Today I’m going to show you a Blues Guitar lick in the style of Eric Clapton, that can be used over the turnaround section of a 12 bar blues in the key of B.

This lick is similar to one Eric played on “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” from Live at the Fillmore. Eric uses some really cool bends and phrases that I’m sure he got from BB and Freddie King. His choice of notes is always tasty and full of emotion.

Check out this Blues Guitar Lesson now.

His renditions of “Have You Ever Loved a Woman” are simply amazing! They are all a little different and you can learn a lot from each version. In particular the EC Was Here version is really cool.

What’s your favorite Eric Clapton Blues? Let me know right below. I’d love to hear your opinion.

A Facebook Fan of Learning Guitar Now had suggested that one, which I had never heard before. Needless to say it’s awesome!

I have produced a 5 DVD Blues Guitar Course that will show you how to start playing and creating your own blues guitar sound. These DVDs cover scales, vibrato, improvisation, chords, intervals, solos, turnarounds, licks and much more. Check it out now.

Well recently I found a great deal on a 1966 Fender Blackface Vibrolux amp. This amp is known to be great for playing gigs, due to the wattage and amount of clean headroom you can get as well as the natural overdrive that can be obtained.

I’ve had the amp for a little over a month now and have played a couple of gigs with it playing multiple styles of music. All I can say is wow! I’ve played Marvin Gaye, Van Morrison, ZZ Top, Prince, Aretha Franklin, and many more styles using this amp and it can handle everything.

I’m simply amazed at how good this amp sounds. You can get that Derek Trucks tone, SRV, John Mayer, BB King, and a thick ZZ Top or Dickey Betts Sound.

The video below shows me playing a blues using the neck pickup of a Gibson ES 335. I’m going for a more BB King tone here using only the guitar and amp. The amp has celestion 25 watt replacement speakers but I don’t know what kind they are. I’m also using Groove Tubes in the power section.

Check out the amp sound in this video

So now that you’ve heard the amp, what do you think? Does it sound bad to you, or do you like. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

In this weeks podcast, I’m going to break down a slide guitar lick used by Derek Trucks in the song “Key to the Highway” from the Songlines DVD.

The solo he plays in this song is nothing short of brilliant. Derek effectively manages to blend the Major, Minor, and Blues Scales together to form a very melodic vocal-esque slide guitar solo.

Notice the use of dynamics, phrasing, space, and melody in this solo. Only a true blues man posesses the power of restraint during a solo.

You’ll notice he’ll leave quite a bit of space between the phrases at the beginning points of the solo. Anyway, in this podcast I show you the intro lick used in this solo in open e tuning.

This legendary guitar has been played by everyone from Slash, Jimmy Page, and Gary Moore, to Warren Haynes, Joe Bonamassa, and Eric Clapton. It is the sound of rock, and has been replicated by many, but never duplicated.

Today, Thursday August 14th Les Paul the inventor of the solid body electric guitar, has died from complications from Pneumonia at the age of 94.

Les Paul invented multitrack recording and made huge advancements in the way we record music. If it weren’t for Les Paul, we would have no Pro Tools I can tell you that.

The husband and wife team of Les Paul (guitarist, born Lester William Polsfuss in 1915) and Mary Ford (vocalist, born Iris Colleen Summers in 1924, died in 1977) recorded 16 Top Ten hits between 1950-1954.
Mary Ford (aka Iris Colleen Hatfield) (July 7, 1924, El Monte, California, – September 30, 1977, Arcadia, California), vocalist and guitarist, was one-half of the famed husband-wife musical team, Les Paul and Mary Ford. Between 1950 and 1954, the couple had 16 top-ten hits. In 1951 alone, the duo sold six million records.

Les Paul was considered a guitar virtuoso back in the 50’s and influenced a whole generation of guitar players. If you haven’t seen the documentary, Les Paul Chasing Sound, you really need to check it out. It is a look into one of the greatest musical, and innovative minds ever put on this earth.

Why am I telling you this? I’ll come back to it in a minute.

I know you probably just want to know the 3 reasons why you’re not getting better, then you’ll just start doing them and everything will be perfect.

I hate to burst your bubble but it just doesn’t work like that.

Zig Ziglar said “Aim at nothing and you will hit it every time”.

One of my favorite quotes and speakers of all time. This is also true of slide guitar playing.

What are you aiming for? Have you written it down? Are you working towards it?

If you can’t answer these questions, then you’re guilty of reason #1. You don’t set goals.

It is statistically proven that people who set goals are more successful than people who don’t. So let me ask you, “Why aren’t you setting goals with your playing?”

The number 2 reason your slide guitar playing never gets better is because you don’t track your progress. This is very easy to fix.

You need to record yourself playing and listen back to figure out what you need to work on. If you don’t think you need to do this, you are very mistaken.

I was in the studio today recording a track for someone and after the first take I listened back and thought, man that SUCKS! I clearly was not trying hard enough. Anyway, when you record yourself, you’ll hear how bad your vibrato is, or how off your pitch is.

This is a good thing. If you know where you are weak, then you can take action to practice that area in your playing that needs work. This is pure gold if you know this!

The 3rd reason you never get better is because you are not taking the time to just sit down and play from the heart, without thinking about if you’re doing it right, or if you’re playing the right scale, or if your tone is what it should be.

I don’t care what anyone says, if you don’t sit down every once and a while and play purely to create a magical moment and transcend your hands to the instrument, then you don’t get music. Period.

I am guilty of this as well.

When I recorded that track earlier today, I thought to myself, “forget about trying to impress, play the vibe, get the feel, and try Hittin’ the Note” as Duane would say.

After getting into the right frame of mind I totally got into the track and sounded relaxed, calm, and sure of the notes I was playing.

Back to good ol’ Edison. Apparently he failed tons of times and eventually he got it right. You need to do this with your slide guitar playing as well. If you’re not failing at something, then you’ll never get any better, because you’re not trying to go beyond what you already know.

Have you failed today?

If you’re serious about learning slide guitar I’ve developed a course on how to do this. No it’s not a magic formula to instant Duane Allman, but if you practice what’s in these slide guitar lessons, you’ll learn how to play.

So start recording yourself and see what you hear. You may find out some things you didn’t realize.

If you play slide guitar in open e tuning, then there is no doubt that you would like to play rhythm guitar as well.

As a guitarist in a band, you will not just be soloing all the time. To be an effective band member, you will need to learn how to play rhythm guitar. In this slide guitar lesson, I’ll show you an alternative chord to the basic straight across pattern everyone plays in open e tuning.

This is one area I cover in my DVD, Slow Blues Slide Guitar: The Expert Series Vol 1. In this DVD I will show you how to effectively improvise your chord playing in open e tuning by learning chord formations that are used in the blues. This will contain major, minor, minor 7th, dominant 7th, and 9th chords.

So if you’re playing a standard blues in the key of G, then there is no doubt you will probably play this chord as your G chord.

A more bluesy chord would look like this:

It’s really all about knowing what patterns lie closely together so you can switch smoothly between chords without having to jump all over the fretboard.

Another example would be how to play a C chord in open e tuning. This chord form is highly useful when playing blues in open e tuning.

When you start learning useful shapes, and begin to experiment how to put them together within the context of a blues, you can pretty much play anything in open e tuning.

In my DVD, Slow Blues Slide Guitar: The Expert Series Vol 1. I will show you how to play many different chord formations over a slow blues.
