Troubleshooting Common Communication Problems with Outdoor LED Signs:

The most common problem that customers typically face is the ability to communicate with the sign. There are many reasons why your sign can freeze and become unresponsive. Luckily there are many easy steps you can follow to see if the issue can be resolved yourself and potentially avoiding yourself a costly service call.
• Make sure software settings are correct. Depending on your method of communication with the sign you need to verify that the IP Address, Phone Number or Serial Port is correct. This tells the software how to connect to the sign and where it is. If these settings have changed or are incorrect you will need to change them back and then test to see if communication has been restored to the sign.
• Power cycle! Turn off the LED sign whether it is a switch at the sign or a breaker and wait anywhere between 30 seconds to a minute and then power the sign back on. Any electronic device whether it is your Computer, Media Center or an LED Sign can become unresponsive over time. The situation is further compounded since Electronic Signs typically run for days, weeks or even months at a time without a power cycle. Cycling helps restarts and restores all of the signs vital functions. WHEN IN DOUBT POWER CYCLE!
• If communication with the LED sign is still not functioning the next step would be to check your networking equipment. This equipment serves as the highway for your information to travel from your computer to the sign. If any of the roads are broken on this network then you will have issues and difficulty connecting with the sign. One of the easiest things to check for is to insure that all Ethernet cables are connected properly and are not loose causing potential problems.
• If cables and connections look good the next thing would be to insure that all the equipment in your network is functioning properly. A failure at any single point in your network will cause communication problems with your sign. If in doubt power cycle your transmitter and receiver and any other equipment in your network such as routers and switches that could potentially be unresponsive.
• Unfortunately if you are still unable to resolve the issue yourselves the next recommended step would be to contact your LED Sign supplier. The sign company will help walk you through the some common problems such as software and hardware settings. In the worst case scenario they will be able to help narrow down the issue and get the proper equipment and expertise to get your sign back up and running.

Tuba City Boarding School was established in 1898 under the authority of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for the education of Native American children in Northern Arizona. In 1901, the school relocated to its present location in Tuba City, AZ. From its beginning up until the 1940s, the school was operated by the Department of the Army. Then in the 1950s the school came under the direction of the Department of the Interior. Today, the school is operated and funded by the United States Bureau of Indian Education.
Originally, Tuba City Boarding School was a self-sustaining and self-supporting school designed to teach children practical skills such as baking, agriculture, livestock care, gardening, cooking, and laundry care. Up until 1980, all TCBS students resided in the school's dormitories.
Today, Tuba City Boarding School is one of the highest achieving schools on the Navajo reservation. Considerable educational gains year after year have catapulted the school to an official AYP status for the past three academic years beginning from the school year of 2005/2006. There are 55 General Education classrooms, 8 Special Education classrooms, 2 Gifted and Talented classrooms, 5 Native American Education classrooms, and 6 large Computer Labs serving approximately 1200 Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth grade students.
Recently, the Tuba City Boarding School campus completed construction of a brand new campus with five of the six new buildings now occupied. The new buildings occupied houses all grade levels from Developmental Kindergarten through Eighth grade, the cafeteria, the library, and the school administration. Selecting an LED Sign Manufacturer

Everybody is selling LED signs these days. I went to the International Sign Association show in Las Vegas 2009. There were a lot of manufacturers there from China, some of which have been sending me weekly emails promoting what a great product they sell.

Some of the Chinese LED people may have a good product but how do we know?

I was finishing up my buffet dinner at the Excaliber Hotel when a young Chinese lady I had talked to at one of the booths joined me for coffee. Although I have been selling indoor and outdoor LED signs for almost 20 years with http://www.alpha-led.com/ I was very impressed with her knowledge of LED suppliers world wide and her knowledge of all the U.S. LED sign suppliers. She gave me a 2 hour seminar regarding the different LED suppliers (i.e. Nichia, Cree, Ledman) LED corporate structure and quality of LED signs sold by U.S. and Chinese manufacturers.

We have evaluated several "off shore suppliers" but have not found the quality we require for our customer base. I have talked to many sign companies who do sell the "off shore product" simply because their customer demands a low price. Our customer base demands a low price and a quality product.

Since 1995 the light emitting diodes (LEDs) market has been demonstrating amazing doubledigital annual growth rates through the year 2004. The worldwide market totals over 5.8 billion US$ in 2005, in which the high-brightness (HB) LEDs take more than 70% of market share. The increase by now has been largely driven by the wide utilization of mobile devices such as cellphones and PDAs during the last years. The main applications included keypad and display backlighting for these devices.
Although the growth of the cellphone market has shown signs of deceleration. Other new applications of LEDs will provide new highlights for the market expansion in the next 5-10 years. The major foci of the industry will be the utilization of LEDs in the general illumination, automotive lighting and the development of LED backlighting for television and computer monitor screens.
The breakthrough in white LED products and Ultrahigh brightness (UHB) LEDs, which produces more than 20 lumen per watt (the light output of normal 100-watt incandescent lamps), make the utilisation of LEDs in the general lighting and automotive lighting visible. As the UHB LEDs are approaching to the output level of 80 lumen per watt, which is the output of standard fluorescent lights, they will by and by replace the fluorescent bulbs in households, offices and other places around the world in the future, because they are energy saving, pollute less, have better light quality and have a much longer lifetime than fluorescents. Up to 2015, the market segment of general illumination is expected to reach US$ 5.5 billion worldwide.
However the challenge is still ahead. Today, the manufacturing costs of LEDs is still prohibitively expensive for the broad use for illumination (see. Table 1. ). The steps of the applications depend chiefly on the new technologies which can significantly reduce the manufacturing costs. Nanotechnology is the most promising technology in this field .
The use of LEDs for automotive lighting, e.g.headlamps, and for large screen backlighting, e.g. for television and computer monitor screen, are also interesting for the industry´s future development. LEDs´ advantages of energy efficiency, long life and flexible design are the value added points for the automotive and electronics producers.
Organic light emitting diodes (OLED) is another fast growing product. The OLED display is widely considered as the product which will replace LCD (liquid crystal display) for its multiple advantages such as energy efficiency, large fields of view, low weight, small volume, flexibility etc. Although some technical problems and high manufacturing costs hinder it to enter the large sized display market, the growth of small sized OLED will keep an annual growth rate of around 40%. It is forecasted that if the commercilization of large sized OLED display comes, the potential will be astonishingly huge. An estimate is that by 2015, the OLED display market alone will go beyond US$ 10 billion.
Divided by regions, USA and the Asia-Pacific regions are the most important markets, as well as the industrial leaders. However, Europe also has its stength in some fields, such as automotive and illumination engineering. Asia-Pacific region is also the market with the fastest growth rate due to the booming economies such as China and India.
The global LED market is dominated by five companies from USA, Europe and Japan, but South Korean and Chinese manufacturers have been constantly growing during last decade while they were mainly serving as suppliers for the American and European companies. Now, the supply chain in East Asia is becoming complete and the substantial challenge against the traditional market leaders is on the way.
Companies from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are the most competitive players in the OLED market. However, a large part of the core patents are still controlled by USA companies. Since the global OLED industry is just at its beginning, the competition during the next 5-10 years will be decisive for the long run.

Quantum Dot LEDs
A new technique developed by Michael Bowers, a graduate student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, involves coating a blue LED with quantum dots that glow white in response to the blue light from the LED. This technique produces a warm, yellowish-white light similar to that produced by incandescent bulbs.[29]
Quantum Dots are semiconductor nanocrystals that possess unique optical properties.[30] Their emission color can be tuned from the visible throughout the infrared spectrum. This allows quantum dot LEDs to create almost any color on the CIE diagram. This provides more color options and better color rendering white LEDs. Quantum dot LEDs are available in the same package types as traditional phosphor based LEDs.

Because of their long life and fast switching times, LEDs have been used for automotive high-mounted brake lights and truck and bus brake lights and turn signals for some time, but many high-end vehicles are now starting to use LEDs for their entire rear light clusters. Besides the gain in reliability, this has styling advantages because LEDs are capable of forming much thinner lights than incandescent lamps with parabolic reflectors. The significant improvement in the time taken to light up (perhaps 0.5s faster than an incandescent bulb) improves safety by giving drivers more time to react. It has been reported that at normal highway speeds this equals one car length increased reaction time for the car behind. White LED headlamps are beginning to make an appearance.

A time zone is a region of the Earth that has adopted the same standard time, usually referred to as the local time. Most adjacent time zones are exactly one hour apart, and by convention compute their local time as an offset from UTC (see also Greenwich Mean Time).
Standard time zones can be defined by geometrically subdividing the Earth's spheroid into 24 lunes (wedge-shaped sections), bordered by meridians each 15° of longitude apart. The local time in neighboring zones would differ by one hour. However, political and geographical practicalities can result in irregularly-shaped zones that follow political boundaries or that change their time seasonally (as with daylight saving time), as well as being subject to occasional redefinition as political conditions change. Before the adoption of time zones, people used local solar time. Originally this was apparent or true solar time, as with a sundial, and later it became mean solar time, kept by most mechanical clocks. Mean solar time has days of equal length, such that the difference from apparent solar time, called the equation of time averages to zero over a year.
This became increasingly awkward as railways and telecommunications improved, because clocks differed between places by an amount corresponding to the difference in their geographical longitude, which was usually not a convenient number. This problem could be solved by synchronizing the clocks in all localities, but then in many places the local time would differ markedly from the solar time to which people are accustomed. Time zones are thus a compromise, relaxing the complex geographic dependence while still allowing local time to approximate the mean solar time. There has been a general trend to push the boundaries of time zones further west of their designated meridians in order to create a permanent daylight saving time effect. The increase in worldwide communication has further increased the need for interacting parties to communicate mutually comprehensible time references to one another.

Worldwide sports management company Octagon contracted ENTECH LED Signs to fabricate and install multiple indoor and outdoor LED sign countdown clocks. The LED signs are used to countdown to the first Ohio State football game for the 2008 season. Sponsors included WOW!

Cable Company and BIGTEN Network. The LED signs were installed in the Columbus, Ohio area.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) started by the British for maritime navigation in the 19th century. Greenwich, England was established as the Prime Meridian with a longitude of zero. In 1970 the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) system was devised by an international advisory group of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The time system was designed to be universal and worldwide in nature so that there was no confusion. The abbreviation became UTC.
Zulu time is based on GMT time, UTC time is based on midnight while GMT is based on noon.

The military uses time zone clocks throughout the world.

What exactly is an LED sign? LED's are (Light Emitting Diodes). The bulbs are designed for long life (100,000 Hours Minimum) and use very little energy. Therefore LED programmable signs can be used to send a lot of attention getting messages at low cost. LED signs are widely used in a variety of locations. Anywhere from your local elementary school to Times Square, New York. Anywhere that people have a message to convey that absolutely needs to be noticed, you will find LED signs!
Why use a programmable LED sign?Simply put, they are a "re-useable" resource. LED signs are a one-time investment that offers great flexibility.
How do my messages get into the LED sign?If your message is simple, then you would use the handheld remote control. With this user-friendly input device you can enter multiple messages with canned animations and you can even schedule messages. There also are IR message loaders available to program from a PC then you would hand carry this to remote signs or different locations for downloading. Most customers use our (off the shelf) messaging software, or write thier own custom software. Networking options are also available to send messages to multiple signs.

The military uses indoor and outdoor LED signs. A common location is to place an outdoor LED sign at the front gate. These are used to welcome visitors and inform of upcoming events.

Security levels can also be displayed on the LED signs. This shows a typical installation. Displays are easy to program using a PC and connecting via ethernet. Wireless control is also available.
