Welcome to our Lean Six Sigma Blog. We intend to discuss and debate Lean Six Sigma and Six Sigma and all related topics. Over the last 15 years I have been involved in the implementation, design and deployment of countless Lean Six Sigma programs. As a result I have a deep understanding or what makes Lean Six Sigma a success.

The Blog will cover topics like what is Lean Six Sigma, why deploy it, how to deploy it, the skills and tools but we will start with a key topic how to ensure success. I hope you enjoy the blog.

Many companies plan or have implemented Lean, Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma in the last decade. Many have obtained quantifiable results, which have helped to transform their business. Many more however, have got some quick wins or picked off the low hanging fruit and have then seen their efforts stall or stop. They have not seen the benefits reported by companies like GE, Motorola, Honeywell etc. Over the years we have been involved as either, responsible for implementation, or as consultants or trainers in Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma programmes. As a result we have observed and collected data on why some companies have successful programmes and projects, while others quickly fail and stall. This article is a short summary of what we have found, and how we can help your organisation to be successful.

Why do Lean Six Sigma Programmes fail?

There has been much written on this subject, but from our experience of deploying all over the world, the key reasons for failure are:-

l Lack of commitment / understanding from senior managers or directors
l Lack of a clear vision for the programme
l Politics - my programme is more important than yours
l Lack of understanding of the purpose of the programme – burning platform
l Lack of commitment from finance community
l Inability to capture savings from projects to prove success
l Measures of performance not aligned – I will concentrate on what I am measured on, not what is important to the programme
l Half hearted deployment – allowing some people to work outside the agreed approach
l Selection of the wrong Black Belts / Champions
l Selection of the wrong projects
l Loss of trained Black Belts from the company
l Lack of training in effective change management for Black Belts
l Lack of coaching of Green and Black Belts
l Lack of time given to Green or Black Belts to conduct projects
l Lack of Gate reviews to ensure projects are on track
l Poorly defined projects
l Working on too many projects at once – less is more
l Lack of communication about programme and the burning platform / goals
l Lack of effective coordination and integration of the programme
l Elitism persona of Black Belts and others
