Having been a professional actor since 1987, Bryan supplemented his income – between roles – by working in various sales, marketing and customer care jobs.

LINDA PALFREEMAN

Linda Palfreeman was born and raised in Teesside, before moving to Leeds. After completing Degrees in Media and Linguistics she taught at secondary school and university level, before moving to Spain. She now teaches Advertising and English at the University of Cardenal Herrera, Elche.

Baja with the family pets in tow, she enjoys tackling DIY building projects and researching into the Spanish Civil War. Linda spent her first years as an ‘expat’ in Albatera, in the province of Alicante, an experience which inspired the first of her Spanish memoirs, ‘Costa Blanca Christmas’, a light-hearted account of a British family’s move from the
cold and damp of Yorkshire to the warm and welcoming shores of Spain’s Costa Blanca.

The family later moved to Catral, the small town set to become the centre of one of the biggest housing scandals in Spain and the setting for Crisis in Catral. The illegal housing situation has caused, and is continuing to cause to this day, very real anguish for many innocent people caught up in a network of mass deception from which there is no easy escape. Through her writing, Linda seeks not to make light of the desperate circumstances, but merely to use humour as a means of helping to deal with the unpleasant predicament in which, like numerous others, she and her mother presently find themselves.

According to Unison (the public sector union), reports of bullying have doubled in the past ten years. Their survey of 7,000 workers found that more than one in three people had been victims of bullying in the past six mo

nths.

Dr Daniel Scott, author of ‘Verbal Self Defense in The Workplace’, says: “With the current financial climate, extra pressure has been put on managers and workers to get results. This has led to more aggressive targets, increased pressure, more criticism of co-workers and a very real concern for job security.”

With a general increase in stress and a call for cuts across the board, Daniel believes these conditions can bring out the worst in workplace bullies.

“Some bullies, particularly in line-management positions, see the current financial climate as justification to give co-workers a hard time. They’ll use people’s fear of losing their jobs as a stick to beat them with and may even decide to ‘clear out the trash’ by making their target’s work-life hell.”

This, added to the fact that unemployment is on the rise, creates a ‘me or them’ mentality amongst some workers leading to deliberate attempts to undermine what some people see as their rivals.

In Daniel’s new book, he lays out a 6-step system for freeing yourself from workplace bullying. Below are a few of his favourite side techniques for regaining the upper hand.

1. Say Nothing: Stoic entrenchment is about being unwilling to communicate – the result will be to shift more of the power and control within the conversation to you.

2. Withdraw Gracefully: Tactical withdrawal is having a predetermined excuses for you to leave the situation or put the conversation on hold until later.

3. Positive Intent: Putting the focus on what the bully is trying to accomplish through his or her bullying behaviors enables you to set the direction of the conversation towards what they want rather than focusing on their “problem” with you.

4. Set Compliance Conditions: Any time a bully gives one of their “problems” use a conditional closing statement which resolves their “problem” if they agree to change their bullying behaviour in some way. As an example… “So, if I [whatever they asked for], then you agree to [whatever you want]?”

5. Turn Their Behaviour Back On Them: When a bully refuses to acknowledge the existence of a problem it may be necessary to bring the behavior out in the open by labelling it in such a way that it would hurt their self image. You don’t need to be rude or unprofessional, here’s an example: “I really believe that telling everyone in the office I steal stuff when it’s not true is very childish and
immature. Why do you need to be like that?”
