John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM) is Canada’s Flying Museum, and also home to many vintage aircraft and warbirds, and the Hamilton Air Show.

40th Anniversary
2012 marks the 40th year of heritage flying in Hamilton by CWHM. Celebrating 40 years, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is hoping to make the 2012 Hamilton Air Show the best ever, and a very special aviation event for everyone.

Largest Gathering of Vintage Aircraft
The 2012 Hamilton AirShow is expected to be the largest gathering of vintage aircraft in Canada EVER! This special airshow commemorating the 40th year anniversary of CWHM will be one of the largest gatherings of vintage aircraft in North America, so you do NOT want to miss the Hamilton Air Show.

Avro Lancaster Mk. X
One of the vintage aircraft you will certainly recognize is the Avro Lancaster Mk. X. The Lancaster is the most famous British designed allied bomber of World War II.

Only Two Flying in the World
The Avro Lancaster is an exceptionally rare aircraft operated by CWHM, as it’s one of only two Lancasters still flying in the world today!

Very Heavy Bomber
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancaster was the only heavy bomber operated by the RAF that was capable of carrying the 12,000 pound Tallboy bomb and the 22,000 pound Grand Slam bomb.

The Avro Lancaster demonstrates impressive flying characteristics and it earned it’s fame with daring and precise flying missions and raids. The Lancaster was responsible for sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz in November 1944.

B-29 “FiFi”
The Boeing B-29 Superfortress “FiFi” promises to be a major star at the Hamilton Air Show.

FiFi is the only B-29 Superfortress still flying in the world today.

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the first very heavy bomber built for the United States Army Air Forces. And, the B-29 is well known around the globe for two world changing missions.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki
It was the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that was used for the 1945 atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, leading to the end of World War II.

Hamilton Air Show
Last year, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum hosted the 2011 Hamilton Air Show in preparation for this year’s special and highly anticipated 40th anniversary celebration of CWHM. Vintage war-birds will be featured at the 2012 airshow, but there will also be stunning performances by some of the most advanced and newest jet aircraft.

CF-18 Hornet
The CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Team will feature one of the loudest and fastest aircraft at the Hamilton Air Show this year. This Canadian version of the popular F-18 Hornet is recognized by the painted canopy on the bottom side of the jet, and the large spot-light located on the port side of the fuselage.

CF-18 Hornet Video Tour
Watch the CF-18 Hornet Video for an exciting preview of this high energy performance.

CF-18 Paint Scheme
The 2012 CF-18 Hornet Demo Team is proud to feature a custom paint scheme on the aircraft. The tail and dorsal art highlights 13 distinctive snowflakes to represent Canada’s provinces and territories. The 13 snowflakes also represent the 13 wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) located across the country.

Aero Vodochody L-29
The Czechoslovakian built Aero Vodochody L-29 Delfin Jet was the primary Russian jet trainer. This high performance L-29 Jet owned by Martin Mattes of Bandit Airshows will be on static display with many other static aircraft at the Hamilton Air Show.

Martin Mattes
FYI, Martin is a huge fan of Russian aircraft, and when he isn’t flying his L-29 Delfin Jet, he spends time in his Soviet Yak-52 that you may have seen in the popular Resident Evil Afterlife movie!

2012 Hamilton Air Show

Curtiss-Wright SB2C Helldiver
The last flying Curtiss-Wright SB2C Helldiver in the world will be at the 2012 Hamilton Air Show!

Among the Vintage Aircraft at the airshow, several are the last flying examples of famous aircraft from aviation history. This show provides a unique and rare opportunity to see some of these few remaining historical aircraft.

The Curtiss-Wright SB2C Helldiver is recognized by its folding wings, that made this Navy bomber perfectly suited for Carrier based operations.

Big-Tailed Beast
Affectionately known as the Big-Tailed Beast, or simply The Beast, the SB2C Helldiver was a dive-bomber with two seats including the rear facing tail-gunner. Watching the SB2C Helldiver in action, is truly a rare opportunity that you do not want to miss.

Ditching a fixed wing aircraft or a helicopter in water may seem like a remote possibility. Pilots and passengers certainly do not want to ditch in water, and most people just don’t want to think about the possibility of a ditching. But, survival of an aircraft ditching may depend upon how well prepared and properly trained you are.

Would you be prepared in the event of a water based aircraft incident?

Aviation Egress Systems
Aviation Egress Systems (AES) of Victoria, British Columbia, provides Pilot and Passenger Egress Training. This training could save your life someday! Aviation reports have stated that as high as 90% of people that end up in the water while flying, drowned needlessly. Research has shown that many ditching victims survived the impact of the water crash, but then succumbed to drowning when they did not exit the aircraft.

S.A.F.E. Course
Aviation Egress Systems (AES) provide the S.A.F.E. course to train pilots, crew and passengers so they will be better prepared in the event of an aircraft ditching. The S.A.F.E. Course provides Pilot and Passenger Egress Training that will give you, your flight crew and your passengers the tools and confidence to have a much higher chance of surviving a water impact crash in an aircraft.

S.A.F.E. is short for:

It’s scary! Imagine being inverted and submerged in an aircraft, moments after a water ditching. Would you panic? What would you do?

S.A.F.E. Training Courses can help you be better prepared for such an unfortunate and potentially deadly incident.

University of Waterloo
AES will be holding a S.A.F.E. one day training course at the University of Waterloo Aquatic Centre on Saturday June 16, 2012.

Participants in the AES S.A.F.E. Training Course will be using Dunker Simulators to simulate being trapped under water in an ditched aircraft.

AES uses very realistic submersible cockpit simulators to help provide hands-on, true to life simulations.

SWET
The SWET dunker chair is a Shallow Water Egress Trainer (SWET) used to demonstrate and emulate being inverted under the water. Students will be belted into the SWET chair, and when they are ready, the SWET chair is flipped over. In a safe, supervised environment, the student experiences the sensation and confusion of being trapped, inverted, and under water. The student practices knocking out windows, and exiting the “aircraft” to safety.

Larger Dunker Simulators
AES also has larger Dunker Simulators to emulate being submerged in larger aircraft such as a Cessna 206. The larger simulator has multiple doors and windows and a corridor that the student must practice moving down to exit the submerged “aircraft”. Students will also be challenged with finding blocked exit doors or blocked windows, to simulate real-world scenarios that might be encountered during a real ditching of an aircraft.

Bryan Webster, of Aviation Egress Systems, is a T.C. Award Winning Instructor.

Bryan is AES Founder, and also the chief instructor of the AES S.A.F.E. Course. A Victoria, B.C. resident and pilot, Bryan Webster, received the 2007 Transport Canada Aviation Safety Award for his exceptional commitment to underwater egress training for pilots and passengers.

Ditching Survivor
Bryan Webster is a Ditching Survivor. Back in 1977, Bryan was a passenger in a Cessna 150 that crashed into the Fraser River. Bryan was instrumental in not only saving his own life, but also the life of the unconscious pilot of the C-150 aircraft.

Bryan understands, first hand, the extreme dangers associated with an Aircraft Ditching. It was a life-threatening situation, and Bryan had to react quickly and correctly to save lives. Bryan can tell you about the cold rush of water, the panic of disorientation, and the extreme difficulty of evacuating a dark, inverted and sinking aircraft. It’s a matter of life and death, and Bryan Webster has the first-hand experience to help properly train you and other pilots for an unexpected ditching.

Aviation Safety
As a ditching survivor, Bryan came up with the idea of Aviation Egress Systems in the interest of aviation safety. Bryan has a genuine passion to assist both passengers and pilots with knowledge to help them escape an underwater incident.

Experienced Pilot
Bryan Webster is an experience pilot with over 11,000 hours of flying time in over 35 aircraft type. Bryan has been flying as a commercial pilot for over 25 years. He is also an author, and he published the book “Ditching Principles” to help other pilots to be better prepared and trained for aircraft water ditching.

Bry the Dunker Guy
Bryan Webster has develoed an inexpensive underwater egress training program to help better prepare pilots, crew, and passengers on how to survive an aircraft ditching. He travels across Canada to help bring his S.A.F.E. Training course to pilots everywhere.

Canadian Aviation Safety
Bryan Webster has made an outstanding impact on Canadian Aviation Safety, through his Egress Training.

Saves Lives
Emergency underwater egress training has proven to dramatically improve survival rates. Proper Egress Training helps save lives, and as a pilot, student pilot, or frequent aircraft passenger, you should immediately enroll in one of AES’ S.A.F.E. Training courses.

Personal Review
As Editor of LearnToFly.ca, I personally reviewed the COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator package this week. I had previously heard a lot of good things about this training software, and I was eager to receive the COMM1 package.

Almost 7 Hours of Comm Training
I began at lesson 1, and as I progressed through the lessons, I really began to appreciate what a great training resource COMM1 really is. It’s very thorough, and COMM1 includes almost seven hours of Communications Training!

COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator is a proven tool for getting you up to date on communicating professionally with ATC, Flight Service, Flight Watch, other aircraft, and other ground personnel. COMM1 includes 6.5 hours of training based on actual real world flying situations and the required dialogue with ATC.

COMM1 Multimedia Headset ATC-2CVM
I used the official COMM1 ATC-2CVM Headset with the COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator software. The multimedia headset has a built-in boom microphone for easy, hands-free talking as you progress through the practice lessons. The headset with boom mic helps you feel like you are actually communicating with ATC as you request clearances and interact with recorded ATC messages. It’s very realistic, effective and fun!

Pilot Seat
The COMM1 ATC-2CVM Headset puts you in the Pilot Seat, anytime, and anywhere. The headset is adjustable, and with the attached microphone you can transmit and receive rich audio as you simulate radio communications with ATC, directly from your computer.

Wearing the headset, distractions are minimized and your comm training experience is greatly enhanced. The COMM1 headset includes a 6-foot-long cord with clip. The headset has a volume control and also a microphone on/off switch.

VFR Radio Communications - Training and Experience
COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator is ideal for student pilots, learning about Pilot Communications for the very first time. But, it’s also great for seasoned pilots, to help them brush-up on proper Pilot Communication etiquette and procedure. COMM1 will help any pilot (student or seasoned) to become more confident and proficient with pilot radio communications.

COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator has easy to use navigation to simplify your pilot radio training.

You may easily play, pause and repeat sound clips anytime. Practice over and over, until you have mastered any lesson. Their is a briefing text with each lesson, and you can follow the narration of the briefing text by reading along in the text panel. Accompanying images and emphasis points are highlighted in the main screen to help you visualize the lesson for better retention.

Training Lessons
COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator has 76 lessons/briefings. These lessons include comprehensive tutorial briefings, and most importantly, 6.5 hours of recorded samples of actual ATC-Pilot simulations or exchanges to prepare pilots for realistic flight scenarios.

Practice Practice Practice
Practice makes perfect, and with COMM1 Radio Simulation, the student pilot can quickly become proficient in radio communications. You can practice rapid-fire radio calls, approaches, departures and clearances over and over, until you are confident and prepared for real world pilot radio communications.

On-screen Avionics Panel
Operate the on-screen COM 1, COM 2, NAV 1, NAV 2, and audio panel. The built-in COMM1 radios tune and respond just like the real thing. Based on the Bendix King KX-165 NAV/COM Transceiver, the simulated Radio Stack is very realistic, and ideal for pilot radio training.

Dial Frequency
The on-screen radio, built in to COMM1 Radio Simulator, works much like a real radio stack. The student pilot dials in the desired frequency into the standby position, and then clicks the Toggle button to move the frequency to the Active position.

The user may select the radio to transmit on, and select a radio to listen on, just like in a real cockpit.

VFR Radio Communications will come natural to you as you practice real world flying scenarios using COMM1 Radio Simulator. You will benefit from lesson briefings, sample recordings, and lesson debriefings. You will be presented with many real world flying scenarios, where you can practice your VFR Radio Communications over and over. You will be challenged as you have to locate the correct frequency, tune the radio, communicate and interact with simulated ATC Controllers.

Talk to ATC
Practice talking to “ATC”, and then listen to their responses and your own recorded exchanges. The student pilot can easily and immediately compare their responses to actual recordings made by the voice of an expert.

Experienced Pilots Teaching You
COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator was put together by a panel of experts including experienced pilots, controllers and aviation specialists. The student pilot, new pilot, and rusty pilot will learn how to handle almost any situation, in any air space. If you can master talking to “Simulated ATC Controllers” on your computer, then you will be confident and prepared when it’s time to talk to a Real Live ATC Controller as you are Piloting an airplane.

COMM1 Radio Simulator
COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator is a great product! I love using it to practice, and refine Pilot Radio Communications. For about the same cost as an hour of flight instruction, you can invest in this helpful training resource. Use it over and over, as you practice your pilot radio communications from your computer.

Save Money!
As a student pilot, you will save money by investing in COMM1 Radio Simulator Software right away. Your Flight Instructor and Aircraft time is expensive, and you will save hours and hours of costly time by practicing at home using lessons developed by experts.

COMM1 VFR Radio Simulator is a must-have for student pilots who want to save time and money!

The PSTAR Exam
The Transport Canada PSTAR Exam is the Pre Solo Test of Air Regulations (PSTAR) that all student pilots must pass before they can make their first Solo flight in an airplane. In fact, student pilots must earn a grade of 90% or higher to pass the test.

Multiple Choice Questions
The Transport Canada PSTAR Exam is made up of 50 multiple choice questions, and the student pilot must be able to answer at least 45 of the questions correctly to score 90% or higher. This may seem daunting at first, but Transport Canada publishes a list of 192 potential exam questions. All questions on your PSTAR Test will be taken from the published pool of potential PSTAR questions.

PSTAR Exam App
This new PSTAR Exam App will help you prepare for the test by challenging you with sample questions taken from the potential exam questions.

14 Categories
The Transport Canada PSTAR Exam questions are divided into fourteen categories. The pool of approximately 200 sample questions are all included in the PSTAR Exam App, and these are categorized using the same T.C. categories.

Select a Category
Using the PSTAR Exam App, the user simply taps on a category to begin answering questions in a particular category from the 14 Transport Canada PSTAR exam question categories. The app allows the user to go through each section separately and answer question by question.

The database includes the exact same questions you will find on the real PSTAR Exam. The 192 Transport Canada questions, from the 14 categories are all included. This app is pre-loaded with all current questions taken from the official Transport Canada Study Guide, TP 11919.

Practice Exams
Take a Practice PSTAR Exam anytime with the app. The Practice Exams are based on a random selection of 50 questions from the Transport Canada database. The PSTAR Exam App automatically grades your answers, and it keeps track of your results. You may take unlimited practice exams, until you are confident you will Ace the Transport Canada PSTAR Exam. When you are consistently scoring 90% or higher, then you are ready for the real exam.

Immediate Results
The PSTAR Exam App gives the user immediate results. The user sees the correct answer immediately after they answer a question. This immediate cognitive feedback helps to reinforce correct answers, and it helps users to identify their mistakes. The user does not have to wait until the end of a practice exam to see if an answer is correct or not. The app is a great tool for learning and it also helps to gauge your preparedness for the actual PSTAR exam.

The 2012 Waterloo Air Show is being held on the weekend of June 2 & 3, 2012. Located at the Region of Waterloo International Airport, the Waterloo Airshow is an amazing event for the entire family.

Amazing Air Show
As editor of LearnToFly.ca, I attend a lot of aviation events and air shows, and the Waterloo Air Show is always one of my favourite air shows in Canada. I loved the 2011 Waterloo Air Show, and 2012 promises to be another fantastic show.

Close to the Flight Line
The spectators are very close to the Flight Line, and you get to see the aircraft taxi to the runway, and also take-off and land. This is a great bonus, providing the crowd with an up-close and personal view of the warbirds, jets, specialty aircraft, homebuilt planes, and vintage airplanes as they perform before the crowds. The close proximity to the flight line makes for a fantastic aviation event, that you do not want to miss!

CF-18 Hornet
The CF18 Demonstration Team is always a great performance at the Waterloo Air Show. Pictured here, you see this spectacular take-off of the CF-18 at the 2011 Waterloo Air Show. Back again for the 2012 air show, the CF-18 Demo Team will be one of the highlights of the show.

The True North Strong and Free
The 2012 CF-18 Demo Team’s theme is: ‘The True North Strong and Free’. This theme was taken from the lyrics of Canada’s National Anthem, ‘O Canada’, and the theme is a great symbol for Canada’s Sovereignty and freedom.

CF-18 Paint Scheme
Each year, the CF-18 Hornet flown by the Demo Team at air shows across Canada, has a custom paint scheme to emphasize the year’s mission theme. This year’s CF-18 paint scheme will display tail and dorsal art featuring 13 distinctive snowflakes. These unique snowflakes represent Canada’s ten provinces and three territories. Webster Competitors will be evaluated and ranked, and the Top 9 Finalists, representing their respective regions across Canada, will be flown to Ottawa in August 2012 for an exciting week of aviation.

Webster Week – More than Just a Competition!
Many pilots have already joined the competition for 2012, but more are encouraged to get involved, and join the competition as soon as possible. Pilots will compete regionally in the Webster Memorial Trophy Competition, and then the nine regional finalists will be invited to “Webster Week” in Ottawa.

On June 16, 2012, the Top Nine Regional Finalists will be announced, and they will be the lucky 9 pilots who will experience Webster Week.
Ottawa, Ontario
Webster Week begins with the nine finalists arriving in Ottawa by the evening of Monday August 13, 2012. The 9 finalists will be flown to Ottawa, courtesy of Air Canada.

In the past, many finalists have had their name announced during their flight to the competition. The Air Canada Captain announces to the flight passengers that a Webster finalists is on board and the captain then provides a brief description of the Webster Trophy Competition.

Arrival in Ottawa
Upon arrival in Ottawa, the nine finalists will be met by Webster Team members or volunteers who will escort the finalists to the hotel. Once settled in, the finalists will meet with the other competitors and Webster representatives for an informal get acquainted evening.

The finalists will be full of excitement and enthusiasm as they begin Webster Week, and they will no doubt feel a little nervous about their participation in the national finals of the Canada wide competition. The Webster Week experience for the finalists will be one of the most memorable experiences of their lives.

Fellow Competitors
As fellow competitors, in the Webster Competition, the nine finalists will begin to bond as close friends as they share experiences together. At first, they may be reserved and perhaps shy around their fellow competitors, but they will become the closest of friends by the time they go home one week later! They also enjoy the opportunity to meet and bond with past Webster finalists who come for the Awards Banquet weekend at the conclusion of the competition.

Airline Pilots Association
The costs associated with the familiarization flights and competition flying are paid by the Airline Pilots Association. A comprehensive briefing will be provided to help prepare the finalists and all involved in the competition.

Tuesday Briefing
The Tuesday briefing at RFC will also be attended by the Civil Aviation Inspectors from Transport Canada who will be conducting the flight tests, Webster judges, RFC personnel and any others involved in the competition. The briefing is very comprehensive and an essential part of the competition. It covers all aspects of the competition as well as expected deportment, events for the week and Awards Banquet.

On Tuesday evening, the nine Webster finalists will be given a behind the scenes tour of the Ottawa International Airport ATC facility courtesy of Nav Canada. This will be a great opportunity for the finalists to see the complex workings of a busy Air Traffic Control centre.

The Competition Begins!
The Competition part of Webster Week begins at 0800 on Wednesday August 15, 2012. The finalists have flight tests with Transport Canada Civil Aviation Inspectors.

Weather plays a big part in the competition. Good weather is needed for the flying part of the competition, so when the weather co-operates, the flying portion takes priority over everything else. If the weather is poor, then the written exams will be administered. Both the flight tests and the written exams are important to determine the winner, but these components of the competition are scheduled around the weather. If the weather co-operates, the flying portion of the competition will be completed by Thursday evening.

Flight Simulators
Flight Simulators such as the Redbird FMX are now being used in the Webster competition. Finalists will be flying exercises in the Flight Simulators as part of the competition. This also helps to alleviate some of the weather concerns.

National Research Council (NRC)
On Wednesday evening, the nine finalists will be given a tour of the National Research Council (NRC) Aviation facilities. This will include a formal meet and greet for all finalists and guests, sponsored by the NRC.

Thursday August 16, the finalists will complete both their flying tests and the written examinations. On Thursday evening all the finalists are treated to an evening on King Air and Citation Flight Simulators, courtesy of Transport Canada.

Weather permitting, the competition flying and exams are all finished on Thursday, and Friday will be a free day for the competitors until mid afternoon. If needed, Friday morning can be used to complete any necessary flight tests. Friday afternoon, the finalists will be transported to Bombardier in Montreal, where once again they will be flying simulators including the CRJ and Global Express models.

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday August 18, 2012. This is the culmination of all the hard work throughout the entire competition, and the Awards Banquet is the highlight of the Webster Week for the finalists.

Canada Aviation and Space Museum
This year, the Webster Awards Banquet will be held in the magical setting of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa, located on Aviation Parkway in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The Awards Banquet is well attended by many highly respected and well known representatives from various sectors of the aviation community in Canada and USA. Webster sponsor, Air Canada is well represented with many senior pilots and staff attending the event. Many past Webster winners have gone on to join Air Canada as they pursue their exciting aviation careers.

The Webster Awards Banquet is a golden opportunity for any finalist aspiring to become a professional pilot to meet and talk with many excellent aviation contacts. Attendees of the event are all enthusiastic about the Webster programme.

And the Winner is…
The 2012 Top Amateur Pilot in Canada will be announced at the Awards Banquet. From the nine regional finalists, the Top Pilot will be selected. The Runner-Up will also be chosen.

All the finalists will be honoured as great Amateur Pilots, and there are many prizes donated by sponsors and supporters of the competition. All the finalists will be rewarded for their outstanding efforts, and nobody goes home disappointed.

Most of all, the finalists will have life-long memories of Webster Week, and they will have fostered new friendships that will last a lifetime.

Students in the DAA Career Pilot Program will now be given the incredible opportunity to build valuable flying experience in real world flying operations. This co-op opportunity will provide students with right-seat (co-pilot) flying experience in addition to the flight training curriculum already incorporated in the Career Pilot Program.

Fall 2012
The DAA Career Pilot Program is scheduled to begin in Fall 2012, and applications are already being accepted. Prospective students should contact Discovery Aviation Academy to learn more about this exciting pilot training program.

Sudbury, Ontario
Discovery Aviation Academy is located in Sudbury, Ontario, at the Greater Sudbury Airport (CYSB). They have a modern, 13,000 square foot facility, constructed in 2010. DAA is part of Discovery Air, a large Canadian Air Operator. DAA has a fleet of single engine and multi-engine aircraft to provide students with a wide selection of training aircraft providing a broad range of flight training options.

Discovery Air Fire Services (DAFS)
Discovery Air, the parent company of Discovery Aviation Academy (DAA), operates Discovery Air Fire Services (DAFS).

DAFS was recently awarded an important contract to provide six Aerial Detection Observers to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).

Fire Detection Pilots – Bird Dog
In Northern Ontario, aerial fire detection is extremely important to monitor and detect forest fires in remote areas that are seldom accessed by the public. Fire Detection Pilots fly Bird Dog missions as they scout for potential forest fires.

Aerial observers provide early detection of forest fires, and the Bird Dog pilots can help provide detailed and accurate forest fire information directly to the MNR Fire Services team.

Forest Fire and Emergency Services
DAFS works directly with the MNR, and DAFS’ Fire Detection Pilots are an important and integral part of the Forest Fire and Emergency Services in Ontario.

Co-Op Opportunity
Discovery Air Fire Services (DAFS) will use their contract with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to provide students from DAA’s Career Pilot Program with this incredible co-op opportunity. Students enrolled in the DAA Career Pilot Program may be eligible to participate in the optional summer co-op placement.

Cessna 337 Skymaster
Co-Op Students will be given the opportunity to fly in the right seat of the Cessna 337 Skymaster. The co-op students will build time in a real world flying experience as they work as Aerial Detection Observers to help spot fires in Northern Ontario. Co-op students will fly Bird Dog missions to help spot fires and to support MNR by providing vital information needed for the timely and accurate dispatch of suppression resources to fire locations.

Exciting Opportunity
Discovery Air Fire Services (DAFS) and Discovery Aviation Academy (DAA) are providing an exciting opportunity for co-op students in their Career Pilot Program. Co-Op students will help detect forest fires in Northern Ontario. As Aerial Detection Observers, they will relay critical fire information to the MNR team to help suppress forest fires in Canada’s beautiful landscape.

This exciting opportunity will enable Career Pilot Program students to feel great about the important work they accomplish as they build valuable real-world flying experience. The Brampton Flight Centre (BFC) has a modern, full motion, flight simulator for advanced flight training. The simulator is very realistic and fun to fly, but more importantly, it’s a great training device for student pilots learning to fly. It’s also great for existing pilots to practice, improve, and upgrade their current piloting skills. BFC’s Flight Simulator is the advanced Redbird FMX Flight Simulator.

Redbird FMX Sim
When you climb inside the Redbird FMX unit, it feels just like a regular cockpit. The Redbird FMX is a full motion simulator, mounted on a gimbal system. The full motion simulator provides realistic motion to simulate the pitch, roll and yaw you might experience in a real aircraft.

The realistic motion of the unit, coupled with the excellent video and audio, generates the sensation and realism of true flying. The Flight Controls and Cockpit Instruments are extremely realistic. After a few minutes, you forget your are even in a flight simulator, and it feels like you are really flying.

Save Money
Your Flight Instructor can guide you through flight exercises and air-work in the Redbird FMX Flight Simulator for much less money than it would cost to accomplish the same training in a real aircraft. Flight Training in a real aircraft is subject to weather delays and flight delays. Don’t wast time sitting on the tarmac, waiting to get in the air. In the flight simulator, you don’t have to worry about weather, ground delays, or waiting for other traffic. In an instant, you can be in the “Practice Area”, ready to begin air exercises immediately, without any costly air time flying from the airport. You may initiate or resume training from any point in a flight exercise, and you may repeat tasks over and over until you are comfortable with your performance. Your Flight Instructor can pause the simulator anytime to provide instruction, feedback or constructive criticism.

BFC Flight Instructor Jon Isaac demonstrates the Redbird FMX Simulator

Jon Isaac, CASO
BFC Flight Instructor, Jon Isaac, takes us for a flight in the Redbird FMX Simulator. Jon is the Company Aviation Safety Officer (CASO) at the Brampton Flight Centre, and he was our demonstration pilot for this video tour of the Redbird Sim.

Piper Seminole Twin Engine Trainer
The Redbird FMX Flight Simulator may be configured for many different cockpit types. At BFC, they have modules to allow the Sim to be configured as a Cessna 172, Garmin G1000 (Glass Cockpit) Cessna 182, and the Piper Seminole Twin Engine Trainer. The day we took our demo flight with Instructor Jon Isaac, the Redbird FMX Sim was already pre-configured for the Piper Seminole Twin.

Brampton Airport Circuit
We flew one simulated circuit from the Brampton Airport (CNC3) in the Piper Seminole Twin. Jon started the simulator with us on Runway 15 at Brampton. Elevation at Brampton (i.e. Ground Level) is 935 Feet Above Sea Level (ASL), and circuit height is 1,700 Feet ASL. (For many airports, the Circuit Height is usually about 1,000 feet above ground level, but at Brampton, the circuit height is closer to 800 feet above ground level due to close proximity to high traffic airspace nearby)

Flight Instructor Jon Isaac demonstrated how the flight simulator may be paused during training to allow the instructor and student to discuss the training exercise mid-flight, and to make configuration changes to enhance flight training. Jon also changed the weather conditions, and put us in the middle of some moderate rain showers to allow us to experience various weather environments at the touch of a button. Jon also explained the incredible benefits of advanced pilot training scenarios such as simulated instrument and engine failures. This allows the pilot to be well prepared for potential in-flight emergencies he or she might encounter in their aviation careers.

During our demo flight in the Redbird Sim, Jon emphasized many of the benefits of Simulator based training, and he explained some of the many features of this Advanced Aviation Training Device.

AATD
The Redbird FMX Flight Sim is a Transport Canada Approved, and FAA Approved, Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD). Both in Canada (Transport Canada), and in the United States (FAA), this AATD may be used for flight training exercises and some of the hours logged in this simulator may qualify for your flight training pilot licence requirements.

Redbird FMX Flight Simulator Cockpit
Inside the cockpit of the Redbird FMX Full Motion Flight Simulator, is BFC Instructor Jon Isaac and LearnToFly.ca Editor, Geoff McKay. The left seat of the sim is the pilot seat, and the Instructor Station is on the right side. From the Instructor Station, the cockpit configuration, flight exercises, environmental conditions, and training simulations can be easily configured.

Pitch, Roll and Yaw
The Redbird FMX Simulator produces excellent Pitch, Roll and Yaw movement to simulate movement sensations experienced during flight. The simulator uses an electric motion platform to provide three dimensional (3D) movement of the cockpit cabinet allowing the simulator to rotate through the three dimensions. An aircraft in flight can rotate around three principle axis being the Vertical axis, Lateral axis, and Longitudinal axis.

Pitch Movement
The front of the device will raise and lower (pitch up and pitch down) through a total of 50 degrees. (+25 through -25 degrees of pitch) As the nose of an aircraft rises and lowers, it is rotating about an axis running from wing to wing known as the Lateral axis.

Roll Movement
The simulator will rotate (bank) left and right to simulate turns. The Redbird FMX provides a realistic Roll Movement of 40 degrees. (+20 through -20 degrees of roll) This roll movement is rotating around the Longitudinal axis.

Yaw Movement
The simulator rotates about the Vertical axis, to simulate Yaw movement. The unit turns both left and right (Heading) through 60 degrees of yaw. (+30 through -30 degrees of yaw).

Motion of the simulator, as it rotates about the three principle axis, provides a very realistic flying experience within the cockpit of the Redbird FMX training device.

Realistic Cockpit Visuals
The Redbird FMX Flight Simulator has very realistic Cockpit visuals. The simulator was configured for the Piper Seminole Twin Engine Trainer, and you can see the standard Six-Pack Instrument Panel in the cockpit. During the demo flight, you can watch the Altimeter, Air Speed Indicator, Heading Indicator and other instruments as pilot Jon Isaacs flies a complete circuit at the Brampton airport.

Jon demonstrates a great landing as he comes across the Runway Numbers with a close eye on the airspeed. The simulator provides 200 degree wrap-around visuals for very realistic flight training.

Flight Training
The Redbird FMX Flight Simulator is great for Flight Training. Student pilots can supplement their actual flying time with simulator time. For IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) Training, the simulator is especially beneficial. In fact, IFR Renewals including the IFR Renewal flight test can often be performed within this simulator.

The Redbird FMX Simulator will also be used for advanced flight training incorporated in the Sheridan/BFC Degree Program. Flight training in the simulator is a great opportunity for pilots and aspiring pilots.

Aspiring Pilots
The new pilot program is ideal for aspiring pilots. Sheridan College and Brampton Flight Centre will work together to provide students with a solid business education and Bachelor’s Degree coupled with extensive flight training. The program is expected to produce highly trained pilots with a deep knowledge base to prepare them to immediately work in the industry.

According to Rob Carney, Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) at BFC, graduates will be well prepared for ”Right Seat” (Co-Pilot) jobs with airlines. This is great news for the aviation industry, as a shortage of pilots is expected to create a significant demand for well trained, knowledgeable pilots in the very near future.

Looming Demand for Pilots
The BFC/Sheridan Program was initiated by Rob Carney (CFI @ BFC) in response to reports of a looming pilot shortage in the Global Aviation Industry. The Airlines are now looking for highly trained pilots with degree accreditation. This new program will help produce qualified pilots for the expanding pilot demand expected over the next two decades.

Pilot Shortage
A recent report by Boeing predicts there will be a tremendous demand for pilots in the very near future. Boeing estimates that in Canada and the United States, there is a looming demand for nearly 100,000 new commercial pilots. Boeing predicts the global demand will exceed 460,000 commercial pilots. According to Chris Pulley, Airline Check Pilot, there will be a doubling of the global airline fleet in the next 18 years. Industry experts anticipate there will be a demand of over 1,000 pilots per month to fly airplanes that have not even been built yet!

Bright Future
The Aviation Industry will be looking for qualified pilots and the hiring shift among commercial airlines will be to hire candidates with degree accreditation. Graduates from the Sheridan/BFC Collaborative Program will be well positioned with their degree foundation and advanced flight training.

“Sheridan’s Bachelor of Applied Business (Global Business Management) Degree, combined with the world-class flight training the Brampton Flight Centre provides will make graduates from the program highly attractive to airlines”, said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO, Sheridan College.

Commercial Pilots are becoming increasingly more Global with their work and careers, and a degree in Global Business Management is a great foundation for graduating pilots.
