Another similar pattern you can use is “how long”. Again, you can use it to highlight a benefit. For instance, you can ask, “How long do you want to enjoy benefit Y for?”

Again, as you learn hypnotism and become more confident in using presuppositions, you can add an embedded command into the question. You can ask, ” How long do you want to enjoy benefit Y for, after having done X?”

You can use rhetorical questions to present the benefits the person will get from doing what you want and the action itself. The best thing about this mind reading technique is that it allows you to present the benefit as something that the person desires strongly.

Here is one example of how to use this technique in hypnotism. You can say, “Are you wondering how you can become rich by starting a multi level marketing business?”

Notice how you automatically create an interest in the person and provide for telling him more about the thing you want him to do and the benefits he will get. Just make sure you present the benefits well using techniques such as chunking.

The cause and effect patterns are really effective for mind reading and for making hypnotism more powerful. The “this means that” pattern is particularly effective for reading mind.

You can readily say to the person, “You talking to me means that you are ready to accept my suggestions.” Of course, you can be more specific and refer to an actual benefit by saying, “You talking to me means that you are ready to start your own business and make lots of money.” Use such patterns as much as you can.

As you certainly know, the connection between the hypnotist and the subject is essential. The connection between the subject and other people is important as well.

It is natural for us to follow the lead of others. Our mind tells us that if someone we respect and recognize as a leader does something, then we must follow his lead. This is a strong belief that is embedded into the subconscious mind from early childhood when we learn from our parents.

You can use the leadership position of another person or yours, when you use covert hypnosis to influence the person more effectively.

It is always best for you to be in a leadership position not only throughout the hypnotic process, but in general. Alpha males and females in society are natural leaders who everyone follows. You can readily get to have such a position with some extra work and more effective use of covert hypnosis.

When you are the leader the person has to follow, all you have to do is to suggestion. You can readily say, “By doing X just like I did, you can become more confident and successful just like I am.” Notice how this pattern creates powerful visualization as well.

The really great thing is that even if you are not a leader, you can readily get the person to follow the lead of someone else. You can readily use expert names and even movie character names to influence the person.

For instance, you can readily use something like, “Did what character A did, get some confidence and fight for your girl.” Notice how you get the person’s imagination to work while making a hypnotic suggestion.

This is applicable to pacing and leading as well.

One of the best ways to use pacing and leading is to show complex equivalence. Basically, you have to pace and lead so that the person believes that the thing you want him to do is the next logical action in a sequence. It is best to use past pacing in this case. Here is a simple example of how this technique can work in conversational hypnosis. You can say to your kid, “You have played outdoors. You have had lunch. Now it is time to rest.”

Let’s say that you are a salesperson selling a product to a prospect. You can say, “You have already discovered all the benefits of the product. You have realized that your investment in it will pay off. Now you can readily buy the product and benefit from it.”

You can use pacing and leading to identify a problem and to offer the solution, which is, of course, the thing you want the person to do. This is a really effective approach to use in conversational hypnosis.

Firstly, it allows you to get the person into trance and then present to him the thing you want him to do. Additionally, you support your reasoning by presenting a problem so you will not get objections straight away.

Using the sales example, you can readily pace and lead by saying, “I know you are concerned about the energy saving. I know you have problems lowering your energy costs. I also know that wall insulation is the best method for energy saving and lowering energy costs.”

From then on, you can readily talk about the benefits of wall insulation.

For instance you can say, “You have already made the first step by doing X. You have already felt what it is like to be successful. Now it’s time for you to do Y to make the achievement you have always wanted.”

This is just an example of how to use pacing and leading, but it illustrates how you can use past events to paste and how you can use the person’s emotions and beliefs to make the persuasion more powerful.

You can readily make pacing more elaborate so that you get the person into a deeper trance and give him a full understanding of the benefits he will get from doing what you want.

What is the key to success in conversational hypnosis? Some may say it is all about using more and more diverse techniques. Others strongly believe that it is all about the amount of practice you have.

Each of these factors is important, but language seems to be the primary factor that will always affect your performance. As long as you know how to use the right language forms, you will have a higher chance of successfully persuading anyone to do what you want.

Use the following tips to improve your use of language forms during conversational hypnosis.

Don’t use negatives.

You will automatically create negative emotions and confusion if you do this. Instead of saying, “By doing this, you will not have any work on Friday”, you can say, “By doing this, you will have time to do everything you want on Friday including enjoying relaxation.”

Enlarge the set of adjectives you use during conversational hypnosis.

When you describe the benefits the person will get from doing what you want, you should not use only widely used adjectives like “happy”, “successful” and “relaxed”.

The more descriptive your benefit presentation is the better you will influence the person. Look at various language sources for expanding your vocabulary.

Use shift words for making presuppositions.

Presuppositions are all about augmenting time and space. You can use them effectively with words and phrases shifting time and space. These include “after”, “before”, “by”, “along with”, “beside” and “while” and many more.

Ask open ended questions during the hypnotic process.

Asking questions will not break the trance state. Quite the opposite the person will come up with the right answers and ideas in his mind. The important thing is to devise questions that require complete answers and not just “yes” and “no” answers.

Unlike traditional hypnosis, covert hypnosis is much more flexible and allows for a lot of different conversational techniques and patterns to be used. Yes questions are among the easiest and most effective tools to use when you hypnotize people to do what you want.

These questions are based on the so called conversational postulates. We have developed a response to certain questions that actually involves an action rather than a reply.

For instance, when the phone is ringing and someone asks you, “Can you get that?” you usually do not give a reply, but just pick up the phone.

This example illustrates how powerful such questions are for influencing people to do what you want. You just need to learn how to use them in covert hypnosis.

The best technique that you can adopt to create yes questions is to base them on immediate experiences. For instance, when you have just explained the benefits the person will get from doing what you want, you can say, “Can you see how these benefits will help you in your life when you do X?”

Since the person has already done this, he will most certainly reply, “yes”. If you want to make the question more powerful, you can replace “see” with another powerful word that reflects the person’s most used representation system.

You should not worry about such a question breaking the trance state the person is during the covert hypnosis process. Since it is related to an immediate experience, the person will answer it, even if he does not say the reply out loud.

It is a good idea for you to be creative and to come up with different examples of yes questions so that you practice their use.

Often, novice practitioners, in particular, tend to focus primarily on highlighting the benefits the person will get and put less focus on making the hypnotic suggestion powerful.

This is certainly a hypnotism mistake that should be avoided. The reality is that you have plenty of opportunities to make the hypnotic suggestion while the person is in trance. There are also many different ways in which you can actually make it.

It is best for you to pace and lead after building rapport so that you can get the person into trance and mention the hypnotic suggestion straight away. Then you can describe the benefits the person will get from doing what you want, starting with a trance word, like imagine.

You can readily embed the command you want to make as often as you deem fit. You can use it in rhetorical questions, such as “How will doing X make you feel?” Then you can explain the emotion the person will enjoy during and/or after doing what you want.

You should not worry even if the suggestion is a bit shocking and difficult for the person to accept. After all, the idea of hypnotism is to present it just as suggestion. You should not use straightforward embedded commands. Make use of words like “should” and “would”.

You do not have to use present tense to make an embedded command, when applying covert hypnotism. You can use present continuous, present perfect and future tense.

It is essential for you to keep your voice calm and flat, when making the embedded command. Make sure you do not change the intonation.

Knowing the main techniques is a must, but you need to work on improving them as well.

1) Present the emotional benefits.

You have to tell people how they will feel after doing the thing you want them to do. The use of adjectives is really important when you are presenting the benefits, so you should look for ones that present powerful emotions.

You can say something like, “By doing X, you will be more content and happier.” Similarly, you can use a question with presupposition and ask, “How much happier will doing X make you feel?”

You can also tie the action to the emotional benefit using a rhetorical question like, “How will doing X make you feel happy?” In this way, you will be able to explain your point in depth when you hypnotize.

2) Reframe possible objections during the trance stage.

You should not let the people you hypnotize make objections out loud. These objections will first occur in their mind and this is where you have to counter them.

Think of all possible objections in advance and find a way in which to counter them without mentioning them directly. For instance, if a possible objection is, “I’m tired”, you can readily say, “Doing X will make you feel relaxed”, during the trance stage.

If you have ready reframes, you will be able to counter objections automatically without disrupting the hypnotic process. In case any unexpected objections are placed, you need to use an agreement pattern to counter them effectively.

Your attitude and mindset as a hypnotist are equally important for success.

The first thing you need to do is to accept the fact that during the process of hypnosis, you will be completely in charge of your person’s emotions, thoughts and actions. If he is not willing to do something, then you are using an ineffective approach and you have to change it.

Learning how to focus completely on the person you are hypnotizing is essential for effective influencing. It is not about you. It is all about the prospect. You are the invisible hand that dictates him what to do.

You cannot have any reactions to what the person says. It is easy to focus your critical mind on the task, but this is not the case with the subconscious mind. You need to adopt the iron man pattern in order to be able to apply hypnosis effectively.

Visualize how every suggestion the other person makes bounces from you. This will help you protect yourself from the other person’s influence and stay fully focused on your hypnotic task.

Confidence plays an important role in the use of hypnosis for persuasion. You have to be absolutely confident in your skills as a hypnotist.

Practice in advance by preparing examples of different patterns, but do not prepare a script to use in advance. Have a plan for hypnotizing the person, but be prepared to be flexible.

Keep in mind that you have to take things slowly. Take your time to come up with the most persuasive pattern while keeping a seemingly casual conversation.

Last, but not least, remember that the person can catch you in trying to persuade him to do something, but he cannot suspect that you are using covert hypnosis in any way.

Comparative deletions are extremely useful, when you learn hypnotism and practice it. These are comparative statements that do not contain a precise comparison.

One simple example is “X is better.” You can see how the statement is not complete. We are making a comparison, but we are not saying what we compare X to.

Such patterns are widely used in hypnotism for overcoming objections in the person’s mind. Since you cannot know what other alternatives he considers, you can readily use comparative deletion to show that the thing you want the person to do is not only a good option, but a better one.

You can use comparative deletions with quantifiers to provide social proof. When you learn hypnotism, you will understand the importance of the collective mind and how it affects our choices. At this point, you need to know how to use this specific technique.

This technique is used when the person you are hypnotizing actually makes an objection. Then you can readily say, “Most people, who are in the same position/situation as you, react in the same way, but they eventually do exactly this thing to get benefits X, Y and Z.”

Notice how you are comparing the person with people like him without mentioning any names or a specific number of people. You are giving a social proof without making a false statement. In turn, the person is more likely to accept your influence and do what you want.

The more details you know and use the more effectively you will hypnotize him. Knowing the values of the person is beneficial, but knowing their hierarchy will guarantee you success in persuasion.

Why is the hierarch of values important? We use it to prioritize. No one can do absolutely everything that he wants or has to. That is why people make choices. You need to learn how to exploit this as you learn hypnosis

Your task as a hypnotist is to persuade the person to make the right choice (the thing you want him to do) bases on his hierarch of values. All you have to do is connect the thing you want the person to do with one of his most important values.

If you want your persuasion to be even more powerful, you can readily compare the different values of the person, as part of the hypnotic process.

The next logical question to ask is how to find the information you need to apply this technique. You have to use all methods that you learn as you learn hypnosis.

You can readily ask the person about the most important things in his life. What does he value? What does he value the most?

You should definitely ask more specific questions related to the thing you want the person to do.

If you want to make the person do you a favor, you can readily ask him, “Which is more important to you – having friends that are ready to help you just like you help them or focusing entirely on your work/career/individual well-being?”

Once you have the information, you can apply the techniques I described above.

. Since the reaction is automatic, the person does not really think things through. Does this mean that there is no point in using facts?

There is not a definite answer to this question. The use of facts for the purposes of pacing and leading is essential. However, when you are giving a person just facts about the thing you want him to do, you will certainly be unable to influence his subconscious mind.

The next logical question is how to find the right balance. This is not particularly difficult to do, provided that you understand the fundamentals of covert hypnosis.

The simple rule of thumb that you can follow is to relate all facts to the features of the person’s subconscious mind and, namely, his values, beliefs, desires and emotions. This is the only way in which you can make facts relevant and important for the person.

Just think about the most obvious example of using facts in covert hypnosis – pacing. You usually use immediate pacing, describing what the person is doing right now, or past pacing, which describes the things the person has already done. In both cases, the facts are all about him.

You can readily follow the rule of thumb when using quantifiers. Just figure out how the person identifies himself. You can use his profession and/or social status as well. In this way, you can come up with effective quantifiers like, “all successful managers” and “every loving parent”.

These are particularly useful for hypnotizing because they appeal to the person’s identity and touch upon his values, beliefs, emotions and desires.

However, body language can be much more useful than this. It can actually give you hints on how to hypnotize the person.

Psychologists have discovered that we actually reveal our inner thoughts with our posture, gestures and facial expressions. It is not uncommon for people to say one thing and to think another. In such cases, their body language can tell you the truth.

How is this useful in hypnotism? By reading the body language of the person, you will be able to choose the right techniques for getting the person into trance and influencing him.

What you need is careful observation, before you can actually apply hypnotism. You also need to figure out what the different gestures and facial expressions mean. Some of them are quite obvious because they are common in communication. Others are subtler and more difficult to understand.

For instance, people tend to be active with either the right or left part of their body when they agree. They are active with the other when they disagree. You can use this in hypnotism to reframe objections.

You can readily tell when someone is not listening to you and instead he is having an inner conversation with himself. In such cases, people tend to turn their head on the lean it towards their shoulder. It resembles the posture we have when we talk on the phone.

You can consider the state of mind the person is in to choose the right trance phrase. When he is talking to himself, you can use “see yourself”, “tell yourself” and “say to yourself”.
