Leather dining chairs can lend a real air of elegance to a dining room. However, people sometimes have difficulty with these chairs. Over a long period of time, a leather chair can deteriorate and become worn and torn. It is also the case that choosing a style of chair can be very difficult no matter in what context it will be used. There are a great many different designs of chair on the market, and this can be both a positive and a negative. Sometimes, too much choice is almost as bad as too little. In this article, we will discuss this furniture in more detail, both in terms of buying it in the first place and in terms of maintaining those items you already own.

Buying Furniture

Firstly, it is worth considering the material. Leather is certainly not the only option. Many people find that some other materials such as synthetic fabrics and the like can offer extremely good value for money and possibly a somewhat more modern aesthetic. For the sake of argument, however, let us suppose that you prefer leather. Even once you have decided on the material, there are still a great many variations in color and style. Dining chairs obviously tend to be upright and less luxurious than some living room chairs, but they can still vary between modern styles and more classic designs. The color is an obvious point of contention, also. Cream or white colors can certainly add an air of modern luxury and will fit very well with contemporary interior decor. The downside is that these colors tend to pick up stains far more easily, which brings us on to the topic of maintaining the appearance of leather dining chairs.

Maintenance

Leather dining chairs are invariably exposed to a range of contaminants at the dinner table. Foods, sauces and drinks inevitably find their way into the expensive material. Thankfully, leather is more stain-resistant than is often appreciated. Usually, a solid scrub with a dry cloth will remove just about anything. For matters that are more serious, a small amount of rubbing alcohol will help. Avoid using soap and water, as leather can become damaged this way. For furniture that has been damaged, perhaps by bursting at the seams, be aware that it may not be necessary to replace the entire leather chair. Quite often, it is possible to replace only the outer covering of the seat and still have excellent results and a like-new chair.

Summary

Leather dining chairs are a great choice among all of the different fabrics out there. Not only do these chairs come in a wide variety of different styles and colors, but they resist stains very well also. This is especially useful at the dining table, where stains are almost inevitable with most other kinds of furniture. You can find great deals on all types of furniture online, and this is also a great way to decide on colors and styles. A stylish chair can either be an innocuous addition to a room or form the room’s centerpiece, so let your imagination run wild and have a good time finding one that suits you.

Of all the different colors of leather chairs around, the brown leather chair is the most widely seen. If fact, if you combined color and material together, and compared all of the different types of furniture, you would be hard pressed to find anything that is more popular than a brown leather chair. Why is that? Let’s take a look at some of the reasons for their popularity.

The Feel of Antiquity

Have you ever seen an “old” red leather chair? How about an antique white leather chair? Yes, you may have seen a few in black, but brown just screams “old”. That’s not always a good thing, but with furniture, there are a lot of people who look for furniture that reminds them of an era long passed. Not all of those people can afford an antique chair, and even if they could, they may have a concern about durability. Luckily, you can have a brand new, durable chair that still has an old look to it.

The Tanning Process

The best way to make a new chair look old is through the tanning process. While most modern furniture is tanned using tree bark and other tannins found within plant material, it is far from the only option (more on tanning in my Varieties of Leather article). One method is called “oil tanning”, and is most widely used on saddles. It is also a very popular method for leather settees and other chairs that you would want a more “vintage” look to it. Oil tanned leather is very pliable and durable. You can tell an oil tanned piece from its oily or waxy feel.

The Dying Process

Another way to make sure that a leather piece looks old is to use very little tint during the dying process. The less colorant you use, the more 5the leather shows its “character”, which lends to the vintage look of the piece. In fact, if you were to take a chair and wrap it in full grain leather, with no colorant added, guess what color it would be? Yep, it would be brown.

The Quality of the Leather

Let’s say that you are going to go out and get the best quality leather chair that you can find. What color would it be? It would almost have to be brown. People know that the natural color of leather is brown. They also know that coloring something can hide imperfections. If a black leather chair says “sophisticated” and a white one says “posh”, a natural finished brown one says “quality”. In fact, if you were to go out and look for full grain or even buckskin leather furniture, you would be hard-pressed to find them in any other color.

The Verdict

You know, I have a black leather office chair that I am sitting in as I write this article. I have had people sit in this chair and ask, “Is this real leather?” Of course, it is real leather, but the point here is that, being black, it could just as easily be faux leather, and it would be hard to tell the difference. If it was brown, however, especially a natural brown, there would be no need to ask. Natural leather is something that you can’t really fake.

I think that pretty much says it all. The young 30-something father of two, driving his BMW, comes home to his black leather couch to relax for a few minutes before going to visit his father, who will be in his den, sipping scotch and smoking a Cuban cigar in his brown leather recliner. Not that either is better than the other, but each makes its statement.

Whether you are looking for a leather chair, sofa, ottoman, or any other type of leather furniture, they all have one thing in common – they are upholstered in leather. In this article we will take a look at leather – it’s types, grains, and most common uses. Hopefully by the time you are done reading this, you will be armed with all the information you could ever need to make yourself a savvy consumer.

First of all, what exactly is leather? By definition, leather is the skin of an animal, with the hair removed, prepared for use by tanning or a similar process designed to preserve it against decay and make it pliable or supple when dry1. These animal skins and hides are treated to preserve and make them suitable for use. By the process of tanning these skins are converted into a stable and non decaying material. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? But when that leather is draped over a frame and made into a gorgeous leather chair, we forget all about hides and decay…

Genuine leather is extremely versatile. No other type material can compare to its strength and durability. Your leather office chair or leather tub chair will impress and withstand time. However, it is important to remember that the quality of the leather depends a great deal on the type of leather you go with, as well as the grain.

Types of Leather

The most versatile type of leather is vegetable tanned leather. It is also the most well-known type of leather. Oak tree bark and other plants that contain natural tannins are used to make vegetable leather. The benefits of this type are that it stretches well when soaked in water and it can be carved, molded, painted, dyed, oiled, or waxed. This proves to be extremely useful in making leather furniture, and can also be the most expensive type of leather. Most of the time when you find a leather armchair, you will find that it is made of vegetable leather.

Another kind of leather is oil-tanned. The special feature of this type of leather is that it is usually the most agile type of leather. Any time you touch a leather settee or chair that has a slightly oily surface feel, it is most likely oil-tanned. This oily feel does not rub off on your hand, although it does offer a unique and interesting finish.

True buckskin leather is a strong deer hide that is very pliable. It is treated in a solution of wood ash and lime. This type of leather is extremely soft, supple and water friendly (which is a good quality to have in furniture). If you look at any type of buckskin leather chairs, make sure to inquire as to the tanning methods. If the hide has been treated by other tanning methods, it may cause the buckskin to lack the high qualities and feel of true buckskin.

Another type of leather is the chrome-tanned variety. It stretches much less than vegetable tanned and cannot be carved or molded. This type of leather is made by soaking the hide in an acidic bath that contains a high level of chromium. Chrome-tanned leather is relatively inexpensive and does take well to some dyes. Because it does not stretch well, it used mainly in garments or bags. You will not find (nor would you want to find!) leather chairs made of this type of leather.

Everyone has heard of rawhide leather. The term rawhide refers to an untanned type of leather that is the hide’s basic state. These cattle hides become very stiff when they are dried, but flexible and stretchy when they are wet. This, too, is rarely something you will find in furniture.

Leather Grains

Now, on to leather grains. Of all the different types of leather grains, the most expensive is full grain. You can have it made into just about any type of furniture – a chair, a couch, a settee or an ottoman – if you are willing to pay for it. Full grain is the connoisseur’s leather of choice. This is for primarily for two reasons. One of which is its exquisitely soft feel. The other is its personality. The downside of full grain is that it lacks the durability of other leather grains.

Full grain leather is available in two finishes: aniline and semi-aniline. Pure aniline leather is leather that is dyed without any pigments. This type of leather will exhibit some of the natural blemishes of the hide (personality). Semi-aniline has some pigment or clear finish, so the blemishes still show through, but with increased durability. If you are going to go with full grain furniture, be sure that you know how to properly care for it.

Another class of leather is top grain. Top grain leather is much more popular that full grain for use in furniture. This is primarily because it can be dyed more uniformly. Couches or chairs made of top grain leather do not show “blemishes”, which is preferred by most average furniture buyers. Top grain is more durable, so your leather furniture will last much longer. It is also much less expensive than full grain.

Split grain is the most widely purchased and is the type predominantly found in furniture stores. It is also the most affordable of the three. Its durability rivals top grain but is cheaper to make. People who are looking to get a new leather chair that will last a long time, but still save a few dollars will usually buy split grain. Large furniture retailers usually sell mostly split grain leather furniture. Some higher end stores will sell split grain as well, but they will often offer an option to upgrade to top grain leather.

The last in our group is bonded leather. Bonded leather is basically made up of scraps (or leftovers). If you were making leather furniture all day and then picked up your scraps and sewed them all together, you would have bonded leather. You rarely see it used to make furniture.

Cleaning

One more very important piece of advice: make sure to buy the proper cleaning products for your new leather recliner to keep it looking clean and stain-free. There is a variety of products to choose from, and your cleaning products should match the leather you are buying. Full grain leather is the hardest to clean, as it absorbs stains and liquids quickly. Try to wipe it with a dry cloth as soon as possible, and make sure not to rub the liquid into the leather. Then, leave it alone to dry—and it will dry quickly. Do not use furniture polish, oil, ammonia or any type of cleaning solvent. All of these will stain. Other, less volatile leathers are best taken care of with a professional leather cleaning kit. You can purchase these at furniture stores or online. Personally, I prefer a little Murphy’s oil soap and water.

When you are trying to find your next leather tub chair there are a few things that you will want to consider in order to make the purchase easier for you. Selecting furniture is a little more important than some people realize, and a lot of thought should go into getting the right type of furnishings for your home or office. There have been a lot of people who have simply gone into a store and liked something because of the way that it looked and bought it only to find out later that they did not like it as much as they thought. By taking the time to educate yourself about leather tub chairs you will have all of the information that you need to be able to make a well informed purchase of a chair that you will like for a very long time.

One thing that you will find when you are looking at this type of leather chair is the unique shape that it is in. A tub chair is considered an armchair. They are different from other types of leather armchairs, however, in that the back and arms of the chair have a horseshoe shape that come around to form the top of the chair. This makes it appear that you are sitting in an elegant looking horseshoe covered with leather and cushion. Of course as with all furniture you will find slight varieties of this type of chair but the basic look can still be described to be a horseshoe or “U” shape for the back and arms of the chair.

When it comes to the height of the chair you will find that it does not sit tall like a bar stool or other type of tall chair, but it also does not sit low so you do not have to worry about sitting near the ground. This chair is the perfect height that a chair should be in order to be comfortable while you are having a casual conversation with your friends and family. Some of the leather tub chairs that you will find have legs that are visible and other do not. Still, the ones that do not have visible legs on them are high enough off the ground for you to be able to maintain comfort.

As you know, one of the best features of a leather tub chair is the leather that it is covered with. Leather gives a distinct look to any room and makes everything around it appear to look classier. Leather has a timeless beauty that will never grow old, and the durability of the material will ensure that any type of furniture you have made out of it will last for a very long time to come. There are a few things that you will want to know about how to properly care for the leather if you do not already, but once you know how you will be able to keep your tub chair immaculate looking at all times.

You will be able to find a lot of different options when it comes to the color of the leather that you are thinking about using. You may already be used to the classic black look that you find most leather furniture made of, but there are other colors that you will be able to choose from as well. You will find different shades of brown, red, white, and other colors available for you to choose from. This will give you the option to coordinate your new leather tub chair with the rest of the furniture that you have in the room that you are putting it in.

There are also a lot of designs that you will be able to choose from when you are purchasing your tub chair. You can of course choose a solid design that only has one color or you may decide that you would like to have accents in the furniture that you are buying. You will want to take a look at the available designs to be able to choose the best one.

There is a lot more to know about a leather tub chair than you probably realized before reading this information. If you take the time to think about the tub chair that you are going to purchase you will never have to worry about regretting your decision on the one that you decide to buy. There are a lot of benefits, looks, and other things that you will be able to take advantage of when you are looking at all of the leather tub chairs available.

An acquaintance of mine and fellow webmaster contacted me to ask if he may write an article on leather chairs. I, of course agreed, and here you have his take on “What Type of Leather Chair?”

Leather chairs are beloved because they add substance and a touch of class to any room. Besides the color and quality of leather, there are other decisions to be made when buying a leather chair.

First off, what type of room do you plan on furnishing? Is it the dining room, living area, hearth room, family room, bedroom, or den? Once you have answered that question you can narrow down your furniture search.

The type of chair you purchase is determined in part by where it will go. However, chairs of different types can look good in more than one room.

What are the types of leather chairs?

- Leather dining chairs. Some people are surprised to see leather in a fine dining room, but really, it is the most practical of choices. Instead of fabric which can get greasy, a leather chair resists dirt.

- Leather arm chair. These are perfect for the living room, bedroom, or family living area off the kitchen. Depending how you accessorize, the room can look very masculine or more middle of the road. That is, a collection of tea pots will cause the room to look more eclectic, but dark leather walls will serve to make the room feel more manly.

- Leather club chair. If your downstairs recreation area has a card table or poker table, these would be perfect.

- Leather lounge chairs. Spectacular in the casual areas of the home, these leather chairs are a perfect choice. If you have a fireplace in the kitchen, these would do well on either side of the firebox in that kitchen and cooking area.

- Leather recliner chair. If you love being captain of your recliner with beverages and the remote, here is the chair for you. Being made out of leather, it will last for many a year.

When you purchase your leather chairs, consider how many you will need.

Once you know the type and quantity of leather chairs, and have decided on the leather color, also evaluate what additional leather accessories you may need for the room. For example, a leather chair is the perfect companion for the leather hassock or ottoman. These can also be used as coffee tables in larger sizes, or by placing two next to each other.

Ordering everything at once will allow for the leather to match better, because it may have come from the same dye batch. This is one advantage to ordering custom or more upscale leather furniture pieces.

A genuine leather settee makes a great addition to almost any living room. While you can get leather chairs made with faux leather, it does not really hold a candle to something made with real leather. There are a couple things you should be aware of before buying a leather chair. First of all, genuine leather settees do require some care. They are not like your average couch where you can take off the couch cushions, wash them in the washing machine, dry them and then put them back on. You will have to be careful if you want your settee to stay in good condition over the long term. If your home has one or more small children, you may find that leather furniture in general is not a good option until the children are older and less likely to accidentally spill things on it. If you have an indoor pet, then you would have to make sure the pet is either very well trained or cannot get into the room where your settee is going to be.

Another thing to keep in mind is that leather settees are quite costly. There are a few nice black ones made by Mayline that cost between $680 – $850, and would do for most living rooms, since black matches pretty much anything and the style of these very nice settees is such that it would blend in well no matter what the style of the living room’s décor. However, these are about the cheapest genuine leather settees on the market. After that, the prices vary wildly; most cost in the range of $2,000 to $4,500.

To get a nice leather settee, you do not have to be limited to black. While black is a classy color and it looks nice in almost any living room, you can gets real leather settees in wild berry, camel, chocolate, dove, white, bourbon, orange and vellum from Chelsea Wing. These are more contemporary in style and would look great in any contemporary style living room as long as the color you choose matches the preexisting furniture. These settees are not very cheap, however – they cost over $3,800 per settee.

It can also be nice to get something that is not just one plain color. There are a number of settees that are patterned and very artistic. If you have the budget for it, the St. Nicolas Settee is absolutely gorgeous. It is made with genuine leather and mahogany and is well suited for an elegant living room. However, whether this lovely item is worth is $6,500 price tag is arguable. There are a number of other choices that cost about half that much. For example, The Ambella Crocodile Settee, also made with mahogany, or one of Presidio’s many colors of standard settees made in the luxe style.

If you are not entirely sure of what would go well in your living room, it can help to do a bit of online research. By typing ‘leather settees’ or ‘leather chairs’ in any internet search engine you can find photos of many different kinds of settees and get a better idea of what options are available. In fact, there are a good number of online retailers that will sell leather furniture and often these retailers will offer their wares at a cheaper price than a regular furniture should would sell for. They also often have more of a selection and you can easily compare prices too.

There are, however, a few things you should keep in mind about shopping online. The first thing to remember is that it is very important to know the exact size of leather chair that you want. Measure the space in the living room carefully; if you order something in the wrong size it is quite a hassle to return or exchange it, as you will most likely be charged for the shipping. Also, check to see if the online retailer you are considering buying from offers free shipping for your purchase. Many do, while some only offer free shipping if you live in a particular area and others do not ship for free at all. It can be quite expensive to pay for the shipping, especially if the settee you are buying is one of the higher quality ones made with real hardwood, as they are quite heavy.

You may be asking yourself, “Is a black leather chair a ‘type’?” The answer to that question is “Absolutely!” A leather chair is not just a piece of furniture, or a statement of comfort, it is a statement of self. The color of your leather furniture says a lot about you – more so, if fact, than the color of any other type of chair.

The fact that you’ve chosen a leather chair in the first place says that you are a person who wants the ultimate in style, quality, and comfort. Otherwise you would have decided upon purchasing furniture made out of cloth or some synthetic blend. The style of the chair will also make a statement. Did you get a leather club chair because you wanted a chair that hearkens back to simpler times where furniture was more elegant? Maybe you decided to go with a leather recliner that would scream, “I am the King and this is my throne!” Either way, you are sending a message.

You are also sending a message when it comes to color. For that leather club chair, you would likely want to go with brown. A brown leather chair says traditional style like no other color. Remember the old adage that compared “new money” to “old money”. A brown leather chair says “old money”. So what does a black leather chair say?

Black is a very interesting color. It matches almost anything – new or old. It is just as comfortable in a retro style theme as it is in a contemporary. More than anything else though, a black leather chair conveys two things very well: elegance and luxury. Picture yourself visiting someone’s home, and the first thing that you notice when entering the living room is the black leather couch and recliner. However well you knew that person before, you definitely added some opinions of them after seeing the furniture.

One of the main reasons that black furniture has that effect is because of the darkness. For some reason, darker colors have a tendency to illicit an aura of sophistication. Not sure why that is, but it’s true. I remember, several years ago I got a hunter green leather couch and recliner, and it was the same. People would comment on how expensive they looked. The set really did have that “luxury” feel to it. Unfortunately, I lost that set in my divorce, but that is another story altogether.

One other color I would like to mention here, as long as we are talking colors is the white leather chair. White leather chairs also say sophistication very well. White says clean, organized, and all the other adjectives that describe aristocracy and wealth. A white leather chair will definitely give the impression of elegance and money. Be careful, though, because they are a bear to keep clean.

I think I have gone through colors pretty well here. If nothing else, I guess the moral is that if you are in the market for a leather chair, give some thought to the color and what you want to say with it.

When choosing seating for your home or office space, it is important that you choose pieces that will be comfortable without compromising style. It is okay to be selective when buying leather office chairs. With so many different styles and price ranges available, you really should do your homework to get the best quality chair that your money can buy.

For the first time shopper you should know that there are different types of leather textures. This material can be soft and smooth or hard and rough. Different styles come in different colors and even patterns to match your existing furniture.

Executive Chairs

The traditional nail head leather chair with tufted back trim are typically made of leather and wood with a matching wooden base and a gas lift making it easy to adjust the seating level. Most executive leather chairs also feature the lockout mechanism to prevent the chair from tilting back or swiveling.

The executive high backed leather chair can come in firm or plush leather to suit your taste as well as a few different basic colors. Most of the higher priced chairs come with pneumatic seat adjusting and padded arms to offer the most comfort. Swivel/tilt features allow you to sit back and relax without ever leaving your seat.

Low back leather chairs for mid-level to top executives cannot be ruled out. Typically in black, these chairs offer style and comfort for those extended office days. Most of the higher priced low back chairs offer the same features as the high back chairs; pneumatic adjustment features, tilt and swivel options, lockout feature and dual wheel casters.

Waiting Room Chairs

When purchasing chairs for multiple seating such as a waiting room or other high traffic areas, consider the benefits of leather seating. The leather is much easier to keep clean and maintain not to mention from a hygienic standpoint. Fabric tends to trap odors while leather does not.

Conference Room Chairs

Depending on the office décor, a conference room could be decorated with inexpensive leather chairs, chairs with woo and leather trim, or luxurious high back leather chairs for everyone attending those important meetings.

Office Staff Chairs

Depending on the type of business you have you will have to accommodate all of your staff. While most people do not go out and purchase new chairs for everyone at the same time, you cannot forget about the other members of your business who work behind the scenes. Receptionists, secretaries, administration, maintenance and all of the other individuals carry out the day to day functions are important too.

Ergonomic Chairs

Many struggle for comfort in their current computer chairs. Back support or the lack thereof is one of the major contributing factors of back pain, especially for individuals who are sedentary for long periods of time. There is a solution for this problem – ergonomic seating. Poor posture can lead to back problems as well as neck and shoulder issues. Leather office chairs with adequate lumbar support and sculpted backs are not only appealing to the eye, but they will help eliminate potential problems or even alleviate current back problems. It is recommended that anyone who sits for an extended time invest in an ergonomic chair.

Cost Factors

Undoubtedly leather is more expensive than fabric, but when you weigh the cost against how long leather chairs will last you will find that it is well worth the investment. Most individuals spend eight to 12 hours a day at their place of employment, keeping them comfortable is a small price to pay for a business running efficiently.

Before considering your next leather office chair purchase, take some time to shop around. Aside from the price you want to check for warranties, multiple purchase discounts, and even free shipping offers. Check your local stores or current vendors. You can also find great deals for buying leather office chairs online. This is one purchase you will not regret.

Very few things can make you feel like a VIP quite like a high back executive leather office chair. These chairs speak of prestige, offer comfort, and ease-of-use, aid in productivity, and command respect.

An ideal executive high backed leather chair offers adjustable height, easy controls, locking tilt mechanisms, optimal support, comfort, durability, mobility and attractive looks as well. Ergonomic design is important to make seating a pleasurable experience, particularly in an office setting. A comfortable executive leather chair can create a healthier work environment by offering lumbar support, comfortable armrests, and a design created to encourage good posture. Decreasing strain on the body is proven helpful in increasing productivity.

Some of the elite chairs in the spectrum can be quite costly. However, when a person spends a great deal of time seated in an office chair, it pays to purchase quality. Leather office chairs can be purchased in any local retailer that handles office furniture, or they can be found online at a number of different vendors. Doing an online search for a particular brand of chair will often let a person read reviews written by other people who have purchased that brand or style of chair, which can be very helpful in making a choice as to which chair might be most suitable.

Some of the top brands in leather executive high-back office chairs are Global, Boss, Office Star, HON, and many others. These chairs come in a great variety of styles, with many different features, and in varied price ranges.

Target sells a high back executive leather chair called “Black Cherry” which is an Office Star brand high backed office chair that has a cherry finish wood base and arms, offers pneumatic seat height adjusting, tilt tension, tilt lock, 360° swivel, and black top grain leather finish. This chair is a great value at just $330.

For just over $500, one can purchase the Allure executive leather chair. This chair features memory foam that will relieve stress on the body’s pressure points and it has highly resilient foam for added comfort. It has the pneumatic seat adjustment, full swivel capability, and a fully upholstered back, and it comes with an HON Ltd lifetime warranty.

For the ultimate in luxury, a person can treat himself or herself to fine Italian leather in the Global Softcurve chair. Designed with ultimate comfort in mind, this chair has waterfall type edges to aid circulation by sloping forward and reducing behind-the-knee pressure, which can improve blood flow to the legs while a person is seated. The dual wheel casters will allow a person to glide easily about the room without having to get out of the chair. For this kind of luxury, a person can expect to spend around $620.

For something a little bit different, a person might consider the KC-696TG Tufted leather executive chair in top grain burgundy leather. With its thick padded head rest, padded leather over mahogany wood arm rests, pneumatic seat height adjustment, and attractive sophisticated styling, this chair is a perfect combination of ergonomic seating comfort and quality old world craftsmanship. At around $600, this chair is toward the higher end of the price spectrum.

However, if a person’s budget does not support the purchase of a more costly chair, Boss offers a high back traditional office chair, for under $200. This chair features traditional styling, is available in black or oxblood, is height adjustable and has tilt tension control. This chair is an excellent budget priced value from Boss Office Products, and is a great alternative to high priced office furniture, offering comfort and style at a great price.

There are many different options in prices, styles, colors, features and functions when it comes to quality office furniture. Purchasing an executive high backed leather chair is an investment in comfort and productivity, so a person should shop around, and see what is available before settling into the comfort and luxury of the perfect leather chair for their home or office.

A leather chair, or any piece of leather furniture, is no longer a luxury restricted to the very wealthy. As leather furniture becomes more affordable, and more people add such pieces to their homes or offices, the cleaning and continuing care of these pieces becomes paramount—especially because, being more durable than cloth or vinyl upholstery, leather cared for well can last more than two decades according to many furniture experts.

You probably clean all your furniture once a week if not more often, and leather furniture is no different. If your piece is not used frequently, a simple wipe down with a soft, dry, clean cloth will do the job nicely, but if it is used daily you will want at least to vacuum the piece with a bristle brush attachment and not a firm upholstery nozzle.

In the event of stains, swift removal is paramount for leather furniture. The moment a spill occurs, blot it. Wiping it can spread the stain and make it more difficult to clean. Clean, soft, damp cloths and a little soft soap and warm water can get the spill up fast and without spreading the stain, but the maker of the piece may suggest other methods to get rid of a spill or stain.

Leather includes natural oils that need to be replenished at least four times a year when you give a major cleaning to your furniture. However, before you think about that, you should think about the proper location for your leather furniture. These pieces should be kept no closer than two feet from direct heat—fireplaces, heat ducts, portable heaters, even direct sunlight if you plan to keep these pieces in rooms with widespread window lighting, especially because sunlight can cause color fading and drying out. In addition, it is a good idea never to sit in a leather chair or on a leather sofa unless your pockets are emptied. Objects like keys, key rings, pens, pencils, paper clips, and pocket knives can scratch or even cut leather.

When you do basic cleaning on your leather furniture every week, it is also a good idea to fluff their cushions and rotate them according to how much use they receive. This generally fights wear spots and uneven natural color fading, though good leather preservatives should keep the color as well as the material itself in good condition for years to come.

What about specific leather preservatives? Mink oil and castile soap have long been considered good leather preservatives, but manufacturers are now marketing several products blending certain oils and natural ingredients to do the job. Obenauf makes three products—leather oil, heavy-duty leather preservative, and White Jaguar. The leather oil is easy to apply whether your leather chair or furniture is fine or coarse grain, and is made to cover and protect large surfaces. It is rubbed on with a clean cloth and allowed to soak in with the excess buffed off. The heavy-duty preservative is considered industrial strength, is applied by rubbing into the leather with your hands, and is made of an all-natural formula mixed into a beeswax-and-propolis formula. White Jaguar is the company’s plant-ingredient mixture that uses no chemicals or bleach.

Summit Industries is marketing Lexol, a leather conditioner blending several oils without chemical solvents and using a small droplet system to penetrate leather fibers simply and strictly within the area to which you apply the solution. The problem with using chemical solvents, Summit says, is that they can migrate or bleed into adjacent materials and cause discoloration or other damage to your furniture. They can also be flammable or irritating.

Regular and proper cleaning and maintenance of leather chairs and other leather furniture is vital for one reason above all: once your leather chair is discolored or dried out, it can never be restored to its original condition.
