The market, located at Southeast 20th Avenue and Salmon Street, celebrated its opening season with music and a handful of new faces.

Among those is the natural beef grower, Highland Oak Farm, which had jerky and ultra-fresh cuts of beef. For the more sweet- or veggie-minded among us, there’s the pie-maker Queen of Hearts Baking Company that had both savory and sweet pies that are all gluten-free.

Farmers markets are opening in droves starting this week throughout the Portland area, including one in the South Park Blocks.

Farmers markets are opening in droves starting this week throughout the Portland area, including one in the South Park Blocks — officially the Portland Farmers Market at Shemanski Park — which is scheduled to run every Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. until Oct. 26.

Some markets are already open, as Leslie Cole of The Oregonian’s FoodDay reports . She added a link to an interactive map of all the farmers markets in the Portland area. Your produce — or lunch — awaits.

And this forecast helped: The National Weather Service predicted pretty perfect weather for Wednesday, but — and you knew this was coming — the rest of the week won’t be so swell. Expect more rain and clouds and daytime temperatures dipping back into the 50s. The weekend looks wet and cool.

The market, near the intersection of NE 7th Avenue and NE Wygant Street, welcomed back returning vendors and introduced four new vendors.

It will be open every Sunday through October 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Throughout May, shoppers can bring the plant starts they’ve bought from the market to a master gardeners booth and have them potted into containers free of charge. They can also get free gardening advice.

The Sunday opening included live music from the How Long Jug Band and the Gordon Neal Herman Trio.

The Shemanski Park and Buckman farmers markets will open next week.

The waiting is over. Or nearly so, in the case of farmers markets, which are set to open in droves starting this week throughout the Portland area. A few, such as the Hillsboro and Hillsdale farmers markets and the King farmers market in Northeast Portland, got a jump on things by kicking off their season last weekend, and Portland Farmers Market has been welcoming shoppers to the South Park Blocks since late March.

Check out interactive maps showing locations and details for Portland-area farmers markets.

So, yes, we’re thrilled at the prospect of all sorts of farm-fresh produce and artisan products coming into our culinary universe. Even better, while the old stalwarts are celebrating anniversaries (20 years for Portland Farmers Market; 15 for Hollywood), new markets are putting down roots in Portland’s neighborhoods, while others are extending hours or the length of their season and adding new perks for shoppers. Here’s some of what’s in store this season:

Portland Farmers Market, which manages six markets in the area, moves its Northwest neighborhood market — 3 to 7 p.m. Thursdays starting June 2 — from Northwest 23rd Avenue to Northwest 19th Avenue and Everett Street in the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral parking lot and welcomes five new vendors. The Pioneer Courthouse Square market returns Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting June 20. In addition, on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August, a few of the market’s food vendors will be on hand for the Noon Tunes Summer Concert Series from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Portland State University, King and Buckman neighborhood farmers markets all will offer cooking classes for kids ($5 per class downtown, requires advance registration; free for drop-in classes at King and Buckman). At Buckman, food preserving classes ($40 per class, $180 for a series of five) start May 12; for more information, go to portlandfarmersmarket.org. And if you need an excuse to get down to the flagship Portland Farmers Market Saturday mornings, consider what awaits you: not one but three pie-centric vendors, as well as Bingo Sandwiches, a collaboration between Pickolopolis’ David Barber and Wag Eggs.

The Interstate Farmers Market will open a Saturday market in the Kenton neighborhood, on North Interstate and Lombard avenues in the De La Salle North high school parking lot. Opening day is May 21, with hours from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lisa Bersani, the market’s manager, hopes the community will come out to see the new site this Saturday for its annual fundraiser, a pancake breakfast ($7 per plate, $24 per family). Proceeds from the breakfast — which features blueberry pancakes, real maple syrup and bacon from pastured pork — will help pay for cooking demonstrations and matching funds for shoppers enrolled in the federal food assistance (SNAP) program.

A new Woodstock Farmers Market opens Sunday, June 26. Thirty-plus vendors will be at the KeyBank parking lot at Southeast 46th Avenue and Woodstock Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays, says manager Emily Murnen. Expect lots of fresh produce, plus Kiyokawa Family Orchards, meat purveyor Deck Family Farm, a seafood vendor, and Feastworks with charcuterie and sausage sandwiches.

The big news from Hollywood Farmers Market, which opens for the season Saturday, is a plan for winter hours starting later this year in the Grocery Outlet parking lot on Northeast Hancock Street, every first and third Saturday from December through April. But a whole season of activities stands between now and then, including a 15th Birthday Party on May 21, the “Fest o’ Pesto” on June 25, and Crazy Eggplant Day in September. On the vendor front, they will be welcoming Sun Gold Farm, Ate-Oh-Ate with Hawaiian plate lunches, and Happy Campers Baking, selling gluten-free breads and treats. “Their setup will actually be a tent rather than the traditional market canopy,” says market manager Sarah Broderick.

Beaverton Farmers Market will be brimming with plant starts as it kicks off its season at 8 a.m. this Saturday. Along with the area’s biggest selection of nursery vendors, expect to see a few new faces such as Portland Creamery, with goat’s milk cheeses, and Curious Farm, with live-cultured foods, brined pickles and fresh herbs. Throughout the season, the market will hold Wellness Weekends, offering health screenings and other activities under a new solar canopy.

The Aloha Farmers Market, which tested a small market last summer on Friday afternoons, reopened April 23 as a weekend market, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in the Aloha Mall parking lot at Southwest 185th Avenue and Tualatin Valley Highway.

OHSU Farmers Market has shifted its Tuesday market schedule ahead by 30 minutes. It kicks off the season May 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of Mackenzie Hall, where market standards now specify that all vendors sell only produce grown without synthetic pesticides and herbicides and meat without added hormones and antibiotics. New this year is the weekly South Waterfront Farm Stand, open noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays starting June 9 on Southwest Moody between Curry and Whitaker. “It’s more than just OHSU,” market manager Eecole Copen says. “The folks at South Waterfront wanted a farmers market; we thought that we could start out with a farm stand, and the hope is that it will serve the Center for Health and Healing Community and all the folks that are living on the waterfront.” Thompson Farms will operate the stand.

Both the St. Johns and Montavilla farmers markets return this year with longer seasons and operating hours; St. Johns will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays from June 4 to Oct. 15; while Montavilla is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays from June 5 through October.

Oregon City Farmers Market just wrapped up a successful winter market, held on a dozen Saturdays and attracting up to 29 vendors. It returns for the fair weather season 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Clackamas County Public Services parking lot on Kaen Road at Beavercreek Road, and at a second location on Main Street downtown Wednesdays starting June 1. Among the vendors expected are Sweet Home Farms with pastured meat and eggs and Goldin’s Artisan Goat Cheese.

Hillsboro Farmers Market got under way last Saturday in downtown Hillsboro and Sunday at Orenco Station, with markets at the Tanasbourne Whole Foods Market and Tuality Hospital opening in June and July. At 11 a.m. on May 14, Spanish speakers can take a free bilingual market tour at the downtown Hillsboro market, starting at 11 a.m. at the information booth.

Most markets accept SNAP debit cards (part of the federal food assistance program), and a growing number now offer up to $5 in matching funds to shoppers. Look for matching programs at Portland Farmers Market’s King and Buckman locations as well as at the St. Johns, OHSU and Hollywood farmers markets.

Nate Meschke and Matt Cardinal, the two artists/bike builders behind Signal, have announced that they’ve outgrown their backyard shop and are set to move into a new, 2,000 foot commercial space on N. Williams Avenue that they’ll share with another Portland bike business, wheel maker Corsa Concepts.

Since they launched in February 2008, Cardinal and Meschke have built a strong following. Their bikes are known for meticulous details and an aesthetic presence that can only be achieved by two guys with art degrees in painting (they met while working as mechanics Bike Gallery). Recently, they nabbed “Best City Bike” honors at the North American Handmade Bike Show in Austin, Texas back in February.

The award at NAHBS helped Signal gain attention just at the time they needed it most — to boost awareness for the the launch of their Saltzman production bike. The Saltzman is a crucial move for Signal as it allows them to offer a product that is more accessible to a larger number of customers. Not only is the Saltzman available more quickly and for less money than a one-off, custom Signal; but it helps them increase sales volume, which can be key to a custom bike builder’s long-term survival.

Signal will share their new location with another Portland-based bike company, Corsa Concepts. Corsa specializes in high-end racing wheelsets and was founded just over one year ago by partners Mark Duff and Greg Hudson.

Future home of Signal and Corsa.

The two companies will set up shop in the building (on the corner of N. Williams and Page) that’s already occupied by Metropolis Cycle Repair and two other Portland bike builders, Ahearne Cycles and MAP Bicycles. Signal and Corsa will share about 2,000 square feet, which is “Way more that we will ever need,” says Signal’s Matt Cardinal.

Cardinal also tells us he has decided to leave his job at Bike Gallery to focus full time on Signal. “It’s an exciting time for us,” he adds, not just because the move and the launch of the Saltzman, but because Cardinal is expecting his second child in September.

The presence of two more bike companies on Williams cement the street’s reputation as a magnet for bike businesses. The influx of bike businesses on Williams, which is also one of the most highly bike-trafficked streets in the city, made the front page of The Portland Tribune in August 2010. Since then, bike accessory company Portland Design Works has moved to the Williams corridor as have Sweetpea Bicycles and Sugar Wheel Works.
