23rd Birthday

It's now a couple weeks AFTER I was supposed to post this, but I'm finally here to share my song for this year. I actually didn't have to think about this one at all.

On my birthday we went to Sophia's fifth birthday party, which was just my parents' life group getting together for dinner. We then had cake for Soph. She started to cry when we started singing to her (just like she did last year), so they sang to me instead. Lol! I left there early to go over to my friend Allison's apartment since she was having a group of girls over for HER birthday. It was a lot of my college friends that were there. When I got there, we played some games and then they sang to both Allison and I. Bekah had texted me when I was driving around trying to find a parking space (it seriously took me 15-20 minutes to find a spot since it's right on the edge of campus) and told me that I better be there at some point since she had something for me. Before I left, she gave me a bag. Inside she had handwritten the lyrics to the song "Gold" by Britt Nicole. On the back she wrote the following letter:

Leanne,

I heard this song on the radio and immediately thought of you. Since it is your birthday I through it was the perfect time to give you these lyrics. I sincerely pray that this song blesses you and you remember that you are worth more than gold- especially when you feel discouraged.

I believe Britt Nicole wrote this song with 1 Peter 2:9 and Psalm 8:5 in mind, both which talk about us being royalty as sons and daughters of God.

Isn't that sweet?! She knows me so well. Seriously, something so "simple" as this handwritten page with a couple scrapbooking stickers on the edge was one of the best gifts I was given. It doesn't take much to bless someone immensely. So, this became my song for this year.

Each year I keep thinking that I should wait until the following year to decide on the year's song, but I never do that. Oh well. I really should do a song more about making the jump into "real life" with teaching, but since this was given to me as a birthday gift, I can't ignore it.

So Kim had this amazingly awesome idea several years ago of doing an entry with a song that represented each year of my life so far. Thank you for the wonderful idea!

Most of the song titles will have a link attached to them that will take you to that song on my other blog that I have. The lyrics to the song and a video (so you can hear it too) will be there in case you don't recognize the name of any of these songs.

1 year old- "I Love the Mountains"- This is the song that my mom used to sing to me when I was a little girl. When I could talk, I would sing it along with her. I find myself singing this to the kids I baby-sit from time-to-time.

2 years old- "The Barney Song"- I don't have a link to this one because I figured most of you know it. Barney was my favorite TV show back then. I had several movies and had to watch Barney as often as I could. (Jen and I had to take turns on what show we got to watch each day.)

3 years old- "Under the Sea"- The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie when I was little. I still love it. This is my favorite song off that movie. I even had a Little Mermaid birthday when I was 3 and had just about everything Ariel possible. It's so fun to play this song on the piano.

4 years old- "Be My Little Baby Bumblebee"- This was the year that I started taking dance lessons. This is the song that we first danced to for our first dance recital. I still have some of the steps memorized since I practiced the dance so much in my excitement. I still have the tiny costume that I wore and even those itty-bitty tap shoes. I'm so bummed that I never kept any of my other tap shoes. I'd love to put on my last pair again and tap some more.

5 years old- "Follow Love"- We packed up all of our stuff and moved away from all of our family and friends this year for the sake of our small family of 4. That is why this song is so perfect for that time in our life. It's one of my favorite FFH songs, and I LOVE to play it on the piano, especially the opening measures.

6 years old- "House Like That"- I picked this song because we were still trying to settle into our new home at this point and were trying to establish ourselves down here in Indiana.

7 years old- "Before All Time"- There is no link to this song because I couldn't find the lyrics or a video of the song online. It was a VBS song that we did around this time in my life. When we got to our new church and I was old enough to be a VBS leader, we did this same VBS at this church. I was so excited, and I grew to love this song even more. VBS has always been a huge part of my life and still is. Jen and I are usually leaders together.

8 years old- "Wannabe"- Now this song does not symbolize anything in my life at that time, other than it was a huge song back then, along with the whole Spice Girls CD it came off of. Allison, Lauren, Jen, and I loved to dance around and sing this song and the others. My mom even joined us one time. Lol. Oh the memories!

9 years old- "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)"- Again, it doesn't symbolize my life, but our whole family loved the entire album it came off of at that time. I think we had the words to all of the songs on that CD memorized. I remember singing this song from the backseat of our Astro van on the way to Mackinac one time. I also remember when we took Allison and Lauren camping with us one year and we were all squished into the Explorer together. We had the windows down, music blaring, as all 6 of us were singing these songs at the top of our lungs...as we drove through Amish country. LOL!

10 years old- "The Way You Love Me"- Yet again, one that was a big hit in our family around that time. We all loved this song in particular off Faith Hill's Breathe CD. We still have that one memorized.

*Can you tell not a lot happened that was noteworthy during that little chunk of my life? Lol.*

11 years old- "Friends"- This was the year I "graduated" from elementary school. And my best friend moved away. The end of that school year was bittersweet. I have only seen her once since then. But it was also the year I met my new best friend, Alicia. So that's why I chose this song.

12 years old- "Born Again"- I asked the Lord into my heart for the first "official" time when I was 12. I had already been living my life for God, but I had never formally prayed "the prayer".

13 years old- "Dancing Queen"- This was the last year I took dance lessons. I miss dance so much, but I stopped because of the people- not the dances. I also had a solo in our tap number that year, so it was a wonderful way to finish out my dancing career. You have no idea what an honor it was for me to get the tap solo in the particular class that I was in. I still can't believe it 7 years later. Lol.

14 years old- "8th Grade"- I couldn't resist putting this song up since this is when I was in 8th grade. That was a good year for me. I was surrounded by lots of friends and had a fairly good group of teachers.

15 years old- "Princes and Frogs"- This song makes me laugh, but it is so true. If you haven't heard it before, you really need to click on the link and listen to it. I always think of several of the Bible studies that we did when I hear this song. It really relates to some of the topics our books focused on. We held the Bible studies at our house for several years. I loved having everyone over to our house.

16 years old- "Broken and Beautiful"- I was somewhere around this age when I went on one of our January youth retreats, and God really spoke to me through this song and the message that was shared that night, given by both our youth pastor and his BIL. It was truly a beautiful moment in my life.

17 years old- "The Hand that Holds the World"- The summer I was 17, I went with some of our youth group to Nazarene Youth Conference in St. Louis with 10,000 other Nazarene teens. It's our national convention that's held only once every 4 years. The group Starfield was there with us that week, and they played this song fairly frequently. It was a profound week for me where God really spoke to me once again.

18 years old- "I Believe in You"- This is the song Steven Curtis Chapman wrote for his oldest daughter when she graduated from high school. This is the year I obviously graduated from high school and made the big transition over to college. Yikes! This song was a beautiful reminder of how much God supports us every step of the way.

19 years old- "The Climb"- This was a year of great growth for me as an individual. I had...well, a lot of...growing/learning/teaching opportunities through this year. Lots of things- big and little. God just kept shaping me as an individual throughout this past year.

20 years old- "I Promise"- This is a song that Kris originally shared with me. It has really meant a lot to me ever since as I wait for the man God created for me.

21 years old- "Me Against the World"- Teresa, my mentor for many years, first introduced me to this song in a Bible study. It felt fitting last year around my birthday as I was dealing with teaching and all my frustrations. (Or, that's what I said in a comment to Melissa when she asked what the song for the year was going to be. I honestly don't remember exactly what I was referring to there, but the song still fits how I felt/feel in general.)

22 years old- "Someone Worth Dying For"- This year was big in that I graduated from college and moved onto the next phase of my life. Click on the link to read more about why this song is significant to me.

23 years old- "Gold"- As I shared above, this song was given to me as a gift from my friend Rebekah.

What was the last thing that made you cry?
I caught the last half of The Last Song last night on TV. I could have cried a lot more over it, but I kept telling myself not to cry and managed to hold back most of the tears. Haha.

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Cleaning the bathroom floors.

What is your favorite form of exercise?
Work-out videos, riding my bike, dancing...

What is your current desktop picture?

You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart now. Where are you gonna go?
Disney World. One of my favorite places. Seriously. That is, I'd go there if I had someone to go with me. If I was going somewhere alone, I'd probably just pick somewhere on the beach where I could go and read.

New Year's Survey

I'm still sorting through pictures from Alicia's bridal shower to post. In typical Gehrke fashion, we had way too many pictures from that day. I'm also still working on my Year in Review post. Okay, so I haven't touched it since August , but it's coming. I decided to fill this out tonight because I wanted something easy to do. It ended up being way more thought-provoking than I thought it would be. My brain is rather tired right now, but I tried my best. Thanks, Melissa, for this great survey!

1. What did you do in 2012 that you had never done before? I had a real, true job interview for something other than just a part-time job. And, of course, I started teaching!!

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I've never made New Year’s resolutions. Maybe I should… My goal for this year is to worry less (what our sermon was about last Sunday) and trust in God more. To find contentment in my life.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Yeah! My “sister” Toby had my third niece Makayla on June 29!

4. Did anyone close to you die? Yes, my great aunt Esther. She was an amazing, amazing, amazing woman of God. She was the great aunt that I was the closest to, even though I have only actually seen her a few times in my life since she lived in Iowa. But, she was always so interested and involved in my life. What a sweet woman.

5. What countries and/or states did you visit? No countries outside the US. States- Michigan and Indiana mostly. We did drive to Florida for the first time (we usually fly), so whatever states we drove through to get to FL (I wasn't paying attention- I was reading and doing homework!). The only states we spent the night in coming and going were Kentucky and Tennessee- both of which I’ve been in before.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012? A boyfriend. Ha! Seriously, though, I can’t think of anything big that I really want. Other than a job since my current one is temporary.

7. What date from 2012 will remain etched in your memory, and why? July 14, 2012- Alicia’s wedding day. It was such an emotional, amazing, special day. I can’t wait to blog more about it.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Graduating college!! What a long time coming.

9. What was your biggest failure? Procrastinating/not staying on top of things.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Just the usual-allergies/asthma/sinus issues year-round.

11. What was the best thing you bought? My iPhone- I am so disappointed in myself. I was NOT going to get one. I was trying to avoid the darn things, but I gave in to peer pressure (aka my family) and bought one with all of them. Hahaha.

12. What was the best thing someone gave you? The bookshelf full of books that were left in my classroom for me to KEEP- not just use this year but actually take with me! I already had hundreds of books, but that was seriously amazing.

13. Were you lucky in love or lucky in cards? Ummm, neither???

14. Where did most of your money go? My classroom! Do you know how many hundreds of dollars it takes to start up a classroom??? It’s ridiculousness!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? My teaching job!!! Getting the first job I interviewed for!

16. What song will always remind you of 2012? Oh golly. I don’t know. I’ll decide that on April 20^th when I do the next edition of My Life in Songs.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

Happier or Sadder? Happier!
Older or wiser? Hmm, I’d say both.
Thinner or fatter? I really don’t know. I stay about the same all the time.
Richer or poorer? Both. Ha. I make waaaaaaaaaay more money than I was last year, but now I have all those lovely things called student loans that I’m having to pay on now.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Spend more time with God. Hands down.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Procrastinating. As Melissa said, wasting time on the computer.

20. How did you spend Christmas? Dec. 23 with the Gehrkes. Dec. 24 with Dad’s huge extended family. Dec. 25 with my family in the morning and Nana and Boppa in the evening. Dec. 26 with our “adopted family”- Carly and Mallory’s family.

21. How did you spend New Year's Eve? I had dinner with Nathan and Alicia while they were in town. Then they came back to our house for dessert, where my parents and sister were entertaining a whole houseful of people from church! There were 21 of us with Nathan and Alicia included.

22. Did you fall in love in 2012? Nope.

23. Did you fall out of love in 2012? Negative.

24. What was your favorite TV program? Dancing with the Stars, Castle, Body of Proof, NCIS.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? I sure hope not.

26. What was the best book you read? Ohhhhh don’t ask me that. I read a couple new books every week. How could I possibly choose?!

27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Discovery?! I don’t know! I can’t remember what I’m listening to now that I wasn’t last year. Whatever is on the radio. Lol.

28. What did you want and get? An electric pencil sharpener for my classroom. Seriously. The hand-crank one in my room is a piece o’ crap. Even the adults that walk into my room and try to use it complain about it.

29. What did you want and not get? Nothing really.

30. What was your favorite film of this year? I didn’t see any movies in theater. Pathetic. I don’t even think I saw any new movies, as in “newly released”. I don’t have time for movies anymore! Ohh, this winter break I did get to watch some Hallmark Christmas movies, though!

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I’m 22. My birthday was my last day of student teaching, so it was rather bittersweet. I spent it celebrating my last day with the awesome people in the special ed room and saying good-bye to all my kidlets.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? I suppose if I had fallen in love. I can’t really think of anything else. I am so extremely blessed to have gotten a job so quickly!!

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012? Teaching clothes. Haha. I’m really big into accessories right now-leggings, scarves, rings, bracelets, and headbands are my latest obsessions.

34. What kept you sane? My family and friends.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I agree with Melissa- I don’t follow celebrities. I’m so out of the loop!

36. What political issue stirred you the most? Oh boy, I don’t know. I suppose anything with the election. I viewed it through a whole new set of eyes this year as I had to teach my kiddos about it as we went through the whole thing.

37. Who did you miss? My friends who have moved away. Growing up can really stink.

38. Who was the best new person you met? Evan- Jen’s friend. I didn’t really make any new friends this year outside of her. I mean, I have truly enjoyed getting to know all the teachers at the school I’m at, but I don’t feel super close to any of them. Well, I do enjoy Maria, the lady I work with and have definitely gotten to know her the best!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012: I’d say the whole graduating/interviewing/preparing for teaching/starting teaching process. It’s been a very humbling experience. I have learned all over again that even when I feel completely unworthy and inadequate, God sees so much more and has far greater things planned for me.

I just realized that I haven't blogged since my birthday in April. Oops. So I'm copying over last year's year in review from my other blog, just to feel slightly accomplished. I realized I had never finished typing it up, so I finally did that last month.

2011 Year in Review

My 22nd Birthday

Wow. Today is my 22nd birthday. What a surreal feeling to be saying that. I can't believe I'm 22...or will be at 7:33 tonight. I've always thought of that age as truly being an adult since that's when you graduate from college. I guess graduating from college has always seemed like that makes you an adult for whatever reason in my strange little mind. So here I am. 22.

Fun fact of the day: I was born on a Friday, and today is Friday!

We had a FABULOUS time in Florida, to say the least. Seriously, A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

Today is also my last day of student teaching. Say WHAT?! How on earth did that happen?! I can't believe I am already done teaching. Break out the kleenex, folks, for today I have to say good-bye to all my little kidlets. I'll be back, of course, to visit before the end of the year, but today seems so FINAL. *sob*

Back to my birthday, though. I wanted to share this list of songs that I've shared the last two years. A lot of you have seen it, but I wanted to officially add last year's song AND this year's song to the list.

So Kim had this amazingly awesome idea of doing an entry with a song that represented each year of my life so far. Thank you for the wonderful idea!

Most of the song titles will have a link attached to them that will take you to that song. The lyrics to the song and a video (so you can hear it too) will be there in case you don't recognize the name of any of these songs.

1 year old- "I Love the Mountains"- This is the song that my mom used to sing to me when I was a little girl. When I could talk, I would sing it along with her. I find myself singing this to the kids I baby-sit from time-to-time.
2 years old- "The Barney Song"- I don't have a link to this one because I figured most of you know it. Barney was my favorite TV show back then. I had several movies and had to watch Barney as often as I could. (Jen and I had to take turns on what show we got to watch each day.)
3 years old- "Under the Sea"- The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie when I was little. I still love it. This is my favorite song off that movie. I even had a Little Mermaid birthday when I was 3 and had just about everything Ariel possible. It's so fun to play this song on the piano.
4 years old- "Be My Little Baby Bumblebee"- This was the year that I started taking dance lessons. This is the song that we first danced to for our first dance recital. I still have some of the steps memorized since I practiced the dance so much in my excitement. I still have the tiny costume that I wore and even those itty-bitty tap shoes. I'm so bummed that I never kept any of my other tap shoes. I'd love to put on my last pair again and tap some more.
5 years old- "Follow Love"- We packed up all of our stuff and moved away from all of our family and friends this year for the sake of our small family of 4. That is why this song is so perfect for that time in our life. It's one of my favorite FFH songs, and I LOVE to play it on the piano, especially the opening measures.
6 years old- "House Like That"- I picked this song because we were still trying to settle into our new home at this point and were trying to establish ourselves down here in Indiana.
7 years old- "Before All Time"- There is no link to this song because I couldn't find the lyrics or a video of the song online. It was a VBS song that we did around this time in my life. When we got to our new church and I was old enough to be a VBS leader, we did this same VBS at this church. I was so excited, and I grew to love this song even more. VBS has always been a huge part of my life and still is. Jen and I are usually leaders together.
8 years old- "Wannabe"- Now this song does not symbolize anything in my life at that time, other than it was a huge song back then, along with the whole Spice Girls CD it came off of. Allison, Lauren, Jen, and I loved to dance around and sing this song and the others. My mom even joined us one time. Lol. Oh the memories!
9 years old- "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)"- Again, it doesn't symbolize my life, but our whole family loved the entire album it came off of at that time. I think we had the words to all of the songs on that CD memorized. I remember singing this song from the backseat of our Astro van on the way to Mackinac one time. I also remember when we took Allison and Lauren camping with us one year and we were all squished into the Explorer together. We had the windows down, music blaring, as all 6 of us were singing these songs at the top of our lungs...as we drove through Amish country. LOL!
10 years old- "The Way You Love Me"- Yet again, one that was a big hit in our family around that time. We all loved this song in particular off Faith Hill's Breathe CD. We still have that one memorized.
*Can you tell not a lot happened that was noteworthy during that little chunk of my life? Lol.*
11 years old- "Friends"- This was the year I "graduated" from elementary school. And my best friend moved away. The end of that school year was bittersweet. I have only seen her once since then. But it was also the year I met my new best friend, Alicia. So that's why I chose this song.
12 years old- "Born Again"- I asked the Lord into my heart for the first "official" time when I was 12. I had already been living my life for God, but I had never formally prayed "the prayer".
13 years old- "Dancing Queen"- This was the last year I took dance lessons. I miss dance so much, but I stopped because of the people- not the dances. I also had a solo in our tap number that year, so it was a wonderful way to finish out my dancing career. You have no idea what an honor it was for me to get the tap solo in the particular class that I was in. I still can't believe it 7 years later. Lol.
14 years old- "8th Grade"- I couldn't resist putting this song up since this is when I was in 8th grade. That was a good year for me. I was surrounded by lots of friends and had a fairly good group of teachers.
15 years old- "Princes and Frogs"- This song makes me laugh, but it is so true. If you haven't heard it before, you really need to click on the link and listen to it. I always think of several of the Bible studies that we did when I hear this song. It really relates to some of the topics our books focused on. We held the Bible studies at our house for several years. I loved having everyone over to our house.
16 years old- "Broken and Beautiful"- I was somewhere around this age when I went on one of our January youth retreats, and God really spoke to me through this song and the message that was shared that night, given by both our youth pastor and his BIL. It was truly a beautiful moment in my life.
17 years old- "The Hand that Holds the World"- The summer I was 17, I went with some of our youth group to Nazarene Youth Conference in St. Louis with 10,000 other Nazarene teens. It's our national convention that's held only once every 4 years. The group Starfield was there with us that week, and they played this song fairly frequently. It was a profound week for me where God really spoke to me once again.
18 years old- "I Believe in You"- This is the song Steven Curtis Chapman wrote for his oldest daughter when she graduated from high school. This is the year I obviously graduated from high school and made the big transition over to college. Yikes! This song was a beautiful reminder of how much God supports us every step of the way.
19 years old- "The Climb"- This was a year of great growth for me as an individual. I had...well, a lot of...growing/learning/teaching opportunities through this year. Lots of things- big and little. God just kept shaping me as an individual throughout this past year.
20 years old- "I Promise"- This is a song that Kris originally shared with me. It has really meant a lot to me ever since as I wait for the man God created for me.
21 years old- "Me Against the World"- Teresa, my mentor for many years, first introduced me to this song in a Bible study. It felt fitting last year around my birthday as I was dealing with teaching and all my frustrations. (Or, that's what I said in a comment to Melissa when she asked what the song for the year was going to be. I honestly don't remember exactly what I was referring to there, but the song still fits how I felt/feel in general.)
22 years old- "Someone Worth Dying For"- I think I'm going to go with this song, unless I come up with a better one to signify graduating from college and moving on to the next phase of my life. Any suggestions? If not, this one definitely is significant for me. Click on the link to read more about that.

Wow, I haven't posted a song since October. It's about time I posted another one. Visit that entry for an explanation on the "days" attached to these songs if you've forgotten. I don't feel like explaining again. ;-)

This song really spoke to me on our return trip from our Ohio vacation last summer. I had heard this song many times before that, but for whatever reason (I know- it was God- not just a "whatever reason"), that time it smacked me in the face. We had already crossed into the Huntington county borders, were soooo close to home, anxiously anticipating being reunited with our pastor's family, Nana and Boppa, and Carly and Mal's family, when this song came on the radio. And just like that, it had me in tears as the words sunk in. Pass the kleenex please!

A Time I Laughed

Today I was grading writing prompts at school and just had to e-mail myself this one little girl's story. The topic was "A Time I Laughed". The story itself isn't really funny. I just loved her spelling. I'll show you exactly how she wrote it and then a translation underneath, just in case you didn't get it.

"My ante debey grapol me mom and dad I what to the zoo and I got to see the pengwhens wen I whus 4 yes old I dropt cotin candey on my hed and I crat up lafing I felt varey happey be kus is whus fun gowing to the zoo then I got to get a stoft atomol pingwen."

My aunt Debbie, Grandpa, me, Mom, and Dad went to the zoo, and I got to see the penguins when I was 4 years old. I dropped cotton candy on my head, and I cracked up laughing. I felt very happy because it was fun going to the zoo. Then I got to get a stuffed animal penguin.

Last night I read over the story the kids wrote as a class because I had to read it to them this morning. I wanted to translate it on my own before trying to read it out loud. I called in Mom and Jen to help me on some of them, but they couldn't even help me for a few kids. We had quite a time trying to figure it all out. Lol.

Christmas Card Blues

Merry Christmas! This story always makes me laugh and get mortified all at the same time. I hope that this was NOT the case for all of you this year...

I was taking a shower when my 2-year-old son came into the bathroom and wrapped himself in toilet paper.

Although he made a mess, he looked adorable, so I ran for my camera and took a few shots.

They came out so well that I had copies made and included one with each of our Christmas cards.

Days later, a relative called about the picture, laughing hysterically and suggesting I take a closer look.

Puzzled, I stared at the photo and was shocked to discover that in addition to my son, I had captured my reflection in the mirror ---wearing nothing but a camera!

My Answers:

1. Red or Green? Red! My favorite color is pink, so naturally I go with red at Christmas time. :)

2. Favorite Christmas Carol? Oooh, that is a tough one. Ever since I was little, I have LOVED Christmas music and sing it year-round. But if I have to choose, I'd say "O Holy Night". I love playing that song on the piano.

3. What do I want for Christmas? Books! Plus, I'm getting a GPS from my parents, which I'm rather excited about. I tend to get lost easily.

4. Favorite Holiday Treat? My grandma's peanut butter balls and all of her Christmas cookies! Ohhh, and her Christmas jell-o! And cheesy potatoes. I know- not really a treat, but I think they are. ;-)

5. Favorite Holiday Tradition? I really like getting all dressed up on Christmas Eve and going over to my dad's cousin's house. There are usually about 60 of us over there. We have a lot of fun together. :)

Neglected

This poor blog gets so neglected. But if it's any consolation, my other (primary) blog has been almost just as neglected lately. This semester has just been insane for me. It was supposed to be an easy one, but I just had so many other things besides school going on. This week is finals week, so maybe I'll have a little more time after this to blog??? Nahhhh, I wouldn't count on it. ;-) Then I'm going into student teaching. Eeeeeeeek, hang onto your hats, folks! I certainly won't have time for blogging then! So, this is just to let you know that I am indeed alive. I'm just too busy to blog. :)

Not Me Monday- Happy Halloween!

First of all, Happy Halloween everyone!

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have NOT been doing this week.

Where we live, people trick-or-treat on the 30th AND the 31st. My sister and I were in charge of dividing up the candy between our family members and then the bucket of candy for trick-or-treaters. We did NOT save all of the good candy for us and give the kids only the cheap stuff. That wouldn't be nice. We would NEVER be that selfish.
I certainly didn't make a dent in my bag of candy after eating so much of it yesterday. Why would I consume that much candy in one day??
When I got back to school and was offered a cupcake by my roommate, I did NOT eat a cupcake heaping with frosting after telling her I didn't need one. After all I don't even like frosting! I didn't need to add any more to my sugar intake for the day after all that candy!
On a healthy note, I have taken up exercising again. I most certainly do NOT use my mom's old workout videos from the 80s to exercise to. There are much newer, more modern workout videos out there. I definitely do NOT still use all of Denise Austin's old workout VHS tapes since I do have a full gym to use right across campus. I do NOT wait until my roommate is gone for the evening before pulling out said tapes to exercise to because I am NOT ashamed of using such tapes.
I'm leaving for a conference in a couple of days. I have NOT left deciding on a dress and a decades dance costume for the last minute. I need time to figure those things out, so I would NEVER wait until a couple days before I leave to start thinking about what to wear. I am NOT actually contemplating pulling out some old dance recital costumes to use for the decades dance. Those costumes are from many years ago, so I would NEVER actually think about trying to squeeze into any of them. I'm supposed to be making a good impression at this professional conference, so I would NOT actually think about taking something that could be potentially embarrassing.

I'm heading home now to go greet some cute trick-or-treaters that I love!

Not Me Monday- All About Baby Gifts

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to her blog to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.

1. I would NEVER spend most of my free time online looking for baby gifts. I'm not even married yet, so why would I already need so many baby gifts?? Most college students can think of many other ways to spend their time.

2. I did NOT spend most of yesterday entering giveaways and bidding on auctions on Facebook, causing me to get very little studying in for my 1 Peter test today. Nope, I would never do that. I'm much too responsible for that. And I would NOT feel justified in my actions because I ended up scoring some awesome deals for gifts. Who would do such a thing?!

3. I most certainly would NOT have already found a ton of baby gifts for my friend Alicia. After all, her fiance/soon-to-be husband and her aren't planning on having kids until after law and med school, which will be at least another 8 years or so! I would never already have scouted out tons of baby gifts for them. (Disclaimer: I haven't actually bought any of those gifts for her, even though I've been sorely tempted to.)

4. I definitely did NOT buy a gift for a friend to send to her when her next baby is born BEFORE she even got pregnant. Who does such a thing?? (For the record, she announced that she was pregnant again a short couple of weeks after I bought er, did NOT buy, her the gift. Beautiful timing.)

5. It did NOT take me until my friend's baby was 6 weeks old to get her new baby package sent out to her. I would NEVER wait that long, knowing it would take some time to get to her since she lives all the way across the country.

'Tis all for today. I decided to just stick with the baby gifts theme since I already had several of those. I'll do the rest of mine next week hopefully. :)

Day 182- Jesus Will Still Be There

I totally fell off the bandwagon with posting 365 songs. Yes, it is technically supposed to be done within a year, but I just plain didn't have time for that last year! So I got up into the 170s, I think before the end of the year, but I wasn't about to admit defeat. I determined that I was going to post those 365 stinkin' songs no matter how long it took me! Lol. Well, I was so burnt out by posting songs that after January of this year, I determined I needed a break. I never intended to take THIS long of a break, but it is what it is. Now here I am. FINALLY prepared to post another song. I'm not giving myself any deadlines on this because Heaven knows that would just stress me out even more. So we'll see how long this takes me to finish. Not Me Monday

I have never done a Not Me post before, so I decided to do one today. Why not? Not Me! Monday was started by MckMama. You can visit her blog to read other people's Not Me Monday entries, too!

1. I am not using writing this post as an excuse for not doing something more productive, like exercising, studying, doing a project, or grading papers. Why would I procrastinate???

2. I did not wait until 2 days before a major project was due to even start on it. And I definitely did NOT leave 75% of it until the day before it is do to actually finish it.

3. When two families asked me to baby-sit their 4 children combined today for 4 hours, I did NOT tell them no because I had this project to work on...and then proceed to waste most of that time doing nothing related to this project. I would never choose to sit down with a good book (one I've already read several times before, in fact) and read that instead of working on that project. And I certainly wouldn't lay down while reading and fall asleep for 15 minutes.

4. I absolutely never wait until the trashcan is practically overflowing in our dorm room and fills up 4 grocery sacks before taking it out to the dumpster when my roommate fails to do so after promising to do it many times. And I certainly wouldn't let this happen over and over again.

5. My bed does NOT only get its sheets changed once a month when I know that I need to do it weekly because of my severe allergies. My sweeper does not sit idle for a couple weeks at a time when my allergies (and therefore allergist) have dictated that I need to sweep 1-2 times a week.

6. Finally (I could go on and on but I DO have other things I need to be doing), I do not have dirty dishes sitting on top of my refrigerator that have been piling up for over a week now. I have NOT waited that long to do dishes. And I absolutely have not had to reuse some glasses since I ran out of clean ones.

Chicken with Croutons Recipe

A friend had asked for this recipe that I mentioned yesterday in a blog post on my other blog. Since I went home last night anyway, I decided to grab it while I was thinking of it. Jen assisted me with all the details over the phone since the recipe was so vague. :)

We make it in 9x13 pans. 1 pan is plenty for our family, unless we have people over, which we usually do when we make this. Haha. It is a popular dish at our house! We put it in the church recipe book and got a lot of great feedback on it. Then, I gave the recipe to Christa when she got married, and it's one of her husband's favorites.

chicken tenders...as much as you want (We do the tenders since they cook up better.)
1 can cream soup (chicken or mushroom)
1/2 can milk
mont. jack cheese (as much as you want- sliced or shredded)
croutons
butter (half to whole stick of butter)

Mix soup and milk. Pour that over the chicken in the pan. Add cheese over the top. Add croutons over the cheese. Melt the butter and pour over the croutons to make them softer. Bake at 350° for 50 minutes.

Be Thankful or Complain

I never remember to blog over here or copy blog posts over to this blog. And when I do think about it, my latest posts usually contain pictures, so I can't post them over here anyway. Since it had been so long since I updated, I decided to just copy over a random post from my other blog. It was written back in May.

There's a story behind it, but that isn't the point of this entry so I won't go into it. But, we now have DVR. Jen has been recording Oprah each day for a week or so now for the end of her run on her show. We are sitting here tonight watching a couple of those episodes that she had on here. For anyone who saw the show this past week, we just watched the episode with the Rowandan (sp?) family that was separated in the mass killing, the mother who had cancer and made all the videos for her daughter, and the divorced family. Here is the summary of that episode. And then now we are watching the episode with the lady who was burned alive after a drunk driver hit her and lost her face and had to have it rebuilt (Jacqui Saburido), Mattie Stepanek, and Dr. Tererai Trent. As I've sat here crying through these episodes, it just keeps hitting me again and again- What the heck have I ever complained about???? WHY have I complained? These people have suffered through so much and have had such pure JOY in their lives. I am SO blessed. So blessed. I have everything! These people could spend their days complaining and moaning and groaning because of all they've been through, but they don't! I have so very, very much, and yet I complain all day long. I am forever telling Christa, "You're probably sick of me complaining all the time." I seriously must tell her that multiple times a week. Watching these episodes has totally convicted me. I want to remember these stories, these people, when I go to complain.

Yes, I realize we all need time to vent and complain. I don't think it is bad by any means to do so. It's just part of human nature. I don't look down upon ANYONE who complains because, as I've said, I complain all stinkin' day long. But I spend far too much time focusing on the bad. Even if I'm not trying to focus on the bad by complaining, I really sort of am with what I say. Or I am forcing others who hear me to focus on the bad. I don't want to do that anymore. I want to be more thankful for all that God has blessed me with. Because I am B-L-E-S-S-E-D, blessed, blessed. So blessed. I want to focus on that. Not the so called "bad" things in my life. I have got it made! And yet I still complain.

The lady who was burned in her car said that she only allows herself to cry for 5 minutes a day. She will be crying, "Oh look at my face. Oh how I wish I looked like I used to," or something to that effect, and then she will say, "Okay, you're five minutes are over. You're done." Lol. I love that! She did say when she revisited Oprah this year that she now allows herself to cry for longer than that, but still. I love the principle of that. Only focus on the bad long enough to get it out of your system and then MOVE ON. Can I get an "Amen"?
