is lower than intended. We'll likely make updates here, especially relating to small camps.

* Penalty of missed ganks: While we do like this tradeoff, we don't like the tradeoff ratio here, something you guys have also felt pretty substantially. Changes made will effect this for the better, whether in increased reward or reduced resource loss.

* Gold Rate: Jungler gold is slightly lower than needed, and this is also related to small camp gold. We will be more careful here as to not make counter-jungling worse (since it revolves largely on stealing the big monsters out of camps), but will be evaluating this.

Classick, Guinsoo and I will be doing some final proposals and mathcraft in the morning, in hopes to release it in a hotfix. I'll try to provide status updates as we get more information. Details to come.

EDIT: This update is going into testing now. Based on the results, I'll share details. Timeframe is moved to most likely tomorrow (Thursday) to ensure accuracy. I'll continue to update this thread.

Last week we sat down to talk with the reigning League of Legends World Champions Fnatic MSI to ask them about how they came together as a team. This week, we’re talking to them about their future plans in League of Legends eSports. We’re pleased to present the conclusion of our interview with Fnatic MSI!

RIOT: You guys have already won some of the biggest League of Legends tournaments out there, the most striking examples being the Season One Championship at Dreamhack and the first Intel Extreme Masters. Is there any game or event that has a special meaning to you, or that you will never forget for whatever reason?

Mellisan: For me it’s probably the first match from the Season One Championship Grand Final vs. aAa/Millenium. Even though we lost terribly that round, I perfectly remember how we chased Moma's Anivia through the jungle like retards, and I got hit by an epic arrow by Yellowstar from all over the map when I just thought I escaped.

Lamia: The IEM GC Finals in Hannover on CeBIT will be really awesome, I think. Additionally, I'm really looking forward to all the Season Two tournaments and more tournaments in Asia or America

RIOT: Are there any events or championships that you guys are especially eager to win?

Cyanide: The Season Two Championship and the finals of Intel Extreme Masters.

xPeke: Season Two Championship tournament. But that’s far still, so probably the IEM Finals championship in Hannover will be something we'll try to get. We managed to do it last year when it was invitational, would be great to make a high pole again.

RIOT: Since Season Two has a prize pool of $5,000,000, that’s naturally going to attract a lot of competition. What’s your game plan in Season Two, and which teams do you think will be your toughest opponents?

Cyanide: I think our strongest opponent will continue to be SK, but I also see a lot of new teams rising all over the world, especially in Asia.

xPeke: No idea about teams. Since the Season One, teams have changed so much that it's impossible to predict if a team will even stick together, but I’ll say the usual teams like SK [SK Gaming], CLG [Counter Logic Gaming], and TSM [Team Solo Mid]. I don’t know much about Asian teams but I have seen that WE [World Elite] is in really good shape. Our preparation will be, as always, play a lot try to fail as much as possible before the events so we know what we are not good at. It sounds stupid, but seems to work.

RIOT: What advice would you give to new teams that want to make it to the top? How can they go from being completely unknown to the number one team in the League of Legends eSports scene?

Cyanide: Play. A lot. Together.

Shushei: So, first of all make sure you all have fun together. It may sound silly, but it’s how it works for us at least. Then it’s good to have people specialized in roles or more like in lanes. Whenever it goes bad don’t rage at your teammates. It’s not [Solo/Duo Queue], though you shouldn’t rage in [Solo/Duo Queue] either. It just puts additional stress on your team, and eventually leads to disbanding and exchanging of members. Depending on people’s personalities some may hold the anger inside and let it explode at some point, or just keep flaming back which decreases team morale greatly. And the last thing, but not least: practice a lot! Experience is what lets you know what to do when in what situation. Cheers!

On November 30th at 02:00 UK Time (03:00 CET), Volibear, the Thunder’s Roar, will begin his journey to the League of Legends. We estimate his arrival time to be approximately 6 hours later.

We will be performing a hard shutdown in preparation for the patch, which means that all games will end at 02:00 UK Time (03:00 CET). Rank queues will be disabled at 00:30 UK Time (01:30 CET) in preparation for the patch.

- Monsters now heal 5% immediately when they retreat (instead of after 1 second), but are easier to re-aggro

Game Battles Arena - Fall 2011 Season Playoffs!

PLAYOFFS ARE ALMOST HERE!!!

The Fall 2011 Season ends on December 31st, 2011 at 9:00 PM EST.

The new Winter Season 2012 will launch immediately following the Fall Season, and you will be able to begin playing new matches instantly. All of your team's historical stats, roster, and information will carry over. You do not have to create a new team. You will need to enroll your team in the new season by visiting the Ladder page and clicking the "Enroll Your Team in this Season" link.

THE OFFICIAL ROSTER LOCK DATE IS THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1st AT 9:00 PM EST.

Playoff Eligibility Requirements

Roster changes including invites, gamertag, and role changes will be prohibited with NO EXCEPTIONS after the roster lock date.
Any team that clicks the Override Roster Lock button will be not be eligible to compete in the Playoffs.
Your team must have played a minimum of 5 matches during the month of December to be eligible for Playoffs.
Your team must meet the minimum roster limit required by your Ladder, as seen on the rules page.
Teams created after the Roster Lock Date are not affected; however, they are also not eligible for Playoffs.

Note: Playoffs are being run on Ladders in which there was enough activity to warrant having a Playoff, which will be determined by Staff. All Playoffs will be 16 Teams only. Achievements will only be given to first place winners of a Playoff. Ladders that did not receive a Playoff will not be eligible for an achievement.

On December 1st, rosters will lock on any Ladder that will be hosting Playoffs. Playoff Rules and Settings, along with Gametypes that will be used in Playoff Matches, will be released after December 15th. Each Playoff round may have predetermined Gametypes that each team will have to play.

The default match time will be listed on the Playoff Bracket for each round, which will not be updated until after December 15th. Please check after that time.

Remember, there are only limited Playoff spots available, so get your final roster together by December 1st and start battling!

Doublelift Rejoins CLG - Elementz Benched

Amid lackluster performances and team squabbles, CLG has come to the decision that they're benching their support Elementz so they can start Doublelift, formerly of Curse, in the AD role. This will mean some shifting around, and Chauster will most likely play support now. The slumping bigfatjiji will move to mid.

Peter "Doublelift" Peng, known for his great farming skill, was benched himself by CLG months ago, when he decided to move on and play for Curse. Since then, he has increased his pool of competitive champions and has experience playing with most of CLG. Elementz is clearly unhappy with his new role, saying that HotshotGG and Chauster have not been taking practice seriously, and that leaving himself on the team gave CLG more versatility.

I don't exactly agree with the choice that was made (no shit eh?) in kicking me for Doublelift. Now Doublelift has improved greatly and it's good for him that he joined CLG but still I don't see how he improves the team so much.. In fact I think leaving me on the team gave us more versatility

CLG will hope that the move will improve the team before the North American IEM Kiev qualifier on December 3rd. They hope their past experience with Doublelift will help him fit in smoothly, but is shifting the team's roles around really make this a smooth transition? Spectators will have to wait until then to find out.

The Black Friday Legacy Skin Sale Begins Today!

Today marks the beginning of our Black Friday Legacy Skin Sale. Starting this Friday the 25th of November and running through midnight Pacific Time on Monday the 28th of November, we will be placing many of our more classic champion skins on sale at 75% off. Once the sale is complete, these skins will become Legacy Skins and will retire from the League of Legends Store. Although they will no longer be available for purchase, they may reappear in the store under very special circumstances.

All Legacy Skins will still be playable for anyone who owns them after they have been retired, and will still be visible to other players in game and at the load screen. You will have to own a Legacy Skin, however, in order to be able to view it in a champion’s profile. In the event that you’re the owner of a champion with only two skins remaining for purchase following this initiative, don’t worry! These champions have some fantastic new skins in development that we’ll be releasing in the near future.

Additionally, if you want to pick up one of these highly collectable skins, but don’t yet own the champion in question, we’ll also be offering any champion that sports a prospective Legacy Skin at 20% off from now until the end of the sale.

Abilties:

Rolling Thunder: Volibear drops to all fours and runs faster if chasing an enemy champion. The first enemy he attacks is knocked into the air.
Frenzy: Volibear's repeated attacks grant him additional attack speed. Once Volibear has repeatedly attacked four times, he can perform a vicious bite on his target.
Majestic Roar: Volibear lets out a powerful roar that damages and slows enemies. Minions and monsters are feared as well.
Thunder Claws (Ultimate): Volibear channels the power of the storm causing his attacks to blast his targets with lightning that bounces to other nearby enemies.
Chosen of the Storm (passive): Volibear heals rapidly for a few seconds when his health drops to a critical level.

Lore:

Though the northern reaches of Freljord are some of the most unforgiving lands in Valoran, the Ursine have survived upon the region's barren, stormy tundra for centuries. As a fierce and respected warrior of the Ursine, Volibear devoted his life to the protection of his people and loyalty to his elder brother, the tribe's chief. When his brother was killed during a hunt on the tundra, the tribe looked to Volibear as his successor. It was an honor and a burden that Volibear had never expected, but he shouldered the charge with pride. However, by Ursine tradition, the tribe could not recognize Volibear as chief until he returned from a journey to the peak of their sacred mountain, a place forever shrouded in a thundering maelstrom. As part of their agreement, he joined the League of Legends in the name of a unified Freljord, representing the primal might of his nation on the Field of Justice.
