Apple in-ear buds have a sensitivity of 109 dB.

After some research I found that AKG has the loudest.

The AKG cords suck, the went cheap on the cable, it actually transmits more structure sound to the ear phones like a cup and a string.

They are much louder than the iphone earbuds, I don’t care if they are not perfect, mostly listening for distortion or a drop out, sound , better than missing those items.

I like the open feel of the earbuds, I have tried the ones you push in to your ear canal and I don’t like them because to creates wax issues for me.

In this review I will be looking at Canon’s affordable full frame camera that is geared towards someone wanting to upgrade from perhaps the EOS Rebel line or perhaps their very first camera.

This review is not directly following it’s release, in fact it has been out now for about 6 months and has already dropped in price a few hundred dollars already.

T5i is around $750

60D is around $900

Canon 5D Mark III is around $3,099

Canon 6D is around $1,799 at B&H.

In this review I will be comparing it to the Canon 5D Mark III which is also a full frame camera to see how it stacks up to it’s big brother.

One of the things I disliked when I first started with the T2i was everyone talking about lens sizes, but then saying, “Oh if you have a crop factor it really isn’t 24mm you will have to do some math in your head to figure what it is”, like you are part of some cool kids club.

On one hand this camera wants to play with the big boys without having a tilt out screen for increased weather protection, but on the other hand we have a flash hot shoe which then doesn’t help for weather protection. As I run through all the similar and differences to the 5D3 it is sometimes puzzling what Canon had it mind.

I tested the 6D with the kit lens the Canon 24-105mm wherever I could I only used that lens for both cameras.

6D Video Training

I have finished my 4 hour training course on the Canon 6D and is now available for purchase for immediate download or streaming. I’m am really proud of this course, it took a long time to make and I feel it will really help anyone wanting to shoot video with the Canon 6D.

This is a beginner level course.

Noise

Since I know you guys love the noise tests I will start with that. But to be honest I think we have reached a level that these cameras can pretty much see in the dark and it is not as important as it once was. Where I think Canon needs work is in the dynamic range.

In my latest course I came across some thing interesting when looking at noise with the Canon cameras. I found that most of the noise lives between 20-30 IRE.

Looks like the 5D Mark III is the winner here, and wow High ISO Noise Reduction works great, why would you ever turn it off.

Since I know you might not looking at more real world examples here is a piano recital first at 1600 ISO, then at 6400 focus on the girl in the back.

Dynamic Range or Latitude

With stills in RAW mode I am not seeing any difference at all between the two, for dynamic range.

I’m not sure why one very popular lab says the 6D has a slightly better dynamic range than the 5D3, because I am not seeing it at all in my real world tests.

Also to check the dynamic range I ran through all the picture styles and they all seem to behave exactly as the 5D Mark III does.

Sharpness – The 6D Should be Sharper

I was having a hard time seeing any sharpness difference between the two with the RAW still images, but when I shot an HDR image with both and processed them actually the same, the 6D seemed slightly sharper, perhaps because of the lack of the anti aliasing filter.

Seeing no difference in sharpness for video as well.

6D Training Course on Sale

Before we move on to the other tests, I have finished my Canon 6D Getting Started in Video, which is a beginner level course. If you are on my bonus video newsletter you will receive a discount code for the course in the next day or so.

Moire and Aliasing

In the beginning moire didn’t bother me that much, then I started to really noticing it after about a year, and now it bothers me so much that it detracts from the story telling and it ruins shots for me.

I think if you are trying to step up your level of work you will not want moire in your shots. You can do this by putting in a filter or get the 5D3, or if you are really good you will learn how to not shoot in situations that will cause this, not as easy as you think, this will slow you down if you are a run and gun shooter like me because you will need a very large monitor to check if you are getting moire.

You can buy a anti aliasing filter for the 6D for about $350

Auto Focus

Scott Kelby and David Black NFL center point discussion.

6D’s has the ability to focus in extremely low light levels; down to -3 EV – a full stop dimmer than the 5D Mark III.

11, not 61, AF zones.

41 vs 1 cross type

STM lenses support

Differences

Different full frame sensors 22.1 MP vs 20.9 MP.

Quiet ‘silent’ shutter drive mode on 6D

6D Magnesium alloy, polycarbonate top plate, 5D3 Magnesium alloy

As of May, uncompressed HDMI output for 5D3 but not the 6D

5D3 770g (1.7 lb) vs 6D 950g (2.1 lb)

6 FPS (fast) and 4.5 FPS (slow).

Only one SD card slot for 6D

Only C1 and C2 memories for 6D, no C3 for 5D3

No way to reset file number prefix on 6D, files start with IMG

Play and zoom buttons are now in a good spot

97% coverage for the 6D versus 100%

6D lacks a headphone out to monitor the microphone input

GPS and WiFi for 6D

HDR is a JPEG-only mode on the 6D, 5D has RAW

Similarities

No built-in flash.

Selectable all I-frame (bigger files for more precise editing) or I-P-B (smaller files) compression.

Electronic level

Both have time code

GPS and Wifi New Features

GPS works for videos! But you can’t view the location in Lightroom but you can in MediaInfo.

It is really accurate and you can use it as well to set the time in your camera too.

GPS could run down your camera if left on, since it’s always updating at the intervals you set (default: 15 seconds). My test show 5% battery drain overnight if left on. The GPS radio stays on when the camera is switched off, so it needn’t spend ages recalculating its position when you want to take a photo.

View and email images directly from your iphone, and control the 6D remotely.

Wifi app is nice but no video remote? Loses connection, gopro app is
better keeps connection. Can’t send raw. Wifi turns off after camera
turns off. About 2 meg pixels via email. You can see the video thumbnail but
that’s it. You can focus nice. Bird photographers love this. Distance
is great. No need for a remote timer!

MISC

The audio preamp noise on the 6D seems to be a little better

Which One is for you?

If you do a lot of video I think the clear choice is the 5D Mark III because of the the headphone output, the slightly better high ISO performance, and little to no aliasing or moire.

Wedding photographer, might be the perfect camera for you, except not having two card slots to shoot to, but it has a nice quiet shutter.

Sports? Not having a fast FPS maybe not but having a nice center focus might be good if that is your style.

Basically for the 5D series if you can’t stand the rain either can your Canon 5D. If it is a rebel don’t take it out in any rain or snow.

If I had to sum the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition camera in to one word it would FUN!

I loved getting angles that would have been a bear with my Canon 5D3, like going really low and running with it.

I just liked putting in places that would have been harmful to the 5D3.

I have never had a lens this wide, while I could have corrected the distortion I didn’t want to because for right now I think it looks cool. I’m sure that will wear off after a while.

GoPro Makes You Think Differently

My girls and other people respond differently to this camera compared to 5d. I asked strangers if I could go close on their sunglasses and they had no issues with that, they seemed very relaxed.

Great for vacations when you want to experience it in the moment without looking through a viewfinder or the back of a camera but watch it in real life!

My wife told me we need two of them for next time because I missed a lot of the stuff she saw.

Using this camera is a great exercise to find better composition and put it in different places I never thought of. So small and light I can just hang it over the edge and get the underside of the boat.

This video was taken from three boat trips with Trilogy Excursions out of Maui.

GoPro Hero3 Find Price

Big Picture from a Tiny Camera

Protune feels a little like a Cinestyle, a bit desaturated, definitely flat, and perhaps a little un-sharpened. But I think I like it better than CineStyle or Neutral with contrast all the way down to be honest. Look at this shot with my oldest, to me that is the prefect flat image, I can definitely work with this in post. So much detail in the shadows.

The GoPro seems to have white balance issues outside it would go from spot on to warm all of sudden without any change in light, never had a problem with DSLR with WB outside before. I think when you have some clouds going in a out might be the cause to that. But you can manual adjust and fix the WB to the temp that you want.

I find it works great outside, but inside the quality quickly goes down hill, I had a hard time getting any of my shots with indoor lighting to look awesome. Even with indoor pools I had issues getting a awesome image out of it.

I didn’t do low light test because it was pretty evident that it is not a low light performer. Get my best results with lots of natural sun light.

I like to saturate the hell out if these images to make them fun. Once the sun goes all the way down the quality goes quickly with it. The noise looks nasty compared to a DSLR.

Check out James Drake’s review for resolution tests between all the GoPro cameras which I didn’t do.

Time lapses are fun and easy to do with it, blown away that at 2.8 everything is in focus.

Tips for Using it

Keep your fingers far away from the lens as I learned.

Finding something to slide it on, that works well. Like on sand.

Twisting at you torso worked really well for smooth pans.

Since it’s so small you can physically attach it to something like the side about airplane window and get much better smooth shots. Compare to 5D3 which it hard to anchor to the plane. If you lock the camera off on a subject like a car that takes up at least a 1/4 of the frame it doesn’t matter how jittery the other part of the frame is, the cars are being stationary anchors the shot.

I found when getting water on the port that just blowing on it when I didn’t have anything to dry it off with worked OK.

Forgot my pole on the last boat trip! I so wanted to dip it in the water when we had the dolphins with us.

Thanks to Thomas Brent for providing his underwater footage of the whales and dolphins since I forgot my pole. He was using the GoPro Hero3 White edition.

Auto Everything!

Auto exposure, which is a good thing in some cases in sports everything changes so fast!

The exposure on this thing is so quick and pretty seamless. But not perfect all the time however, in this tunnel shot it worked fine, but not in this tunnel shot.

Fast Shutter Speed, ISO and Aperture Numbers

Does not follow the 180 shutter rule. Much faster. Shutter (30 to 2,000?).

Waiting to hear back what the range of the shutter is.

Not a big fan of how some of my clips with the fast shutter do not mix well with ones with smoother motion blur.

You can get ND filters to slow down the shutter speed.

100-400 ISO.

Fixed at f2.8 all the time!

Slow Motion at 240fps!

Lot of fun with this on the slide at 60fps at 720p.

If you think you can’t use the low resolution that the 240fps gives you, you can always do a tile picture-in-picture like this, which is fun.

Not a Comparison Review – Is this something I would Use?

Not a comparison video like my other reviews. Not going to compare it to the Sony or Contour or even my iPhone. I just want to see if this type of camera is worth owning. Would I use it enough or would it sit in my camera bag unused after the novelty wore off?

Camera Locks Up – Freezes

After a whale breached 3 times in front of the boat, my wife comes to find me and said you got that right? I said no, and she said ahhh, how could you miss that?

Does lock up. Take battery out.

Lock up when you turn it on and see the movie icon an that’s it, can’t do anything including turning it off. Pain to pull the battery, wait for 10 seconds while missing a bunch of shots, try doing this when it is freezing on a ski slope with gloves on. If I didn’t turn it off and let it run it would be fine, but if I turned it off to save the battery it might or might not work when I go to turn it on.

Call support, talked to Collin from GoPro, he said the locking up issue can be cause my three things.

Firmware not up to date, but mine was: {

Not formatting the card, but I think I was, when you ‘delete all’ it formats the card

Or low quality Micro SD card, but my was a good one he told me.

If not those 3 above then it could be “faulty hardware”. My guess is I need to reformat each time, now that I know how.

Where is the Battery Life!

With Wi-Fi turned on it is very disheartening to see the first battery bar disappear in what seems just minutes after turning it on.

One hour and 15 minute time lapse with the Wi-Fi turned off.

When the GoPro is charging you have no indication out how far along it is in terms of the charge, seems to take forever to charge too. With the GoPro BacPac battery back I was getting about 100 to 150 20 sec clips before it would die which was perfect leaving it on for 2 hours straight.

Oh there’s a cool shot I want to do. Oh bummer the battery still not charged. 3 sometime 4 hours!

Wi-Fi Remote and iPhone App

The iphone app is awesome because you can change settings so quickly without fumbling around all the menus. It is also great for framing up your shots if you need to.

Amazing that the Wi-Fi can pass no problem thru multiple walls in my house but can’t do more than an inch underwater.

The GoPro also comes with WiFi remote, I didn’t get the kit. I never used it.

Suction Cup Mount

GoPro Suction Cup Mount

I didn’t trust this thing, because after mounting really well on a clean super smooth surface, some 15 minutes later it would fall off.

Chesty Mount

Chest Mount

I used it mountain biking

Used it snorkeling.

This worked really well.

Ride and Pole Mount

I really used the GoPro ride mount a lot.

Doesn’t have a tripod mount on the camera itself. Mistake.

I need a better pole than the little monopod I have because the camera would swivel when in moving water.

Optional LCD Touch BacPac

I also got to test out the optional GoPro LCD touch BacPac.

The only place I use the GoPro is out in bright daylight and that is the one place you can’t see the screen. Polarized sunglasses didn’t help either.

Unfortunately you can’t see the back of the image no screen the Wi-Fi during a time lapse when you need it most. Can’t see the battery life because if you look at the front of the camera it’s so wide you’ll be in the frame.

I liked actually not using it, it was kind of like film, you didn’t know what you got until later which I think works great for vacations where you want to be present in the moment.

Much rather use the extra battery pack than the LCD any day so I know it wouldn’t die on me after a short time.

Helmet Mount

I never used it for some reason, I should have tried the helmet mount but I just didn’t have time.

Hard to edit with than Red Footage

My computer has a tough time with footage. Like playing it backwards.

Misc

You can damage it if you fly with it within it’s case, when I opened it I hear a vacuum.

The hero3 is a perfect match for the DJI Phantom quadrocopter which costs about $700.

SD card so small, terrified I will lose it. Port cover so easy to lose.

Audio

Audio is useless you, are going to need some good background music for you videos. But kind of works for sync audio.

For audio with the GoPro Hero3 which I didn’t test check out Chad Johnson’s video.

So Will I Buy One?

So should I be a hero and buy one?

$400 is a lot, but it is such a very powerful tool in such a tiny package.

Yes I want one! But I don’t want this one I reviewed because it has issues, I guess I will wait until they fix the locking up issue, or keep buying them until I find one that doesn’t lock up. When I go to NAB next month I will stop by their booth and ask how they are coming fixing these issues.

The GoPro is not a DSLR but it’s a good supplement for your cameras package. Crazy idea instead of buying 16mm 35 l lens by GoPro don’t have enough money. But this thought processes only applies outside shooting of course.

While in Maui on vacation I met up with Michael Andrew who does crash course training videos for photography, since I started doing similar courses but on shooting video with the same type of cameras I thought it would be fun to meet him in person.

The place we eat at was not to busy so I setup my camera and asked him a few questions:

I told him some of the places I was going on the island and he provide some things to look out for.

What is the first piece of equipment for a beginner to get for photography?

What are 3 places you love to shot at?

For those that might be getting good at DSLR video but want to bring their photography up a level, what do you recommend.

Check out his Canon 6D vs Nikon D600 review.

His new 365 project site is not running yet that he mentioned but will be live in late March.

I thought this was awesome and insane all at the same time! I didn’t have any paper on me to write their names down to give them credit but I told them to watch for my site in about a week so, I hope they visit and comment below. I think one is Jimmy Hackett.

This was taken on my way down Haleakala after shooting my picture at the top. I am sure glad I had me camera ready.

I used to skateboard a ton when I was younger but nothing like this! I can’t believe they passed cars on both the inside and outside.

Paul Hemmen provided the other version for my Haleakala photo.
