Idiom definition

An idiom definition is a group of words established. As a group of words form a new meaning.

The meaning of the group of words is different from the meanings of the individual words together.

We can explain idiom definition by this example, you know the meaning of pyramid and cards.

Look at this picture below, this shape of cards is like pyramid.

Many of the words used in idioms come from old English or Middle English also idioms are common in both formal and informal spoken and written English.

Types of idioms:

Simple Present use to talk about everyday and mounts that happen over the time, the action doesn’t have to take the place at the time of speaking.

For example:

We used for a repeated action in an unspecified period between the past and the present.

We used for an action that was completed in the recent past expresed by "Just".

Ex: - I have just finished my homework.

For an action where time is not important ( we are interrested in the result ).

N.B: When we want to give details we do not use the present perfect ( when, where, who ... )

To emphasize the lengh of time of an action.

Ex: - I have been sleeping all day.

I- The form:

It is composed of two parts.
Had + Past participale of the main verb.

II- Uses:

The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before now it's used to make it clear that one even before than other in the past it doesn't matter which event mentioned first, the tebse ( P.P ) makes it clear which which event happen first.

Ex: - John had gone out when I arrived in the office.
- I had saved my document before the computer crashed.
- When they arrived; we had already standed cooking.

We use in the sequence of past event.

Ex: - After I had had a shower, I went to bed.
- Before she got the degree, she had studied four years.
- As soon as he had entered the roo, I pickrd up my books.

Remark:

When we have " After " or " As soon as " in the middle of sentence we can use simple past or past perfect.

Hardly had me arrived than t is started to rain.
Scarely had she left than her husband phoned.

We used in the indirect speech.

Ex: - She explained that she had worked there for 3 years.

Past continuous:

Past continuous use:

- Denotes an action which began before q definite moment in the past, continued up to that moment and was
still going on at the moment.

For example:

We could not go out because it had been raining for two hours.

- Denotes an action
which was no longer going on at a definite moment in the past, but which had
been in progress not long before.

For example:

The baby's face was red and wet. He had been crying.

        --> John told the police that he had been working late that afternoon.

When we have premeditated intention

Predictions

Ex: - The sun is shining, I think it is going to be a pleasant afternoon.

II- The different between will and Be going to:

Be going to è We us itwhen we have a plan \ arrange before.  ( Immediate futur )
Ex: - She avoids smoking because she is going to have a baby.

Will             è We use it in the time of speaking. ( Remote futur)
Ex: - I'm look tired. Sit down and I will make you a cup of tea.

III- Rule:

It is impossible to use in the following cases.

With verbs of mental activity ( know, understand, mean )

Ex: - It's difficult for him, he won't understand .

In the mean clause with "if" and "when" in the subordinate clause.

Ex: - I will lend ( lend ) you my car when you need it.

With the verbs to go and to come it is too heavy and should be avoided.

Ex: - Is coming ( come ) tonight.
- Is going ( go ) to the cinema tomorrow.
