Today I wanted to talk to you about LED lighting solutions like the RGBW (warm white) strip. A lot of customers want to have RGB lighting as well as warm white lighting at the same time. I mean you could put an RGB light and a warm white strip at the same time but sometimes there is not enough space or that is just not efficient.

So here at I'd come up with a solution for that.

I have come up with the RGBW Strip and basically what this strip is an RGB strip with warm white diodes all together. So it alternates from RGBW (warm white) RGBWW and it goes like that all the way down to the strip.

Not only is this strip awesome because it has a Warm White in the RGB all together. But the PCB board that everything is mounted on it is a lot thicker and it is made with a lot more pure copper.

So that makes the strip very efficient. It dissipates heat really well and it really minimizes voltage drop and current drop and all that stuff. This strip could be control with DMX or it could just be controlled with regular DC power. But for most applications DMX works pretty well.

To control this you need a driver a DMX LED driver and I have the LED-CON4-R2. This is the new 4 channel controller from SIRS-E. This is a revision 2 model it has more watts per channel and also it has a flicker free frequency refresh rate.

So if you are doing anything like that where your lights. Flicker will keep it from doing that. For a lot of home applications like a lot of customers have asked us like for kitchen cabinets and things like that.

I got these cool stand alone DMX controllers. Here I have the LumiDesk Touch Nano (LD Touch Nano) this is a nice simple little controller.

You know you can create your scenes, scroll, change and all that stuff. And you program all your scenes with your computer.

Then, connect this to the driver. The driver to your LED Strip and there you go you got control. If you are looking for something a small more sophisticated a little more esthetically pleasant.

I got the Stick-DE3 this here you got a colored wheel. You could select all sorts of colors. It got a LCD display you could label all your shows.

This is pretty much as this but this is a standalone DMX interface. But it is a little bit more sophisticated it's got a little bit more "bells and whistles" (sort of speak).

So this is pretty much it. This is like a said the RGBW strip. It is very cool for the different things you can do with it.

The first stage is Remove old lights and divided into the following steps

1. Remove the light box from the scribe.
2. Cut off the old cable and remove it from the old power supply.
3. Remove the old halogen light bulbs
4. Leave the ceramics and the wire leads just in case of future halogen replacement
5. Unscrew metal ring from the side of the light box.

The second stage is install new Led panels and divided into the following steps

1. Put the cable from the power supply through the light box from the outside to the inside. Make sure that the power cable goes through the round metal ring then into the light box.
2. Screw the black and red cables onto the metal clamps.
3. On the Led panel put electrical tape on the front side and the backside of the panel.
4. Slide the Led panel into the light box, lights facing outward and the soldering holes closest to the hole where the power cable goes into the light box.
5. Attach the clamps to the soldering holes on the Led panel.

6. Put extra electrical tape wrapping the clamp and the attached power cable to the clamps. Make sure red is connected to positive and Black is connected to negative.
7. Power on the Led to check the lights
8. Secure the Led panels using the white tie cables. Make sure that the Led panel is centered; left and right sides are square.
9. Double check everything is secure and power on the lights again.
10. Secure the light box back on the scribe.
11. Put the diffuser paper back into the light box.
12. Power on the light

Light bulbs used to be simple: just run a bunch of electrical current through a thin wire until it heats up enough to start glowing. Bare filament electric lamps were first demonstrated around 1800 by Humphry Davy, and the glass bulb was added later to keep oxygen away from the wire so it could glow for a long time without actually burning up.

So the incandescent light bulb is 19^th century technology, and by at the present there's now a blinding array of electric lamps - halogen light bulbs, fluorescents, mercury and sodium vapor lamps, LEDs, lasers and so on.

Each one makes its own clever use of physics to achieve the life goal of a light bulb: converting electrical current into visible light. Here's how they work.

Sodium, mercury, and metal-halide vapor lamps, which are commonly used for lighting streets, warehouses, gymnasiums, and other large areas, are also tubes that run electrical current through a gas. The gas itself emits mainly visible light so these bulbs don't need a fluorescent coating.

Finally, LEDs are also like fluorescent light bulbs, except replace the gas with a tiny crystal of semi conducting gallium, and throw away the bulb so not like fluorescent bulbs.

But seriously, the semiconductor has two layers, one of which provides excited electrons, even as the other provides a place for the electrons to go and relax and that *is* the technical term. LED light can save up to 80% of energy and the life span of LED bulb is 5 times longer than the compact fluorescent lamps and twenty five times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs that means in the long run you will be saving a lot of the expenses spending on the energy maintenance and replacements.

Plus, LED light bulbs contain no hazardous materials to contaminate our environment. We are saving the earth for our new generations. when you buy a LED bulb,

First of all you will need to know if it is going to physically fit into your fixture. Lamp bodies are categorizing into shape and size. Shape is indicated by English letters most commonly seen including, a lamps PAR lamps, MR lamps...ect.

Size is indicating by numbers immediately go after the shape code. For example A19 bulb, PAR38 bulb, and MR16 bulb ...etc.

Next, we need to make sure the mounting base will fit. Mounting bases are also indicated by English letters followed by numbers for size. For residential customers, the most commonly seen mounting base is Edison screw-in base for example E26.

This is usually called "medium base". There are also pin style mounting base. For example, a lot of MR16 lamps use GU5.3 bi-pin connectors. Refer to the information provided with your lighting fixture and find the correct lamp body, size and mounting base to use.

Now, the lighting performance of the lamp a lot of time you will find a "LED Lighting Facts" label printed on the retail box. Lighting Facts is a U.S. Department of Energy certified program for LED lighting products. It provides essential information to evaluate products and identify the best options.

On the lighting facts label there are several keywords that you need to understand before you can make a decision.

First of all, Brightness the brightness is indicated by Lumens, which is the scientific unit used to describe whole light coming out of a light source regardless of the beam direction. The higher the number, the brighter the light source is.

Second, total power consumption indicated in Watts. This number tells you how fast this bulb will be burning energy.

And then, the Efficacy this is the ratio of Lumen over Watts.

The first number over the second which indicates how efficiently the energy provided will be transferred to visible light.

This number is essentially the most important indicator telling us how well is this product designed. On the upper right hand side you will be able to find the brand name of the product next is the CRI short for Color Rendering Index this is the aptitude of a light source to correctly render color. We will cover this one later on.

Finally color temperature this number tells us the color of the light generated the color of white light can be either warmer or cooler, and it is indicated by Kelvin temperature certain color temperature is considered better in certain situations

or hospitality industries warmer color temperature can provide the atmosphere and ambient fallings desired this means the color temperature should be below 3,000 Kelvin traditional incandescent lights are in the 2,700 Kelvin range for industrial users or working environment, cooler color is usually preferred because it mimics dat light and will keep people alert A 3,500 Kelvin or about light is considered in cooler range most of the traditional fluorescent lights are in 4,000 Kelvin or above

The Color Rendering Index or CRI on the lighting facts label tells us how well can the light bulb correctly present color in our eyes it is measured and calculated based on the response of the light on 8 indexing colors

The CRI is measured in reference with a perfect black body radiation or incandescent light source for incandescent CRI is set to be 100 the closer a light source can get to 100 the better quality of light it provides industrial standard for CRI of warm color LED light is about 80 or above

today I am going to tell you how to calculate how many strips you can run per power supply.

As the power consumption of the strips related to the power supplies, I am going to use today the dual density and single density strips compare them to the 400W power supply as an example. So let me step over to my white board and I'll tell you the basic math that we use to figure this out. So basically what I am going to be doing is I am going to tell you

How to divide the consumption of the strips by the capacity of the power supply?

All of strips have data sheets which tell you the max consumption at full intensity. That is for the

RGB and for the whites and all different sets of strips either 5050, 3528 all of them have amperage consumption data sheet.

So today I am going to talk about the RGB dual density and the RGB single density. Just to give you a plan on how to do it. And I am going to compare it all with a 400W power supply. So the dual density strip consumes right around 48 watts.

Ok and that is at full intensity with all the colors and everything on all the way. And then the single density consumes exact around 23 watts. Give or take a watt or two and that is pretty much what it is. I am going to be using a 400 watt power supply. This right here the 400 watts that is the capacity of the power supply.

But you never want to run it at full capacity because what you run risk of getting it too hot and that will shorten the life of your power supply no to mention other issues that could arise from that.

So now that you know your power supply capacity and how much of it your strips consume. Then you can form out everything out using very simple math. So the way you do it you get the capacity of the power supply which is 400 watts.

And then divide by the 48 watts that the strips consume. This is the 48 watts for the dual density strip. Once you do this basic math problem it comes out to about 8 give or take. So that is 8 dual density strips that you can put on there.

And you'll like "ok great I can just put 8 of them in there no problem" right?

But the issue by doing that is that you are going to be running your power supply at full capacity.

And you know I already talked about the issues with that. So you can obtain thermal issues and a bunch of other issues that it is best to avoid. So now that we know 8 is one-hundred percent if we do 6 that will be 75 percent of your capacity. So I do 6 dual density strips RGB Strips.

Ok.

That will equal to true around 350 watts or so. That right there is about 75% capacity of the 400 watts which would be perfect to run the strip at. So 6 strips would be the maximum that you could run safely without running into any issues or anything like that

So the alike procedure goes for the single density and for pretty much any other strip. Whether is a 400 watt power supply we also have the 96 watt the 200 watt and the 150 watt water proof power supply. So it is a safe procedure.

All you got to so is plug-in the numbers. Let's say it's a 96 watt power supply and you are using single density strips. You put in 96 watt 23 watts down here for the single density and then you get you maximum number and then you calculate that to get a 75 percentage capacity. 80 percent that is pushing it.

And that will give you how many strips you can do safely. So that is attractive much all there is to it. It is a very simple math problem that you can use. So there is not a whole lot of crazy science or anything like that.

Today I'm going to tell you how to change out your bathroom light fixtures. We all have been in that situation where you have an old light. You just want to change it out into something modern and new.

And I'm going to be using the Portfolio line of light lighting. And what I like about that is that you can pick out the lighting bar and then you can add your own sconce to it

A sconce of your choice, not the choice of the manufacturer So I picked out these sconces; I'm going to add them to this light; and before you know it, I'm going to transform this lighting fixture in my bathroom into something that's cool and modern instead of something that looks like it's from 1988.

So let's get started...

Before you get started, turn the light off at the circuit breaker. After turning off the power, remove the sconce.

In this particular case, you have to remove the light bulb first then you just unscrew the sconce. The next step is to remove the mounting nuts that hold the light in place.

Here's a handy-dandy tip:

Use a utility knife to score around the light. When you score the paint around the light prevents the paint from being pulled off the wall. Simply pull the light off the wall. Then use a voltage detector to check for electricity.

Next, take off the mounting bracket from the junction box. Pull the mounting bracket out. And at this tip, you definitely want to take a picture of your wiring. And note we have one neutral wire which is white, and one black wore which the power is coming into the junction box.

Unwire the hotwires which are black. Then unwire the neutral wire which is white. Now you can remove the entire bathroom light fixture. The next step is to add the mounting bracket to the junction box. But before you do that, notice the orientation on the light fixture where the bolts are going to be. And they're vertical. They're straight up and down.

So, one at the top and one at the bottom that means that you're going to have to mount the mounting bracket with that same orientation

And in this case, they have these little mounting screws already in there. So these mounting screws have to be mounted vertically.

So I line up my mounting bracket like so with the holes that are in the junction box. Get the two screws that come with the Portfolio light fixture. Mount the primary screw in place just a little bit. And then mount the second one through the mounting bracket and into the junction box. You can then tighten these screws with a screwdriver.

The next item that you want to do is tighten this nut in the center of the mounting bracket.

The reason why you want to do that is because it'll keep this mounting bracket completely vertical and, therefore, your light will stay vertical too.

Before you go to wire anything, make sure that these screws are long enough to go through this portion of your light. They're nowhere close. They're not going to come through that hole this hole here.

So either I need to modify the mounting bracket or put a longer nut on here a longer screw on here. My recommendation is this: Before you leave the store, open up your lighting box and get a set of longer screws longer mounting screws that match up with the shorter screws that come with the light fixture.

If the long screws are too long, you can make a mark on them with a Sharpie. After that you can cut them with combination strippers. Now it's time to wire the light. Add the grounding wire from the light to the green ground screw on the mounting bracket. Wire the two neutral wires together so the two white wires together. Really tighten that wire nut.

And finally wire the two hotwires together with the second wire nut. Push the wires to the back of the junction box. Position the light on the two screws that you have sticking out of the bracket.

And finally, add the nuts that hold the light in place.

Today I am going to tell you my Review about Philips led lighting, these are the Philips L-Prize award winning bulbs. So they're ten watt bulbs, they're the equivalent to a sixty watt bulb but they give they give off 940 lumens which is actually a little more than with a sixty watt bulb gives off.

So they are LEDs, supposed to last practically forever, you'll have to leave them in your will. So twenty two point eight years nice thing is that they are dimmable. They are a soft white.

It's kinda funny 'cause they're actually yellow here but when you turn them on they become pure white. Actually on the back they talk about that.

So this is when they're off; this is when they are on.

And after turning them on that really is true

So there are a lot of benefits to it. So for one thing, you get a lot more lumens than a regular sixty watt light bulb gives off.

It only uses ten watts, but plugging into the kilo-o-watt meter it actually uses a little more than eight kinda almost nine.

But the nice thing about it gives off almost the same exact light as a regular incandescent bulb. I t looks almost exactly the same.

It's not like the cfls where they give kind of a yellowish light or the previous LEDs which kinda give off more of a bluish tone.

There's a couple of gotcha. There is it's not a suitable for everywhere. I'll see if I can focus better.

So you can't use them and enclosures or in tight-fitting spaces. Basically they'll cook themselves. uh... there's a whole list here on the back that their not usable for.

Pretty much just regular open lights where or they can kinda dispense the heat so they have a little paragraph here on the L-prize. What it means and how they won it and all that blah blah blah stuff.

So down here they have where they talk about how it energy it save, how much power it uses, how long it lasts and they have the warranty on it so the bulb itself of this kind of nice

I have an open one and definite looks different than a regular light bulb. Same connection though. But it definitely looks different; it's also a lot heavier so the yellow doesn't light up yellow when it is turned on its more of a white compared to what I had before got this from SMUD at the State Fair. They were just giving these away.

This is the sixteen watt... or sixty watt bulb using fourteen watts of power. But it looks more like a regular light bulb just with a CFL inside.

Power wise this uses a lot less and gives off a lot more light. This uses fourteen watts but looks more like a regular light bulb. It's also a lot lighter.

But it doesn't give off as much light. 800 lumens versus 940 lumens and the coloring is a little bit different this is more of a kinda yellow where this is really white or really close to it But not like the LED white, more like an incandescent light

Here actually we will do a little example. I'll light them both up side by side.

This one's new in the packaging and this one's new in the packaging-never been used so let's go ahead and do that right now.

Alright so here's our non so technical test on the left hand side we have a sixty watt CFL that's never been used and on the right hand side we have the L-Prize Phillips LED sixty watt bulb also that has never been used and they're both hooked up to a surge protector. I'm going to flip the switch and they'll both turn on at the same exact time so we'll see what happens the L-Prize is already at full brightness

The CFL is really dim but it takes about a minute for it to get the full brightness And there's the test. And you can see against the wall that it has pretty good spread coverage

It has those three lil sections that it shoots light out of, you can't really see that on there and the cfl bulb is now brightening up

It's also not quite a fair contrast because the CFL bulb is only rated for 800 lumens where as the Phillips LED L-Prize is rated for 940 lumens but also the LED one uses a lot less energy ten watts... well not A LOT less but 10 watts vs. fourteen watts for the sixty watt bulb.

Alright so the Philips LED actually did pretty well compare to the CFL. Turned on instantly, full brightness businessmen to the government said skip full brightness now but as far as this one is with u brighter forty one percent amendments that was those expected uh... the of nice thing is desired immobile this was not as that will be giving Campbell soup bowls after listening to that worked very well had to get your demme's the led approved ones for the Phillips one where is your bills mammy network the older style

Upgrading your ceiling light for bathroom is an easy project that allows you to not only enhance the style of your bathroom but also add useful task lighting to help you get ready for the day. Today I am going to tell you how to replace your bathroom vanity light.

The tools you're going to need are: Wire Cutters, Wire Nuts, Screwdrivers (or drill and drill bits for convenience). You may also need a utility knife.

First, always make sure you turn the power off.

Next, disconnect the old fixture from the wall. Our fixture was sealed to the wall, so we had to use the utility knife to cut around the seal of the light.

Now, disconnect the wires and the bracket from the junction box.

Next, connect the bracket of your new light fixture to the junction box.

Now connect the wires of the new light fixture by matching colors. Black to black, white in the direction of white, Ground in the direction of ground.

With the wires connected, hide the wires and attach the light fixture to the bracket.

Once the light is connected, you may need some paint to touch up any exposed areas around the new fixture. i decided to just go ahead and paint the whole bathroom as part of our bathroom makeover.

I will talk about controlling single color LED strip using a small selection of LED controllers

Firstly, I will tell you how to adjust the brightness levels, and turn off and on some strip starting with one of lowest cost devices to achieve this. The part numbers of the products I am using and I will go through each part with you to explain what they are

The first product is LED-TDS. This is a simple touch sensitive dimmer that sits in between the power supply or LED driver depending on what you are using to power the LED strip and the strip it. I am also using one of 12vdc 5 amp power supplies. You will see this power supply has fixing lugs so it can be secured down to any flat surface and an integral mains lead.

This PSU can be simply plugged into a standard UK socket, or the UK plug could be removed if you would prefer to wire it into a fused spur.

Finally you need the LED strip 9.6 watts per meter 12vdc cool white LEDstrip.

Ensure the power supply is plugged in and switched off before making the following connections.

First plug the power supply into the input socket of the LED-TDS touch dimmer. Then connect the output connector of the touch dimmer into the socket of the LED strip.

You will remember all of single color LED strip comes pre-fitted with a suitable input socket to facilitate quick powering or you can fit these input sockets yourself where the strip has been cut down.

Once it's all connected, switch the power supply on. A quick touch of the LED-TDS will turn the LED strip on and off. If you touch and hold the LED-TDS it will dim up and down until you release it at your desired brightness level. The LED-TDS can be touched anywhere on its case and is supplied with a Velcro pad which allows dimmer to be located on any flat clean surface.

I will now move on to demonstrate how little hand held remote, which is supplied as 2 parts, can be used to control your LED strip. I will use the same LED and power supply as before, as well as a little cable, which will allow us to quickly connect the power supply to the receiver part of the controller and cable to help connect the strip into the controller

First, plug the cable into the output of the power supply. Then take the bare wires from the cable and connect them into the input side of the receiver part of the compact-dim. The White wire is stamped with writing and this is the + wire. The negative wire has no writing or markings.

Now connect to the output side of the receiver & plug the strip into the strip into it. The receiver and hand held remote should already be paired together, but just in case i will tell you how to pair the 2 parts together here Press the ID Learning button on the receiver. You will see when you do this the flashing LED remains on.

Then press any key on the remote to pair the 2 parts. The LED will now flash rapidly to confirm pairing has been successful. You are now ready to use the little remote to control your LED strip.

Touching various areas of the wheel on the remote achieves varying brightness levels. Full instructions are provided.

Now, i will tell you how to use LEDWALLDIM-WHITE. This unit is a wireless wall mounted LED strip dimmer and is the final example of controlling single color LED strip.

Once again I will use the same tape, the same power supply, the LEDWALLDIM-WHITE and the receiver unit which is supplied separately. I supply the receiver separately as it's possible to pair multiple receiver units to just one of the wall controllers which enables you to power a large amount of LED strip, in multiple locations if required.

The wireless wall controller unit is battery powered so can be mounted literally anywhere without having to run wires to it. First remove the front face from the LEDWALLDIM-WHITE by gently pulling the dial off, along with the plastic collar.

Then insert the button cell battery in its carrier in the slow ensuring the + on the battery lines up with the + marked on the unit. Then re-assemble the front cover & replace the collar and dial.

Next, connect the power supply which is fitted with the output cable into the LEDWALLDIM-RECEIVER unit. Then connect your LED strip into the receiver unit. Make sure the + and minus wires are the right way round.

Then pair the wall mounted dimmer and the receiver unit together. Instructions are supplied, but this is simply done as follows. Briefly press the learning button on the receiver, and then press the dial on the wall switch in. Your LEDs will flash once to show pairing has been successful.

You can see that you can now wirelessly adjust the brightness levels of your LED strip. Turn it off and on by pressing the dial as demonstrated. The dimming is achieved using a PWM signal, which provides smooth linear operation.

So wavelength we can calculate by using, the expression of energy. So this is not visible.

Because we know that the range of visible light is approximately from 4000 to 8000 angstrom. So here if the wavelength emitted is in infrared region only. But say if we talk about a specific semiconductor

This is not in your syllabus but, just for, an example I am taking up. For a. gallium-arsenide phasphide semiconductor if we talk. Or for a gallium-arsenide phasphide semiconductor if we construct a diode then we can say for this particular semiconductor the value of Fermi energy gap is approximately 1 point 9 electron volt. And corresponding to this particular energy when photons are emitted

The wavelength of emitted photon can be given as h c by delta e-g. And in this situation the value will be. 1 2 4 2 3 divided by 1 point 9. On calculation it’ll give the value approximately. 6 5 3 8 angstrom and this is the wavelength matching to. Green color of light in the vibg yor this is in the region of the middle range of the visible colors. So here we can say when a diode is constructed by, gallium-arsenide-phasphide-semiconductor as an intrinsic substrate. And in this situation when current flows through the forward biasing zone. Here we can state.

The wavelength of green color will be emitted from the. Junction and this color is emitted. So such kind of diode which emits light wavelength from the depletion layer these are called, light emitting diodes. On the next sheet we’ll see. A realistic situation how a light emitting diode works? Dear students lets discuss a realistic situation. how a light emitting diode works. Here this picture shows you. a light emitting diode. And it is basically a semiconductor junction we can zoom it and see.

Similarly such semiconductors can be used to make l e d’s. In which, the Fermi energy gap is. Of the order of specific energy which corresponds to red light of wavelength or yellow light of wavelength. Or blue light of wavelength. And corresponding l e d’s will glow in various colors. I'm going to tell you how to install a modern ceiling light and replace the ugly light fixture that you have above. So let's get to it. I've got a lot of awesome tips for you. Before you know it, you're going to have a new and modern look. So let's get started.

Always start every single electrical project by turning the power off at the circuit breaker or your fuse box Double check that the power is off by flipping the switch on and checking that the light doesn't turn on.

Carefully remove the old shade. In this case, the shade is just attached to the fixture with these tabs. So I'm just going to remove the glass shade and yuck! There are some nasty bugs inside there.

One little step that I like to take is two-fold: take the light bulbs out 'cause they're made out of glass and they will shatter if you break them yes, I found this out the hard way; the other extra tip is to use blue tape to hold the old fixture to the ceiling while you lower it down. I like there to be slack in the tape so that I can lower the lampshade down about 4-6 inches.

The fixture is held to the junction box with 2 screws. And in this case, these screws actually have nuts on them. So all you have to do is loosen the nuts or the screws, whichever one you have, to lower the fixture down from the junction box.

With the 2 nuts removed, I can now lower the light fixture from the junction box carefully.

All right as you can see, the 3 pieces of blue tape are holding the weight of the light fixture for me. So now I can just fish out the wiring from the connection box. Now you can fish out the old wirings. So I've got neutral wires here. All the white wires are pigtailed together.

So in this case, all the hotwires are wired together, too. This light is on a 3-way switch. So I just wanted to let you know about that in case you're wondering about this red wire here. There were also black wires that were shoved up into the junction box.

Plus then finally you have your ground wires that are all pigtailed together. And I highly recommend taking a picture of the wiring so that you know how to wire the new light together. With all the wires exposed, now you can undo the pigtails and remove the light fixture from the junction box.

I personally like to unwire the hotwires first so all the black wires go first. Then I like to unwire the neutrals next. And then finally, unwire the ground wires last.

Now I can take the fixture off the ceiling and remove all the blue tape.

Oops! Almost

There's one ground wire connecting the lamp to the bracket here. So I just need to take that off or cut it off, whichever. Remove the old mounting bracket using a flathead screwdriver or Philips head screwdriver, whichever you have or whatever screw you have that's holding this bracket to the junction box.

Hey, you know what one extra step that I forgot to tell you about? When you lower the light down, you can actually stick a voltage detector in between the light and touch the wires and see if they're alive. So this is just one extra precautionary step to ensure that you don't get electrocuted.

So sure enough even though I've been handling these wires for a few minutes they're not live. But I wanted to tell you about using a voltage detector. Now it's time to take the mounting bracket for the new light.

Have the green ground screw facing you, and take the longer mounting screws and place them into the inside holes so this hole here and this hole here because you're going to use these mounting screws to mount the light to the bracket. So turn them maybe like 3 or 4 revolutions. So put them in, turn those clockwise 3 or 4 times.

Very good, now you have your mounting bracket ready to go and be mounted onto the junction box. Now you can add the mounting bracket to the junction box using the shorter screws. Now slide the screw through the slot and get it started in the junction box. And you can use your screwdriver to tighten the screws that mount the mounting bracket to the junction box.

Here's the top of the ceiling fixture. So you have one bare copper ground wire. And then each light socket has a hotwire and a white, neutral wire. So there's one light socket there. And then here's the other light socket. So again, it has a black hotwire and a neutral white wire. So the

first thing that we're going to do is wrap the bare copper ground wire around this green screw. So I'm going to wrap it around this green screw.

And then tie it into the ground wires that are coming from the junction box. So again, we're just going to wrap this copper ground wire around the ground screw right here. And we're going to tighten that down. And then we're going to pigtail the ground wire that we just wrapped around the green ground screw with the ground wires that are coming from the junction box. So when you're done with the ground wires, you can push them up into the junction box. The next step is to wire the neutrals together.

So what I like to do is twist the wires coming from the light. So I'm going to twist the white wires from the light together. And then I'm going to join them to the neutral wires coming out of the junction box. I'm going to put a wire nut over all these wires. Okay. So there are all the neutral wires. They're wired together.

The next step is to wire all the hotwires together. In this case, I'm going to wire the black wires from the light together. And the hotwire that we're going to be using is the red hotwire. So I'm just going to be just wiring the red hotwire with the black wires from the light 'cause that's what fits the configuration of my set up.

Yours could be different so make sure you follow the directions that come with your light. Try to wrap the wires from the light to the wires in the junction box by about 1-2 revolutions, then twist on the wire nut again. And then finally, we don't use the black wires that are up in the junction box.

They're pigtailed to make the electrical connection. But they don't really touch the wires that are coming from the light fixture. So again, we've got all the ground wires wired together; all the hotwires from the light wire to the red wire coming from the junction box and then all the white wires from the light connected to the white wires in the junction box; and all the black wires in the junction box just pigtailed together.

Push all the wires up into the junction box. Now it's time to mount the new modern fixture onto the mounting screws here. Push the fixture up such that the mounting screws come through.

And then you can turn the fixture so that the screws are in the smaller portion of the keyhole. Now you can use your screwdriver to tighten the modern light fixture up to the junction box.

Now you take the threaded nipple and screw it into the light fixture. There's a locking nut on this nipple, and what you need to do is screw that up to the top like so that the nipple doesn't come loose. Now you take your light bulbs and screw them into the fixture like so. Just make sure that they're appropriately rated for the new light.

In this case, I'm using 60W light bulbs. Carefully take your shade, slide it up over the nipple.

Usually these lights come with a decorative piece like this one. And then you just screw on the end piece here like so. Not too tight 'cause you could break the glass lamp shade.

All right, And there you go. Now you can turn the power back on at the circuit breaker.

Well there you have it. That's how you install modern ceiling lights. Not too bad, right?

Tons of different tips that I want you to follow like: taping the old light fixture to the ceiling; and checking the voltage with the voltage detector to make sure you don't get electrocuted; and as always, turn off the circuit breaker or take the fuse out when you're working with electricity

Recessed lights are versatile and present light in either a general purpose setting or as I way to highlight specific areas of your home. Because of their recessed nature you get all the illumination with none of the visual clutter.

Recessed lights are comprised of three sections the first section is the housing the second section is the illumination and the third section are the trims

Here you have an example of IC-rated new construction housing

It is new construction because it goes attached to the joist by these arms on the sides it is IC-rated because you can have the installation go right up to the box without any risk of hazard of heat

The second is also new construction, as you can see, with the arms

Whether you're constructing a new home but you cannot have the installation coming up to the fixture and then the third type is a remodel housing

This one is very simply inserted by making a hole in the ceiling and attaching the arm through and then being held in place by brackets and by a trim that pops in at the very end.

The second part to recessed lights is the illumination

Typically they were used with medium based bulbs that look like this or with a PAR20 or PAR30, that look like this Later on, lighting advanced and low-voltage fixtures were made which, typically look like this, an MR16 Now the latest technology which is the LED

The LEDs mimic the shapes of the traditional ones but it has other advantages like a longer life, reduced heat and less electric consumption

They can also still be used with these fixtures but you need a special dimmer in order for it to work

The third part to the recessed lights is the trim this is just the aesthetic part

It comes in square, circle or a mixture of both

You may have a square on the outside and a circle on the inside

My one recommendation is to always use something with a gimbal

The gimbal is the section in the middle that will move around this will give you flexibility in case you want to light an artwork, or a niche or some kind of statue.

there are a few examples of recessed lights being installed in a new construction application are attached to studs. Once attached and the electrical work is run the ceiling is applied. In remodel applications the ceiling is existent and holes are made to accommodate the fixtures.

These can be tricky because the placement of the lights is based not only on their functional value but too on existing studs and other factors in your ceiling.

Once the holes and electrical work have been run the installer pushes the remodel housing through the open hole and attaches using brackets in the housing.

As always remember these installations should be complete by a licensed contractor or electrician.

How it Works: The basic principle of operation of a fluorescent lamp is simple. You have a

glass tube, on each end are electrodes called Cathodes, and in the case of a hot cathode type lamp they are a little filament, that is why you have two pins on each end because each pin goes to one end of the filament, and these filaments inside are electrodes that send current through the gas in the lamp the gas in the lamp is argon, and there is a little bit of mercury in the tube, just a tiny amount just a pinhead amount of mercury.

And how it works is when the current is switched on these cathodes head up and they are coated with a special material that gives off electrons, it works on the same principle as the vacuum tube and it's called thermionic emission, when it heats up it gives off electrons, and that is good because when they heat up they give off electrons then a high voltage pulse is sent through the lamp from the starter and that pushes those electrons through the lamp from one end to the other and it starts and arc through the lamp through the gas that is in the lamp which is argon, and this argon arc makes enough heat to vaporize the mercury that is in the tube and that goes into the arc stream and produces ultraviolet radiation ultraviolet light, and this UV light hits a powder on the inside of the tube that is why they are white it's called a phosphor, it's a material that glows when ultraviolet radiation strikes it.

When it hits the phosphor, it makes it glow. and that is what produces light.

Now what I'm going to do is start up a nice Sears fluorescent lamp that was made by Westinghouse and branded as Sears, they are not common today that starts in a preheat fixture with a "Starter", and you'll be able to see the preheating of the lamp when I start it

Beautiful start, you see it blinked a couple of times because the lamp didn't catch on the first try

So the starter just re-glowed, heated, closed the contacts and tried again and the starter will keep trying until it restarts the lamp there is a little delay, there is the cathode heat, there is the start, beautiful start

The starter is really good in this fixture, this [preheat type] is the design that came out in 1939 and it is still with us today and it is unbeaten in reliability

The reason why they have different colors: warm white, cool white, even solid colors similar to pink, blue and green

The reason why they create different colors is because there are different blends of the chemicals used in the phosphors, like for example if you took the phosphors of the blue lamp and mixed it with phosphors from a pink lamp you could get a white lamp and in fact this cool white lamp I have in my hand has a specific blend of the blue phosphors and the pink phosphors, makes white by using a certain balance.

So the blue and the reds balance together and produce a white light. Of course there are other colors emitted too blue and red are the predominant colors, and the simplicity of the lamp is the advantage another advantage that it doesn't get hot, the ends get a little hot to the touch because of the filaments but not hot enough to burn you, the center runs lukewarm because the current flowing through the gas produces mostly UV light and it's at low pressure, so it doesn't produce a lot of heat which is an advantage because

Fluorescent lamps can produce a lot of light on very little energy. For general lighting, inside of buildings for white fluorescent light can not be beat in efficiency, it doesn't matter if you have an old fixture from the 1940s that uses starters and has ancient electrical gear inside of it or the most modern electronic ballasts the efficiency of the lamps hasn't changed much over the years, the disadvantages are few maybe sometimes contact issues, they don't want to start sometimes things like that. If you turn the lamp on and off frequently you can shorten its life

Color quality of the light isn't as good as incandescent, that is another disadvantage, but their advantages outweigh their disadvantages.

LED lamp is very energy efficient as it consumes less energy than standard halogen or fluorescent lamps for the same light output.

LED lamp also has a very long lifespan, on average 10 to 20 times longer than halogen and incandescent bulbs.

Which kinds of bulbs can be replaced by LEDs?

LED lamp

- Fluorescent tubes with a G13 socket

- Fluorescent bulbs with E14 or E27 socket

- Halogen and incandescent lamps of all types

Unfortunately PL lamps and discharge lamps don't have LED replacements yet.

How to choose the right LED lamp?

First off, look at the socket of your current lamp.

You need to choose a LED bulb with the exact same base, otherwise it won't fit in your fixture.

Secondly, you need to choose the correct wattage for your LED lamp.

On average, you need to divide the wattage of your current halogen lamp by 5 to find the equivalent LED wattage. For all Philips LEDs, the halogen and LED wattage is shown in the name of the products.

For example, Philips LED bulb 12-60W E27 is a 12W LED bulb, made to replace 60W halogen lamps with a E27 socket.

Finally, you can choose the color temperature of your LED lamp:

827 is a very warm light used in common households

830 is a warm white light, often used in hotels or restaurants

840 is a cold white light used primarily in offices or supermarkets

Most halogen lamps that you are currently using have a color temperature of 827.

Can I use LEDs on my current transformer?

If you have 12V MR16 halogen lamps with a GU5.3 socket, you can replace your lamps with LED without changing your transformer.

To be Compliant with your installation, you need to choose a LED with the correct wattage equivalent.

So for example, if you've got a halogen lamp of 35W, you need to choose a Philips LEDspot of 7-35W.

Dimming of a LED lamp Not every LED lamp is dimmable so you need to be careful if you would prefer to dim the lights:

Dimmable LEDs from Philips have the letter D in their name: for example Philips LEDspot LV D 10-50W is dimmable.

In most cases, the Philips Master LED range is dimmable, and the Philips CorePro LED range is not dimmable. Dimmable LEDs from Osram have the word Pro in their name. Dimmable LEDs are compatible with most dimmers on the market.

led diode is a light emitting diode called an LED still its like a regular diode and in sense that this is its schematic symbol except that we are going to shoot the couple of light beams out here… here. It is giving off light.

Current only flows through one way. This is the cathode here and this is the anode side. When this side is more positive, when the anode side is more positive than the cathode side the current will flow through. So it allows current only flow in one direction like a valve. Here I have a circuit setup; I am going to add the light emitting diode.

We not going to see any light, but I have power to it so what's going on. On the LED, there is a flat side here that flat side is the cathode, which needs to be more negative, but my circuit up here is the positive and this is the negative, so current does not flow and I am going to pull it out.

I am going to turn it around to 80 degrees now the cathode will be on the negative and there we go it lights up. So now current is flowing through it, but since this is an LED it gives off light when current flows through it and that’s a led diode.

Over the last 40 years advancements in LED technology have launched this light source into a resource bright enough to illuminate any application. Understanding the basics is simple. Most of the LEDs used in the lighting industry are comprised of a base, a diode, and a protective lens.

LED technology for lighting

These three main components are usually attached to a PC board. When electricity passes from the PC board through the base and across the diode, the LED illuminates. Essentially the diode acts like a filament in a traditional incandescent lamp.

The main difference is the diode in an LED is very esilient. It's made of a solid crystal which makes it more rugged. This characteristic is why LEDs are a solid state lighting source and also explain why they can be used in a number of applications that a traditional lighting sources cannot.

The last major aspect of how an LED works relates to heat. Contrary to what most people think, LEDs do give off heat. Instead of the heat radiating from the front of the light source like an incandescent or fluorescent lamp, an LED dissipates the heat backwards, through the base and PC board.

That is why many LED fixtures have large heat sinks connected to the back of the PC board. LEDs will soon become the preferred light source over traditional sources. For starters, LEDs operate using very low wattage but still provide the same amount of light as traditional sources.

Today LEDs are up to 80 percent more efficient than incandescent lamps and up to 30 percent more efficient than fluorescent lamps. LEDs are a more durable light source that don't have fragile filaments and therefore don't break simply.

Not only are LEDs more rugged but when paired with a well designed fixture, LEDs are made to last for about 50,000 hours over the life of the fixture. In most cases these benefits combined to give LED light fixtures a better overall total cost of ownership over conventional lighting systems.

Over the life span of their system, LED systems will cost less and save more energy than incandescent and CFL systems. There are many LED manufacturers trying to take advantage of the LED boom.

But not all LEDs are a good quality. There are many cheaply manufactured LED fixtures out there that are tarnishing the industry's reputation by providing sub par performance.

There are several technical differences that can affect an LED fixtures performance. Two of the most critical are the fixture design and the quality of LEDs utilized in the fixtures.

For example, some of the fixtures have a white and even bluish tint, while others look yellow. Even though all the fixtures shown are the exact same product, their color temperature is drastically different.

A low quality spec was chosen for this LED fixture. LED binning is a major concern for lighting manufacturers designing fixtures around LEDs. It's the process by which LED manufacturers group LEDs together in bins by quality and consistency of critical performance attributes such as light output, color and power consumption.

The binning exercise allows for consistency in color from one LED to another and consistency from one fixture to the next in a complete application. To understand binning, it is necessary to know a little bit about how LEDs are manufactured.

First the diode crystal is grown in a giant wafer. This giant wafer is then cut into smaller pieces which eventually are used in the diode component of the LED. Even though all pieces are cut from a single wafer, are made from the similar material, they are not all the similar.

A piece cut from one end of the wafer might have a different lumen output and a different color than a piece that is cut from the other end of the wafer.

This is why buying LED fixtures from a reputable manufacturer that uses a narrow binning spec is so dangerous.

It is also important to understand that while a smaller binning spec increases the quality and consistency of the light emitted, it also increases the cost of the fixture. Rest assured

But if further validation is desired before buying a fixture, take a look at the fixtures lighting facts label. Lighting facts are similar to a nutrition facts label but apply to lighting fixtures.

Lighting facts outlines the light output of a fixture in lumens, the watts used and the efficacy of the fixture in lumens for each watt. The color quality is also listed as a number 0 through 100 on the CRI or color rendering index scale.

The closer the number is to 100, the better the color accuracy. Lighting facts also list the CCT or correlated color temperature. This scale ranges from 2700 degrees Kelvin which is a warm yellowish color to 6500 degrees Kelvin, which is a cool white or almost blue color.

Additionally buyers should look for a LM-79 testing report to validate an LED fixtures lumen output. Never buy an LED fixture if its lumen output, color temperature, or else color accuracy cannot be validated before the purchase.
