Frog Life Cycle, Word Search, & Other Fun Activities

Studying about frogs is lots of fun for preschool and elementary school children. The kids become so excited to learn about the stages of development for a frog. They become very interested in the frog's life cycle (egg, tadpole, froglet, and adult frog). This is a great lesson to teach metamorphosis.

Another fun activity is a frog crossword puzzle which can be used to introduce or review frog vocabulary.

Some of the 16 words included are amphibian, frog, froglet, herpetologist, metamorphosis, pond, river, tadpole, vertebrate, etc.

Butterfly Life Cycle & Anatomy Diagrams and Other Butterfly Activities for Spring

Spring is a great time to teach kids about butterflies because that’s when butterflies become most active and visible. Warmer weather and blooming flowers make it easier for children to observe the butterfly life cycle in real life.

Spring Butterflies in the Garden

Here are a few reasons spring works especially well:

Butterflies emerge in spring after winter, so kids can often see caterpillars, chrysalises, and adult butterflies outdoors.
Plants and flowers are growing, which helps explain how butterflies get food and why pollination matters.
The butterfly life cycle matches the season. Students can watch the stages from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis (pupa) to butterfly over several weeks.
Outdoor learning is easier in spring weather, making nature walks and garden activities more enjoyable.
Butterflies connect to science concepts like metamorphosis, habitats, insects, and ecosystems in a hands-on way.
Spring themes feel exciting and hopeful, which keeps young learners interested and curious.

Teachers and parents can also plant butterfly-friendly flowers or raise caterpillars in the classroom so children can observe the transformation up close.

Spring is a great time to teach kids about frogs because it’s when frogs are most active and their life cycle is easiest to observe.

Breeding season: Frogs lay eggs in ponds and wetlands in spring, so children can see clusters of eggs (frogspawn) and watch them develop into tadpoles and then young frogs.
Visible life cycle: The stages—egg, tadpole, froglet, adult—progress fairly quickly, giving a natural hands-on lesson in metamorphosis and growth.
Warmer, wetter weather: Frogs are cold-blooded and thrive in mild, damp conditions, making them easier to find and hear during nature walks.
Ecosystem lessons: Spring offers a chance to connect frog studies with bigger topics like habitats, water cycles, and the importance of wetlands for biodiversity.

Spring is a season when what kids learn in books vividly matches what they can observe outside.

Today I have a new, free Spring themed printable CVC game for you to use with your students.

CVC words are simple three-letter words that follow the pattern (consonant, vowel, consonant). Each word begins and ends with a consonant and has a short vowel in the middle. (Examples: dog, cat, bat, wet, red)

This game has 33 CVC words for your students to read. The game is lots of fun for children and will help them learn to read words on their own and grow their knowledge of simple words which will help grow their confidence in their reading skills.

Kindergarten Geometry is about teaching kids to recognize, name, describe, and work with basic shapes. They need to understand how these shapes relate to the world around them. It's very hands-on and visual.

Teaching 2D Shapes in kindergarten is foundational for early math learning. Children learn to recognize, describe, and name common 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon and oval). They also need to notice 2D shapes in everyday objects. The door is a rectangle. The clock is a circle. A pizza is a circle.

Children learn that shapes form the basis of objects that they see daily. This deepens their understanding of how math relates to their environment. They need to look for shapes everywhere including the classroom, their home, and their environment.

Using Venn Diagrams with Young Students

Do you use Venn Diagrams with your students?

Venn Diagrams are a type of graphic organizer that students can use to compare, contrast, sort, and classify. They are especially useful to use with reading comprehension, math reasoning and scientific observation.

Venn Diagram

Venn diagrams help students turn abstract ideas into concrete visual structure.

They support language development. They help students describe attributes and use comparative language (both, only, neither).

They are helpful in math (shapes, numbers, patterns, etc.) literacy (characters, settings, vocabulary, etc.), science (animals, materials, weather. etc.) social studies (communities, traditions, etc.)

A good way to introduce Venn Diagrams to very young students is to use real tangible objects (buttons, blocks, leaves, pencils, classroom supplies).

Next, students can draw pictures.

Start with simple categories (things that roll vs. things that stack).

Next, students can use written diagrams (fiction vs. nonfiction), (animals that fly vs. animals that swim), (animals that live on land vs animals that live in water).

After students have completed written diagrams, let them write sentences about what they learned. Let them read and share their sentences with a partner.

The more frequently students use Venn Diagrams in class, the more independently students will use them to organize their thinking.

Telling Time to the Half Hour Resources for Kids

Learning to tell time is important for children for many reasons. It builds independence and responsibility and helps children manage their own routines. It also strengthens other math skills such as counting by 5s and understanding fractions.

After students have become successful in learning to tell time to the hour then it would be a good time to introduce telling time to the half hour.

As with learning to tell time to the hour, it would be best to start learning about time to the half hour with concrete objects.

I would suggest gathering up all the clocks and watches, etc. that you can find in your environment and have your students touch and examine these concrete items and review what they already know about clocks and telling time.

Then review telling time to the hour before introducing time to the half hour.

Start with your concrete items to have students learn about time to the half hour. I like using teacher-made or student-made paper plates clocks to work with. Also many inexpensive paper clocks are available at your dollar stores.

After using the real clocks and paper products you can move on to other paper and pencil supplies.

Learning about blends is an important skill for students to master and will help students as they learn to sound out words.

Students need strong reading foundation skills in Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Today I have a new, free, printable, BLENDS GAME for you to use with your students in kindergarten or first grade. The game is engaging for students and will fit in well with your curriculum. This game features the L Blends. It includes bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl.

Digraphs are 2 letters of the alphabet that together make one single sound. Examples of consonant digraphs are ch, sh, th, wh, and ph.

Learning digraph sounds will help children's ability to read words.

Learning each digraph separately is recommended. Then, lessons involving multiple digraphs can be introduced.

Digraphs are usually taught in Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Telling Time is a very important topic to teach kids.

Here are a few resources to help you get started.

Learning to tell time can be difficult for some kids. That's why it's important for kids to have lots of practice and learn in a happy, fun environment.

It's important to start with concrete objects so I love to make paper plate clocks with the kids. You will find lots of examples of paper plate clocks on this blog.
