Getting rid of your gut does more than just improve the way you look - you'll also have a healthier heart to show for your efforts! Cutting your carbohydrate intake by a third will help you lose fat while significantly lowering your triglycerides, a key predictor of heart disease. Scientists at the University of California at Davis found that cutting carbs to less than 40 percent of your total daily calories deactivated a triglyceride-producing gene called stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase (SCD). The greater the reduction in carbohydrates the less active the gene became. Start today by switching to an open-faced sandwich or skipping bread altogether in favor of a tortilla.

Sometimes you just love to rip into a big stack of pancakes on a Saturday or Sunday morning - but trust me, you will pay the price. Pancakes are very high on the Glycemic Index, which means that insulin levels will surge, and those carbs will be packed onto your body as stored fat…undoing all of the good work you did during the week. So try this substitute this weekend - I had these last weekend and drizzled them with melted natural peanut butter. You could also use sugar free syrup or jelly and some real butter to top these tasty high-protein pancakes. The casein in the cottage cheese and the fiber in the oats will keep you feeling satisfied, and burning fat, straight through to lunch.

1/2 cup low (or no) fat cottage cheese

1/2 cup steel cut oats

1 whole egg and 3 egg whites (any size egg)

Dash of cinnamon

Blend all ingredients in a blender, divide batter into four equal pancakes and cook in a frying pan or griddle on medium-high heat. Flip when bottom is golden brown.

Be creative - add some blueberries in after blending or on top, strawberries would work great as well!

In case you missed it, Oprah Winfrey has announced that yes, once again, she has crossed the 200 pound mark. Yes, the same Oprah who lugged a wagon full of fat on stage when she lost a bunch of weight in the late 80s. And yes, the same Oprah who visited the deep South last year to recruit people to get on the Bob Greene "Best Life" diet. The same Oprah who seemingly has Dr. Mehmet Oz on her show every single day. Now, just like her pudgy offshoot, Dr. Phil, she is once again shining light on the "do as I say, not as I do" hippo-crisy.

What I want to know is - when will people stop listening to Oprah? She has ZERO credibility at this point. Remember the whole Hermes hissy fit she claims did not happen? You know, when she said that she was shut out of the store and making it a race issue, when it was really a retail store that was abiding by their posted hours and did not want to extend her the "celebrity courtesy" she sought? Or how about the whole James Frey scandal, where she promoted his book as part of her Book Club (and do NOT get me started on her undue influence on the book publishing industry) and then had a "shame on you" episode of her show when it was exposed that he made the story up? Now, she is using the tired "messed up thyroid" excuse to blame for her recent fat explosion.

So who hosts the SHAME ON YOU, OPRAH episode of the Oprah Winfrey show?! I will gladly step up and rake her over the coals for being the hippo-crite that she is. Oprah, you have all the resources in the world - a cook, a trainer, medical staff - resources to which most people would never have access. Set a good example for all of those who look up to you and live a healthy lifestyle. You have tirelessly peddled your friends' weight loss products to millions of lemmings who fall victim to your "broad appeal" - maybe you should donate back some of the proceeds you have made over the past 20-something years related to weight loss to programs that actually work and are written by people who truly "walk the walk." I would call this food-for-thought, but then Oprah might eat it!

A fat belly certainly makes you a big man - and also less of a man, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Researchers studied over 580 men for almost 20 years, and found that a 4-point increase in body mass index - a (somewhat-flawed) calculation used to determine obesity - accelerates your natural decline in testosterone by 10 years! This corresponds to a gain of 30 pounds for a man who is 5 feet 10 inches tall. It's not just the testosterone levels that suffer - the deficiency also increases your risks of diabetes, bone fractures and Alzheimer's disease.

So what to do if you are putting on weight? Sign up for my free newsletter at http://leanstate.com to get rid of that belly fat and preserve your manhood!

LEWISTON, Maine – Army and Navy recruiters took one look at 330-pound Ulysses Milana and told him to forget about joining. "'You've got to lose weight,'" Milana remembers them saying. But Marine recruiters were willing to work with him as he began his weight-loss journey in December 2007.

Now, 11 months later, Milana is 140 pounds lighter as he leaves Monday for Parris Island, S.C., to begin boot camp.

It wasn't easy, Milana said, but he managed to slim down through exercise, healthier eating habits and forgoing an occasional beer after work. The 23-year-old said he even refused a beer at his going-away party Saturday night.

Milana said he always wanted to follow in his family's footsteps by serving his country. His wife, Latoya, also comes from a military family.

Much of his weight-loss motivation came from Latoya, a nurse, who helped him reduce his calorie intake when he began his effort in earnest last December.

"It was really difficult for him at first. He always said, 'I'm gonna lose weight.' But I never took him seriously," Latoya told the Sun Journal newspaper. "Then, when he started to do it, I told him he needed to cut his portion sizes way down."

Marine recruiters also worked with him, helping to develop a workout regimen.

"You can sit there and preach and preach, but if you're not willing to help, then it doesn't lead you to success," Staff Sgt. George Monteith said. "If I say, 'Go lose weight and I'll see you in a year,' then what kind of help have I offered to make that happen?"

A former culinary student, Milana said it was a challenge to give up favorites like pizza and hot wings, but cracking open a cold beer after work was perhaps the toughest guilty pleasure to abandon.

"It was really hard. You see all your friends drinking beer, and you're like, 'Oh, man, I want one,'" he said. But his determination kept him on track, and he would head for the gym or don a head lamp and go out for a run.

Before choking down a quick bite, have a seat. People who snack while sitting at a set table eat fewer calories in their next meal than people who are snacking on-the-go, according to a Canadian study. Researchers served identical portions of soup with crackers, a sandwich, yogurt and fruit to study participants, who either ate while standing at a counter or at a cloth-covered table. Those who were seated consumed a third less calories when returning for dinner. When you feel like you are eating a formal meal, it makes you feel like you are eating more than you actually are, increasing your satiety levels, according to the study's author.

Interesting article - and lends credence to the theory that successful fat loss efforts rely on surrounding yourself with others who support you and live a healthy lifestyle. Granted you don't have to live in the healthiest city in the U.S. to be successful, but it sure would not hurt

——————————————————————

What's the healthiest city in America? It appears to be Burlington, Vt.

Vermont's largest city is tops among U.S. metropolitan areas by having the largest proportion of people — 92 percent — who say they are in good or great health.

It's also among the best in exercise and among the lowest in obesity, diabetes and other measures of ill health, according to a recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This New England city of 40,000, on the shores of Lake Champlain, is in some ways similar to the unhealthiest city — Huntington, W.Va. Both are out-of-the-way college towns with populations that are overwhelmingly white people of English, German or Irish ancestry.

But there the similarities end:

Burlington is younger, with an average age of 37, compared to 40 in Huntington, according to the Census Bureau.

Burlington is better off financially, with 8 percent living at the federal poverty level, compared to 19 percent in Huntington.

It's much more educated, with nearly 40 percent of area residents having at least a college bachelor's degree. Only 15 percent in the Huntington area do.

The cultures are significantly different, too. Bicycling, hiking, skiing and other exercises are common in Burlington. Neighborhood groups commonly focus on improving parks, working in community gardens and repairing and improving sidewalks.

"There's this norm of a lot of activity," said Chris Finley, Vermont's deputy health commissioner, who works in Burlington.

And though college staples like pizza are common, healthier foods are also popular. Grass-fed beef is offered in finer restaurants, vegan options are plentiful, and the lone downtown supermarket is run by a co-op successful in selling bulk rice and other healthy choices to low-income residents.

Burlington is helped by the presence of IBM and other employers offering more generous health benefits and corporate wellness programs than companies in Huntington, some experts suggested.

According to researchers at the University of California at San Diego and Harvard, if your friends or family are overweight, there is an increased chance you are (or will be) overweight as well. A 32-year study tracked the weight records of more than 12,000 people, and found that the chances of becoming obese went up if a friend, sibling or spouse also gained too much weight - an increased risk of 57 percent, 40 percent and 37 percent, respectively. Researchers concluded that the participants were influenced by similar attitudes, behaviors and acceptance of obesity - in other words, you may not feel so bad about being fat if your best friends and closest relatives are fat. The researchers suggested that their findings may have implications for how to better deal with obesity - rather than treating individuals, it might be more useful to treat groups of friends and relatives together.

Besides burning calories, exercise helps your brain stick to a diet. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh studies overweight adults for two years, and found that the participants who didn't follow a 3-hour-per-week exercise plan ate more than the 1,500 calories per day the study allotted. The reverse was also true - sneaking in extra snacks sabotaged their workouts. You need diet AND exercise to maintain long-term weight loss. Both actions serve as reminders to stay the course, reinforcing your fat loss goals and drive.

On the last count the word “diet” produced in excess of 157 million web pages of diet plans, pills, potions and dieting tips from health institutions, diet companies, nutritional professionals and otherwise - from all over the world. And yet we are approaching the peak of an obesity epidemic which is causing untold mental misery and depression, aside from the ever increasing debilitating diseases being linked to those overweight or obese. With such an abundance of information available - how can this be?

The trend is unforgiving and is second only to smoking in terms of the cause of self-inflicted premature loss of life, but left to its own devices within the next five years obesity is sure to take the number one slot. Mother Nature is ruthless in her approach to life, in that she only allows the fittest to survive and the trend we see today is her reaction to the effects of a diet that is clearly not suited to the well-being of the human body and mind. We only have to stop, take a step in back and look around us to see that there is one hell of a serious problem. There is no need for statistics, reports or media news to tell us such. It's clear that we as individuals have to make a change in what we do if we have any intention to reverse the current obesity trend. The ultimate responsibility lies with each and every one of us to act for the benefit of ourselves.

We have to accept the fact that the grocery industry is a host of contradiction in that it sells both dietary products along side the very products that cause us to be overweight or obese in the first instance. This is so obvious in our supermarkets today. It has become human nature that profit has a higher weighting than human health, and this is evident in many industries around the world, and is far from unique within dieting circles. We must also bear in mind the diet companies, whilst they portray an air of interest and concern, in reality they are totally dependent on your failure to diet for their very own business survival. If they were good at what they do, their businesses would surely fail. So who can we trust aside from ourselves. The evidence is clear -there is no debate.

We may have one reprieve but it will be sometime in the future, but not now. Science and technology is getting nearer and nearer to the possibility of a wonder drug with the ever-increasing understanding of the human genotype and genetic engineering. But in reality, who would ever wish or want to be dependent on diet drugs, potentially an ongoing daily basis, simply because of a lack of understanding about the relationship between the food our body has been designed for, and the food we eat. Why is it, we knowingly overeat when we know it is bad for us and that we are doing harm to ourselves? Why is it, that the only time we choose to ignore our food is the time when we are eating it!

So, is it a psychological thing, a physical thing or is it both?

In order to answer this we must first look at the change in our diet over the last 50 years. Consumption trends of refined carbohydrates such as sugar has risen dramatically, but at the same time the consumption of fats and proteins has remained reasonably stable. Saturated fats has indeed become and still is a problem although thankfully now overall consumption of saturated fats has dropped slightly, but still remains an issue.

Many studies particularly those associated with research in how the Atkins diet worked revealed that the effect of refined carbohydrates and fats both have a form of addiction associated with them. Studies have shown that refined sugars have the effect of playing havoc with the fine balance of maintaining the level of glucose in the bloodstream. This in turn has a detrimental effect on our hormonal activity, such as insulin and glucagon which are both responsible for maintaining the level of glucose to its normal level following a “surge” intake of refined carbohydrates in our diet. These acceptable levels of glucose in the bloodstream are maintained at surprisingly narrow margins.

Refined sugars therefore induces excessive hormonal activity in its attempt to restore homeostasis. These unnatural “swings” in hormonal activity often cause differing mood swings from that of being happy and content to being sad, on edge, and even feelings of anxiety or panic. Prolonged exposure to these hormonal swings can often lead to the whole process becoming less effective and subsequently diabetes can be the end result.

Other studies have shown surprisingly that the effect of eating significant quantities of fats actually leads to an unexpected human reaction in terms of nutrition. You would think that eating food rich in fats would have the effect of satisfying feeling of hunger. But amazingly medical research has shown the opposite to be true. Clinical trials have shown that foods rich in fats actually induces people to eat more not less. At the time the results from such experiments were groundbreaking as they completely contradicted the nutritional thinking of the time.

It is also interesting to learn that further medical studies have suggested that foods rich in protein have been linked to the response that indicates that you have consumed sufficient food. In other words, it is believed that proteins in some way, triggers the “I am full” response.

And then of course there is the massive change in our energy expenditure. We used to hunt and gather food but now we happily pop to the local supermarket to buy it, or at worse, have it delivered to our front door. Food has changed from being scarce to being in abundance (at least for us), and we have changed from being “active” to relatively “dormant”. Move less and eat more - what should we expect?

And many believe that even the act of not exercising can trigger the bodily response to lower the metabolism and build fat layers under the skin for 2 key reasons, both being linked to human survival. In evolutionary terms, it may be that you are unable to “hunt” and therefore unable to secure food. Reducing the metabolic rate of your body makes total sense to preserve energy. Secondly, if food is available during a spell of non activity, does it not make a whole load of sense to lay down fat layers under the skin to retain bodily heat and secure an energy source during potential “lean times”. Perfect sense, perfect design and yet we don’t understand ourselves and if we do, many choose to ignore the warning signs out body is offering.

In essence therefore, it is very clear that part of the problem within the dieting world that we humans face is certainly a physical one that is linked to the interaction of the food types we eat with that of our body. And clearly, over the last 50 odd years our diet has changed out of all recognition and yet our body is doing the same as it has been doing for well over the last 100,000 years. We are in the 21st century, our body is still in the “Stone Age”. Evolution is a slow slow process but over millions of years the relationship and reaction of chemicals in our food with the cells of the human body has been cemented and cast, for eons of time.

So, it is us that need to change - because Mother Nature will not entertain us for thousands of years to come!

Run with it, eat what your body has been designed for and successful weight loss will follow for sure!
