A Pan Am stewardess shares her experiences

2011-09-26T01:33:00.000-07:00

Shirley McMahan lived the life of a Pan Am stewardess back in 1955, and while the new ABC show "Pan Am" may look glamorous, Shirley sets us straight.

Back in 1955 Shirley said she wanted to see the world and decided to become a Pan Am stewardess.

"I always wanted to be a stewardess. I went to Ohio State for 2 years and I waited until I was 21, and then I applied to Pan Am," said Shirley.

At the time, there weren't many career options that fit Shirley's needs.

Shirley says "nursing and teaching, neither of which I wanted."

What Shirley wanted was to fly overseas, and because she spoke Spanish, she flew to Latin American countries.

Shirley got a big kick out of watching a "Pan Am" promotion where girdles were prominent.

Yes they wore girdles, but "we didn't have somebody slapping us on the rear end to see if we had one one!"

The job wasn't all glamorous, but Shirley especially remembers an overnight flight from Caracas to Rio.

"We were not allowed to sleep, while everybody else did, and in the morning, we made eggs," said Shirley.

Still Shirley says it was a wonderful time in her life and she "wouldn't give it up for the world."

She did give it all up after only 2 years, for something better, marriage. Now "Pan Am" is bringing back memories and some laughs.

Behind the Scenes of ‘Harry Potter’ Stars’ Big Kiss

2011-09-21T06:26:00.000-07:00

It was a cinematic moment ten years and eight movies in the making. A scene fans were dying to see, and one the actors were dreading to film. It was the long-awaited kiss between Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2."

Fans all over the world got to see the epic smooch when the movie played this summer, bringing in $1.3 billion dollars (the most of any "Harry Potter" movie). But now for the first time you can take a look behind the scenes to see how stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson handled the dramatic scene. Take a look at an exclusive clip from the bonus features of the upcoming Blu-ray release.

In the video, David Yates, the director of the last four "Harry Potter" films, explains that the two actors had different approaches to filming the kiss. He said that since Emma Watson didn't want to have to do multiple takes of the scene, she was "going to get it right the first time." He tells how he could see her psyche herself up before the camera rolled, but Rupert Grint hadn't worked up to the same level of intensity. "I think Rupert wasn't quite expecting it," Yates said, "and then she just went for it." But then the kiss was quickly broken as the two friends burst out laughing.

While it might seem like kissing isn't a bad way to spend a work day, Grint and Watson explained to the UK's TelegraphTV why the scene was so difficult for them. "It feels weird saying this, because I'm sure loads of guys are just really jealous," Grint said. "I mean, she's lovely. I just felt so wrong, really. Kissing this person I've known since she was nine."

Watson said she also felt quite a bit of pressure to please the fans who had been waiting so long for the kiss to happen. She said, "Can you imagine, building up to a kiss for, like, ten years? We've been building up for this kiss for a decade. How am I going to do this justice? I felt like it's the most anticipated kiss of all time. So, it was intense."

There will be many more behind-the-scenes secrets revealed in the bonus features of the upcoming Blu-ray. In the "Maximum Movie Mode," actor Matthew Lewis (who played Neville Longbottom) hosts a feature-length look at the making of the film's stand-out scenes. The Blu-ray will also have a conversation between star Daniel Radcliffe and author J.K. Rowling where they discuss how "Potter" has changed both of their lives. And it will present deleted scenes, with moments that were left out of the final film.

Mayweather has just wins in 4th round KO

2011-09-18T06:39:00.000-07:00

Floyd Mayweather, left, and Victor Ortiz square off for a photo after a boxing news conference, Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, in Las Vegas. The pair are slated to fight for Oritz' WBC welterweight title on Saturday, Sept. 17

Just in one round, Floyd Mayweather Jr. got a head butt, a kiss and a hug from Victor Ortiz.

He responded with a right hand that ended a bizarre fight early.

Mayweather remained unbeaten and did it in emphatic fashion Saturday night, stopping Ortiz at 2:59 of the fourth round to take the piece of the welterweight title Ortiz brought into the ring.

The end came just as the two fighters emerged from a break, in which Ortiz had embraced Mayweather in the center of the ring. As they broke, Mayweather shot out a left hand and followed it with a right that put Ortiz down in his corner.

Ortiz struggled to get up as referee Joe Cortez called an end to the fight.

"We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break," Mayweather said. "In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times."

The round was already controversial, as Ortiz appeared to head butt Mayweather intentionally, leading Cortez to take a point away from him. After the head butt, Ortiz went to Mayweather and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

Seconds later they were in the center of the ring ready to resume action when two punches ended it quickly.

"I took the break by the referee and I obeyed exactly as I was told," Ortiz said. "And then, boom, he blindsided me."

Mayweather was winning the fight through three rounds, dominating with speed and landing good right hands to the head of Ortiz. He won all three rounds on two ringside scorecards, and two of three on the third.

Ortiz picked up the pace in the fourth round, trying desperately to get inside Mayweather's vaunted defense. He did on occasion and was having a better round when, late in the round, he appeared to intentionally head butt Mayweather in frustration as the two fought in Mayweather's corner.

"He did something dirty when it was his corner who said I was dirty," Mayweather said. "But I won the fight."

Mayweather later engaged in a verbal confrontation with HBO announcer Larry Merchant, calling him a name at one point and drawing a pointed response from the veteran broadcaster, who said he would thrash the boxer if he "was 50 years younger."

While Ortiz claimed he was caught by a punch that came before Cortez ruled the fighters to continue, the referee said Mayweather did nothing wrong.

"Time was in, the fighter needed to keep his guard up. Mayweather did nothing illegal," Cortez said.

Mayweather, a 5-1 favorite in the fight against a champion 10 years younger, had vowed to go right after Ortiz and give the fans who bought the pay-per-view card at home an exciting fight. He mostly delivered on that promise, landing some good right hands in the early rounds and winning exchanges with his quickness.

But he hadn't really hurt Ortiz and took some punches himself in the fourth round as Ortiz seemed to rally before the head butt touched off the series of events that brought the fight to an end. Ortiz quickly apologized to Mayweather after the head butt, giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek while Cortez was busy taking a point away from him.

There was another quick hug in the center of the ring as action was about to resume, followed by the 1-2 combination by Mayweather that put Ortiz on his rear. Ortiz tried to get up, but was still on his knees when the fight was waved to a close.

"There's two ways to look at it but as far as I was concerned I came here to entertain the fans and I think they were entertained," Ortiz said. "There was a miscommunication with the referee but nobody is perfect and this was a learning experience."

Mayweather made a minimum of $25 million for his first fight in 16 months, a sum that will likely go up as the pay-per-view receipts are totaled. He could make even more against Manny Pacquiao next May should Pacquiao win his November fight with Juan Manuel Marquez and the two finally agree to fight.

Mayweather remained unbeaten in 42 fights, scoring the knockout he had predicted. Ortiz, who lost his 147-pound title, fell to 29-3-2.

Miss Universe 2011 winner is Miss Angola, Leila Lopes

2011-09-14T10:48:00.000-07:00

A new Miss Universe was crowned Monday night: She's Miss Angola, business student Leila Lopes, and she plans to work on HIV advocacy worldwide, in addition to helping her own country.

"As Miss Angola I've already done a lot to help my people," Lopes, 25, said Tuesday morning after taking home the crown. "I've worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs.

"I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more."

Those who weren't watching the Denver Broncos notch a loss to the Oakland Raiders were treated to a parade of international hotties doing their pageant thing in Sao Paulo, Brazil -- and that "pageant thing" of course includes a final round of questions for the Top 5.

This year's questions included three that might've come directly from the Ministry of Gossip, plus a couple that clearly were not loaded with any political agenda whatsoever:

Nude beaches are common in some parts of the world. Is public nudity appropriate or inappropriate and why?
If you could change one of your physical characteristics, which one would it be and why?
If you could trade lives with anyone in history, who would it be and why?
Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love? Why and why not?
What would you do to avoid fighting a war that you did not agree with it?

Miss Philippines stuck to her guns on the faith front, saying she wouldn't marry a person if she had to convert to do so, and that a person who loved her would respect her enough to love her God too. Miss Angola stuck with her own physical characteristics, thanking God for doing right by her in the looks department and reminding people that we should all respect one another.

Miss China, broaching the nudity question, gave a short answer about all countries having their own rules and customs, which should all be respected. Miss Brazil said she'd handle the war problem by explaining that war is not based on respect but rather "always based on misunderstanding, it's always based on a lack of education. So I would tell this person that we should respect each other as human beings."

Miss Ukraine, meanwhile, said she would swap lives with Cleopatra -- "a very powerful and strong woman who is very much worthy of respect."

Here's the order in which they finished: Miss China, Luo Zilin, fourth runner-up; Miss Philippines, Shamcey Supsup, third runner-up; Miss Brazil, Priscila Machado, second runner-up; and Miss Ukraine, Olesia Stefanko, first runner-up.

Lopes was crowned by Miss Universe 2010, Ximena Navarrete from Mexico. Miss USA (and Miss California) Alyssa Campanella made it into 2011's Top 15 out of a total of 88 contestants. Who advanced was decided in rounds of preliminary competition held during the week leading up to Monday night's show.

According to pageant watchers inside the arena, Lopes charmed the locals in part by speaking Portuguese, a language former colonies Angola and Brazil share.

"She captivated the crowd and we were all behind her," said Brazilian Natalie Bursztyn, 20. "It was great that the judges also saw what the fans saw and gave her the crown."

And for the football fans -- plus anyone who couldn't tear themselves away from the online post-game debate that followed the GOP candidates' debate -- we've included video from the pageant's swimsuit photo shoot, down below. Why? Because we know you, and we love you.

49ers coach Harbaugh thrilled to squash Seahawks

2011-09-12T14:17:00.000-07:00

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh yells at a referee during their game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. The 49ers defeated the Seahawks 33-17.

SAN FRANCISCO — Ted Ginn Jr. carried the game ball to keep for himself, and packed away two more footballs from his game-saving kick returns to present his twins.

Jim Harbaugh didn’t need a single souvenir. Hugs all around would do, from his parents, from his players.

He left Candlestick Park on Sunday with that coveted victory over Pete Carroll and the defending NFC West champions in his NFL debut.

Here’s the deal, Coach Carroll: Harbaugh is one up at this level.

Ginn returned a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in a minute’s span late in the fourth quarter, and the San Francisco 49ers gave Harbaugh a 33-17 win over Seattle in his much-hyped debut and renewed coaching rivalry with Carroll.

“I slept like a baby last night,” said Harbaugh, a father of two young daughters. “I woke up every hour crying, making sure these guys were prepared in every way. And they had our back. Our players did a heck of a job.”

Especially Ginn, who delivered right when the Seahawks thought the momentum was theirs.

He ran a kickoff back 102 yards moments after the defending NFC West champion Seahawks had closed within 19-17. It was the second-longest kick return at home and fourth-longest in team history. He then scored on a 55-yard punt return.

It was the first time in 49ers history they had a kickoff return and a punt return for touchdowns — let alone by the same player.

Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry’s Cheerleading Starts

2011-09-08T03:40:00.000-07:00

Both are Oscar-winning actresses in their mid-40s. Both have gone through bad breakups. And both are stunningly beautiful. But Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry have something else in common that may be a surprise: The two started off as cheerleaders. And we've got the pictures to prove it.

Before the A-listers were screen divas, the two rocked the pom poms, and in Halle's case, the splits. Photographs unearthed from these actors' pasts show they certainly had talent -- even in their teens.

Another odd coincidence: Both have won Academy Awards, as well as Razzies for worst performances (Berry for "Catwoman" and Bullock for "All About Steve"). Again, the two showed their cheerful sides, appearing in person to collect their infamous "worst actress" raspberry-shaped awards.

Sandra Bullock

Bullock won an Oscar for her role as an inspirational figure on the sidelines of the high school football field in "The Blind Side." In real life, she cheered for her high school team at Washington Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, back in 1982.

The funny gal got noticed with spirited parts in movies like "Speed" and "Miss Congeniality," but received her Oscar in a dramatic role.

These days, the 47-year-old seems to be featured more in the tabloids than in movies, currently for her close friendship with sexy "Proposal" co-star Ryan Reynolds.

Bullock also surfaces in photos with her 19-month-old son, Louis Bardo, whom she is raising alone after splitting from her husband Jesse James in 2010. Bullock will be back on the big screen soon with the upcoming movies "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and "Gravity."

Halle Berry

Halle Berry seems to defy gravity in her high school cheerleading pic. Even back in 1980, the peppy teen wowed people at her Heskett Junior High School in Bedford, Ohio, with the splits.

The Oscar winner has shown athleticism in many roles, from her turn as a Bond babe in "Die Another Day" to playing the mutant Storm in "X-Men." The Leo recently set the Web on fire with her beach bikini pics at her 45th birthday party.

The actress divorced actor Eric Benet, then got involved with French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry. The pair split in 2010. The two have a daughter, Nahla Ariela Aubrywith. The actress is currently seeing hunky actor Olivier Martinez.

The three-year-old, who has been the subject of a bitter custody dispute, will be accompanying her mom to Glasgow, Scotland for the filming of "Cloud Atlas," co-starring Natalie Portman and Tom Hanks. Watch for the star's upcoming flicks, "Dark Turn" and "New Year's Eve."

The Very Best TV You're Not Watching : 'Sons of Anarchy'

2011-09-06T10:35:00.000-07:00

While every other Fall TV show starts in mid to late September, and some even as late as October (dammit, Dexter), we’re in luck because one of the best shows on TV starts early. This Tuesday, Sept. 6, the fourth season of FX’s Sons Of Anarchy begins. If you’re a fan of great serial TV drama, SOA is definitely for you. In a nutshell, it’s The Sopranos on motorcycles, and even using that description lessens the value of this thrill–ride.

Even if you haven’t been onboard for the first three seasons, now is actually a great time to jump on. The entire motorcycle club from the fictional town of Charming, California went to jail at the end of last season and now, they’re out and ready to be back on the streets.

Why You’re Not Watching
It’s Not Easy to Jump Into Without Watching Every Season
Nowadays, if you don’t start watching a series right from get-go, it’s hard to latch on. If you start late, there are already so many storylines and characters you have to learn about. Can you imagine watching Lost without ever seeing episode one? The mythology is simply too overwhelming, and Sons has its fair share of mythology. On top of the storylines that are on the air, Sons have about three or four different storylines underneath the surface; they’re barely mentioned, but they’re there. And it’s when they come to the forefront that the show is at its best. Remember, this is a motorcycle club that dates back to the late sixties with MCs stretching as far as Ireland (where most of Season Three took place), and that’s a lot of backstory to take in.

Sons’ Storylines are Not For the Faint of Heart
If you’ve read the memoir, No Angel, by Jay Dobbins, or Hell’s Angels, by Hunter S. Thompson, then you know how violent and insane the world of motorcycle clubs can be. That aspect comes out in a big way on the FX series. We witness rival gangs, murders, rapes, police action, crazed ATF agents, fighting within the club, kidnapping, and I’m leaving a whole slew of stuff out, but it’s all there and it’s all so raw. Creator Kurt Sutter, along with the entire cast and crew leave their egos at the door and create such a realistic, violent world for these characters to play in. But if your stomach – and in some cases, your tear ducts – can’t handle the madness, then go find a fluffy cookie-cutter procedural where the good guys are truly good and the bad guys get brought to court justice at the end of the hour. Sons runs on outlaw justice and it’s usually served with unrelenting and unmerciful bloodshed.

Motorcycle Clubs Are Uncharted Television Territory
MCs aren’t limited to the famed Hell’s Angels; they’re all over. And if you don’t know about the MC lifestyle, it’s likely pretty foreign to you. Unlike the mafia, or the government, it’s a world that hasn’t been as marketed over the years, and that is by design of the MCs themselves. These are clubs, and they are strictly for members only. For many people, even fellow motorcycle riders, it’s a world that you either don’t know about or don’t want to know about. Often, Sons can be a bit of a scary show, because many of the storylines are 100 percent plausible.

Bikes Sons of AnarchyWhat You’re Missing
The Action Literally Never Stops
Whether it’s a gunfight, a fistfight, the boys riding their choppers, or just intense dialogue, there’s narrowly a moment to breathe when watching Sons. Like any great action movie, the stories usually warrant the action that stems from them. For those who aim to start watching from the beginning, must-see scenes include the Sons blowing up a factory in pilot, the race to save Jax’s son in the final episode of Season Two, and the prison brawl between Clay and Jax in episode seven of Season Two. Where The Sopranos spent a lot of time talking about the impending violence without really showing it, Sons of Anarchy walks the walk and talks the talk.

Amazing Performances from an Amazing Cast
An ensemble piece like Sons of Anarchy needs to have a strong cast; each member must be capable of hitting scenes right out the park. Sons has that ten-fold. Particular stand-outs are Charlie Hunnam, who plays Jackson “Jax” Teller with a tortured, soulful mindset and dirty, gritty exterior; Ron Perlman plays club president, Clay Morrow, with duplicitous intent in every single scene; and then there’s Katey Sagal, who should serve as a blueprint on how typecast actors can stop being typecast. Her character, Gemma Teller-Morrow, is so far removed from the rambunctious redhead, Peggy Bundy, from Married…With Children that it’s downright scary. If I didn’t know better, I’d never guess both characters are played by the same actress.

Decades-old Backstories Rule
Trust me, you don’t need to know about the history of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original (SAMCRO), but knowing the backstory does help you enjoy the show a little more. Don’t worry; you won’t need to read up on any books, there are a slew of expository scenes in several episodes that paint a clear picture of everything that’s going on in the series.

The Bottom Line
There’s a line in the Metallica song, “Motorbreath,” that goes: “It’s hard and it’s heavy and dirty and mean.” That’s one part of the show, another part of the series is its Shakespearean influence–the series is a modern day Macbeth. Sons pulls no punches with its stories, its acting, or its twisted sense of humor. If you like your TV to be gritty and soulful, with a twinge Americana, Sons of Anarchy is most definitely for you.

Soderbergh's Contagion: Don't Touch Gwyneth Paltrow!

2011-09-04T13:44:00.000-07:00

As the house lights dimmed in the Venice Film Festival's Darsena Theater before the beginning of Contagion, a man sitting just behind us let out a few rasping coughs. That's not unusual in any movie house just before the feature starts; and journalists, for whom the world-premiere screening was held, are not a particularly robust bunch. Then Gwyneth Paltrow, playing a businesswoman on a flight from Hong Kong to Chicago, emitted the same hard bark — and in a few screen minutes her character was dead from the globe-girdling virus that is the subject of Steven Soderbergh's deadly plausible new thriller. When the fellow one row back kept up his hacking, I wondered if he was the kind of "plant" that horror-movie producer William Castle used to put in theaters to make weird noises and scare the real customers.
Soderbergh's Contagion: Don't Touch Gwyneth Paltrow!

Except that, with Contagion, the real fear comes when you leave the theater. Scott Z. Burns's original script dramatizes, with brisk ruthlessness, the dangers of touching anyone who may be infected — or anything he or she may have touched. Remember Dennis Miller's joke, back in the '90s, that you had to worry about getting AIDS not just from people you had sex with but from people you wanted to have sex with? Well, this is a disease you could get from a family member, a coworker, a subway sneezer or anyone near anyone who comes near you. One of Contagion's creepiest scenes comes early in the film, when a distinguished research scientist (Elliott Gould) glances around a diner and instantly spots a dozen places where the virus could contaminate and swiftly kill a customer: the rim of a glass, the hands of a hash slinger, an unsterilized fork, a mouth that coughs.

The Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 killed more than 50 million people, perhaps 5% of the world's population at the time, and infected about 500 million. That catastrophe took two years to play out. Today, in a few days, a few people on transcontinental flights could unknowingly spread a much more severe plague. And if the virus is a new strain, as in Contagion, months could pass before it was isolated, years before a potent antidote could be found, produced, marketed and distributed. Innocence would be no protection; the only sure antidotes would be home confinement and a healthy paranoia.

Docudrama style, the movie weaves scenes of epidemiologists to locate the source of the virus and break its code with vignettes of ordinary folks facing mortality or its imminent threat. Knowing from his direction of the similarly sprawling Traffic that an audience needs famous actors as signposts in such a peripatetic narrative, Soderbergh cast Laurence Fishburne and Bryan Cranston as officials at the Centers for Disease Control, Kate Winslet as a super-sleuth for the Epidemic Intelligence Service and Marion Cotillard as a doctor from the World Health Organization who tracks the virus back to Hong Kong. Matt Damon, playing Paltrow's husband, is the frightened but resolute face of American citizenry; and Jude Law is a rogue blogger who is the first journalist to stumble onto the story and promptly puts the panic in pandemic.

This is Soderbergh's 22nd feature in 22 years; his first was sex, lies, and videotape, followed by crowdpleasers like Erin Brockovich and the Ocean's Eleven (Twelve, Thirteen) capers and several defiantly indie efforts (Solaris, Bubble, Che, The Girlfriend Experience). Acting as his own cinematographer, under the name Peter Andrews, and producing many other films (Pleasantville, Far from Heaven, Syriana), Soderbergh is a whirling creative force with an elusive directorial personality. But the man does have a gift for organization, both in putting projects and actors together and in bringing clarity to teeming narratives — skills put to excellent use here. And in Burns, who also wrote Soderbergh's drily off-kilter The Informant!, with Damon as a corporate whistle-blower with a secret agenda, he has found a crafty collaborator who knows his craft.

For a good hour, a very good first hour, the film efficiently accumulates small, terrifying incidents and images: Paltrow's haggard face on the flight home; the flecks of froth on a man's mouth; the refusal of a mortician to host funeral services for the victims; and, in this fastidious melodrama's one uggy moment, the peeling back of a corpse's scalp to allow an autopsy. Later, as the news spreads with the virus and terror propels the population into rabid belligerence, the movie sedates its pulse, softens its focus and threatens to become a straightfaced Zombieland. There's also an unnecessary climactic kidnapping. But Burns and Soderbergh manage to tell their epidemiological epic in a hurtling, compact 105 minutes. Perhaps for purposes of concision, or because they wanted to skirt politics, the filmmakers omitted any pharma executives or federal or local politicians from their character list. That leaves a curious hole, but Contagion is a movie, not a miniseries.

If the film has a villain, it's Law's blogger, named Krumwiede (as in crumb-weed, which sounds like an eight-year-old's insult), fanning genuine fear and fake cures. But Contagion does have a heroine in Ally Haskell (Jennifer Ehle), a Bio-Safety Lab doctor with the expertise and guts to risk her life to find a cure. It's a treat to see Ehle, a winning, often underused actress, in a crucial movie role. Her warm, flinty performance, first among equals in a strong cast, is one of the prime lessons to take away from this intelligent Surgeon General's advisory of a film. Another would be to wear rubber gloves and a cloth mouth-mask when you see Contagion. There might be a cougher nearby.

Kim Kardashian Wedding: Kourtney Stumbled Carrying Mason Down the Aisle

2011-08-21T04:57:00.000-07:00

Kim Kardshian's wedding is over, and reportedly, the entire ceremony was charming. One of those charms, her nephew Mason, nearly caused a major mishap. Her sister and maid of honor Kourtney stumbled while carrying the ring bearer down the aisle.

As many young ring bearers do, Mason did not want to go down the aisle, so his mom helped him carry the "K" embossed pillow. Of course, as she started, Kourtney tripped a bit, and the entire crowd gasped at what could have been a hugely embarrassing moment for the maid of honor. Thankfully, nothing happened, and little Mason continued down the aisle with the pillow all by himself. After getting to the wedding party, he went to sit with his dad, Scott Disick.

With children in a wedding party, you never can tell what will happen, and that is part of their adorable charm. Kim Kardashian is a proud aunt, and even though Mason began crying during the closing prayer at the ceremony, there is little doubt that she would not change a thing about including the little man in her special day.

When Take Sex Scene With Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson Laughs

2011-08-18T23:17:00.000-07:00

Robert Pattinson is laughing and poking fun at his own sex scene with Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn, Part 1.” According to Rob the scene has hilarious moments based upon the difficulties that vampires experience when having sex with humans.

On ‘True Blood’ there doesn’t seem to be much of a problem as long as the vampire keeps its blood lust in check. However Edward Cullen has his hands full trying to keep himself from ripping out Bella Swan’s throat and draining her of all her blood.

As an alternative to turning Bella into a buffet, Eddie he rips through the bed pillows with his fangs and sends feathers flying.

“I wanted to have it as a line so much,” Rob said in a recent interview: “‘I bit through all the pillows. Every. Single. One.’ And then he’d start crying.”

“By the way, that’s what he should be ashamed of in the morning – All those beautiful pillows! Egyptian cotton! [Laughs] I ruined this bed,” Rob laughed.

Imagine if Edward went totally vampire on Bella?! Tearing her throat open and drinking all of her blood just at the passion of their mutual lust climaxed would really shock fans. But alas, then there would be no more sequels and no more money… so we have to settle for pillows.

Kanye West and Jay-Z Auctioning Off Mutilated $373,000 Maybach for Charity

2011-08-15T14:10:00.000-07:00

In "Otis," the first video from the Kanye West and Jay-Z (a.k.a the Throne) joint album Watch the Throne, the two hip-hop moguls oversee some unconventional body work to what appears to be a brand-new Maybach: The German luxury car -- base sticker price approximately $373,000 for the cheapest model -- gets sliced and diced with a blowtorch and power saw. In the first 30 seconds of the clip, the automobile loses its roof and doors and gets remixed into an open-air Jeep-style vehicle perfect for joyriding around a parking lot with a quartet of young ladies in the back seat while fireworks blast off, which is exactly what Jay and Kanye proceed to do in the Spike Jonze-directed video.

MTV News asked an expert to appraise the cost of the damage (or improvements, depending on your take) to the car, and the price ranged from $20,000 for a quickie job -- just the welding and painting -- to $150,000 for a fully reinforced frame. Expensive? Sure, but Jay allegedy spent $250K on a bar tab last night, so it probably didn't break his bank. "The thing is, the value of that car is nothing now, you couldn't drive it on the street," DUB magazine's Myles Kovacs told MTV. "It would start malfunctioning bigtime."

Jay-Z and Kanye West are certainly presuming the car is worth far more than "nothing," however -- according to a note posted at the end of the video, they're planning to auction the Frankenbach off for charity: "The vehicle used in this video will be offered up for auction. Proceeds will be donated towards the East African drought disaster." AllHipHop confirmed the auction is legit with the rappers' reps. (The group's publicist hasn't yet responded to The Amp's request to confirm the Maybach is the real deal.) No word how or when the vehicle will be sold off, but potential buyers should presumably plan to host lavish Watch the Throne listening sessions in the car rather than go cruising in it.

“I have eight kids, I have a crazy work schedule, I’m known. It’s sort of daunting when I think about the obstacles. I’m hoping that person is out there, because the kids on a daily basis are just begging me to get married again. They bring it up all the time.”

Unfortunately Kate’s not as well-known as she’d like to think. The Washington Post has an uncomfortable little story about Kate having bodyguard Steve Neild chase down a guy she thought was cute outside of Georgetown Cupcake in D.C., and lure him to Kate with the aforementioned trendy dessert. Unfortunately it wasn’t a love connection – the guy wanted a gluten-free cupcake. And he didn’t know who Kate was.

Tearful Jolie gets Sarajevo film festival award

2011-07-30T20:15:00.000-07:00

Angelina Jolie poses with Heart of Sarajevo award which she received during 17th …

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie was close to tears as she received a special award during an unannounced visit to Sarajevo's film festival Saturday with partner Brad Pitt.

"I will start crying if you don't stop," Oscar-awarded Jolie told the audience who gave her a standing ovation at the city's National Theater.

Jolie chose Bosnia's 1992-95 war as the setting for her first film as a director. "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is due to be released in December.

She has also visited Bosnia as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N.'s refugee agency UNHCR and funded the construction of several houses for returnees in eastern Bosnia.

Festival director Mirsad Purivatra presented Jolie with a heart-shaped award when she appeared at the closing ceremony.

"Tonight we are giving the honorary Heart of Sarajevo to a great artist, not only for the great impact she has in the world of cinema but also for persisting and her active engagement in the complexities of the real world we live in," Purivatra said.

Jolie, dressed in a long peach dress, stood on stage with eyes full of tears waiting for the clapping to die down.

"I told Brad in the car I was afraid I was going to cry," she said, her voice breaking.

Jolie's film tells the story of a love affair between a Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) woman and a Serb, who were on opposite warring sides during the conflict.

She planned to shoot parts of the film in Sarajevo and engaged a local crew. But she had to move to Budapest after some female victims of sexual violence objected to details in the plot and

Bosnian authorities canceled a filming permit.

"I am so honored to be here at this festival," Jolie said after receiving the award. "There is no greater example of the strengths of the artists and the festival that began during the war and grew stronger every year."

The Sarajevo film festival was launched toward the end of the Bosnian capital's 43-month siege by Bosnian Serb forces.

Jolie presented Austrian actor Thomas Schubert with the award for the best actor for his role in the film "Atmen," directed by Karl Markovics.

Atmen, about a young offender searching for his mother, was also named best film in the festival.

Romanian actress Ada Condeascu won the prize for best actress for her role in the film "Loverboy."

She won the Filmfare Best Actress award. In 2003, she acted the part of Binodini in a Bengali film Choker Bali which was based on a novel by Rabindranath Tagore. Her performance as Neerja in Rituparno Ghosh’s Raincoat was praised. This was followed by her second English film in 2005, The Mistress of Spices, with Dylan McDermott of The Practice fame. Her dance sequence Kajra Re from Bunty Aur Babli became one of the most popular tunes of the year.

She had two films out in 2006. Umrao Jaan with Abhishek Bachchan failed to do well while Dhoom 2 where she played Sunehri and shared a ‘controversial’ liplock with Hrithik Roshan was a big hit. NORWAY GUNMAN DEEMS KILLINGS "ATROCIOUS,"NECESSARY"

2011-07-24T04:42:00.000-07:00

SUNDVOLLEN, Norway (Reuters) - A Norwegian right-wing fanatic who killed at least 92 people believes his acts were atrocious but necessary, his lawyer said, as the nation mourned victims of its worst attacks since World War Two.

Police were investigating on Sunday whether a possible second gunman took part in the shooting massacre and bomb attack on Friday that traumatized a normally peaceful Nordic country.

But they also defended the speed of their response to the second stage of the attack when the gunman was able to shoot unchallenged for a prolonged period on an island outside Oslo, shortly after the huge bomb went off in the capital.

In his first comment via a lawyer since he was arrested, 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik expressed willingness to explain himself in court at a hearing likely to be held on Monday about extending his custody.

"He has said that he believed the actions were atrocious, but that in his head they were necessary," lawyer Geir Lippestad told independent TV2 news, adding that his client admitted to both the shootings and the bombing.

Police said Breivik gave himself up to armed officers when they arrived on the small island of Utoeya in a lake about 42 km (26 miles) northwest of Oslo where at least 85 people were gunned down. Most were teenagers and young adults attending a summer camp of the youth wing of Norway's ruling Labor Party.

About 650 people were on the island when the gunman, wearing a police uniform according to witnesses, opened fire. Police said it took them one hour to stop the massacre from when they first received information about the shootings, the worst by a single gunman in modern times.

RESPONSE TIME

"The response time from when we got the message was quick. There were problems with transport out to the island," police chief Sveinung Sponheim said, defending the delay.

Witnesses said the gunman picked off his victims at will, forcing youngsters to scatter in panic or to jump into the lake to swim for the mainland.

Breivik was also arrested for the bombing in Oslo's government district that killed seven people hours earlier. Norway's toughest sentence is 21 years in jail. Police believe Breivik drove to Utoeya after the explosion in the capital.

Survivors, relatives of those killed and supporters planned a procession to mourn the dead at Sundvollen on Sunday, near the island where the massacre took place.

King Harald is due to attend a service in Oslo cathedral, a few hundred meters (yards) from where a bomb devastated government buildings including the offices of Labor Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.

Police said they were seeking several missing people and the toll could rise to 98, in the worst case.

Lippestad, speaking late on Saturday, did not give more details of possible motives by Breivik.

Breivik hated "cultural marxists," wanted a "crusade" against the spread of Islam and liked guns and weightlifting, web postings, acquaintances and officials said.

A video posted on the YouTube website showed several pictures of Breivik, including one of him in a scuba diving outfit pointing an automatic weapon.

"Before we can start our crusade we must do our duty by decimating cultural marxism," said a caption under the video called "Knights Templar 2083" on the YouTube website, which took down the video on Saturday.

A Norwegian website provided a link to a 1,500 page electronic manifesto which says Breivik was the author. It was not possible to verify who posted the video or wrote the book.

"Once you decide to strike, it is better to kill too many than not enough, or you risk reducing the desired ideological impact of the strike," the book said.

IMMIGRATION

Norway has traditionally been open to immigration, which has been criticized by the populist Progress Party, of which Breivik was a former member. The Labor Party, whose youth camp Breivik attacked, has long backed multi-culturalism to accommodate Norway's different ethnic communities.

About 100 people stood solemnly early on Sunday at a makeshift vigil near Oslo's main church, laying flowers and lighting candles. Soldiers with guns and wearing bullet-proof vests blocked streets leading to the government district.

"We are all in sorrow, everybody is scared," said Imran Shah, a Norwegian taxi driver of Pakistani heritage, as a light summer drizzle fell on unusually empty Oslo streets.

"At first, people thought Muslims were behind this," he said, referring to some initial suspicions that the attacks might have been by Al Qaeda, perhaps in protest at NATO-member Norway's role in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Some terrified survivors of the shooting rampage said bullets came from at least two sides.

"We are not at all certain" about whether he acted alone, police chief Sponheim said. "That is one of the things that the investigation will concentrate on."

"I heard screams. I heard people begging for their lives and I heard shots. He just blew them away," Labor Party youth member Erik Kursetgjerde, 18, told Reuters.

"I was certain I was going to die," he said. "People ran everywhere. They panicked and climbed into trees. People got trampled."

Breivik, tall and blond, owned a farming company called Breivik Geofarm, which a supply firm said he had used to buy fertilizer -- possibly to make the Oslo bomb.

Home-grown anti-government militants have struck elsewhere in the past, notably in the United States, where Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people with a truck bomb in Oklahoma City in 1995.

The district attacked is the heart of power in Norway. But security is not tight in a country unused to such violence and better known for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize and mediating in conflicts, including the Middle East and Sri Lanka.

Kim Kardashian sues Old Navy over lookalike in ads

2011-07-21T01:33:00.000-07:00

LOS ANGELES - Kim Kardashian wants Old Navy to stop using a lookalike to advertise its clothing.

The reality show starlet and model on Wednesday sued the clothing store and its parent company, The Gap Inc., in a Los Angeles federal court alleging their ads violated her publicity rights with ads that feature a woman who looks like her.

A video of a broadcast ad featuring a smiling, dark-haired woman who bears a resemblance to the real Kardashian has been viewed more than two million times on Old Navy's YouTube channel.

Kardashian's lawsuit claims consumers may be confused by the ads and the model's actual endorsements, which include her own clothing store and shoe line. A commercial, titled, "Super C-U-T-E," began airing in February and Old Navy is still using some of the promotions, the lawsuit states.

The case cites all the benchmarks of modern celebrity: her eight million followers on Twitter, more than five million fans on Facebook and ranking as one of the most searched-for celebrities on the Internet.

Kardashian "has invested substantial time, energy, finances and entrepreneurial effort in developing her considerable professional and commercial achievements and success, as well as in developing her popularity, fame, and prominence in the public eye," the lawsuit states.

Louise Callagy, a spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Gap said the company has not yet seen the case and had no comment.

Kardashian, 31, has rocketed to fame in recent years after gaining prominence as a friend of Paris Hilton and for having a sex tape. She appears along with her family on the E! Entertainment Television series "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and routinely graces magazine covers.

Her lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages and wants a federal judge to prevent Old Navy from using a Kardashian lookalike model in its ads again.

The model in the ads, Melissa Molinaro, is not named in the lawsuit. She expressed exasperation that the resemblance was being pointed out again. "Were (sic) still talking about this," she posted on Twitter, noting the ad ran five months ago. "Some people have too much time on (their) hands."

July 11-17: Rihanna Is The New Queen Of Facebook, Beating Out Lady Gaga

2011-07-18T00:16:00.000-07:00

Lady Gaga may be the top earning woman in music, have more followers on Twitter than any other lady rock star and receive more media coverage than her female competitors, but she is no longer the queen of Facebook.

This week, Rihanna accumulated enough likes on Facebook to surpass Lady Gaga and claim the throne as the platform's top ranking female celebrity.

According to their Facebook stats, as of Saturday, Rihanna had 40,699,853 likes, and Lady Gaga had 40,611,908, giving the "Rude Boy" singer a lead of 88,000.

Shakira is the diva with the third most Facebook followers, according to Famecount.com, which credits the Latina singer with 37 million likes. Aside from being the top three female musicians on Facebook, they also have earned spots in Facebook's top 10 pages overall. Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Shakira hold the No. 5, 6, and 8, positions, respectively.

There are three men on the Top Facebook Pages Worldwide list as well. Eminem ranks No. 3 with 43,367,713 likes. The late Michael Jackson sits at No. 7 with 38,069,882 likes, and "Baby" singer Justin Bieber holds the No. 10 position with 33,035,903 likes.

Numbers, stats, and figures were also the subject of another news story this week involving a popular female entertainer. Matthew Knowles, father and former manager of Beyoncé, filled legal papers in Texas, alleging his daughter's new management team accused him of stealing money from her, claims he vehemently denies. And in even more shocking family news, power couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony announced their plans to divorce, a month after their seventh anniversary.

Pop star Jewel and her husband, Ty Murray, fortunately, have a happier home front. This week, they announced the birth of their son, Kase Townes. And legendary music shero Cher sang Lady Gaga's praises this week after recording for her new album "The Greatest Thing," a song written and produced for her by Gaga and RedOne.

President Obama raised $86 million for his 2012 re-election effort

2011-07-14T05:11:00.000-07:00

President Obama raised a whopping $86 million for his re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee between April and June, according to an online video sent to supporters early this morning.

The president's campaign raised more than $47 million--surpassing the combined $35 million his 2012 GOP rivals have publicly announced raising so far. (Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum still haven't disclosed their fundraising totals.) Meanwhile, Obama raised more than $38 million for the DNC via a joint fundraising committee set up between the party and his re-election committee.

"Congratulations on this monumental achievement," Jim Messina, Obama's campaign manager, says in the video.

While Obama's fundraising totals far outdistanced his GOP rivals, the president appears to be raising cash at a slower pace for his individual campaign than he did during the 2008 election. Four years ago at this point, Obama had raised a record-breaking $59 million for his presidential campaign--about $12 million more than he's raised so far this year.

Obama's campaign had previously announced it planned to raise $60 million in the month of June alone as it aims to raise at least $750 million for the president's re-election effort.

But Messina sought to cast Obama's second quarter total as a triumph in terms of grassroots support. In the video, he disclosed that 552,462 people have contributed to the Obama campaign--which he touted as "the most grassroots support at this point in the process than any campaign political history."

In a conference call with reporters, Messina said roughly 260,000 of those individuals were "new donors," who had not given to Obama's 2008 campaign. He said 98 percent of all donations were $250 or less, while the average contribution was $69. But full details on Obama's fundraising, including how much cash the campaign has in the bank and who its donors are, won't be available until Friday, when second quarter finance reports are due at the Federal Election Commission.

Messina also declined to specify how much of the $47 million the Obama campaign has raised so far is made up of contributions dedicated to the primary versus the general election. Campaigns are allowed to solicit contributions for both, but aren't allowed to spend general election cash until next year. That breakdown will be revealed in Friday's FEC report.

In spite of Obama's fundraising advantage, Messina still cast the president as an underdog. In the video, he pointed to outside GOP groups that are planning to spend big cash to undermine his re-election bid—even though several Democratic groups, including one formed by two former Obama aides, have popped up to counter that spending.

"We have reason to be proud of what we've built so far, but it's going to get tougher from here," he says in the video. "GOP outside spending for 2012 could be as much as $500 million."

Why was Aubrey Huff crying after the Giants’ victory?

2011-07-02T21:40:00.000-07:00

It was the highlight that sparked a big question on Friday night. Why was San Francisco Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff(notes) crying in the team's postgame handshake line? Especially since they had just defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4-3?

Since most of us saw the clip without any context (or without any sound in restaurants and bars), there were a lot of questions to be asked. Was he upset over the death of the clubhouse water cooler after Brian Wilson(notes) took a bat to it after a blown save? Was he remembering the .567 OPS he posted for the Tigers during an ill-fated playoff push in 2009? Or just simply missing his retired red rally thong?

Given Huff's reputation as a prankster, I thought he was probably just hamming it up and joking for the entertainment of his teammates. It's a theory supported by someone close to the team, San Jose Mercury News reporter Andrew Baggarly.

From the Mercury News:

"Several folks have asked me why Aubrey Huff appeared to be wiping away tears in the handshake line. Not sure, but Huff has this mock crying performance thing that he does often, usually when he's talking about his batting average. He'll start laughing and end up crying. He's a showman."

That's not to say Huff doesn't have a sentimental side. The Stew was there last November when he cried and cried after winning the World Series. But given that Friday's game was just another during the grind of a season it's probably safe to say he was just messing around.
