Her accent is a northeastian one.

Futebol (foo-tchee-ball) - football
Time (she says like timi <tee-mee>, but in some regions it is said <tee-me>) - team
Equipe - team (in the ideia of "group")
Seleção (sé-le-ção) - the word seleção can be said with "Se" instead of "Sé", it is an especific world to say about a country team
A camisa do time (kã-mee-za) - she says with "cã", but in some regions it is said "ca" <ka-mee-za>
Jogador (<jo> or <jó>) - player
Técnico - coach, this word is spoke the same in all regions
Juiz (ju-ees) - referee, she says árbitro with "ah" sound, but in São Paulo it is said with "ar" sound

Meeting each other

Alê and Valter meet each other in the snack bar of the club.

Watch this episode of a Malhação ID (Working-out ID) at least three times:

1st - Just listen the conversation, to get used with the way brazilian people talk.

2nd - Listen the conversation and try to understand some words, read the subtitle in portuguese and try to follow what they are saying.

3rd/more - Now you will try to understand the conversation, watch the episode reading the subtitle in english and try to absorb some expressions.

Don't get mad if you do not understand everything. At this level you are entering in touch with the language:

Script (o roteiro):

"Refrescos" in the bar means "drinks", another word for "bebidas", but with no alcohol.

Speaker 1: E aí Vítor, tudo bom? - What's up Victor, everything ok?

Bartender: Tudo. - Fine (literally: everything)

Speaker 1: Please. Me vê um suco de laranja com acerola? - A juice of orange juice with acerola for me.

Speaker 1: Sem açúcar, tá? - With no sugar, ok?

Bartender: Tudo. - Sem açúcar.

Speaker 2: Oi - Hi

Speaker 2: Eu já te vi por aqui, não vi? - I have already seen you here, wasn't it?

O nome é meio ridículo mesmo, né? - The name is ridiculous, isn't it? ("meio" means "a little", "half", "more or less")

Speaker 2: Vamos falar a verdade, eu também acho. - Let us talk the truth, I think so

Speaker 1: Obrigado Vítor - Thank you, Victor. (the informal form is: "valeu")

Bartender: De nada - For nothing ("you're welcome")

Speaker 2: E... por quê vocês acabaram colocando este nome então? - And... Why did you ended putting this name, so?

Speaker 1: Bom, não sei - Well, I don't know.

Na verdade quando eu entrei no time já tinha esse nome, sabe? - In truth when I entered in the team it already had this name, you know?

Acho que colocaram esse nome pra... Pa tentar assustar os adversários - I think they put this name to... to try frigtenning the oponents ("pra" is a contraction of "para", "pa" is the word "para" when said to fast by brazilian people)

Sabe? - You know?

Quando chegassem, a gente já chegava morrendo de medo - When comming, the people already was comming scared to death (strangely "a gente" should mean "we" and not the people in this phrase)

Speaker 2: Os caras deviam morrer de rir - The guys should laugh to death.

Speaker 1: Então a gente aproveita e faz um convênio - So we take advantage and make a covenant. ("a gente"-"the people" is a way of saying "us", but they say in the singular form, that is why the verb is singular)

Speaker 2: Não é? - Isn't it? ("não" - no, "é" - is; "né"="não+é")

Speaker 1: Bem melhor - A lot better

Speaker 2: E você estuda onde? - And, Where do you study?

Speaker 1: É... No "Primeira Opção" - Hmm... In the "First Option"

Speaker 2: Ah! Me falaram que este colégio é ótimo - Oh! They told me this college is great

Speaker 1: Não.. É muito legal, sim! - No.. Yeah it's very cool, yes! (when the phrase start with "no" it doesn't mean that is negative, it's a way to maintain the conversation)

Você acredita que agora o professor inventou de a gente ter aula de samba.. - Do you believe that now the teacher invented for us to have samba class?

Speaker 2: Aula de samba?! - Samba class?!

Speaker 1: É, para aprender a sambar. - Yeah, to learn to dance samba ("sambar" is a verb)

Diz que é um absurdo a gente viver no país do samba e não saber sambar - Says it is an absurd we live in the country of samba and do not know how to dance samba

Speaker 2: É, ele tem razão - Yeah.. He has reason (is right)

É um absurdo. Não, se eu estudasse no seu colégio eu ia fazer aula, de certeza - it is an absurd. No (but not negative), if I was studing in your college I would do class, for sure.

E você vai fazer? - And, will you do?

Speaker1: Acho que vou. - I think I will.

Some tips (algumas dicas)

Some expressions of agreement: "Não, ..." - if you say fast the word "no" in the beginning it is an emphasis in what you are saying.

"É" - you can use like "hm..", and to say yes.

"Pois é" - some times it can be a disagreement, if the person say it very long "pois é..." it means that your presence is inconvenient.

"Tem razão" (has reason) - means "you are right"

"Acho que sim" - I think yes (when you are not so sure)

"Eu concordo"/"Eu também acho" - I agree.

Disagreement: "Eu não acho" - I don't think so

"Nem pensar"/"Sem chance" - No chance (strong opposition)

"É um absurdo" - It's an absurd (you can't believe it)

"Nem" - same as "não", means no.

Some expressions you use to extend the conversation like:

Não é? - Isn't it? (you say to make the other people agree or not with you)

Né? - same as "não é?"

Sabe? - You know?

I'm not sure about it, but I think the both guys are gay. I think that because they test the interest of each other in a type of dance. When a man in Brasil meet each other, they usually try to prove that they are straight. The first speaker say it is the principal ideia to discover the reaction of the speaker 2.

Of course if you are in Brasil you can say you want to learn samba, they know that foreign people like it and you will not look like a gay if you say that.

The expression "the book is on the table" means that the person doesn't know english. It is the first lesson in an english book. So it is common a brazilian answer an english question with "the book is on the table" (that means nothing for them). It is a type of joke, just laugh.

Returning to the class. She combines "se" - that means "himself", "herself" and "yourself" with "te" - that means "thee". It is because in the sentence: "vai se entregar para mim" - she wants to say someone, but not necessary you, like saying "will surrender to me" without being clear if is you or other one. But with "que canta ao teu ouvido" she says "teu" - that means "thy", to be clear that it is your ears she wants to sing to.

Teu - "thy" / te - "thee" / ti - "thine" / contigo "with thyself"
Seu - "your, him, her" / se - "yourself, himself, herself" / si - "himself, herself, itself" / consigo "with you/he/she/it". Usually brazilian say "você", but with reflexive they use "contigo" to say "with you".

Other pronouns:
dele - "of him". Example: esta é a bola dele - this is his ball.
dela - "of her"
disto - "of it"
daquilo - "of that"
meu - my, mine. Example: Meu carro - my car. O carro é meu - the car is mine.
este - this (something near me). Example: Este lugar é bom - This is a good place.
esse - that (something both can see). Example: Essa rua é a principal - That street is the main one.
aquele - that (far from both). Example: Aquele cara era engraçado - That guy was funny.
minha (female) - my, mine. Example: Minha moto - my motorcycle.
esta (f) - this. Example: Esta vez será a melhor - This time will be the best. Esta mulher - This woman.
essa (f) - Example: Essas mulheres de hoje - That women from today.
aquela (f) - Example: Aquelas roupas eram bonitas - That clothes were beautiful.
aquilo (it) - that thing. Example: Aquilo é uma placa? - That is a sign? (something far)
nosso - our / nossos - our (plural) / nossa - our (female)
neste - "in this" (em + este). Example: Neste lugar - In this place.
nessa (female) - "in that" (em + essa). Example: Nessa janela - In that window.
nisso (it) - "in it" (em + isso). Example: Vou entrar nisso - I will enter in that thing. Or can mean: "at this moment". Ele foi no parque, nisso encontrou ela. - He went to the park, at this moment, he found her.
naquilo - in that thing.
comigo - with me, myself. Example: Ele veio comigo - He came with me.
Self in portuguese is "si mesmo". When they want to say "himself" for example, they say he, she, it with "mesmo" ("same"), Example: Ele fez para ele mesmo. - He made for himself.

The verbs in portuguese don't need the subject, because the conjugation identifies the subject. Example: "Sou pássaro de fogo" - ~~(I)~~ am fire bird.

Peter: Oh, I understand. The "carioca" accent. You will learn in time. <they use a lot of verbs without subjct like "entendo" without "eu">

Mark: Ok. Let's do the entry in the reception. <"us" (nós) is not in use here, it is an informal speak>

Recepção - reception

Recepcionista: Olá, bom dia. Voceish(vocês) têm resehva(reserva) aqui neshti(neste) hotel?
Receptionist: Hello, good morning. Do you have reservation here in this hotel?

Pedro: Meu nome é Pedro da Silva. Eu liguei ontem a noite, pedindo um quarto para um.
Peter: My name is Peter da Silva. I called yesterday at night, asking ~~for~~ a room for one. <"for" a room: "por" um quarto ("por" is not in use here)>

Recepcionista: Ah, claro. Aqui eshtá(está) sinhoh(senhor) da Silva. Seu quahtu(quarto) é o quinhetush(quinhentos) e dosh(dois).
Receptionist: Oh, for sure. Here it is mr. da Silva. Your room is the 502.

Marcos: Infelizmente, não sei falar inglês e o sotaque dele é difícil de entender. Pode perguntar qual é o meu quarto? Eu fiz uma reserva em nome de Marco Lucca a três dias atrás.
Mark: Unfortunately, I can not (liter.:don't know) speak English and his accent is hard to understand. ~~You~~ may ask what is my room? I made a reservation on behalf (in name) of Marco Lucca three days ago.

Marcos: Que ele disse?
Mark: What he said?

Pedro: Ele falo(falou) que seu quarto é o cento e seis.

Mary Julie: Excuse me, here is the center of information of the hotel? <brazilian phrases are compound in this order "hotel information center" is a wrong form. Use prepositions ("de", "do", "da") and invert the sentences>

Guia turístico: Sim, em que posso ajudar a senhorita?
Tour guide: Yes, how can I help you miss? <literally: in what can I help the miss>

Maria Júlia: Eu preciso de um táxi pro (contraction of para + o) aterro do Flamengo.
Mary Julie: I need a taxi to the Flamengo Park. <literally: embankment>

Guia turístico: Com certeza, é pra(para) já senhorita. Aliás, a senhorita está com algum problema?
Tour guide: Surely, it is for now, miss. Indeed, the miss has a problem? <"algum" can mean "any">

Maria Júlia: Sim, o pior é que tenho. Minha mãe está doente e vim ao Rio só para ver como ela está.
Mary Julie: Yes, the worse is that I have(common expression). My mother is sick and I came to Rio just to see how she is. <"só", "somente" means "only">

Guia turístico: Já estou ligando para a central de táxi.
Tour guide: I'm calling to the central taxi. <"já" means "already", he/she uses "estou" instead of "eu estou">

Juan António: Hello, what is up. What is happening girl? <Juan is talking in spanish, not all brazilias understand spanish>

Luísa: Eu estou com um grande problema. E não sei como resolver.
Louise: I have a big problem (lit.:"I am with"). And I don't know how to solve.

Juan António: Ixe, e qual é este problema chica (this is spanish, in Brazil they say "menina")? Eu vi que aquele homem está com cara de quem está chateado contigo.
Juan António: Woops, and what is this problem "chica"? I saw that man with a face that who is upset with you.

Luísa: Um dos hóspedes disse que sumiu o relógio dele. Eles acham que fui eu, somente porque estou desempregada e isto é desculpa suficiente para me acusarem.
Louise: One of the guests said that his watch disappeared. They think it was me, just because "am" unemployed and this is "excuse enough" (inverted) to acuse me.

Juan António: Ah, não pode ser verdade. Vou falar com o hóspede.
Juan António: Oh, can't be true. I will talk with the guest. <without the "it" and the "I" before the verbs>

Juan António: De fato o relógio dele foi roubado.
Juan António: In fact, his watch have been stolen.

Luísa: Então você também acha que sou uma ladra (male: "ladrão")?
Louise: So you too think that am a thief?

Juan António: Não, eu não acho. Eu soube que tinha um batedor de carteira passando aqui ontem, tentando vender ingressos falsos para um show.
Juan António: No, I don't think so. I knew that there was a pickpocket passing by here yesterday, trying to sell "fake tickets" (inverted) to a show.

Luísa: Ah, sério? Valeu mesmo "castelhano". Nem sei como agradecer.
Louise: Oh, really? Thank you so much "castillano" (who speak a type of spanish). Don't know how to thank.

Juan António: Estamos na mesma luta. Eu também estou procurando um emprego, estou visando um cargo na empresa Técnica.
Juan António: We are in the same fight. I am looking for a job too, I am I am seeking a position in the company Technique.

The animals (os animais)

Sorry to say... but you will not see jaguars ("onças"), and alligators free in Brazil. They are in the zoo ("zoológico"). There are some places like in North (Amazon forest), or Middle-West (Pantanal), or Paraná (Iguazu Falls) that you can see wild animals free, but they are not in the cities.

The Anaconda ("Sucuri") just live in "Amazônia" in big rivers. They can eat an ox ("boi"). I saw one in a trip once (but it wasn't so big :/).
Alligators ("jacarés") live in Pantanal, you can see them in the shores of the rivers. There are no crocodiles in Brazil.
Jaguar ("onça") are almost extinct. Just live deep in the forest, never appears in inhabited regions.
Monkeys ("macacos") appears in cities! Yeah, depending the city you go, you can see one.
Please, do not buy stuffs made with wild animal hides, remember that you can save them, or you can help to extinct them.

Masculino/Feminino (Male/Female)

Words in portuguese can be male or female, but never neutral. The classification is different of german.
Usually female words use the letter "A" in the end, example: "A menina" - the girl. Male words use the letter "O" in the end, example: "O menino" - the boy. Some words doesn't change the end of the word and you find if is female/male by the article. Example: "o estudante" - the student (man). "a estudante" - the student (woman).
To know if an object is male or female, the unique way is to memorize the word with the article.
Some examples:
A janela - the window, is a female object because it uses the article "a"
Uma cadeira - a/one chair, is a female object because it uses the article/number "uma"
O cachorro - the dog, a male object because it uses article "o"
Um gato -a/one cat, male because it uses "um"
O carro - the car (male)

Plural

The plural in portugues is defined by the letter "S" in the end of the word.
When the word ends with "el" (pronounced "éw"), it becomes "éis" in plural. Example: papel (paper) / papéis (papers)
País (country) is singular / países (countries) is plural
ônibus (bus) is singular or plural, it depends on the article. Example: "O ônibus chegou" (The bus arrived) - singular. "Os ônibus chegaram" (The buses arrived) - plural
If the word ends with "em", it becomes "ens" in plural. The sound doesn't change, just add the "s" sound. Example: "bem" (possession/well) - singular / "bens" (possessions) - plural.

The sounds

The alphabet (O alfabeto)

The vowels (as vogais)
A - this vowel has the sound of "a" in "car". Example: "mar" (ocean), similar sound of "car".
E - like in the word "pay". Example: "Hey" - spoken as in english
I - this vowel has the sound of "e" in "these". Example: "Diz" (You say), same pronunciation of the word "these".
O - this vowel has the sound of "o" in "boat". Example: "cor" (collor), similar sound of "coordination"
U - this vowel has the sound of "ou" in "you". Example: "mudo" (mute), the syllable "mu" has similar sound of "smooth"

Variations:
A - always has the same sound, even with graphic accents: á, à, â, a. The exception is the nasalized sound.
ã - similar to the sound of "bird". The sound in brazilian portuguese is more nasalized than other similar sounds. That is the way everybody knows in Brazil who is foreign. The letter "A" will have the sound of "ã" before the letters "M" and "N". Examples: "mãe" - means mom; "mainha" - same pronuciation as the word before, plus "nha" (gna sound, like "ña" in spanish); "banda" (means "band") - it is pronounced bãnda, like all "A" before "n"; "campo" ("field") - kã - po. "Amanhã" ("tomorrow") - A - mã - ñã.

E - the word "baseball" in portuguese is "beisebol" and the pronunciation is the same. In some words the letter "e" doesn't have the sound of "a", but the sound of "é" like in the word "that". Even without the graphic over the letter. In the end of the words usually is pronunciated like the "e" in english. Example: "leite" ("milk"), it is pronounced like "lay" + "chee" (like in "cheese"). In the state of Paraná they always pronounces "e" with the standard sound, example: "leite" "lay" + te (like in "tennis"). Before the letter "m" and "n" will never have the sound of "é" even with the graphic symbol; example: "também" ("too", "also") - tun - bain (like "brain").

I - always with the sound of "e". Example: "Ísis" - like easy - s; "pai" (father) - exactly as "pie"

O - out of the northeast the sound of "o" is the same as "board". Example: "hoje" ("today") - "O - gi". "morder" ("bite") - "Mor - der" (like in "mourn") Some times it will have the sound of "ó" even without the graphic, example: "Morte" ("death") - "mór - chee" (like in mourning). The nasalised sound apears with the graphic "õ" or before the letters "m" and "n"; example: "monte" ("mount") - mõo - te (appears more like "mou" than "mon"); "põe" (you put) - "põ" - "e" (a bit different from "poe", like "poing"), the "e" in that case sounds like the "I Ŋ" of english (like in "ping").

U - always like "oo". "Grude" ("glue", "paste") - "groo - de". "Barulho" ("noise") - "bar-oo-leo"

Consonants (consoantes):

B - like in "bambu" ("bamboo")

C - like in english. "Ca" = ka, "Ce" = "se" (in send), "Ci" = "si" (see), "Co" = ko, "Cu" = "ku". Variation: "Ç" - the "ç" with the letters "a", "o" and "u", has the sound of "S"; example: "maçã" ("apple") - "Ma-sã". The words "maça" ("mace") and "massa" ("mass") have the same pronunciation. Important! The letter "ç" never start a word (we don't use the capital letter "Ç"), it will apear just in the middle of the words. Example: "Caçar" ("hunt") - "ka-sar"

D - similar to english. The unique difference is in the syllabe "di" that is pronounced like "gi". Example: "dia" ("day") - "gi-a" (like in geek)

F - similar sound. In portuguese there aren't words with "PH", just "F". Example: "foto" ("photo"), "telefone" ("telephone"), "física" ("physics"), "farmácia" ("pharmacy")

G - "ga" sounds like in "guy", "ge" and "gi" sounds a bit different of english ("gi" in english sounds like "dgi" for brazilian), don't touch the palate when speaking, and will sound more like "she"; "go" like "goat"; "gu" like "good". Example: "gago" ("stutterer"). The combination "güe" and "güi" just disappeared from brazilian portuguese by a law, in some cases "gue" and "gui" will sound like "ge" (in "get") and "gi" (in "give")

H - without sound. It is not used like in "house". But in some cases change the sound of the other consonant. "LH" - like an "L" followed by a weak "i", similar of "LL" in spanish. "NH" - like "Ñ" in spanish, or "GN" in italian, example "lasanha" ("lasagna"). "CH" - like "SH", "cher" will be like the word ("share"), example: "lanche" ("a break") - "lã - shee". "Hora" ("hour") - "ó-ra"

J - try to follow without touching the tongue in the palate. Example: "Jorge" = "George". Hat nie den Klang der "i" wie in deutsch (Ja).

K - it is not so used. Similar to english. Examples: "Km" ("kilometers") abbreviation for the word "quilômetro". "Kátia" = "Kate".

L - similar sound. In the end of the syllabe has the same sound of "u" ("oo"). Example: "Papel" ("paper") - "Pa - pé u" (not like "L"); "lugar" ("place") - "lu - gar" (in this case the sound is normal); "mel" ("honey") - "mé-oo"

M - called "eme", because in Brazil (different from Portugal) the sound "em" doesn't exist. When the word ends with "m" the sound appears more like "i" ("e" in english). There is no difference between syllabes finished in "M" and "N" in brazilian portuguese. If the syllabe start with "M" the sound is normal. Examples: "meias" ("socks") - "may-Ás"; "bem" ("well", "goodness") - "Bay-ĩ". Just before "b" the letter "m" can sound a little similar to english (like in "thumb").

N - called "ene", because in Brazil (different from Portugal) the sound "en" doesn't exist. Example: "gente" ("people") - "jay-chee". In the middle of the word the letter "m" doesn't end a syllabe, just when followed by a "p" or a "b" (in english we have the word "rainbow" - with "IN" before a "b", these doesn't occur in portuguese). Example: "canto" ("song"/"corner") - "kã-to"/"jambo" ("iamb") - "jum-bo".

P - similar. Example: "português" ("portuguese").

Q - followed by the letter "U", example: "quadro" ("picture") - "kwa-dro". With "que" and "qui" it sounds like "ke" and "kee". Not like in "queen". In this case there was another graphic symbol: "qüe" and "qüi" ("kwe" and "kwee"), but it is now removed by a law. Example "cinqüenta" ("fifty") - now it is write "cinquenta", but the sound still is like "kwen"; "aquilo" ("that over there") - "A-ki-lo", in these case the word hasn't qüi in past.

R - like in american english, in the end of the words ("car"). But when the word start with "R", it sounds like "H" in english ("house"). In "carioca" (Rio accent) they ALWAYS use the sound of "H". Example: "verdade" ("truth") - "Veh-da-ge", in São Paulo it will sound exactly like in american english: "verdade" - "ver-da-ge" (like in the word very). The letter "H" doesn't have sound in the beginning of the words. In the countryside is more usual to listen "R" with the sound like in english by folks, even in some rare cases (some cities of the south) they use the sound of "r" in the beginning of words. Example: "Rua" ("street") - "Hoo-Ah"

S - In the beginning of the word it sounds like "song". In the middle, it sounds like "those". Example: "símbolo" ("symbol") - "see-bo-lo"; "caso" ("case") - "ka-zo"; "mas" ("but") - "mas"

T - When it comes before the letter "i", it will sound like "chi" in "chimney". In northeast they use "ti" just like in the word "tea". Example: "tarde" ("late"/"afternoon") - "tar-de"

V - Like "v" in english, or "w" in deutsch. Example: "voz" ("voice") - "vós" (like in "voice")

W - It can sound like "v", example "watts" ("watts") - "vats"; or like "u" "Wilson" (can be pronounced both "ui" or "vi")

X - Like "sh" in "share". Example: "xícara" ("cup for tea") - "shee-ka-ra". In some cases it will have the sound of "x" english (ks), example: "táxi" ("taxi") - "tá - ksee"; in other will have the sound of "s" like "exceto" ("except") - "ê-settle"

Y - the same sound of brazilian "i" (same as in the word "youth"). Example: "Yara"/"Iara" is a name and both are pronounced equal "ee-ara".

Z - In the end of words can sound like "s" in some case, but usually sounds like "z" in "Zambia". Example: "zumbi" ("zombie") - "zoo - bee"

Ü - Removed from brazilian portuguese. In names is used like in german: "Müeller" - "Mi-ler" (without schwa sound); "Küerten" - "kir-ten"

Lição 1 - Lesson 1

Hi, I am a brazilian and I will teach how to speak just like a brazilian. (Oi, Eu sou um brasileiro e eu irei ensinar como falar exatamente como um brasileiro).

First of all. You need to know that brazilian portuguese is not the same as in Portugal. If you learn the standard portuguese, you will find some difficulties understanding brazilians. But the grammar structures are the same.

Let's start with some words:

Oi sound: oee/mean: Hi kl: oi/bedeutung: Hallo son: oi/signifier: Salut (essayez de dire le "I" comme le "E" dans l'anglais)

Como está? How are you? Wie geht's? Comment allez-vous?

Eu estou bem, e você? I'm fine, and you? Mir geht es gut, und Sie? Je vais bien, et vous?

Eu me chamo João, My name is John, Mein name ist John, Je m'apelle Jean, et vous?

e você? and you? und Sie?

Für deutsch lautsprecher: Brasilianer haben keine formellen oder informellen wörter für "Sie/du". In Süd-Region, die sie verwenden "du"(tu) die ganze zeit, sie in Rio nur "você" (Sie) verwenden.

Before learning the sounds of letters or words, let us look some cultural aspects of Brazil that will help us with the accents.

Brazilians regions are very different each other. All the regions were colonized by Portugal. The official language is portuguese, even where they still speak other european languages.

North: called "Norte" - the combination of indigenous and portuguese people, is the region of the equatorial forests.

Northeast: called "Nordeste" - it is hot in all seasons, mostly colonized by portuguese, with presence of some other ethnical people in few places. Tipically tanned skin. The state of Bahia (in south of the Northeast region) is mostly african descendent.

Midle-West: called "Centro-Oeste" - the tropical forest, with swaps that give the origen for the name "Pantanal" (from pântanos = swamps). There are a lot of indigenous tribes in Centro-Oeste, some people from the south are today colonizing this region. In the cities there are some arabs, but the mostly are portugueses.

Southeast: called "Sudeste" - The biggest cities in Brazil like Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo are here. Mostly colonized by portuguese, the people from Rio (cariocas) have some portuguese accent. In São Paulo we find a lot of commerce. The famous "favelas" (big concentration of poor houses) are here.

South: called "Sul" - It's very rare to snow here, but the climate is cooler, the mostly people are caucasian because this region was colonized by italians, germans, ukrainian and others.

Some accents by states (we will explain the sounds off the words soon):

Bahia: you can perceive the difference between Bahia and the other northeast states because they speak a little slowly. Some words: "Meu rei" - literally: "my king", it means "guy", "man". "Ôxe" - it's like "nossa" (Our Lady = Nossa Senhora) in all Brazil, it means "Oh!" "Mainha" a variation of "mãe" that means "mother". "Painho", var. "pai" (father). "Oxente" - that means approximately "What?", "what a problem". "Tá arretado" - it joins "está" that means "It is", and "arretado" that means "nice", "valued" aprox. It is common in Northeast to say "cabra" to mean "man". "Aperreado" - "troubled". They usually use "pronto" (ready) in the end of an explanation, when they find that the other one understood them. Example: "Não tem uma ruazinha que vira ali?" "Sei." "Pronto, então você entra ali." Translation: "Is there a little street that turns just over there?" "I know." "Ready (OK!), so you "enter"(go) there."
Rio de Janeiro: the main difference from the other brazilians and "cariocas" is the sound of the "S". Just remember, when I will explain the sound of the letters, some regional sounds will be different, like here. The sound of "S" sounds like "SH" in the end of the words, what brazilians call "chiado" (the sound of "x"). "Tá de sacanage" - means "You are kidding me", it comes from "está" (you are), "de" (preposition), "sacanagem" (mess). "E aí, coaé" (E aí, qual é?) - that means "Hey there, what is up?". "Perdeu" - means "you lose", they use in the sense of compelling the surrender (police/thief stuff). "Valeu", means litteraly "worthed", they say in instead of "obrigado" (thank you).
São Paulo: it is common to use "beleza", or "tá beleza" instead of "certo" to say "OK" in the Southeast. "Cara"/"Meu" - the word for "you" is "você", but the "paulistanos" (people from Sao Paulo) usually say "cara" all the time in the sense of guy. Example: "Cara, não tem noção da parada" - transl.: "Man, you have no ideia of the stuff". (2) "Meu, tá ligado no cara, mano?" - transl.: "Hey you, you know the guy, bro?". "E aí, parcero?" - means "Hey mate".
Rio Grande do Sul: in the south they (less in the state of Paraná and some cities of Santa Catarina) they use "tu" (thou) instead of "você" (you). The verbs change with the use of "tu". Example: "Você vai" - "You go"; "Tu vais" - "thou goest". The "gaúchos" (people of the south) have a large number of exclusive words. Some common: "tchê" - to start a conversation, or to say "man". "barbaridade!" - in other regions they usually use "caramba", meaning a surprise expression, the interjection "oxe" will fit better in northeast.
Minas Gerais: "uai" - means "oh!", they often use "uai sô" - this substitutes the word "oras", that means "so what?". They use a lot, with positive meaning like surprised. "Uai, treim bão sô" (Uai, trem bom senhor) - it means: "Oh! What a good thing sir". The word "trem" (train - believe or not!) is used here in the meaning of "thing".

Some differences in the pronunciation by regions: in the northeast they use "é" and "ó" sounds for the letters "e" and "o". Example: "Abestado" - in other regions they will say like "A-bais-tA-due", but in Northeast they will say something like "A-best-A-due", the difference from "E" and "é" is the same as in the sound of "bay" and "bet". Just in case, "abestado" - a northeastern word for "dumb", "fool".
Other example: "demórano" - is the northeastern pronunciation for the word "demorando" (taking too long, delaying). The sound for northeastern people is like "The-More-an-w", the standard pronunciation is like "The-moar-an-thou". Of course all of these is approximately just to get in touch of some regionalisms.
