Community Service

Through community service, youth can learn new skills, take on responsibility, become more aware of the needs of others, and learn the importance of being unselfish in their giving. Community service links students to the wider community and may expose them to people and situations outside their previous experiences. Service learning can also have a number of positive effects on young people including the development of leadership, communication, and organizational skills along with increased self-esteem. Youth can learn about the value of cooperating with one another and work as a team with diverse groups of people including adults, peers and others with unique backgrounds and experiences. Each of these aptitudes is extremely valuable for young people as they begin to apply for colleges and seek employment in the workforce. Research by the University of Minnesota Community Service-Learning Center currently suggests that participation in service learning opportunities encourages the development of the participants overall leadership, collaborative, and communication capacities. This study has also determined that those youth participating in community service will increase critical thinking and problem solving skills, which will likely benefit school performance and grades.

Bark Shedding

For about a month now, I’ve been getting queries about oak trees exfoliating. That’s science talk for “the bark’s coming off.” Last year I had lots of calls on this and went with two specialists from the Forest Service to visit several sites. We were concerned about Hypoxylon canker, a fungal disease of trees and all trees were fine except one. Sometimes the shedding has been associated with a large number of caterpillars on the trunk, and I surmised woodpeckers were flaking off the bark to get to the lunch line. But caterpillars are not always involved.

Resolution in Support of Senate Bill 433

Resolution in Reference to ABC Permit Applications

During the May primary a referendum to authorize the off-premises sale only of malt beverages and unfortified wine passed in most townships. The authorized alcoholic beverages may be sold only after a proposed licensee receives a permit from the NC Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The Lee County Board of Commissioners approved the attached resolution designating the Capitain of the Lee County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division as the official to make recommendations to the NC Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission on ABC Permit applications.

Strawberries are Plentiful and Nutritious

The first sign of warmer weather means the opening our local farm stands and the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables. In plentiful supply are our locally grown strawberries that can be found throughout the county at roadside stands and farms.

Fresh strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C; just eight medium strawberries have 140 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. That’s about 55 percent more vitamin C than you would get in the same serving of oranges. These delectable delights are low in calories‑‑one cup of fresh berries contains only about 45 calories. Of course sugar and syrup used for freezing, or cream poured on top, can add many extra calories.

Lawn Care Essentials

Creating a healthy lawn is key to having a beautiful lawn. Keeping weeds out of the lawn is easy if the grass planted is maintained properly. Proper maintenance includes mowing at the proper height. For tall fescue the proper height is 3 to 3.5 inches. This height will help prevent weeds, keep the root system cool, and encourage a deep root system that will be able to reach water and nutrients to prevent stress. The proper height for summer lawns is as follows Bermudagrass 0.75 to 1 inch, Centipedegrass 1 inch, Zoysiagrass 1 inch, and St. Augustinegrass 2 to 3 inches.

Pollinator Gardens

As the weather warms up, butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees are seen busily working in our gardens. These pollinators are extremely important for the future of many plants, as well as our own livelihood.

Pollination is important because it creates seed to ensure the future of the plant species. Many of the fruits and vegetables we eat are a result of pollination. Approximately one out of every three bites we take when eating, are the result of animal pollination.

Beating Boredom

Plant Pathology

Plant Pathology Extension seeks to reduce economic losses from plant diseases by providing the link between research and its application in the field. Extension faculty develop integrated disease management programs based on the latest research, diagnose plant diseases, and provide educational materials to commercial growers of row crops, forages, fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and turfgrasses and to homeowners growing these crops to enrich their surroundings and our environment.
