Little Bird Blue

A little while ago, in an online artists community I am a part of, someone suggested that we all try our hand at a Bluebird. I cant remember why cause my brain doesn't work well at remembering things sometimes, but it sounded fun.

Now, me being me, I got caught up in doing a bunch of other things and then suddenly realised that I hadn't gotten around to my bluebird picture. So I cheated a bit. Just a bit though. I used an old image (my 'Mister Robin Finds The Key' design in fact) and bluebirded the be-jebus out of it.

Then, again me being me, I took forever to actually post it about the place cause I kept getting side-tracked with shiney things like Pinterest (which is stupidly addictive and I officially love it) and Twitter and setting up a spanking new laptop to work from (which I also officially love).

But now, here it is in all of it's cheaty-pants design glory. 'Little Bird Blue' is available now through most of my online outlets, and hopefully in the future will also be made into a repeating patterned fabric over on Spoonflower as well. So keep eyes open for an update on that one in the future.

Once again I've had a grand old time creating a design specifically for a Spoonflower weekly fabric competition.

This week's theme was "cityscapes" and I just couldn't resist showing off some of my favourite bits of architecture here in old Aarhus, Denmark.

The design, 'Cycling Aarhus' is a simple repeating pattern of these favourite buildings, interspersed with the bicycles that are a permanent fixture of Danish society. The buildings featured include Aarhus Domkirke (The Cathedral), Toldboden (Royal Customs House) and Domhuset (The Courthouse). I'm guessing it would be perfect for curtains and interiors, for lovers of architecture, travellers, your Danish friends, cyclists, and anyone who enjoys simple line designs in pastel colours.

I think voting is open until Thursday, 19th of January 2012, so get in quick to cast your votes. You can vote for as many designs as you like, and be warned, there are some fabulous patterns on display, so you might want to put your drooling bib on.

'Lee Lee and the Bee' gets a makeover!

Hello all. Well, if you have visited any of my stores or blogs before, you know that what you see right here is a big change up!

Gone is the old white text on a black background and in comes the fresh new light page with darker texts.

The reason for my doing this is twofold.

First, it's a whole new year and I felt like I needed a refreshing change. I work on these sites everyday and sometimes, a punch in the face with a re-design is just what one needs to keep sane and to rejuvenate.

Secondly. I am getting old, and all that white on black was hurting my eyes! My poor old person eyes! And if it's hurting my eyes, I can only imagine how hard it is for folks with even older eyes than my to cope with it.

Singing the season with the Yule Chorus

I saw some toddlers the other day, all out for a walk with their pre-school teachers. These kids, who were probably 5 or 6 years old maximum, were all rugged up against the cold in the most fun coloured jumpsuits, jackets, hats and scarves. As they noisily bustled and rustled past me, one of them particularly caught my eye. She was decked out like a little Christmas ornament, all in red and green and with a grubby, well-loved Santa hat shoved jauntily on her head. She was obviously well liked and happy too, as a couple of her friends were holding her hands and as the three of them walked along they were singing some little song which made no sense to me at the time, but was so pretty.

This amount of adorable was too much to bear. I just had to come home, and after putting my shopping away, create something to illustrate just how cute these girls were in their big foompy padded winter jumpsuits with their rosy cheeks. And so the 'Yule Chorus' range was born.

The design depicts three young girls in an almost 'kokeshi' style wear Christmas patterned cloaks, warm scarves, and Santa and elf hats as they stand in a row singing carols loudly. Now what could be more indicative of the season than excited children singing traditional songs? Nothing...that's what!

Lobster Claus. A Christmas Re-boot!

I know what you're thinking. What the heck have lobsters got to do with christmas? Well, let me just tell you this about lobsters and christmas......

Actually.....I cant really remember why I thought it would be a good combination. I originally made this little fella back in 2009 when I began playing around with selling my designs online for the first time. In fact , I think he may have been my first ever attempt at something 'christmasy'. I'm sure, at the time, I had a good reason for pairing a lobster with a candy cane and santa hat, but for the life of me, that reason has escaped me. I do however still find the play on words (Lobster claws + Santa Claus = Lobster Claus) pretty freaking amusing.

But then I'm daft like that.

Anyway, this happy little lobster is perfect for your wacky friends, for seafood restaurants to send out as seasons greetings, for fishermen and divers, for marine biologists, for kooky kids, and basically for anyone who yearns for a zany christmas.

The Three Wise Elves and The Surprise Christmas.

I looked out the window the other day and the grounds-keeper for our apartment complex was putting up Christmas lights around the courtyard. This came as a shock to me for a couple of reasons.

First, as a work-from-home type, with all the mod-cons at my fingertips, I generally don’t pay much attention to what’s happening around the place, so I really didn't realise it was that time again. I know, I should be a bit more alert of the world but look.....INTERNET! GRAPHICS TAB! SHINY THINGS THAT GO BOOP AND PING! Not really an excuse I know. More of an explanation. A really lame explanation.

And second, it crept up on me without warning! Christmas is a sneak I tell you! Why only yesterday it was summer and we were doing fancy summer things! Now look. Grey, and cold and getting darker everyday!

I really do believe it happens faster every year you know. I remember grown-ups saying that when I was a kid, and I would look at them like they were berko in the coconut. For me, the time each year went by sooooo slowly. Even slower for me perhaps than most kids cause my birthday is only a week after Christmas, and most of the time my Christmas and birthday presents were bundled into one big mass of awesome on Christmas day. I would therefore usually get one super-amazing-day-of-gifts-and-win per year and then have 365 days to wait for the next one.

So when I saw those Christmas lights going up the other day I had a bit of a flashback to the 'SQUEEEE-PRESENTS!” Lee Lee of yesteryear.

Then grown-up “Get some work done, you lazy bones” Lee Lee smacked me in the chops and I realised that I should get some new Christmas designs out into the world. So I sat down with a sketchbook and a pencil and had a grand old time coming up with some fun bits and bobs for the silly season.

And these little fellas are the first guys to jump off that sketchbook page.

'Three Wise Elves' features three old and wise looking elves standing in the snow wearing Christmas patterned cloaks and tall, red winter hats, their long white beards almost touching the snowy ground. I've based them on traditional Scandinavian Nisse or Tomte, who are a very common decoration at Christmas time here in the Nordic Countries. It wasn't until well after I had started to add the products to the stores that I noticed how much they look like little yuletide gnome versions of ZZ Top. This realisation of course made me giggle like a mad woman. I mean just look at them. It's like the guitars are just gonna start up any second now.

Regular visitors may notice that there are a lot more places now where one can start getting hold of products with my designs on. Wouldn't you know, I've just gone and branched out and all. I'd had a few customers and friends express an interest in getting my stuff through some of these other places, so to add to the already hectic workload I am giving myself over the holiday season, I'll also be trying to update all these new sites and shops as well. Stay tuned for more updates as time goes by!

Monster Madness! New store and re-loaded range.

So my husband said to me a little while ago (in that sweet 'please-dont-take-this-the-wrong-way' kind of voice that husbands across the world have when delivering 'constructive feedback' to wives) that he felt that all of my crazy monsters, zombies and odd animal-headed people really didn't seem to fit in with some of the rest of my works at Lee Lee and the Bee.

I of course 'took-it-the-wrong-way' on principle, and proceeded to flounce off in a fit of diva-rage.
Well, not really. What I did do is have a good hard think about what he had said and came to the conclusion that he was a bit right. Not totally, because husbands are contractually obliged to allow wives to always be right (even if only 2% right, which this time around, was my total percentage of 'rightness').

So we both brainstormed some names for a store name and came up with.......*drumroll please....

So the new store, 'Here Bee Monsters' is now up and running and I am slowly going to start propagating it with new designs and old.

The first (and as of writing this, the only) design in store is actually one of the first monster characters that I took a hand to designing. He is the 'Alien Rock Pod '. Which is basically a happy blob with tentacles sitting on a rock. You know....the usual.

I've tried to make a fairly complete range in store so hopefully, there will be something for everyone. Everyone that is, who enjoys happy blobs with tentacles sitting on rocks.

"I Crochet" - another crafty range in store.

Yet another crochet inspired design, following closely on the heels of my recent 'Crochet or Die' design.

This one is a just goofy tongue in cheek slogan: 'I crochet so that I don't kill people' with a cartoon crochet hook. Very silly I know, but as most crafty people would know, making things is often a great way to 'wind down' after dealing with the stresses of modern life. And those stresses are often induced by other people, so I thought this would be a fun idea.

I tried to give the words a 'crocheted' texture and make them stand out a little so that it kind of 'pops' off whatever product it is placed on. Again, I have made this design a 'floating' image' so that folks can change the background colour to whatever they like so as to make it suit their own tastes.

'Crochet or Die' - new range in store

My latest obsession is crochet. I love it and keep harping on about how awesome it is.
Because of this, I recently started thinking about trying to come up with some fun and simple designs that celebrate crochet, and I guess, yarn arts in general. This is the first of those designs, 'Crochet or Die.'
It is a simple cartoon skull with yarn for eyes and a crochet hook in it's mouth. The yarn drapes down to read 'crochet or die'. I gave the image a distressed texture to it to give it a bit of a grungy feel and made it so that one could change the background colour of any of the products to suit individual tastes.

DRAMA LLAMA!

I love the phrase 'Drama Llama'. It makes me giggle. Because of this, I use it a lot. I call my husband a drama llama, my cat, the birds outside, the lady down at the shops who gets into a bit of a huff because the line is more than 2 people long.

The other day, on an internet forum I frequent, I was chatting with a friend and called her a Drama Llama. Another friend thought this was hilarious and declared that she'd wear a shirt like that. I of course responded that I'd make a shirt like that.

So I did.

And made a whole bunch of other products too. Cause that's just the type of drama llama I am. It's all or nothing I tell you! *flounce*

"Mr Robin Finds the key" - new in store

When I was young, my favourite story in the whole world was "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It's still high on my list of all time favourite novels, and I have probably read it 10 times or more. Even as a child, I loved the joy it imparted at the simple pleasure of being outdoors and the idea that becoming familiar with nature helped one grow as a person.

Recently, the urge to revisit the story overcame me, and I needed - yes, 'needed' - to read it again. Unfortunately, my copy of the book is way back in my homeland of Australia (somewhere in my grandfathers house I think) and I was hit by this sudden urge to read the book, with no immediate way to fulfill it. Then I came across librivox.org and discovered that 'The Secret Garden' (along with thousands of other public domain classic novels, short stories and journals) is available as a downloadable audio book read by some lovely volunteers. Oh Bliss! It didn't take me long to listen to the whole story all over again and revel in it's awesomeness once again.

Afterwards, I knew I wanted to create an image inspired by the story, and I knew the exact moment I wanted it to be - when the Robin helps Mary find the key to the garden. I remember the first time I read that part as a child and thinking to myself how magical it was and wanting a clever little Robin friend of my own. (Now that I am a grown woman, I realise how silly that idea is, of course - It's obvious it would way cooler to have a murder of trained crows instead!)

And so, this image was born. While making it, I also learnt some wonderful new techniques in photoshop and experimented with new ways of designing the products available for sale at Lee Lee and the Bee, so the whole experience became a fun little personal growth excercise!

Just a couple of new designs....

Hi, been a little busy of late but have recently updated Lee Lee and the Bee with a couple of new designs.

The first is yet another bit of steampunkery called 'Get Along' and features a dog-like beast of burdern wearing a leather gas mask out side of a domed city.

The second was just a silly little idea that popped into my head whilst I was doing the dishes. For some reason the 'hands on', dishwasher-free, simplistic way I was tackling the task made me think of Henry David Thoreau and of 'Walden'. About half an hour later, this resulted:

"Renewal" - a design donated to help Japan

The events in Japan have shocked us all and we'd all like to do something to help.

For my part, I have donated a design to help raise money to support the aid efforts. Any royalties I would have normally made on the sale of this design will go to the 'Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund' project on globalgiving.org.

This week's spoonflower competition theme is 'pointillism', and I got dotty and entered. The character is an old one. One of the first little fella's I places for sale at Lee Lee and the Bee way back when. But he is still ever so cute and I thought I would see if he would lend himself to the style. He did I think, and he looks chuffed about it.

For those of you that dont know, I started a new store recently, Bee-autiful Weddings, that will focus on just wedding invitations, gifts and stationery. So far it's going very well, and I'm enjoying the process of getting some old Lee Lee and the Bee designs up there as fully expanded wedding ranges.

Of course I will still be adding new designs to Lee Lee and the Bee, but for the new few weeks my main focus will be on getting the new store up and running.

I was talking with someone on a forum the other day, and the topic of the 80's came up. I had the whole notion of doing something that looked vaguely retro stuck in my head after that. So in playing around in photoshop, I came up with this bit of abstractness.

Illustration Friday: Chicken

I haven't posted an Illustration Friday image for a while, but when I looked in to see what the theme was for this week, I was pleased to see that it was actually related to the design I am currently adding to 'Lee Lee and the Bee'. CHIIIICCCCKKKKEN!

Mine is a hipster chicken, cause as anyone who has read my blog previously knows, I find hipsters hilarious. I'm a bit mean and I kind of like making fun of them. It makes me happy. So thanks hipsters for that. I also apprently like turning animals into hipsters and vice versa (See 'So Hip' for proof).

Anyway, originally I did this design as an entry into the River Cottage 'Chicken Out' campaign t-shirt competition, but alas it didn't win...or even place. But blow me down me if Brian Blessed wasn't one of the judges! Brian Blessed!!! The man with the voice and his very own zoo. He probably looked at it. Probably only once...and probably not not for very long but it made me giggle to think of it anyway. (If you get a chance, you should totally check him out on youtube as Henry 8.0)

Rococo Cocoa! Yum Yum Yum!

The upcoming Spoonflower competition theme is 'Rococo', and because I just love that style and era, I had to try my hand again. For some reason though, I kept spelling the word wrong in my head. And so this was born:

I couldn't leave it there though. Oh no. I had to go and make another range just for that tasty looking cocoa mug. You know, this one:

Penguin Awareness Day is comming!

Oh My! The joy! The excitement! Penguin Awareness Day - January 20th - is almost upon us!

I admit, untill a few weeks ago, I never even knew that such a day even existed, but as soon as I found out about it, the weirdness of it made me an instant convert. The penguin is totally a most deserving bird to celebrate, becuase although a large colony of them smells really, really bad (think 10 tons of rotting prawns left out in the summer sun for a few weeks. Trust me...I know) they are in fact one of the most facinating and fun birds in the whole avian kingdom.

Penguin Awareness Day is all about learning more about this lovely little creatures, and celebrating the fact that we are lucky enough to share a planet with them. So in honour of this most auspicious of days, I have created a whole category in the 'Holidays and Observances' section of Lee Lee and the Bee dedicated entirely to Penguin Awareness Day.

The first design up is a simple cartoon like drawing of a pretty blonde girl taking her penguin out for a stroll. What better way to celebrate the day?

Okay, I think this is going to be my last design for xmas this year. Mainly because I dont think I can fit any more in before the bit day (squeeeeee! Only 10 more sleeps to go!), but definately not because I have run out of ideas. My head is swimming in lots of lovely christmas weirdness that I will promise to get out before the next silly season rolls around.

This newest one its pretty self expainatory. It's Santa. Giving the thumbs up. And winking. He's a cheeky begger, aint he.

3 New Christmas Designs!

I've been a little busy of late, what with getting ready for the silly season here in Denmark, but I have had the chance in between christmas shopping and decorating and baking and what not to get 3 new ranges up at Lee Lee and the Bee to celebrate the season.

They are all very simple designs, reflecting I guess my attitude to the holiday; keep it easy and stress free and you'll have more fun. They also all reflect the fact that I am now ensconsed in the scandiavian version of christmas, as they all feature 'julehjerter' pretty predominately. Hearts were never a big shape when it came to christmas decorations back in Australia, so I guess the whole idea of them at this time of year just kind of baffles me a bit. Perhaps using them so much in these designs is my way of trying to acculturate myself to them.
