David Steven Bell Defends Himself Against Belligerent Pubescent Female

David Steven Bell, age 51, from Black mountain North Carolina is seen in the video below above defending himself against an aggressive gang of teenage female youths. Mr. Bell was with his wife and daughter at a shopping mall where it was reported that the female youths were causing a disturbance. I don’t know how the confrontation with Mr. Bell began but, the video shows how it ended.

We can learn important lessons about self-defense from this video:

1) Mob Mentality Angry mobs/gangs are dangerous even if they are comprised of female youths. In mobs, individuals are embolden to commit acts they would never do alone. None of those females would dare confront a man of Mr. Bell’s size individually. However, in a group, inhibitions go out the window. Mr. Bell was surrounded and the females were probing for weakness and preparing themselves to seize the opportunity to attack.

Angry mob situations should best be avoided. However, if you are caught in one and you have to defend yourself, try to disable the leader as quickly as possible. As seen in the video, after Mr. Bell knocked down the most aggressive female who was apparently the leader, the rest scattered into the wind.

2) Personal Space Mr. Bell was surrounded. The most aggressive female in the black jacket had stepped into Mr. Bells personal space a couple of times and even shoved him from behind before he retaliated. Personal space is the arms length 360 degree radius around one’s body. An invasion of personal space by an angry individual is very dangerous and should be regarded as an attack even if an actual blow is not thrown. Never let anyone do this to you. Why? Because if an attacker within your personal space decides to strike, you won’t be able react quickly enough to stop it.

3) Strike First Street fights are often won by the first person to launch a decisive blow. So if physical violence is immanent, you be the one to strike first and end the confrontation. If a person wants to argue with you, they can do it from outside of your personal space. Getting into a person’s face is a common street fight tactic to probe for weakness and launch the first blow. Don’t let this happen to you.

In Mr. Bell’s case, the powerful shove he gave the pubescent punk was a fair warning to which she foolishly did not take heed. After she charged and reentered his personal space winding up for a strike, he was perfectly justified in retaliating as he did. Unfortunately Mr. Bell was arrested for punching the female even though he was clearly defending himself.

I have no doubt that a jury of his peers will ultimately find him not guilty. This incident was perfect for the application of a potent dose of pepper spray. If he had it he could have easily ended the confrontation without being subject to a politically motivated arrest.

Many critics claim Mr. Bell’s reaction to the young girl was excessive.” She is only 12 years old”, they say. They scream,” how dare a grown man strike a little girl!” My response is that age does not preclude violence and that girl had violent intentions. There is no shortage of little girls and boys in youth detention centers across the county who have committed all manner of violent crimes, including murder!

Taser Failure: Cop Beaten and Shot With Her Own Gun in Appleton Wisconsin

A Taser ® is a formidable less-than-lethal self-defense weapon. I like it. I like any device that can give someone a strategic self-defense advantage. Tasers ® are highly effective and for that reason have they become standard issue with the police officers of many departments across the county. You can find many videos on social media sites that show a Taser ® being successfully used to apprehend crime suspects. When a Taser ® is used properly under the right conditions, the result is very impressive.

This video shows an experiment conducted by police officers demonstrating the impressive demobilizing power of a Taser ®.

Unfortunately Tasers ® are not 100% effective and occasionally fail to stop an assailant even if used properly. This was the experience of a an Appleton Wisconsin police officer who tried to apprehend a robbery suspect on May 28th, 2016. When the suspect did not submit to arrest, the police officer deployed and fired her Taser ®. The Taser ® failed to immobilize the suspect and he attacked the officer.

The police officer did not have time to use her firearm to defend herself. The suspect managed to take her gun and shoot her. He also shot a bystander and afterwards killed himself with the weapon. The police officer and the bystander were hospitalized and are expected to fully recover from their injuries. This tragic incident highlights the importance of having unarmed self-defense skills. After the Taser ® failed, the police officer was unable to defend herself and prevent the suspect from taking her gun.

I always advocate that one’s mind and body are the ultimate means of self-defense. Of course, weapons are often useful and effective, but everyone who uses them should also be competent in unarmed self-defense in case a weapon fails or is unavailable.

The best way to learn reality based self-defense is from a qualified instructor. However, if that is not possible for some reason, then high quality instructional self-defense videos are a good alternative. Develop A Warrior Mind Set for Self-Defense

Animals have innate self-defense and self preservation instincts. We humans are animals too. Despite our superior intellect we actually have more in common with animals than most people would be comfortable admitting. The innate fight or flight instincts of animals is necessary for survival in the harsh and brutal natural world where only the fittest survive according to the laws of nature. We created civilizations to shield ourselves from the harsh reality of nature.

In our civilizations there are strict laws of conduct to maintain relative peace, harmony and safety. People are generally optimistic, polite, helpful and charitable and believe in the good of their fellow man. Most think that tragedies only happen to “other” people. We are conditioned to trust law enforcement personnel to protect our societies from dangerous individuals who break the rules of conduct. Unfortunately, this has suppressed the natural fight or flight self-defense instincts of most people which makes them vulnerable to human predators.

I have read far to many new stories about crime victims who endangered themselves going to high risk places or interacting with high risk individuals. When interviewed by the police many of these victims said that they felt something was wrong, but ignored their feelings because they did not want to be rude or “politically incorrect”. To make matters worse, they had no knowledge of self-defense nor the ability to protect themselves because they were paralyzed by fear. However, there is a very simple way to reactivate our inherent self-defense instincts.

It involves the visualization of loved ones in endanger. Protection of people near and dear to our hearts, particularly children is a powerful motivating force. I have read stories, and perhaps you have too, of women who were able to unleash superhuman strength to free a child pinned under an automobile or some other heavy object after an accident. Similar behavior has been observed in animals.

Any animal will fight ferociously in defense of its’ young and small normally docile animals have been known to repel predators much larger and stronger than themselves. This animalistic do or die ferocity can be harnessed by humans to quickly develop a warrior mindset for self-defense. When combined with the proper tactical training, practical and effective self-defense ability can be developed in weeks instead of years!

Baltimore Riots Highlight The Need For Self-Defense Training

I did not intend to make the horrific Baltimore riots, the topic of my second post on this blog. However, I would feel remiss if I did not address them since they clearly demonstrate the need for self-defense training and security awareness.

So, the understanding that I have gathered from reading media reports of the Baltimore riots is that a man chose to run from police upon seeing them. Although they had no lawful cause to pursue him the police decided to chase him down and upon catching up with him they severely beat him. He ultimately ended up dieing from a spinal injury he sustained while in police custody under very suspicious circumstances.

As if that weren’t bad enough, large throngs of the urban populace decided to use that tragedy as an excuse to riot, pillage, destroy and inflict harm upon innocent bystanders who had noting to do with police action that triggered the mayhem. As I mentioned in the introductory article of this site, American society is disintegrating a rapid pace and the violent riots and other crime will occur with greater frequency.

It saddens me to see how helpless most of the victims were. Without knowledge of how to defend themselves they were easy prey for the rioters whose blood lust was excited by their victims’ weakness. I’m sure most of the the victims never gave self-defense training any serious consideration as they thought they would never need it. But as we can see from the Baltimore riot videos, “trouble” has a way of zeroing in on those who least expect it so it is best to be prepared!

I hope that this blog motivates people to learn self-defense as quickly as possible. The foundation of anyone’s self-defense skill set should be use of the body the primary weapon. It is always with you and it cannot be banned or made illegal! Of course other weapons have their place but any weapon is really just an extension of the body. So one should learn how to use the body for self-defense first and foremost.
