The Two Maos
These are small figurines, but it is difficult to tell the scale in the picture (which I like) except that you can see my reflection in the window. This store was covered in little Maos, but the sitting together like this cracked me up.

Groningen Street at Dusk

Traffic Light
I suppose this shot is cliché, but I like it. I stood there like an idiot through three cycles of the light before I grabbed this one of the yellow light which contrasted against the dusk sky well.

Lights in a Canal
It seems pretty common to light the under-side of bridges in Holland. I particularly like the effect that the arches make, completing a circle with their reflections.

Fixing Up
This guy and a woman I presumed to be his wife were fixing up the inside of a shop in Groningen. It was amazing how many shops were being painted and fixed up... A lot of turnover I guess. This shot is an example of why I like the 18-200 for wandering around cities. I framed him from across the street, but with a shorter lens he probably would have noticed me, looked up, and ruined the photo.

MBTA Coin
An old T coin... I have since taken a much better picture, but I will leave this one up (and who wants two T coin pictures anyway?) as an example of just how hard macro photography actually is. I took this on my fancy-pants new tripod with a strobe and my very bright desk lamp yet still it is blurry. It makes me wonder how bug photographers do it--infinite patience? Catching the bugs early while their still cold?

Veil
I cropped this one way down so that you would be able to notice the face in the veil, which is very subtle among all the business on her costume, the lights, and the tree. That and the fact that I was basically taking this picture in the dark with limitations on where I could bounce the flash because of the crowd of people behind me is why it is so noisy.

Lucy
This is Lucy who is also pictured here. I learned that it is very hard to take good portraits of dogs. They notice the pre-flash and react to it while the shutter is open. In this picture I bounced the flash so that it just fell on to her nose--the rest is in shadow because she is under a table. I had taken so many pictures in a row that she had just given up being interested in the camera for this one.

Cactus Skin
This macro has the classic black background due to the use of a flash very, very close to the subject. I'm not sure how I feel about it--generally I prefer fuzzy colors--but I dig the texture of the plant anyway.

Bent Tree
This is from a small cemetery near where I used to live in Ashland Oregon. Most of the pictures from this side of the cemetery had that nice white->green->white->blue transition from bottom to top. This one was my favorite though.

Sunny Hill
One of my favorite pictures is of a little tree with a big sun behind it that I shot with a PAS out the window of a rental car. This picture was, which I also like very much, reminds me of that other one. And this one was taken from a moving car on the freeway (I-5 South between first and second Ashland exits to be exact) believe it or not.

Carcass
I wanted to get a very sharp, noiseless picture of this carcass, but like an idiot shot it at f/3. Since I shooting hand-held I apparently didn't get the plane of focus lined up with the plane of the deck and the head is out of focus... However, I really like the effect and now think that the picture would have been ruined if the entire thing was in focus.

Ice Bloom
I didn't take a tripod because we were doing the carry-on-only thing this trip in anticipation of the generally crappiness of domestic flying during Xmas... This was the one picture that I really regret not having that tripod. This is shot at f/7.1 which was the smallest aperture I could handle with no flash or tripod (hunched over a tiny plant with big gloves on).

Oaks
There were actually clouds, but I let them blow out in order to retain a bit of texture on the tree in the foreground. I took another version where the tree was completely black, but clouds were visible, and I didn't like it as much.
