You can find it at amazon if you want, and it does a great job of helping people learn the fretboard. Books can also be an inexpensive yet comfortable strategy to learn how to play the guitar.

Unfortunately, here's the bad news when it comes to learning from a book. Experience has really shown that for many of us, they just plain don't work. However, depending on what type of learner you are, and if you are a very patient person, a theory book might just be one of the best ways to learn guitar for you.

Video Lessons

This is one of my favorite methods when it comes to learning guitar because if you don't understand something or are confused where a finger should be when learning a chord, you can always rewind the video until you have it figure out. You can find video guitar lessons that are available on DVDs or video tapes in nearly every music store, and also on many virtual shops. In addition to those, there are also many video lessons that are available online. Many of them are even free, and do a great job of teaching you about various aspects of the guitar.

Video lessons are much more dynamic and have a higher chance of keeping you focused. It's a given, but if you are a visual learner, you will no doubt be attracted to this style of learning. A big advantage that video lessons have over other styles of learning, is that they allow you to practice at home whenever you find the time for practice. Theory books allow this as well, but it is a completely different style of learning. However, one possible downside is that you won't gain the benefits that you would from the personalized attention and in-depth feedback a teacher will provide.

Private Lessons

If you are in a position to dedicate a lot of time as well as a fair amount of money to this, private lessons are definitely going to be the best way to learn guitar. A good teacher can and should design a customized teaching program which is perfect for your particular learning style. In addition, they will provide you with individualized attention and positive feedback to get you motivated. Lastly, he/she will quickly spot and correct any mistakes they see in your playing technique, and show you how to improve.

Above all though, if you opt to get private lessons from a teacher, you will have the luxary of asking them questions anytime you become stumped and don't understand something. No other style of lessons can provide this, and I am fairly inclined to say that this reason alone makes it stand out above the rest as the best option for learning guitar. But private lessons aren't practical in your situation, don't worry. You will still be able to learn just fine in a variety of other ways.

Learning by Ear

Learning guitar by ear can be tricky but also very fun. If you have any sort of musical bone in your body, you might find this to be the best way to learn guitar for you. With modern technology, it is quite simple to slow the speed of a song allowing you to easily pick out notes. This is far easier now than it was for our parents' generation. Technology truly has come a long way.

You should always keep in mind that playing the guitar should ultimately be fun. If you find that you aren't enjoying yourself, or things have become difficult or stressing, it may come down to the fact that your learning strategy could have a lot to do with it. Sometimes you might have to experiment with several learning methods before finding the one that works best for you. Surprisingly, I think many people don't even know what method of learning works best for them. However, if you truly desire to play the guitar like a pro and have enough time and money, taking up private lessons is probably the best way to go.
