Kidnapping Survivor Elizabeth Smart Gets Married

NBC News reports:

SALT LAKE CITY -- Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at age 14 from her Salt Lake City home and held for what she described as "nine months of hell," married her fiance in Hawaii on Saturday, surrounded by only immediate family.
Smart, 24, and Matthew Gilmour became engaged in January, initially announcing a summer wedding. According to the Smart family spokesperson, NBC station KSL of Salt Lake City reported, those plans changed a week ago in order to avoid attention to the unscheduled ceremony in the Laie Hawaii Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Oahu.
The couple and family were celebrating with a private reception and luau, after which Smart and Gilmour were leaving for an extended honeymoon, KSL said.
"Elizabeth is grateful to be celebrating her special day with those closest to her without distraction," family spokesman Chris Thomas said. "Her wedding further demonstrates it is possible to rise above challenging circumstance to lead a happy and productive life."

Time For a RomneyCare Mea Culpa

Great opinion piece in the Washington Times from Dr. Milton Wolf.

Dr. Wolf writes:

Conservative voters have a message for the Republican establishment: Not so fast. The Washington-knows-best GOP insiders who gave us John McCain, George W. Bush, Bob Dole and George H.W. Bush are now pushing Mitt Romney. Conservative voters are pushing back. Hard.
Self-described conservatives outnumber liberals in America 2-1 - 42 percent to 21 percent, according to Gallup polling - so it’s no surprise that Republican candidates describe themselves as conservative. Heck, even Barack Obama once described former president and New Dealer Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Mr. Big Government himself, as an “economic conservative.” (Of course, compared to himself, President Obama is almost right, but that’s another matter.) Yet, for all these “conservatives,” our out-of-control government continues to metastasize into every area of our lives, from choosing our light bulbs to choosing our doctors.
The word “conservative” is at risk of losing its meaning. Liberals like Mr. Obama have launched a calculated assault on the word, falsely claiming the mantle in an effort to disguise their march toward statism. What’s far worse, however, is when conservatives - or at least people who genuinely believe themselves to be so - erode conservatism from within.

Get Ready For $5 Gas This Year (Video)

Get ready to pay $5 a gallon for gasoline this year. John Hofmeister, founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy and the former CEO of Shell Oil’s U.S. operations, warned that there is a “better than 50 percent chance” the price of gas will spike on continued heavy demand in emerging markets and weak public policy at home.
He also sees West Texas crude prices touching “the midteens to $120 a barrel some time this year.”
“What’s really unprecedented is developing countries, particularly China and India, have this insatiable need for more oil and that has not been taken into account when we think of public policy in this country,” he said.
"So while we may be producing a bit more oil in this country, and while demand is down a bit, on a global basis I’m afraid we face a continuing onslaught of prices creeping ever higher,” he said. “I hope I’m wrong on this. I'd love to be wrong on this."
Hofmeister, a CNBC contributor, spoke Friday, the same day the International Energy Agency cut its oil growth demand forecast for a sixth straight month because of the weak global economy. He disagreed with the IEA, saying “demand is still growing” at a time when East Coast refineries are closing because of declining margins and the uncertainty in the Persian Gulf heats up.

Young Boy Saves Grandmother's Home From Foreclosure

With all of the stories of tragedy that are seen in media on a regular basis, there’s an inspirational tale coming out of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, worth noting. Noah Lamaide, a 12-year-old boy, has raised $10,500 to help save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure.

Janice Sparhawk, 72, was going to lose it all. In fact, an auction had been scheduled for Feb. 15. She had fallen behind on her mortgage payments, thus thrusting the future of her home – which has more than 100 years of family history — into uncertainty.

Her situation was ironic. Over the years, Janice had donated much of her time and energy to helping those around her. In fact, she has served as a foster mother to hundreds of children across Wisconsin; to find herself in such great need has certainly been a change of role. Luckily, Noah came to her rescue.

Wow: Apple's iPhone Division Now Bigger Than All Of Microsoft

Apple's iPhone business alone is now bigger than Microsoft. Not Windows. Not Office. Microsoft. Think about that. The iPhone did not exist five years ago. And now it's bigger than a company that, 15 years ago, was dragged into court and threatened with forcible break-up because it had amassed an unassailable and unthinkably profitable monopoly.
The iPhone also appears to be considerably more profitable than Microsoft. In the December quarter, Apple's iPhone business generated $24.4 billion of revenue. Microsoft's whole company, meanwhile, from Windows to Office to servers to XBox, generated $20.9 billion (see chart below).
If we assume that Apple generates the same operating profit margin on its iPhone business that it generates on its overall business--38%--the iPhone business generated about $9.3 billion of profit in the December quarter. All of Microsoft, meanwhile, generated only $8.2 billion.

Smartphones Out Sell PCs For First Time In 2011

Forbes reports:

2011 marked the beginning of a major shift toward mobile computing. Smartphone shipments topped PCs for the first time ever last year, by 73 million units, according to figures published by research firm Canalys on Friday.

Last year a total of 487.7 million smartphones were shipped. Only 414.6 million PCs, which include tablet PCs, shipped. That’s a 62.7 percent increase on shipments of smartphones over 2010. It’s yet another important step on the road from isolated, search-oriented computing to a more social, mobile, and inter-connected web. App sales have also exploded, marking a major shift away from traditional software and games.
