See to it that the violin can rest comfortably under your left chin and over your left shoulder. If not, purchase a chin rest, which is one of the more essential violin accessories.

You should also consider purchasing a shoulder rest so that the violin can be fully supported. It is important that you gate a shoulder rest that is adjustable so that it can fit your shoulder perfectly. This way, you can focus more on fiddling and fingering without having to worry too much on carrying the violin.

If one is uncomfortable with the violin, the tendency is for him to slouch forward to keep a hold of the violin, thus affecting the way the violin is played. The sound of the musical instrument can also be affected. That is why it is important to feel comfortable with the violin. The way you hold it can really affect the music that you are playing.

As early as your student violin years, make sure that you keep in mind these pointers in learning violin. After all, it is your own personal instrument, so make yourself connect with it both physically and mentally and learn to play the best music with constant effort and practice.

Before one gets started on the violin, the first thing to do is to invest in a good set. Set aside a couple of hundreds to buy a suitable starter set which does not need to be upgraded after only a few months to 2-3 years. This will allow you to mature as a player and discover if the instrument is indeed what you passionately love. Most would go for Suzuki violins since they are the standard bearer of decent quality in the industry. But there are just as many other types which provide sufficient value for money.

Remember to get other accessories such as extra strings, resin, a good and strong violin case, bow, and other neccessities. These will come in handy especially at the start as bad habits are changed and some of them, like strings, might require constant change till one learns how to take care of the equipment well.

Next, decide on whether you prefer to be guided all the way by a personal teacher, or be self taught. A word of caution for those who opt for the latter – the road will be long and rough, and you will still require some guidance from time to time. This may come in the form of a teacher too, or a friend who is also learning the instrument but at a more advanced stage, or simply learning resources such as scores, theory lessons, online guides, violin dvds, and more. The smart student will basically combine whatever he has available and make the best use of everything.

If you intend to sign up for a violin course with a music school or personal tutor, the progress will be faster. But there are other disadvantages in that you will have to take exams and there are strict rules that many teachers like to enforce, which can often dampen a beginner’s spirit for learning. But both methods will provide plenty of violin lessons for beginners which will be helpful, especially from the start where even trying to master the chin rest would be a huge challenge for many.

Sound sample of a fine French violin circa 1920s. The piece is commonly known as the Albinoni Adagio in g minor…popularized in the Mel Gibson’s Australian war movie, Gallipoli. Its often compared to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings because it has become widely used in movies and television whenever a sad, contemplative mood requires musical backing. However, there’s a bit of a controversy…here’s some info from the internet:

The Adagio in G minor for strings and organ continuo is a neo-baroque composition by Remo Giazotto first published in 1958. It is usually referred to as “Albinoni’s Adagio”, or “Adagio in G minor by Albinoni, arranged by Giazotto”, but it has been established as an entirely original work by Giazotto.[1]
It was supposedly based on a fragment of a second-movement continuo from a “Sonata in G minor” by Tomaso Albinoni purportedly found among the ruins of the old Saxon State Library, Dresden, after it was firebombed by the Allies during World War II, but since Giazotto’s death in 1998 it has emerged that the piece is all his composition, as no such fragment has been found or recorded to have been in possession by the Saxon State Library.
The piece is most commonly orchestrated for string ensemble and organ, or string ensemble alone, but has achieved a level of fame such that it is commonly transcribed for other instruments. The piece has also permeated popular culture, having been used as background music for such films as Gallipoli, television programmes and in advertisements to the point of becoming a cliché for self-consciously “sad” moments

I’m looking for an electric violin. Sorry its so late for answers but i need it before Christmas. What do you recommend and why? I’m only paying 300$ and under.

You cannot get much of a violin for $300, electric or not. I suggest putting your money on a violin from a reputable local dealer. Always try a student instrument before you buy. Then get a clip-on electric microphone if you want to electrify it.

‘i’m a grade 5 violin student but still find changing positions difficult. Any tips ?

I have an assortment of practice books to help but still find sight reading a pain when it comes to position changing.

You need to practice each position 1 at a time. practice 3rd position til you know it well , then practice changing from 1st to 3rd and back. then work on another position and do the same til you know them all.

Whats more difficult learning A piano or a Violin?

Ive been playing the piano for about year and had greatly improve my fingering exercise, and learning more about different keys, i took class for it but i self taught myself the year after the class.

even though im trying to sell mastering the piano, How hard is to learn a violin and how does it works?

I play piano and find it easy, but expect that violin is harder, with all the extra work the left hand has to do on the strings. It would take lots of practice to get the fingers correctly positioned quickly to play exactly the pitch you want, instead of caterwauling with the pitch slightly out. At least, when you play the correct note on piano, you get the sound you expect.

I am trying to find the best violin under 200. i looked on ebay for used but don’t know good or bad brands. where can i buy used violins online?

I played the violin in school and I did a rent-to-own through a local music store. They offer payment plans this way so you can pay a little bit at a time each month while still being able to use it while you pay and then it’s yours when you make your final payment. Also, I would check the classifieds or even check with a music instructor at local schools, as they may now the cheapest and best value for you. My violin is a Scherl & Roth and it has lasted me for over 10 years. I would highly suggest getting a full size violin instead of a half-size. I’m not sure how old you are but if you are still growing, you will eventually want the full size. E-mail me if there’s anything else you need.
