They are a national group in a long well-defined territory that deserve the right to national self-determination. "Much mystification surrounds Kosovar independence. It is claimed Kosova is a “mere province” of Serbia that happens to have an Albanian majority, and thus its “secession” is a violation of Serbian “sovereignty”. The alleged difference between Kosova and the other parts of the former Yugoslavia is that the latter were constitutionally fully fledged federal republics, which had the right to independence, whereas Kosova merely had autonomy within the Serbian republic."To address some of these issues, LeftCast spoke with the writer of the above lines, Michael Karadjis -- author of of Bosnia, Kosova and the West, published by Resistance Books in 2000.9.71 MB, 33:56 LeftCast February 25, 2008 embed_flv("240", "20", "https%3A%2F%2Fratbagmedia.wikispaces.com%2Fspace%2Fshowimage%2FLeftCast20080225.mp3?file_extension=mp3", false, false, "/s/mediaplayer.swf"); . Many now recognise the need for serious change in the way we produce and use energy, our transport systems, food production, urban design and forestry practices. Yet politicians are still mouthing platitudes while allowing corporations to continue to profit from polluting our atmosphere and destroying our ecosystem. The need for social change has become an urgent part of preventing catastrophic climate change. Can the market fix the problem? What is the real record of carbon trading? How can we build a social movement capable of averting this disaster? What models and experiences can offer real solutions? To strengthen the exchange of ideas and contribute towards that urgent action Green Left Weekly is organising the Climate Change Social Change conference from April 11-13, 2008 in Sydney. We are pleased to have confirmed: John Bellamy Foster, author of Marx's Ecology: Materialism and Nature, editor of Monthly ReviewPatrick Bond, Director of the Centre for Civil Society, Univ of KwaZulu-Natal; editor of Climate Change, Carbon Trading and CivilSocietyRoberto Perez, Cuban permaculturalist (featured in The Power of Community: how Cuba survived peak oil)Sandino Carrizales, Venezuelan environmental science student, studentactivist and community organiser. We invite your participation in making this more than just an exchange of ideas important as that is but a part of building up resistance to corporate-led climate change and strengthening the movement for sustainable development. If you would like to participate, including presenting a workshop, taking part in a panel, exhibiting your artwork or simply to register your interest in the conference, please email the conference organisers. Around the country there are literally dozens of new groups, campaigning for effective action on climate change. As yet, this new movement has not been able to gather in the one place. The climate movement convergence seeks to create this space in a one day forum, aiming to bring together the remarkably diverse climate change community we have here in Victoria, including local climate action groups, peak green groups, thinkers and strategists, social activists and other sectors concerned about climate change, and progressive businesses. We aim to provide an inspiring day of workshops, open space for discussions, an overview of the latest climate science, ideas on building a strong and vibrant movement, and the opportunity to ponder what opportunities are now present with a change in federal government. To offer a workshop, please see the website. We would welcome your involvement. Details: Saturday February 9, 9am – 5pm Northcote High School St Georges Road, Northcote, 3070 Costs: low income $15/ waged people $25 (no one excluded through lack of funds). The convergence is being organised by the Sustainable Living Foundation (SLF), Friends of the Earth (FoE), the Greenleap Strategic Institute and Sustainable Business Practises and is supported by a range of climate groups including Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE), Carbon Equity, Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, Environment Victoria, Futureye, Greenpeace, Moreland Energy Foundation, Western Region Environment Centre and Zero Emissions Now (ZEN). There are weekly planning meetings, if you would like to get involved please contact Cam Walker Further details will soon be available on the FoEA website and also at: Sustainability Convergence Draft 2008 Sustainability Convergence Program</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>politics,forum,green,left,socialism,activism,campaigning,democracy,anti,war,feminist,feminism,anti,racist</itunes:keywords><description>Cam Walker is national liaison officer for Friends of the Earth Australia. Mulrunji, an Aboriginal man, died in police custody on Palm Island in 2004. Hurley's charge was announced by Andrew Boe, Palm Island council’s legal adviser, to the 700 people who had gathered at Brisbane’s annual Invasion Day rally on January 26. The announcement changed the focus of the rally to a more conscious celebration of Aboriginal resistance. Since many indigenous activists had come to Brisbane for the protest from communities across Queensland and New South Wales, Invasion Day 2007 presented an opportunity to discuss and plan ahead. This was a major theme taken up by the speakers both at the rally and during the militant march that followed. 14:48 powered by ODEO Heard on the audio:Andrew Boe, Lyle Monroe, Sister Vicki, Sam Watson, Lional Fogarty, Jenny Monroe, Cathy Jackson, Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dancers,Lex Wotton, etc and the voices of the powerful and confident community of Qld Murris. Watson is a member of the Socialist Alliance, having stood against Queensland state premier Peter Beattie as a SA candidate in September this year. He is also the Alliance's endorsed candidate for the Senate at the next federal election. This is a recording of an address given by Watson to the Socialist Alliance National Conference in Geelong on October 29th, this year. Watson reviews the circumstances of Mulrunji's death and describes how the Alliance has worked with the Murri community both in electioneering and seeking justice for Mulrunji. 13.42 MB / 00:23:27 / 80kbps / 44 kHz / powered by ODEO</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>politics,forum,green,left,socialism,activism,campaigning,democracy,anti,war,feminist,feminism,anti,racist</itunes:keywords><description>mp3

Clements also found that Senior Sergeant Christopher Hurley caused Mulrunji’s death, and accused the police of failing to investigate his death fully. Mulrunji, 36, was found dead on the cement floor of his cell about 11am on November 19, 2004. Since the report has been handed down there has been a campaign by the Queensland Police Union, the Police Commissioner and the state government minister to disparage the report’s findings and recommendations. Clement’s conclusions have now gone before Leanne Clare, the state’s director of Public Prosecution for consideration as to whether charges will be laid. What the media labeled as a ‘ riot” erupted on the island on November 26, 2004 after the results of the inquest in to the death were revealed to the local aboriginal community. During this event the local police station and some other government buildings were burned to the ground. The Queensland Police Service flew in approximately 80 additional police officers to restore order. The case and its consequences were addressed by Murri activist and Socialist Alliance electoral candidate, Sam Watson, at a Alliance meeting on October 4th. This global problem is of massive proportions: From Planet of Slums “What is clear is that the contemporary mega-slum poses unique problems of imperial order and social control that conventional geopolitics has barely begun to register. If the aim of the “war on terrorism” is to pursue the erstwhile enemy into his sociological and cultural labyrinth, then the poor peripheries of developing cities will be the permanent battlefields of the twenty-first century. “Night after night, hornet-like helicopter gun-ships stalk enigmatic enemies in the narrow streets of the slum districts, pouring their hellfire into shanties or fleeing cars. Every morning the slums reply with suicide bombers and eloquent explosions. If the empire can deploy Orwellian technologies of repression, its outcasts surely have the gods of chaos on their side. powered by ODEO Source: The Current Program:Slum Cities: a shifting world May 7, 2006 Mike Davis coverage/articles in Green Left Weekly </itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>politics,forum,green,left,socialism,activism,campaigning,democracy,anti,war,feminist,feminism,anti,racist</itunes:keywords><description>Audio: Mike Davis is the author of many books on the urban environment and how that formats our political and social existence.
