The successful development of open access publishing by organizations including the Public Library of Science (PLoS) in recent years is a dramatic illustration of how the Internet is revolutionizing scientific communication. Today, after several months of work, I’m delighted to announce that PLoS is launching PLoS Currents (Beta) — a new and experimental website for the rapid communication of research results and ideas. In response to the recent worldwide H1N1 influenza outbreak, the first PLoS Currents research theme is influenza.

PLoS Currents: Influenza, which we are launching today, is built on three key components: a small expert research community that PLoS is working with to run the website; Google Knol with new features that allow content to be gathered together in collections after being vetted by expert moderators; and a new, independent database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) called Rapid Research Notes, where research targeted for rapid communication, such as the content in PLoS Currents: Influenza will be freely and permanently accessible. To ensure that researchers are properly credited for their work, PLoS Currents content will also be given a unique identifier by the NCBI so that it is citable.

PLoS Currents: Influenza welcomes contributions covering any and all aspects of research into influenza: influenza virology, genetics, immunity, structural biology, genomics, epidemiology, modeling, evolution, policy and control. Contributions might take the form of new datasets, preliminary analyses or entire manuscripts. The launch site already features new findings from some outstanding influenza researchers.

To enable contributions to PLoS Currents: Influenza to be shared as rapidly as possible, they will not be subject to in-depth peer review; however, unsuitable submissions will be screened out by a board of expert moderators led by Eddie Holmes (Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, Pennsylvania State University) and Peter Palese (Department of Microbiology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine).

The key goal of PLoS Currents is to accelerate scientific discovery by allowing researchers to share their latest findings and ideas immediately with the world’s scientific and medical communities. Google Knol’s features for community interaction, comment and discussion will enable commentary and conversations to develop around these findings. Given that the contributions to PLoS Currents are not peer-reviewed in detail, however, the results and conclusions must be regarded as preliminary. In time, it is therefore likely that PLoS Currents contributors will submit their work for publication in a formal journal, and the PLoS Journals will welcome these submissions.

PLoS Currents: Influenza is an experiment and a prototype for further PLoS Currents sites. It reflects our commitment to using online tools to the fullest extent possible for the open sharing of research results. As with any new project, we will be listening carefully to the reactions within and beyond the scientific and medical communities and welcoming suggestions for improvements.

AMEX - Credit Card Fraud Alert

Now being one of the recent victims of American Express credit card Fraud alert and happen to see someone stealing my credit card details, I wanted to write a post that helps others in what it takes to fight against it.

To start with, AMEX cancelled my credit card and the 'security team' at the customer service did not give more details than the following
05/07/2009 BUY.COM $800

Armed with the above information, it looks like it is the credit card holder responsibility to hire a person to find the culprit(that is the response from AMEX).
One would imagine, there are tougher laws against this kind of crime and credit card companies would be on top of it to avoid this in future, apparently it is not so.

Getting of the phone with AMEX, i wanted to check online what are all the options.
FBI has extensive information on this issue.

ehow has an excellent article on how to report credit card fraud.

The next step is to call American Express again and identify the source of the transaction, possibly call Buy.com and ask for more details. Not sure where the credit card details where exposed, but this is a good start to see who did it and report on it.

Information is not safe online when it is on the wrong hands, the moral of the story!

2009 SQL Experience - BI Project @ Indianapolis

Glad i went to the SQL BI meet, here in this post I would like to give a quick review on how the day went!

Five Sessions:

1) "Gathering Requirements" by Perpetual Technologies Manager on "Requirements Discovery and Design".

2) Building database model by Ray Lucas from Perpetual Technologies (excellent presentation) on How to get the Conceptual, Logical & Physical model right in first place.How to build a data warehouse (Inmon and Kimball techniques), explanation on Cubes and Dimensions, etc. Also he did a quick demo walkthrough on how to build 'Invest In Me' application by applying the models to build a data model.

3) ETL by Arie Jones, mostly covering the SQL Server Integration Services and some tips and tricks. Showed demo of some of the common techniques to do ETL in the 'Invest in Me' application.

4) Juan did a presentation on SSAS, some of the concepts like UDM, MDX, Tuples, Measures, Cubes, Dimensions and Attribute relationship (Speaker insisted the concept of establishing this as a must for SQL Server Analysis Services) was explained in-depth. But he did not have time to complete the whole presentation! It looks like there is a lot to learn in the SSAS space.

5) SSRS presentation by Arie Jones. Explained the tips and tricks to do Dashboard and some neat little tricks to use web services to do custom implementation of reports.Showed how to do some cool charting using new SSRS 2008 Gauge controls. If you are using SSRS 2005 then you are better of to buy the Dundas controls and use it.

The food was excellent, sponsors did keep the participants engaged by giving away prizes lot of SQL books and T-Shirts.

Thanks to Perptech for giving an opportunity to learn some good SQL stuff.

Uninstall all the beta versions of Silverlight, preview versions of Blend before installing the latest version of Silverlight & Blend in the developer environments!

Side note:
Chrome Official Build 2200 is still having issues with the Silverlight. Get the Chrome developer version!

Expression Blend 2 SP1 is out too!

Read the overview and also the release notes before installing!

I hope ComponentOne (Version M5 +) and other silverlight tool makers will be releasing the Silverlight 2.0 RTW based components soon.
