One of the best guitar book I have ever read. I've been playing since 2003 and I again got the same feeling as I had when read my first guitar book. Great explanation of mechanics, exercises are helpful. Actually, it did improve my sweep!

Chris Brooks is a very good instructor, Iâ€™ve learned a lot from his YouTube videos and this book is further proof of his ability to teach technique in an accessible and thourough way. The exercises build your technique gradually as the complexity increases. The sound files are excellent and help with timing. I really enjoy going over this material and plan on revisiting it as needed once I complete it. Thanks Chris!

I will probably never be a Shawn Lane level 6-string sweep picker, but with the help of this book, I'm much better than I was previously when it comes to 3-4 string patterns. This book is a great look into the physical mechanics of sweep picking and how to best apply and develop it in a musical manner.It starts simple and progresses into more complex examples while teaching you how to practice the given drills to be able to tackle the more complex examples. I also enjoyed the 90-day sweep picking practice program. I wish more guitar books provided a workout-style program.

This book shows you all you need to know about sweeping I think. I like that it had a few unique sweeping ideas that I haven't came across before (owning lots of books), which is always a surprise when that happens. Worth the money!

Perhaps it is just this that makes the book so good, the slow release of the spiritual nourishment, the savoring of joy and the increased longing for the promise of the great house of God.

This is what happens when you tell your publisher you're going to write a biography of notorious recluse Bill Watterson, including an interview with the famous artist and author, but you never actually get an interview with Watterson. There is nothing new here; some awkward and unnecessary interviews with people who knew Waterson in the distant past or maybe know someone who went to college with him or something like that. This narrative would have been far better suited as a long-form piece for a magazine or website; as a book, it's mostly filler.

There are problems with Nevin Martell's book, Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and His Revolutionary Comic Strip. While the title encourages the reader to think he or she will be reading the story of how Calvin and Hobbes came to be, what we get instead is one man's personal odyssey to score an interview with the elusive creator of the strip, Bill Watterson. It's true that we DO get to read the results of Martell's research (which include lots of tidbits regarding the aforementioned story), and it's often interesting. However, the book suffers from the plethora of personal asides about his wife, prior writing projects, and rock star interviews Martell had done.Another problem rises due to the fact that Bill Watterson owns "Calvin and Hobbes" lock, stock and barrel. As a result, there are no comics printed in the book. Instead, Martell resorts to taking page upon page to describe individual strips, from first panel to last. While I acknowledge that this wasn't the author's fault, it adds a level of tedium to some sections of the book.And yet another issue with the book comes in the writing itself. Martell primarily writes for magazines, and that's how this book reads: as a series of magazine articles on the same subject, rather than as a coherent whole. He repeats quotes from earlier parts of the book, summarizes earlier chapters in later ones, and so on. This would be fine if we were reading the book one chapter at a time over several weeks or months, but it doesn't work in book form. Also, his description is sometimes clumsy: "Everything was drenched in pure white, as if God had forgotten to shake the Earth as he would a snow globe." That's a long way to go for a simple image. In addition, Martell sometimes makes errors when discussing the comics themselves. When talking about Calvin's use of the cardboard box (one of the great conventions of the strip), he states that the Atomic Cerebral Enhance-O-Tron is one of the box's many uses. Well, the ACE was a colander that Calvin put on his head. A small error to be sure, but one that a fan will easily catch. Several more are scattered through the book.However, the book is worth reading. His interviews with Watterson associates are illuminating, and his chapter on how Calvin and Hobbes influenced other comic artists is a must. He rounds up a who's who of current and former comic artists and syndicate bigwigs for these chapters. No one can fault the man's legwork.Overall, I'm not sorry I read it. It was obviously a labor of love for Martell, and that comes through on every page. The problem is, that often comes through too strongly. It's interesting, but not essential to ones' appreciation for, or understanding of, the wonder that was Calvin and Hobbes. 3.5 stars.

You are warned that this book is not a traditional biography. Certainly there are a lot of biographical details about Bill Watterson, but a goodly portion of the book is the author's journey to obtain them. Generally, I enjoyed this book, but if I were his editor, I would have asked him to make some cuts. My advice is to take it with a grain of salt and skip around if you feel you need to.

This book did so much more for me than entertain me with stories of Watterson and Calvin & Hobbes. It made me inspect myself in some ways and has inspired me in others. What a good book and about such a thought provoking subject. Great job Nevin.

In the film industry there's a well known curse on the filming of Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. Cinematic giants such as Orson Welles and Terry Gilliam have attempted to capture this legend on cellulose. Though various musical, theatrical and made-for-television productions have appeared, none have yet succeeded in the realm of major motion pictures. Gilliam even released a documentary about his misery called "Lost in La Mancha" (he's apparently exhumed the "Man Who Killed Don Quixote" project, set for 2011 release). Nevin Martell's short book "Looking for Calvin and Hobbes" provides a biographical equivalent to the motion picture Man From La Mancha (though in this case the "curse" orginates from the subject). The book could probably carry the title "Lost in Chagrin Falls." Unfortunately, despite the book's actual title, Calvin, Hobbes and their elusive creator, Ohioan Bill Watterson, still remain at large. In fact, this three-parts authorial memoir, one-part biography may even add to the Watterson mystique. The obstinately elusive cartoonist dodges the author at every step. But this just validates the law of induction, for he has turned down just about every interview ever sent his way. Given the glut of evidence concerning Watterson's attitude towards publicity, this project was Quixotic from its very conception.Drooling, blathering fans of "Calvin and Hobbes" probably know everything relevant contained in this book. Nonetheless, those who love the strip but know next to nothing about its creation or its creator will learn quite a bit. Unfortunately, even readers in that demographic will have to wade through pages of memoir that may or may not prove interesting. And this book is more of a memoir than a biography, which the main title states pretty clearly, though the subtitle belies with the words "the unconventional story of Bill Watterson." In the sometimes meandering,largely first person narrative, only fragments of Watterson's story appear. A few of Watterson's interviews and essays get quoted nearly in entirety. These quoted passages stick out neon-like as highlights. The surrounding intrusive narrative doesn't really add much to them. Along the way, readers learn far more personal information about the author than about Watterson. Though some anecdotes, such as Watterson's famous quote "why would I want to talk to Steven Spielberg?" and his berating speech at the 1989 Festival of Cartoon Art prove rewarding even if some experience them as reruns. The author does seek out numerous people who knew or worked with Watterson. He demonstrates admirable persistence here. Unfortunately, these episodes typically relate no more than good memories or reminiscences from many people who no longer know the cartoonist. Raving fans may soak up every word, though they may not learn much new. Others may find them uninspiring along with the author's ruminations about his comic collections and memories. Most unfortunate is what the author refers to as "the finale." Yes, a member of the Watterson family does finally come forward, but the encounter, rare as it is, reveals as much as the other encounters. The family respects the cartoonist's privacy. And the cartoonist himself seems extremely uninterested in further talk about "Calvin and Hobbes." Further, he seems to subscribe to the Sartrean notion of genius, namely, that genius resides in creative works rather than in the people that create them.Though Martell does not find Calvin, Hobbes, or Watterson, "Looking for Calvin and Hobbes" nonetheless provides a good overview for the uninitiated. Those interested in Watterson's pre-"Calvin and Hobbes" work will find adequate information here, but unfortunately only in narrative form. The book sadly contains no pictures. Doubtless anyone who reads this book will learn something from it, though the sections that read more like memoir could have withstood extensive reduction. One thing remains certain, this is no "Schulz and Peanuts," the massive 2007 Charles Schulz biography that Watterson actually reviewed for The Wall Street Journal. This reads more like a memoir of an attempt to write a book as in-depth as David Michaelis' magnum opus. But to be fair, Schulz frolicked in the limelight relative to Watterson's hermetically sealed public attitude. In the end, Martell asks the question many fans have likely asked: will Bill Watterson appear again? Will he change his vow of silence towards his cartoon masterpiece? Though he supposedly now paints (though some in the book say he's not too satisfied with the results yet) many forsee the artist's potential "second coming" in this medium. Maybe. Maybe not. If he does come out again and speak openly, this book will instantly become obsolete except as a documentary of the thick shell the cartoonist maintained in "retirement." And this begs one big, nagging question that undergirds the book. Obviously Watterson doesn't want attention. This book hammers that point in like a suspension bridge rivet. Obviously the time isn't ripe for a resurgence. So why, given the evidence available, even prior to this book's publication, was this project undertaken? Skipping the obvious answer, Martell and the publishers sort of got what they deserved. If anything, this book should stand as a warning to those who want to seek out Watterson. He will only appear when he's ready and he will appear on his terms. And if he doesn't, then his amazing strip remains. And isn't that enough? Those who voraciously covet a Hobbes doll may protest. But Watterson doesn't owe us anything. He's living his life the way he wants and maybe we should just leave him alone until he's good and ready.

This is a marvelous book about the birds of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are many interesting tidbits that help you go to places where you can have the opportunity to see certain birds.

This book wasn't what I expected. It's more for a serious birder since it goes into how they build a nest and where in the woods they are likely to be seen. There are very few pictures and no color pictures at all. Mostly drawings. I am looking for more of a backyard bird book to recognise the birds that visit my feeders and the trees in my yard and surrounding area. I would send back for a refund but it would cost almost as much as the book costs so I will end up donating it to the local used book store

I found this book to be for the birds. Extremely wordy and only a handful of black and white prints of birds. The format does not allow for quick and easy access to identifying bird species at a glance. It does not serve my need if I have to search through lengthy text to get information about a species that I can't identify until I see a color photo.I'm sure the author spend much time in gathering information for this book such as which birds are found in what areas... however, unless you are an experienced bird watcher or ornithologist, this book may be difficult to follow without prior bird knowledge.

This book is an all-around treasure, for the beginning birder or the experienced ornitholigist, living in or near the Blue Ridge, planning to visit the Appalachian region, or even simply interested in this world-class region. The first fifty pages constitute an introduction to the Appalachian province and birding in general. The rest of the book profiles the birds of over 300 locations, where to go to see them, and how to get there. The book contains over two dozen maps, and even information about birding spots with handicapped access; an annotated checklist of birds; and a guide to contacts and resources for particular areas. It also features the drawings of H. Douglas Pratt. Part travel guide, part natural history, part handbook, this book is above all a joy.(This review originally appeared November 29, 2000)

Sentenced to Science, written by Allen Hornblum tells the first hand account of Butch Anthony's experience at Holmesburg as a human "guinea pig " in the 1960's. Despite decades of unethical prisoner experimentation after World War II, Sentenced to Science is probably the only book written from a test subject's perspective. A story captured in Sentenced to Science that would have otherwise been lost in history due to the aging of the subjects from this tragic research era on vulnerable populations. Hornblum, through the narrative of Butch, gives a perspective of the incarcerated human research volunteer. As Butch describes prison life, his reasoning for volunteering as a subject becomes obvious. Butch believed that he was volunteering for safe and easy experiments and would make a quick and lucrative income as a human guinea pig. As he quickly found out, the inducement of money was not worth the pain and suffering of the trials. Butch describes an array of experiments that he participated. One trial he was told was an innocuous bubble bath test. Despite being as Butch describes "a functional illiterate", he signed a "consent" and volunteered for the test that would pay him thirty-seven dollars for a few weeks of trials. Though the test sounded safe and easy, he found out within minutes the horrible side effects he had to endure. Upon being sent back to his cell, he was nauseous, had a bitter taste and passed out before he made it to his cellblock. The next day, he noted, "Large blisters the size of nickels and filled with pus had formed where the patches had been." Though being in pain, Butch continued the test for as long as possible for the lure of thirty-seven dollars. Sentenced to Science is a lesson in medical ethics, social and criminal justice and behavior. Mr. Anthony describes the pressures of conforming to a prison system that involves sexual abuse, gangs, drugs and violence. In the final chapters, Butch reflects on the path that he chose in order to transform his life for the better. As a grad student in health care ethics, I recommend this book as a must read. Especially in light of renewed interests from researchers to conduct trials in prisons in 2007.

This book is great. Don't think that it's not. It tells of the hardships that the Black community of America goes through and what they've had to go through. It tells of the unfairness of the prison system and how horrible those places really are. Just reading about the raping and the Nation of Islam bullies are enough to get your skin crawling. But I wanted to read a book about the horrors of the science aspect.Although the author does tell the story of this man's horror with the "U of P" it's minimal at best. The story focuses more on his challenges to overcome drugs and to stop hurting his family.Like I said, a great and worthy read. It's just not about the science as you would think it might be.

To read what kinds of test prisoners went thru for a few dollars is hard to believe. Then the after care they got when something went wrong.

This irritating little tome is an irrelevant echo of Hornblum's previously written Acres of Skin. Eddie Anthony's simple-minded escapades provide neither insight into the issue of prisoner experimentation nor entertainment. This book could more aptly have been titled Acres of Tedium.

'Doing' systems analysis is the hard part so I selected this book to help me apply systems analysis in framing my PhD topic. Great book.

The book should be called "Things related to BA". The first two chapters are useful where are explained the phases of SA. The last chapter is also useful and is related to some advices when doing so. The rest of the book not worth, in one page is talking about Brainstorming and the next of Compound Interest. The book doesn't have any basis approach to achieve the analysis in a structured way.

I experienced Prof Scherer as a "student" in the University of Virginia Accelerated Masters Program in Systems Engineering over a decade ago. I came into the course having operated through almost every engineering level from junior to large program chief engineer, test engineer, requirements engineer, etc. one of my discoveries in this course was his seminal version of this text addressing applied systems thinking and it analytical underpinnings. While a specialized engineer or project manager will not likely use this material directly, its understanding provides the basis for applying and decomposing the "big picture" into its intermediate components which may include but not be limited to design fit/form/function, available trade space and balance considerations, cost effectiveness, technogy maturity levels, policy and politics influences and influencers. Once these factors are revealed and traceable top to bottom, system analysis and engineering methods and tools can be applied intelligently. This book provides a tailorable framework for multidisciplinary teams to apply systems thinking in almost any situation military, engineering, management, political, and policy.

This textbook is a manual that fills the gap between the approaches to problem solving offered by different individual mathematical/tabulation/graphic analyses and academic theories. It provides summaries of a variety of key modelling methods employed by systems engineers while avoiding the "cookbook" processes promoted by various institutions. Although I first became acquainted with the book as a student, I use it as a valuable resource in my work as an engineer/analyst/manager who is often called upon to sort out a problem or opportunity, explain relevant aspects of the situation to stakeholders and make succinct recommendations.The authorâ€™s personal note on the start of his professional journey was a tremendous surprise and introduced me to the world of analysts. The importance of context and axiological factors is well-presented. The explanations provided on the need to separate the truth from the spurious and techniques to develop information and answers from the abyss of ambiguity helped me make the transition from being a good math student to having a much deeper understanding of systems thinking.

"How to do System Analysis" distills a lifetime of experience in addressing large scale complex systems problems into a common sense approach that focuses as much on systemic thinking as on analytical tools. This book views systems analysis as a combination of operations research (with its analytical tools and methodologies) and policy analysis (with its ambiguities, perspectives, and competing values). While acknowledging the importance of solid analytical skills, Gibson, Scherer, and Gibson emphasize the importance of understanding context, identifying stakeholders, specifying the problem, establishing objectives, establishing criteria, developing indices of performance, formulating and evaluating alternatives, and iterating progressively toward a solution that acknowledges the competing interests and trade-offs inherent in any system of moderate size and complexity. Unlike many engineering text, this book looks at analysis in the context of the problem - encouraging the analysts to "embrace error" early in the process, expending time and effort to the extent necessary to rule out dominated alternatives so that more serious trade studies and precise analysis is limited to more promising alternatives.The chapter on goal development is particularly good in its recognition of the importance of the "axiological component" - the underlying values that define what is important to the client or customer. The authors walk the reader through a seven step process of goal development that includes describing the current situation (the "descriptive scenario"), defining the desired situation (the "normative scenario"), and developing an objectives tree with indices of performance that reflect client or customer values.The book is loaded with realistic examples and case studies that can be used to provoke discussion and convey concepts. Many of the examples are drawn directly from the experience of the authors; others are drawn from current events involving difficult or controversial public policy decisions. This book is a great companion text for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course in systems analysis as well as an excellent reference book for practicing systems engineers and analysts.

Not to many people know the plight of homeless people. The story was an education into this dark side of the American Way. The characters were described to a tee as they sprang to life. What I didnâ€™t like is that it ended to abruptly. Two more chapters would have given the story a fitting end.

Michael Brock rethinks his life at Drake & Sweeny after a homeless man follows him up the elevator and follows him as he enters the offices. He calls himself Mister and hold several lawyers hostage in a conference room holding a grudge against the firm. After several hours, he orders food from a homeless shelter because everyone is hungry, after the food is delivered and the door is opened, a cop with a scope kills "Mister" and the blood splatters on Michael. The others in the room run for it, thinking that Michael has been hit, too. After he reads the Post (D.C.) he discovers his name and that he was homeless, and also that Mordecai Green, a lawyer and director of the 14th Street Legal Clinic. He drove to the clinic and talked with Mordecai thinking that Devon Hardy might have AIDs and he was splattered with his blood. They talked awhile and since there was a blizzard coming he was more worried about making sure all the homeless were somewhere safe in a shelter. Later, Michael, steals a file from Braden Chance, a real estate lawyer with the help of his paralegal, Then he is in a horrible car accident, with the file in the car when it was towed away. That's when the story twists and turns, and Michael turns down his huge salary of a hundred, and twenty thousand a year to thirty thousand as a street lawyer for the poor. His wife, Clare, knows she can't afford their exclusive, expensive home, so she divorces him, and the marriage was ending anyway. He is comfortable with his new lifestyle, and keeps the file, plus finds out that Chance has shredded the most important memo that the homeless were evicted from their makeshift apartments without a thirty day notice, and thrown out on the streets. Mordecai and Michael sue the firm and end up with five million plus, however, after returning the file, Michael license is suspended from practicing law for nine months, but the story continues....

Very well written. .... what did I expect, right? The best part is that this book has me looking inward. Thank you!

An eye and heart opening book. Impossible not to feel pain and sadness. Perhaps somewhat politically slanted. But undoubtedly an insight into the real and sad world that, fortunately, so few of us who read these books have any personal experience.

I had just finished, and thoroughly enjoyed Grisham's "The Litigators" and was deciding which of his books would be my next read. I was totally enthralled with "The Street Lawyer." I have to admit that the first-person narration distracted me at first, but once I became engaged with the story, I didn't notice it as much. I very much enjoy Grisham's male characters who are fed up with the corporate system and take courageous steps to break away. I rate this book at the top of my Grisham favorites, only second to the "The Firm." Highly recommended.

The Chicago Tribune review of John Grisham's "The Street Lawyer" called it a "timely tale." But that was in 1998, when the book was published. Since Grisham's plot is driven by the contrasts of professions, salaries, and housing costs to the needs of those caught up in poverty, the dichotomy had far less impact because of dated data. But the theme of soaring corporate profit while some members of society go without food and shelter is always compelling.

This novel had me struggling to stop reading. The more I read the more I realized that this was more about corporate greed and the ills of our society which correlates with that personal and corporate greed. Certainly we take for granted do much of our middle, upper middle and upper social class outlook on life and whats good for us and how this view may not match that of the less educated and fortunate. A storyline which invoked much soul searching and food for thought on what is the truth and doing the right thing really worth to me personally and any institution that I may represent as a finance professional. I found the writing style crisp, pointed and enlightening. A good read to awaken your social conscience

This book is a typical Grisham lawyer story with quite an unusual twist. As usual the central character is a bright attorney. The difference is that this guy goes from riches to rags in monetary terms but his legal dealings with homeless street people give him a sense of satisfaction that money can't buy.

Wow I really loved this debut and very quickly fell in love with Tasia "Taze" Quirk our black girl football playing MC. It's all told from her POV and damn my feelings took a hit. They were allll over the place because Taze is going through some internal turmoil after some truths about herself come to light.Taze by herself is such an amazing character. So well fleshed out. But then we see Taze interacting with others and damn i love a messy, makes mistakes all over the place trying to find themselves characters. This book is very much about identity and family. The ones we grow up with and the ones we form.I loved the relationship between Taze and her bro Tristan. As with her mom and dad, the sibling relationship becomes strained after it's revealed her mom's been lying to her about who her dad really is.That propels allll of Taze's actions after and puts her on the path to trying to find out who she is and while that journey allows her to meet a whole new set of people who eventually become a key part in her life she sorta pushes from the family she's known her entire life and her friends too. I mean she's angry after being lied to so it makes for some heavyyyy emotional scenes i think which were so well executed. I was alll up in my feels so yup.The cast of characters here are so interesting, each in their own right and even as we are introduced to a lot of people they never over shadow Taze. This is her story and journey and the author did a great job of balancing that. And Kaiiiiiii damn i loved that kid. he's second only to Taze. My arsty bi son yessss.Each new character we meet felt so full and like I'd want to know more about their back stories. They were all so multifaceted and interesting. And there were so many powerful and great scenes in here. Like Taze taking a knee during one of her games, the negative reactions she got and two other black kids on the team joining her. Her friendship with her bestie Stacy (Slim), which IMO perfectly showed how sometimes we mess up with the people we love the most and it can be really hard to talk it out and forgive.Oh man. Taze's bro's list about forgiveness was another powerful scene to me. Just...i would love for this book to be required reading for schools. There are sooo many themes explored here in such great ways! I would've loved a book like this to dissect when i was in school for real!I'm gonna need everybody to buy and just shout bout this book. It's really so great!

Tasia is enjoying her life, a cornerback for a great team until one night everything in her life falls apart. I was going to spoil the heck out of the book, but I went back to check the synopsis before I just charged ahead and I am glad I did, because they didn't give it away and neither will I. So now my challenge is how to talk about this book without ruining it!Okay first I am not a football fan, but I thought it was super cool that Tasia played football and went about playing in such a way that you could have nothing but respect for it. I am not so sure she handles everything else in a great way, but this is in essence is what this book is about. It is a coming of age, figuring out who you are, forgiveness, and dealing with major changes.Tasia doesn't always handle things right or even close to right, but she does in a way that is true to who she is and for me is what caught my attention and held me the whole time I was reading this book. I loved the characters, her friends and the new friends and Kai. They were so opposite and made for each other it is ridiculous. Trist was amazing as well so level headed and just always making her think about the choices she made and what was going on.To be honest when I started this I didn't think I was going to enjoy it all that much, but it made me a think a lot and I really can't help enjoying books that make me think. Plus I enjoy coming of age and massive self reflections stories especially when they are so compelling.

What's not to love? And, by the way, there are fortunes to be made. The many anecdotes and examples in the book are inspiring. Albert Bates is an engaging writer, and he clearly knows what he's talking about -- he's been an expert on climate change since sometime in the 70s. This book deserves a wide audience. My prediction is that some future millionaires will be thanking the author down the road a bit.

I have read lots of books on climate change, but none have I found as hopeful and inspiring as this one. I thought carbon was the enemy, but authors Bates and Draper show convincingly that we can create a new thriving economy by profitably removing carbon from the atmosphere and sequestering it as biochar in a myriad of commercial products. Natural photosynthesis removes CO2 from the air, fueling all the plants and animals on earth. Pyrolysis (thermal processing without air) turns waste organic matter into biochar, which can prevent that carbon from returning to the atmosphere when plants and animals die and decompose. It's a beautiful circular economy where nothing is wasted. Bravo.

This is a well-researched story of how we already have the tools at hand to turn back the clock on climate change. I am planning to institute biochar use where I live (rural India) and if enough others do the same, there is hope for my favorite planet. Inspiring, readable, educational.

As a praise and worship minister, I love singing about and to my God. It's always a pleasure to bless His name with the fruits of my lips. I did not know that praising and worshipping God was the best thing anyone can do. I knew praise was a weapon of mass destruction to the kingdom of darkness. I knew God inhabits in the praises of His people because He loves praise but I did not know that praise does something magnificent for the one giving praises to a God. I didn't know praise chases away stress, worries, discouragement and all kinds of depressing feelings from us when we praise God! I experienced it first hand during a very difficult time in my life and thought wow, I can't go a day without praising God because that was my only way of truly focusing on Jesus and not being consumed by my problems! No wonder there are so many depressed and disgruntled Christians out there today. Everyone keeps saying pray pray pray and they pray and still remain worried and depressed! Well now I know the key to God's supernatural peace surpassing all understanding! I will Use it at all times!

I love Andrew Wommack's teachings. I learn more from his website teachings and books than I have ever learned in my whole life time of going to church. His teachings are amazing. He has opened up a new way to look at things that I never thought about or heard. I regret that I didn't know about his teachings 20 years ago. It would have made a big difference in my life. I am just now realizing how to have a true relationship with the Lord and learning the right way to pray. I am so blessed, thanks to God.

This is a great book that helps put things into perspective and really opens up your mind to why you need to praise God! If you have enjoyed any of Andrew's teaching you will get a lot out of this book. I was going through some problems recently and when I read in this book how we need to not dwell on our issues but praise the Lord, truthfully I didn't want to! But I did it anyway and what a difference it made! He really ties everything to Scripture and than makes it easy to trust the teaching.

Very good. We know through scripture God says to praise him but we don't realize all the reasons why and how it can affect our lives if we do and if we don't. I can tell you since I started praising God more I have more peace, joy and it's increased my faith. A great gift for family and friends!

Most people feel that "doing" is necessary to please God. This book does a good job of reinforcing that God does not require "doing" to be pleased. This is especially important to me because an illness has left me totally paralyzed at periods in my life. It's obvious that there is no "doing" during these times and is helpful to know that I can still please God.

I haven't completely finished this book yet, but WOW it is wonderful! Praising our God is such an important part of our worship!!

I was brought up in many denominations and carried different baggage from each one, but I have gotten fresh revelation knowledge from reading all of Andrew Wommack Books and am now seeking my Pastor to see where I can be a blessing to my church. Eliezer insists on raising Ben-Zion as the first native speaker of modern Hebrew, which makes for tense family moments and a lonely childhood. But gradually, father and son persuade other children that speaking Hebrew might not be such a bad idea, and that they can have a hand in building the language "word by word." Gudeon (Grandma's Wedding Album) turns Hebrew letters and words into graphic elements that dance across the pages and frame the text, although it's not enough to counter the wooden feel of her vignettes. An amazing story of how the Hebrew language was resurrected, great story for kids!

Just a beautiful book

This book is about famous father-and-son Hebrew language pioneers, Eliezer and Itamar Ben Yehuda.When Eliezer Ben Yehuda arrived in Jerusalem in 1881, the spoken languages of the Jews were Yiddish and Ladino....and other hybrid combos .... plus the local languages where they lived. Hebrew was reserved for prayer and study.Ben Yehuda, lexicographer and journalist, was determined to revive Hebrew as a spoken language. He was so successful that by the end of 1922, the British Mandate authorities recognized Hebrew as the official Jewish Language. This book is the story of that accomplishment -- how Ben Yehuda created the first modern Hebrew-speaking family, and the difficulties this made for his son, Itamar. Which brings us to the book's opening line, "Once there was a child without a friend". When Ben Yehuda and his wife made aliyah, he was determined to create a pure Hebrew-speaking atmosphere in their home. Their son, Itamar, was required to hear, speak and communicate exclusively in Hebrew and was isolated from non-Hebrew speakers. Be prepared for the sad portions of the book -- where seven-year-old Itamar is STILL without a friend. He is finally given a puppy to talk to -- the fact that the puppy died is not mentioned in the story. He is bullied by the local children. Be sure your young readers know that despite the lonelines and isolation of his childhood, Itamar grew up to be a journalist like his dad and changed his name to Itamar Ben Avi -- son of my father.The most recent figures available give the number of Hebrew speakers worldwide as nine million. HIstorian Cecil Roth said it best: â€œBefore Ben-Yehuda... Jews could speak Hebrew; after him they did.â€

Not just a good book for any child (let's say, ages 5 to 10), who will read it and get something out of it, but the sort of topic that should broaden a child's perspective and understanding of our world. That a language might have no native speakers, yet still be remembered; that a language can be revived and supplemented to bring it back to life; that it might take a single-minded dedication to do such a thing; that a child growing up as a sole native-speaker of this language might have great difficulties, and be something of a misfit, until it finally "catches on"... Any child who is learning even a few words of Hebrew should certainly know all this, and here's a great book to accomplish just that.

Based on a true story, Eliezer wants his son, Ben-Zion, to speak only Hebrew. He even covers his ears when animals make noises because they are not part of "the Language of Angels."The first obstacle? Hebrew hadn't been spoken as a main language in over 2000 years. The second obstacle? Ben-Zion is lonely without a way to communicate with other kids. Eliezer begins to teach them Hebrew, too, for his son's sake and also with the hope that they will teach their parents. The third obstacle? There were no Hebrew words to describe modern objects. The children take part in inventing new words for the "milon" ("a place for words" where Eliezer began recording every Hebrew word).This incredible story is told in a way children can understand with concepts they can relate to, including loneliness and bullying. The beautiful art is a perfect match for the text. I was fascinated by the history behind this book and enjoyed learning more in the Afterword. For instance, when Eliezer moved to Jerusalem in 1881, no one spoke Hebrew (except in prayer). Today, more than three million people speak itâ€”an accomplishment that amazes me!

DIY hacks to care for your bodyâ€™s largest organ: the skin! This is an excellent book for several reasons. The first being, skin care products are really expensive and even if youâ€™re a savvy shopper, it still adds up. With a little time and a bit of effort you can make your own products and save you tons of money. Iâ€™m really conscious of ingredients in my food and anything that contacts my body. In this book, you know exactly where each ingredient for each product originated. You can rest easy that youâ€™re not rubbing toxins into your skin or that it has not been animal tested. Further, it is a bit like cooking. Letâ€™s say you follow a recipe for soap and you loved the soap, but it was too lavender-y (just an example). So, the next time you make it you add less lavender. I love being able to customize the ingredients and tailor them to my tastes. With hundreds of recipes for a variety of skin products, youâ€™ll be sure to find more than a few things you love. Treat yourself to better skin! You deserve it!

This little book is about 70 pages and has 365 recipes in it from lotions, to bath bombs, to salt scrubs, to face masks to serums. A very nice variety and lots of good recipes to try. They are not overly complicated to understand and many ingredients can be found easily. Very good little recipe book for skin products.

Excellent! Iâ€™ve always been interested in any sort of DIY skin care related routines, as I and anyone who relies on several store-bought products fully understand how expensive they can add up over time. The only problem I had was finding a reliable and genuine guide, which thankfully author Jamie Stewart has provided with this book.Iâ€™ve only used a few of the recipes so far, mainly the different body butters and recipes to be used in the bath, and I can say that Iâ€™ve already noticed some results â€“ my skin definitely looks healthier and in certain areas. What I admire most about the book though is that many of the ingredients are quite simple and easy to get, in fact I already owned a few of the essential oils that are listed in some of the body butters â€“ and the other ingredients werenâ€™t that expensive, probably even cheaper than brand-name goods.Overall, Iâ€™m happy with what Iâ€™ve seen so far, I just wish that there were some illustrations next to the recipes so I could compare them to my finished products â€“ sometimes I was unsure of whether, for example, a body butter bar looked the way it was supposed to. Other than that, Iâ€™d say itâ€™s more than worth the read.

Some recipes called for a great number of ingredients that are not kept readily on hand. Some recipes you just know won't work. I was not impressed with this book.

Wonderful recipes of all kinds skin types. Easy and some you can make your own essential oil cheaper then of course buying the oil. Can't wait to try some I bookmarked so many it's hard to decide

Typos always distract me and there are a lot of them. Also, not much in terms of substance but there are a lot of ingredients for different options. But it still could use a little more personality since this is a pretty hot subject.

I have always loved Ms. Rivers' writing. There was something different about this novel. The prayers from the characters throughout the chapters became my own. I, too, come from a blemished past. At times, I experience anger from the residue of my past decisions, choices, actions, guilt, regret. As a Christian woman, in my own personal hell that I went through, God revealed things to me that I needed to lay at His feet and learn to forgive myself because He forgave me. Ms. Rivers' has writing down to an art form that you can't walk away from without being changed. For the modern day Believer, Unbeliever, those set free and those still bound, there's Hope. It matters not what you've done. He is reaching for you to come out! If He saved me from my past, He can save you too. This was a refreshing novel that many can relate to through any of the characters. Which one are you?

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time (and I read about two book a week). The characters are well-developed. The storyline is realistic and not predictable. There were things that I hadn't figured out until the end. There is a wide range of characters - each with their own purpose. The Christian aspect of the book is well-balanced and not preachy. It is neither too light nor heavy handed, but it is realistic and powerful. If you haven't read a good book in a long time, this is the one.

This is Mrs. Rivers' best work - a true Masterpiece. I could not put it down. Rivers is a gifted writer that tells storied in such a way as to allow the reader to know each character. The base story is of two people with devastating childhoods finding God's perfect plans for their lives, and how they affected each other in unbelievable ways. Other characters in the story also have interesting things happen as a result of their choices. The story shows how the evil one actively pursues people - especially people made vulnerable by human choices - and The Way to repulse him. Everyone who reads this book will clearly see how to have ultimate, lasting fulfillment and purpose in their life.

WOW another fantastic read from Francine Rivers! I could not put it down. So all my chores got done today (weds) after getting the book Saturday at 8 pm. Well, I did have things I had to do in between, like work. Anyway, this story is fresh, romantic, spiritual, and convicting. What more can you ask for? Another book from Francine Rivers like this, thatâ€™s what! I canâ€™t get enough. I laughed, I cried, I treated people better, I loved Jesus more, I absolutely love filling my head with this kind of past time reading. I also related to some the malfunction within family dynamics that was portrayed. What is the best answer there? Forgive and move on. So did Grace. Love.

Francine Rivers has insight into real-life issues and makes no apology for writing about them in the raw. There is no attempt to frilly them up or become too religious and not face the harsh and often brutal challenges experienced by many in this fallen world. What I love about her novels is that they have substance, show the way of salvation and give hope, while she masterfully and cleverly creates a story line that makes her work one that you donâ€™t want to put down. This was a meaningful read!

I pre ordered the book and it arrived the same day it was released. I could not put this book down! We know how the book ultimately end. The last 200 pages relate to me and so many other people I know. We are fighting our battles and come from different backgrounds. As Christians we all have to learn to trust Christ. It is simple but not easy- as stated in this book. In the reflective moments of the book it helps open your eyes to see where bad things have happened to you there are still blessings in the mess. There is one you can always count on, Christ our Lord!I have already recommended this book to several of my friends and will purchase more to distribute to friends as gifts.

Francine Rivers is my favorite author by far so I hate giving a bad review.A good novel overall but sadly it fell very short (while I absolutely love The Mark of the Lion Series and Redeeming Love!) All four of those books are simply phenomenal with impactful, believable characters and spirituality that draws you closer to Christ. In The Masterpiece, however, something was lacking and I felt disappointed even after finishing the book. It is slightly derivative and dry.The situations created werenâ€™t realistic and were very predictable from the get go. Also, there was too much flipping back to Grace and Romans past ( Roman/Grace aged 7,10,15,20) which typically gave details that were already previously stated in the â€˜present tenseâ€™ chapters right beforehand; so much that the facts became redundant and I honestly started skipping paragraphs because it was a repeat of what sheâ€™d already told us several times already. It became boring and tedious to read. The ink wasted would have been better spent on showing us Grace and Roman falling in love, gettting together, getting married etc. Instead, those details everyone wanted to know, were strewn on the very last pages as an afterthought in the epilogue. Even then SEVERAL questions are left unanswered and made me feel cheated.(Spoiler alert) Is Roman Samuels bio father? That was the most interesting part of the entire book then it never developed any further. And what happened to Nicole who moved in with her boss? And the landscape Roman painted with Grace hidden in the picture? And Aunt Elizabethâ€™s sudden change of heart? Ugh frustration.With the other Rivers books Iâ€™ve read (and re-read several times after) left me in tears and utterly moved. The masterpiece was dull, and not filled with the same spirit and complexity as the other novels. I still love Francine Rivers, but sadly this book wasnâ€™t really worth reading and wonâ€™t be re-read again.

I bought the Kindle edition of this book last month. This book contains speeches or discourses given by Mahatma Gandhi on Bhagavad Gita. He explains Bhagavad Gita in a way that a common man would understand and can relate to. There are some verses in Gita which might be confusing in today's era, but Gandhiji simplifies the meaning of that verse in today's age. This book also gives us an insight to why Gandhiji advocated cleaning latrines or spinning wheel as a method for gaining Independence.I liked this book because of its simple language and explanation. There are other books on Bhagavad Gita which are good too, but sometimes they become too spiritual and the reader might think that the Gita is a book that has no relevance in today's time. But Gandhiji's explanation in this book (and his own life) shows that the Bhagavad Gita is timeless and its teaching is important for everyone even today.I would definitely read this book again in future and recommend this book to everyone.

Gandhiji has written great interpretation about Gita. Very practical.

This is a well written book. It covers all the right topics and is very helpful and useful for anyone who is interested in audio codecs. The book is not full of all the technical details. It doesn't need to be. It explains the basics very very well and the exercises are well thought out.

For a long time in my school life and now as a audio engineer I look forward to this kind of book.MPEG Audio or AC3 audio standard is rather simple, but the syntax and decoding procedures imply considerably complex algorithms have been included there.This book explains related theorys - for example filterbanks in detail, psychoacoustics, entropy coding, etc - concretely and expertly. She(Bosi) was one of the leading members in making MPEG Audio Standards.Strongly recommendable!

This book describes the basic details and the Signal Processing behind the Audio compression. It also describes PQMF and MDCT in continuation which is rare in books. Almost all the standard audio codecs are described with comparisons. I am delighted to read the book. At least my search end with this book on this topic. After getting this book, I need not look into IEEE & AES papers. For Audio engineers working on this domain should read this book to have a complete picture and overview of the technology and the domain.

This is a 'reference' book for anyone interested in how modern perceptual audio coders work. It is very well written, and complete.
