- Contributions from some 80 scholars including Judith H. Anderson, Patrick Collinson, Alison Findlay, Germaine Greer, Malcolm Jones, Arthur Kinney, James Knowles, Arthur Marotti, Robert Miola and Greg Walker

- Features essays discussing material culture, sectarian writing, the history of the body, theatre both in and outside the playhouses, law, gardens, and ecology in early modern England

- Orientates the beginning student, while providing advanced students and faculty with new directions for their research

- All of the essays from the first edition, along with the recommendations for further reading, have been reworked or updated

This edition is designed as a reference tool to aid scholars and students in their study of the poem. The introduction and commentary deal with points of language appropriate to the specialist or student of Greek, but also with matters of literary interpretation of interest to the non-specialist reader.

It is intended to inform its readers, but also, importantly, to inspire them, and to enable them to pursue their own research by introducing the primary resources and exploring the latest agenda for their study. The emphasis is on the breadth and potential of Hellenic Studies as a flourishing and exciting intellectual arena, and also upon its relevance to the way we think about ourselves today.

For every student, a time eventually comes when basic grammar is no longer the problem. You can say a few words about the weather, or the fact that, yes, you are feeling hungry, or explain that you are going out for the day - and actually be understood. Beyond that, however, the going gets tough. You cannot make pertinent comments about philosophy, politics, art, science, law, or business - simply because you lack the necessary vocabulary. In fact, you may not be able to say that you are interested in "philosophy" at all, because you don't know the Japanese word for it. How do you go about acquiring this specialized vocabulary (most of which consists of kanji compounds)? Usually by spending hundreds of hours reading Japanese books or picking through a dictionary.

This book is an attempt to shorten that process by collecting a good number of the more commonly used key words from crucial areas of human endeavor. Now, without spending years mastering the written language, you can occasionally come up with the right word at the right moment in a conversation that is striving toward comprehensibility. This can even be done by students who do not have a strong grasp of kanji, for they can learn the words as sounds.

The process is compared to that of learning a written majority language, such as French. In either case, the argument is made that adults, having certain advantages over children, can indeed learn to speak a second language well; a lot of listening should precede a lot of practice speaking, albeit imperfectly. Also, language learning should be inseparably linked to culture learning in order to achieve fused language-culture proficiency, for the ultimate purpose of building relationships and impacting the world.

Activities such as indentifying attributes, making personal connections, and completing graphic organizers give students multiple exposures to the words, helping them develop the vocabulary they need to be successful on assessments and in the classroom.

Research shows that strong vocabulary and word knowledge is directly linked to academic accomplishment. Make surestudents develop the rich vocabulary that's essential to successful reading comprehension and academic achievement with A Word a Day. Each book in this newly revised series covers 144 words in 36 engaging weekly units. And with new features, such as an oral review and a written assessment for each week, it's easier than ever to help students develop the vocabulary they need.

A Word a Day

- contains 144 daily lessons that easily integrate into any classroom. The structured 10 to 15-minute activities introduce words in a flexible format that can be used for morning warm-ups or to keep students engaged during transition times.

- includes new additions that help reinforce vocabulary. New weekly oral reviews and written assessments ask students to apply their new words through group discussions, questions in test format, and an open-ended writing prompt.

- uses multiple approaches to teach vocabulary. Oral activities provide multiple opportunities to develop word meaning indentifying features that are and are not attributes of the words, making personal connections to the words, and using the words in context while completing several types of exercises. By using and thinking about words in multiple ways, students build a deeper understanding of word meaning that goes beyond surface-level memorization.

- serves as a valuable test-prep tool. Vocabulary development enhances critical thinking, promotes comprehension of new concepts, and is the most important factor in reading comprehension, all of which are skills students need to perform successfully on assessments.

- is correlated to state standards.
