I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful summer! Besides spending as much time as I can outside, I've been involved in some new creative projects. I hope to share the details of this with you soon.

Above is my latest oil painting titled Dawn. I hope it's one of my most expressive pieces. The inspiration for this painting was a room in an abandoned house. I imagined what the space would look and feel like if it were livable again.

Summer Afternoon

Oil on Masonite, 8x10 inches

This is my latest experimental piece. It's the first painting I've done that is based on a completely invented location. Previous works have been based on actual places, although more recent works have been combinations of the real and imaginary.

I've been going through a lot of personal changes and I'm noticing these changes being reflected in my work. It's both scary and exhilarating to try these new approaches, and I feel it's just the beginning!

September by Brian O'Neill

Pastel on Paper, 16×12 inches

I'm excited to see the first signs of spring. The temperature is slowly starting to rise and the snow is almost melted. This painting really captures the feeling of being in between seasons. I really love the indication of the sun in the sparkling water.
This is the first painting that he completed since we moved into our new home and studio.

Connections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Madame X by John Singer Sargent

Featured in Connections/The Ideal Woman

Connections is a new online feature on the Metropolitan Museum of Art website. Every week, a staff member shares artwork from the collection that they feel personally connected to.

Google periodically changes the logo on their search page to reflect an important event, anniversary, or birthday. The project, called Google Doodle, is often inspired by fine artists. Below is a selection of some of the logos inspired by artists and their artwork.

Left Column: Magritte, Cassatt, Pollock, Monet, Dali

Right Column: Munkácsy, Repin, Miro, Cezanne, Sorolla

If you would like to see more of these logos, you can visit the Google Doodles archive.

Update: Artists, I received a great question in the comments and I would love to hear your answer: If you were to design a logo based on your work, what would it look like?

Birthday and First Art Library Post

New Home Birthday Cake

This weekend I celebrated my 32nd birthday. I had a wonderful time and I'm looking forward to the upcoming year. I'm so grateful for my friends and family! Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes!

One of my birthday gifts was a new book for the art library. This is a project I've wanted to organize for a long time and I'm excited to have finally started. The new book is Pictorial Webster's A Visual Dictionary of Curiosities. This book features pages of small engravings from the 19th century that were featured in Webster's Dictionaries.

Here are some of my favorite wood block and metal engravings from the book:

Redwing Blackbird and Pomegranate

And some aquatic illustrations:

Bottom: Detail image from Ingres' Comtesse d'Haussonville, 1845

I've been spending a lot of time looking through some of the high resolution images of paintings on the new Google Art Project. Above is one of the interesting things I've come across by zooming into different works of art. I find the portrait of Venus from Botticelli's The Birth of Venus remarkably similar to Ingres' Portrait of Comtesse d'Haussonville. Perhaps Ingres was influenced by this piece of art?

It's been a lot of fun discovering new details from familiar paintings and seeing other works of art for the first time. I hope that this is only the beginning and more artwork will be added to the project in the future.

Renfield by Andrew Wyeth

Renfield, 1999

Here is a painting of an interior by Danish artist Georg Nicolaj Achen. I could not find a lot of information about him online, other than a few scattered examples of his work including Portrait of the artist's wife on Christie's and Reading Woman on Flickr.

On another note, we have been in the process of moving our home and studio. I'm glad to say we are nearly finished and settled.

Above is my latest painting Passing By. I really enjoyed working on this piece. I started by massing in the overall shapes and slowly developed the areas that I wanted to be more detailed. When I first started painting, I would work on one area until it was fully completed before moving on to a new section. Although, I love the finished realistic look by working this way, I'm finding working on the whole piece at once to be more enjoyable. Also, I'm tending to leave sections of the painting soft and just sharpening the focal point and surrounding areas.

Luminescene by Timothy Barr

Oil on Panel, 38 x 42 inches

Happy New Year! Here is a lovely winter snow scene by contemporary American artist Timothy Barr.

I've been reflecting the past year and I've started coming up some goals for the year ahead. Last year, I had a fantastic time painting and drawing outdoors. For this year, I'd like to develop some plein air work using oils and pastels. Also, I'd like to finally start an art library. I've been wanting to do this for a long time and I'm hoping posting about it will get the ball rolling. I look forward to sharing my new artwork and new books!

Winter's Web by Quang Ho

Oil, 24x24 inches

There is a lot of additional information available about the artist and this painting at the Rijksmuseum and on Essential Vermeer.

The Waichulis Studio is now Ani Art Academy Waichulis

We are proud to announce that The Waichulis Studio is now the Ani Art Academy Waichulis. This new stage of development will allow us to keep the same curriculum and offer more resources to our artists. Some exciting new opportunities include the ability to offer workshops and grant multiple scholarships.

We've been extremely busy revamping our website to reflect these new changes. Besides a new look, you can find new information and features on our website, www.aniwaichulis.com. One of the new additions to the site is the video clip above that showcases the artists and artwork of the studio. We hope you enjoy it!

Young Girl Sewing by Vilhelm Hammershøi

Oil on canvas, 1887

This lovely work is by Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi. I believe this is a portrait of the artist's sister, Anna. I was reminded of this painting on the Underpaintings blog. You may be interested in my two earlier posts on him, In the Bedroom by Vilhelm Hammershøi and the online BBC Hammershøi Documentary.

Heirloom by Timothy Barr

Oil on panel, 39 x 42 inches
