It's Been Months

I'm back on track I think. Been spending most of my time recovering. Three hospital stays, although technically twice I was transferred to a different hospital. Now I do next to nothing, but I'm still alive and hoping to improve.

The kitties still here are many, but they mostly get along okay. I have only 3 around here now not fixed. I can't catch them. They come close, and even come in the house to eat when food runs out in the shed, but I haven't been allowed to pet them yet. Working on it.

Was too sick for a while to do much clicking...but I'm startingt to get caught up.

What to Do When Bored

With my cats, computer, books, beads, wood and sundry other objects, I'm seldom bored. If boredom comes creeping my way, I sneak around the corner to turn my hand at something else. I still miss work, but it is the people I miss, not the work itself.

So today, I was surprised that I actually was sitting at the table thinking I may be bored. Bored...me...yep.

So now I am on a mission to make sure my oldest younger sister has books to read. Tried offering her a cat, but she has three already. No more room. But she will take some books.

Was able to get 4 more cats fixed, 3 girls, 1 boy. Don't think I'll be doing any more right away. It's time for home insurance and car insurance.

All the New Ones

Below I will put links of the programs I used that bought Kibbles this past few weeks. But the bigger news is that I was able to get over 20 spayed or neutered. I have put some I couldn't find homes for on Craigslist and some other lists. Hopefully some will get the homes they need.

I had to borrow cages, and transportation was provided by volunteers. So I'm not claiming I did this all by myself. My grandkids helped trap the wild ones, and cage the not-exactly-tame ones. I just made the arrangements and paid the cash and spent effort to tame them down. I do enjoy living rodent free.

So the kitty situation is not as bad as it was...but it is still overwhelming for me.

Kitty Kibbles

So not being allowed to go back to work has hurt the amount of pocket money for kitty kibbles. But the cats are still here and I cannot stand making them go without food. So the kitties and I had a chat, and we decided with all this extra time, we'd find a way to earn kibbles. Plus the extra to get one spayed or neutered as we can.

Now just keep checking to see how we're doing.
Every time we get kibbles money, it will be posted here first.

Do You Like Cats?

So here it is September, and I need to ready the shed for winter. Put in a heat lamp and some more cat crates, I guess.

Kitty Cat brought in two little black kittens the other day, maybe 7-8 weeks old. Wizard brought in two little striped ones about 5-6 weeks old. These are both big male strays whose owners are gone. I do not have a clue whether they are the dads or just helping out the babies. Either way, I'm swamped now.

I think maybe I can turn the center of the shed into a multi-cat condo tower. If I do this, I'll post pics when it is done. Maybe one in my hallway, also. I don't really know what to do about all the kittens. No one wants them.

Maybe I'll look into becoming a non-profit no-kill cat shelter. Can I do this from home? I already do...LOL...

Cats and Free Things

My birthday was the other day. My daughter and granddaughter made sure I had a nice dinner and a chocolate cake. So I may be older now, but I intend to last much longer. Means more chocolate cake, doesn't it?

Update on mama cat and 4 kittens: only one boy, black, Salem. one black girl, Elvira. one black and orange girl, Eve. one black-grey striped with small bits of orange splashes girl, Rowan. Apparently mama cat was having trouble producing milk. She brought them out of hiding, then crunched up some cat food and laid it on the walkway for them. In the past few days they have learned how to eat dry food, climb up to the water bowl, and how to convince humans to pay attention to them.

Also, some unknown cat dropped a couple more kittens off at the shed: a black one that looks just like my Pixie, all eyes and ears, and another bigger Rowan. No one saw these arrive, nor have we seen a mama checking on them. They aren't friendly to humans yet.

For the next few days, I'll be looking at some free offerings. Today I got Preventing Identity Theft and How to fix Slow Computer Startup and HTML Simplified, all free from here: Gold Peak There was other stuff to choose. These are the ones I wanted to read.

Strange Summer

This has been a strange summer. No garden to tend. No fresh veggies. And no work. I'm still not allowed to go back to work.

I'm still on oxygen 24-7. Guess it could be worse, though. I'm still waking up and motivating(slowly).

There is a small orange cat outside I call Little Bit, because she's only half as big as her sisters. Couldn't get her in a cage when I took her sisters to the vet. So now she has brought over 2 little kittens and after a few days, left them in the shed. Also, a small black and white cat we call Bandit just brought me her 5 kittens. Suppose a name change is in order there.
Then, just a couple days ago, a mama cat carried her new kittens in the shed, put them way in the back behind the boxes and stuff, and won't let other cats in that corner.

Maybe I should just turn the shed into a cathouse. I'm still hoping to get in some program to help me fix all these strays. We have too many cats, way too many kittens, and more keep finding my place.

Glad to be Home

Home...simple four-letter word...means so many different things.

In hospital a few days. Released on 24-7 oxygen and lots of meds and rules, and unfortunately, on steroids still. Released with lots of fear and too few real answers. Then yesterday, went to my doctor's office. Got some answers there.

So today I stand here trying so hard to be a former smoker, knowing I'm killing myself if I light up, and sometimes crying because I'm not completely stopping smoking. I'm trying to quit. I don't want to die yet. But somehow, I can't find the strength to stop. I'm not smoking lots...but if it goes on, I bet it wouldn't be long before I'd just be back to the regular 1-1 1/2 packs a day grind. I don't want to smoke. Smells bad, tastes bad, making me sicker. Just got to keep trying not to smoke.

Cats were glad I came home. They all surrounded me outside and we had a petting session. They told me all their news, but I can't repeat that here. I will say 4 of them beat up a possum trying to empty their bowl in the shed.

The inside cats are becoming more outside cats, which is really better for all of us.
They are all fixed, they all have their shots, they are healthy, and have the cattitudes we've been working on all year. Now they're going to teach the outside cats little ways to make life better.

No big garden this year, sadly. Guess I'll be a better Farmer's Market customer now.

So I'm going to go away now and find something else to do. I'll be back in a day or two.

Long Time Away

Wow...almost 8 months since I did anything here. No excuses.
Went with my granddaughter to get a tattoo on her 15th birthday a couple weeks ago. She got a nice fairy on her calf. Yes, she's young. My daughter and I both got tattoos right along with her.

I got some new toys to play with: scroll saw, bandsaw and a drill press. I'm going to have fun now. Pretty soon I intend to open an Etsy shop and run a few Ebay auctions. Hopefully, it'll really become a family thing.

Get Your Bonuses

It has finally warmed up enough I can walk outside and still breathe. It's been rough this winter for me. I now have to sleep with a CPAP mask, but I no longer wake up with those awful headaches.

Gained a few cats outside over the winter. My shed has become a no-kill cat shelter. I've gotten some fixed and got shots. Somehow I need to find the funds to do more of them. I don't know why people just toss their pets out. Luckily I'm still keeping up with the food. Once in a while I buy chicken to cook for them all, with rice and veggies.

My youngest sister moved in back in November. If she doesn't get a job pretty soon, I'm going off the deep end. It isn't that we don't get along...she needs to work and get a paycheck.

One very sad day earlier this month: Jester kitty had to be put to sleep. He had cancer, and it just got too bad. He was a great cat, always purring, and always taking up for the smaller young ones when they got picked on, even the outside ones. He was old, and his fangs hung below his chin. I miss him. Pixie and Inmate still miss him, also. The others seem okay.

Okay, I'm gonn go take a nap before I gotta go to work.

Garden Class

The gardening class this past Saturday was really informative. We were shown the basics of building the raised beds, and how different types of wood can help or hurt. It was fun, and I've signed up for the whole series. Maybe we can even exchange seeds among the group.

Next class I will be taking some Daikon radishes seeds. I'll even make seed packets to put them in for handing out.

I'm still twittering. Twitter has so much stuff on it, it's amazing. So easy to find things you want to know about.

My cat Snuggles, who has epilepsy, has adjusted well to his medication. He'll never be a normal cat, has very little abilty to balance, and doesn't walk a straight line. But he's lovable, and has made friends with a couple other cats, Pixie and Inmate.

Back to work today. We have a meeting scheduled tonight where the entire shift sits in a circle and everyone can chime in on things happening at work. It's one of the coolest things about our job. We participate. Love that word.

Veggie Garden News

Seems a bit quiet now that it's back to the cats and me. It's rained a lot lately. Sadly, my peas have pretty much laid down and given up. I see yellow leaves everywhere, and can't do anything until tomorrow.

This weekend will be geared toward getting the shed ready for the winter. There has to be somewhere protected for those orange cats. I'll also have to rig up the spots to dry the gourds over the winter.

Looks like I'll have lots of tomatoes and bell peppers, hardly any cucumbers, though. It will be fun to empty the can and see how the sweet potatoes did. I'll need help, I can't even move this can now. Experiments are great. If it works, I'll have sweet potatoes all winter...so much better than white potatoes. (IMO)

This Saturday, I'm going to a class on Raised Bed Gardening at the Board of Health. I never knew there were such things, and I found it online. I'm going to try to make the whole series and learn everything I can. Keeping a notebook for it, also.

Anybody out there want an orange tabby...cute...friendly...?? Or do I have inside and outside cats forever? The old cat lady down the street...I knew her back when...never dreamed I'd become her.

End of Vacation

Ah, well...the shortest week of the year is ending, and after today my place will seem empty and quiet. I'll be taking the two grandkids home, and it'll be back to me and the cats. I'll miss the noise and shared meals...a little bit...

The garden is going strong. Planted some more peas and green beans for freezing. The one thing I'm wondering most about is the sweet potatoes. I put one in a large garbage can, and every time it grew, I put in more soil. Hopefully I'll have a nice mess of them when I dump it out. That'll be so much easier than digging them up out of the ground at season end.

The kitten who came through the cornfield does not act like a kitten. She acts like a much older cat, no playing, no getting into stuff. The kids named her Hippie. Huh?

Guess I'll get the kids motivated to pack their stuff in my blue bubble. Ya'll have a wonderful weekend.

Strange Thing Happened

Outside...sitting under the shade tree with my neighbor, and 3 grandkids. We worked hard outside yesterday, and were cooling off.
I try to feed a few stray cats, and get them tame enough to take for fixing. Hopefully get them homes. I have enough inside cats of my own.

Anyway, we're sitting there enjoying the weather. Already made sure there was food for the 4 orange and whites and the big black cat...the current stray bunch...who eat in the shed. We keep hearing a loud, high-pitched meow, but it isn't any of them. Out of the cornfield behind my place walks this big gray tabby. My neighbor says he lives down the street, the people he owns call him Kitty Kat. I'd never seen him before, but he headed straight for me. Then we saw the source of the meow...he was bringing me a little kitten. I couldn't believe it at first, but he brought it right up, and then sat down and waited. So I picked the little thing up, and took it in to the food bowls. It was starved. It ate like crazy, and I could feel all its bones.

Meanwhile, Kitty Kat still sat. Didn't come to any of us, didn't try to get next to the regular 5 strays. As soon as the kitty got full, she came out of the shed and went and bumped noses with Kitty Kat, who bumped her back and licked her head. Then she turned around and came to me. Kitty Kat watched, not moving. Of course I picked her up and petted her...and when she sat down in my lap, Kitty Kat meowed once, and took a leisurely stroll towards his house. End of story, but beginning of questions.
I was left feeling a bit strange, but almost as if I had been given an honored gift. Needless to say, she is my new inside kitten. Nameless so far, though.

Okay, well it's back to outside work. Today should see the end of the yard work. We'll be making cookies and crafts for the rest of the week.

Summer is Great

It's really nice out. I got in tomatoes and cucumbers. This weekend I'll plant more things. Spaghetti squash, bell peppers, herbs...
People around my new place may be laughing at the way I take my cats for walks with halter and leash. They need to be out some, but I don't let them run loose.

Being Frugal

Frugality is the practice of looking for the least expensive alternatives. Frugality doesn't have to mean being a scrooge or living without comfort. Is it really worth the time and effort you put into things like homemade cleaners and clipping coupons? I say YES it is.

Search the Sunday paper for coupons and clip them out. Make a list of things on sale that you can stock up on in order to get your average cost down. Plan and run a route of four stores in order to get everything where it is the cheapest. Total extra time spent: three hours. Now, save sixty dollars. This translates into twenty dollars an hour-a pretty good deal, don't you think?

Sometimes the small stuff is the big stuff, especially when it is repeated over and over. This is why it makes sense to save money on groceries. They are something you buy every week. Saving sixty dollars every week or two adds up over time. How you do it makes a difference though.

For example, suppose you don't want to clip coupons or spend time looking at sales flyers. Why not invest just an hour or two to figure out which store is cheapest for the things you buy? Then shop only there, and buy more of the things you use and like when they are on sale. You might still save $20 per week, with no additional investment of time. That's $1,040 per year!

You need to sit down and decide how much time you have to spend on your efforts. If you do this and then figure out what your yearly savings can be, you will have a much clearer idea of how you want to proceed. It will also give you encouragement on those days when it feels you are missing out on something.

Always use items that are reusable rather than throw away. You'll find that doing these little things like using real cups and plates instead of paper or plastic throw away, and recycling containers for storage or even to use in craft projects, you can save a lot of money. Each by itself may seem minor, but when put together they can amount to tremendous savings over time.

Don't buy it if you won't use it. Things like small kitchen appliances, repair tools, and gardening tools are good examples. We know they'd make our life easier if we just had the opportunity to use them. Simplify your life and narrow it down to a couple you just can't live without like a can opener and coffee maker.

The above are examples of things you can do to save money on your quest to live the frugal lifestyle. I want to tell you about another frugal activity that can result in hundreds of dollars a year-rebates and coupons. I list both together, because using both, along with your weekly sales ad, is the best way.

Gather all your coupons-you have been clipping them, haven't you?-now check your weekly sales ads and see what items are on sale that you have coupons for. This done, check and see if the store offers double coupons. These are the stores you want to check first. Now go online and put in a search for rebates plus your product. Many will be printable.

This done, do your shopping and mail out your rebate forms, then sit back and relax. Oftentimes. You will find you actually come out ahead in this deal, as the rebate will be the price of the item before the use of the coupon. Now, that is the best example of frugal shopping I've found.

Can You Use Water to Power a Car?

For more than a century, we rely on oil to fuel our cars. But did you know that the world’s oil is close to drying up because it is a nonrenewable resource? Well that may not happen tomorrow or next year but we are getting closer because of the demand in the world market. Why wait for that day when we can rely on a green energy source like water to power our cars.

Water can power a car? If you think that’s impossible...it's already here but this is not yet being done on a commercial scale.

The German automobile BMW has produced the world’s first ever hydrogen powered car. While only 100 of these units were produced,imagine if more of these vehicles were on the road.

The initial model, namely the BMW Hydrogen 7, uses the body of the 760i model. Once you pop the hood, you will notice that the engine is different since it uses gas and hydrogen.

This just means we have not yet totally abandoned our dependence on gas. Given more time and money, the current 4.7 miles per gallon it can travel using water alone could hit double digits in the future.

The biggest challenge to using water as a green energy source as opposed to oil in vehicles is the engine. While there are cars around like the Prius which runs on electricity and gas thanks to fuel cell technology, the hydrogen combustion is less than 10 years old so you could say we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

To prevent the water from evaporating, it has to be stored in a large, 30-gallon, bi-layered and highly insulated tank so it does not evaporate into compressed gas. Another safety mechanism is the valves which are designed to open should the pressure within the tank exceed 5 bars.

With the success of the BMW H7, the company came out with a new car that is also partly powered by water known as the H2R. While we cannot yet put our garden hose into the fuselage to fill it up, this vehicle uses liquid nitrogen as a fuel.

Tests on this vehicle have shown it can achieve 285hp and reach a top cruising speed of 185.5 miles per hour. It can also accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 6 seconds.

But why use water? It is because hydrogen combustion is clean so it does not emit harmful gases into the atmosphere unlike cars that run on petrol or diesel that emit carbon monoxide. Studies have shown that it also weighs less than hydrocarbon-based fuels and burns faster than conventional gasoline.

So when can you expect to buy a car that uses water as a green energy source? Hopefully in the next 10 to 20 years. It is really up to the automakers because all we can do is wait until a better, less expensive car hits the dealership.

Right now, the best option we have are electric cars. Since its introduction in 1999more people are using it because they don’t want to spend anymore for gasoline that could climb right back up to the high numbuers on the pumps.

If water as a green energy source can be used to power a car, why don’t we do the same for solar power which has been around much longer?

Cats Are Smart!

If the right definition for the term “Intelligence” would be “the ability to acquire and remember information and the capability to use them while solving different problems”, then the cat is definitely the most intelligent animal from all those surrounding us.

Try to put an adult cat in a room in which she has never been before and see how she is inspecting every corner of that room. This detailed search gives her valuable information about the environment, information that can even save her life in some cases. Actually, the curiosity specific to cats never harmed them. On the contrary it gave them the reputation of having nine lives!

We all know that the ability cats have to inspect surroundings is legendary, but, at the same time, it has been proven that this ability is superior to that of any other domestic animal.

The intellectual capacity of the cat is demonstrated by her ability of using information she already has to pass safely through certain situations. Cats are capable of forming “learning methods”, a characteristic that was supposed to belong only to primates.

Cats learn through observation, imitation, trying and of course, mistakes, just like people. The stories with cats being able to open draws or cupboards are many, but there also are cats that can turn on the lights or use the toilet, and this is possible only by carefully observing the ones that know how to do these things, their owners.

Considering the fact that the cat is the most intelligent domestic animal, it is very important that the owner knows very clearly the limits of her cognitive processes, because conferring the pet human motives can cause damage and behavioral problems.

For example, a cat cannot reflect upon the past or think in perspective, so punishing her for something she has done only minutes earlier is useless, because the cat is not capable of connecting the punishment with her actions. By the same token, cats can’t claim revenge for a past punishment.

In conclusion, don’t underestimate the intelligence of your cat! Try and know your pet better and act in such a manner that living together can be a beneficial experience for both of you.

Mother's Day and Morrell Mushrooms

Why think about Mother's Day now? Because I like to go hunting for mushrooms, and that time of year is good for Morrells. They aren't too hard to find. They're very tasty sauteed with a bit of butter. Or add onions and put them over your grilled meat.
You say "What grilled meat?"
It's Mother's Day...Spring...Family...break out the grill...fun. Even if it's just ground beef for hamburger patties.
The hunting makes for some decent family fun, and the rewards will be on everyone's plate. Can't ask for more than that.
But the reason to start thinking about it now is so it does become a family outing. Make sure ahead of time that it's on everyone's calendars, so there's no hurt feelings.
I'll be going to my oldest daughter's place. They live out in the country, close to water, among some hills. lots of spots to hunt. And the kids are old enough to tramp the hills with us.

It seems there's always something to keep me from coming here to post. Guess I need to work on that...so, please, bear with me.
