LEGO Monster Chess SetUsing 32 Lego mindstorms bricks, 100,000 Lego bricks and costing roughly $30,000. This is one amazing project!Check out the detail on the pieces, I love how the knight’s legs move as it travels the board.

The whole lot took a year to plan and build, led by 4 main people and helped by 23. Their site has more stats on how it was done and what it involved.

LEGO Balloon Car

Learning Fun 101 believes that learning begins at home and we want to encourage parents and children to build together.
This months building activity is a simple balloon powered car by Davis Creek Elementary (click the link and you’ll be redirected to a page with detailed instructions on how to build it).
It takes standard LEGO pieces and a balloon to make it go. Get the whole family in on this project, try different size wheels and axles and see which cars go faster.

Spring Break Fun Days
Children & parents are encourage to come for a fun filled day of LEGO building and Discovery! Our LEGO Robotics Fun days allow kids ages 4 – 104 to build and create different projects at any of the many LEGO Fun activity centers.

Fun event’s include some of the following activities:

Help build a giant LEGO mini figure!
Challenge yourself to be the last man standing in the LEGO Battle Tops or Bots Arena!
Dive into a swimming pool full of LEGO pieces for “Free Building”. It’s like a treasure hunt and that one special LEGO piece is your treasure. Build anything & everything – just for fun!
Create a unique spin art using our LEGO NXT spin art machine.
Play a fun LEGO game

This months LEGO Fun is animals, take a look at this realistic creation of a LEGO robotic duck (scale 1:1), which looks and behaves like a real duck. The White Duck is able to walk around by herself and lays eggs in her nest! But is she clever enough to keep them….?

Spring Break Workshops

Join us one day each week for 3 hours this summer your child can learn how to build a cool LEGO® Robot or Motorized LEGO® machine! Each workshop is especially themed with new models to choose from and allows your child to use their imagination and creativity while learning about basic science and engineering concepts.

Projects include:

Alligator, Lion, Drumming Monkey, Sail boat, Airplane, Soccer kicker and more for grades K – 2nd
Power Saw, Mini Sumo Bot, Ball Roller Coaster, Ball Kicker, Voice Command Car, Dragster, Catapult, Rattlesnake, Robot Arm and a Guitar for grades 3rd – 5th.

No prior Lego experience is required. Students will be taught everything they need to know during our workshop. Students will work in teams of two/three —friends are welcome to sign up together and can be partners.

Last month we brought you LEGO Science, an amazing project of a dissected frog made of LEGO’s.This month we wanted to focus on something a bit more edible, LEGO Food! The LEGO Donut looks good enough to eat… if you squint hard enough.

Did you know……
The first minifigures (or minifigs) were released in 1978 for the Town, Space, and Castle playsets. When they were first created, LEGO decided that their (always happy) faces should have only one color: yellow. Minifigs have no sex or race. Actually, they didn’t have any arms or movable legs either. In the 1980s, with the arrival of the LEGO Pirates, new facial features (evil/good/happy/grumpy) were released. In 2003, the company released different skin colors for the LEGO Basketball.

Texas Science and Engineering Festival

Building on the overwhelming success of the inaugural Austin Science and Engineering Festival in 2010, the 2nd annual festival, the Texas Science and Engineering Festival, will make science and engineering accessible, fun and inspirational for Texas’ youth and families. Come explore the wonders of science with FREE activities for the whole family featuring a wide variety of events including hands-on demonstrations, free giveaways, live entertainment and much more!

The Texas Science & Engineering Festival is hosted by the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, and is presented in conjunction with the USA Science & Engineering Festival. The Festival will be held on November 5 & 6, 2011 at the Austin Convention Center. The two-day EXPO will feature more than 100 fun and interactive activities to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Welcome to Learning Fun 101′s Newsletter!

Learning Fun 101 is excited to launch its first newsletter. This is something that we have wanted to do for a long time and our first issue is dedicated to connecting families in the Austin and surrounding areas to our website. Our goal and purpose is to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through hands on creative building and programming and connect you to a camp/class that will help your student with critical thinking and creative problem solving as they build LEGO robots, simple machines and LEGO projects.We plan to have a month building challenge at our Creation Station, a quick LEGO Lesson and a list of our current activities.We hope you had a great 4th of July and will enjoy our newsletter
