I have been finding myself in Vermont the last five fall seasons. It is a great time to travel to this area because of the change in the season and the hint of the winter that is coming. I was told that Vermont has six seasons:

Summer
Fall
Sticks
Winter
Spring
Mud

I am not sure when I picked up golf. I think it was common as a kid that you would play miniature golf or "putt putt" or mini-golf and we had a couple of those places nearby where I grew up. At some point, in during my undergraduate studies, I took two golf classes, which involved hitting balls out in the athletic field, trips to the golfing range, and playing rounds of golf at nearby golf clubs. My first and only set of clubs are Tommy Armour 845s which were released in 1987. So sometime within a year or so of then was the time I started playing more consistently.

Fast forward about 20 years and our third daughter was born. To me, it did not seem the appropriate thing to tell my wife something along the lines of "I know you have been watching the three girls all week, and I am going be gone for the next four to five hours... So quietly that became a second time period of about 20 years. During this time, I probably went to the range (does Topgolf count as a range?) less than five times and do not recall playing a single round of golf. For this last time in Vermont, I was asked whether I wanted to join a group for a round and I said sure if they did not mind having someone who had not played for about 20 years. To prepare for the round, I went to the local golfing range twice and then had planned to play about nine holes just to get an estimate of distance with my clubs. Whether it was lack of playing or age, I estimate I had lost about 10-20 yards per club. When I asked "AI" how much range a golfer would lose during this time, that was right about on target.

I guess the question is now whether this marks the end of the second 20-year time block or maybe the beginning of a third 20-year period of time? My grips are nearly rock hard and need to be replaced. Maybe my 40-year old clubs need to be updated to a "Senior" set of clubs and shafts? I think if I hit the range or the links at least twice a month, I probably can maintain (or maybe regain?) my skills.

The course we played is called "The Mountain Course" at Spruce Peak Resort in Stowe, Vermont. Here you can see the main layout of the resort nestled in the mountains below Mount Mansfield.

I am not sure I would call this peak season for fall colors but the trees as you will see were very vibrant.

In the middle of the Spruce Peak Resort is a walking path that takes you pretty directly from the center of the resort to the Country Club. The resort has a number of other walking trails and bridges that I have posted some images.

Being the "Mountain Course" there is a lot of elevation gains and drops throughout the holes. A lot of the fairways are quite narrow and there is "OB" mostly on both sides with plenty of opportunities to lose a ball (or two or three). Once I was looking for my ball and I found someone else's ball instead...

This is hole 6 which requires you to carry over the water of Peregrine Lake. 194 yards from the blue tees and 139 yards from the white tees.

At one point there was about 20-30 minutes of rain and wind, but we kept on playing through that.

The course penalizes you if you cannot manage the course...can I say unforgiving...? Beautifully scenic winding through the hills with the color changes and the leaves turning red, yellow, and orange...

It has been about four months and I do not want for too long a time to pass before catching you up on this project of mine. It looks like this is the seventh installment in this series. If you want to view all of them in this series: click here.

At the Cloud Gate in the Millennium Park in Chicago, Illinois. I was trying to get it right smack dab in the center but obviously failed. It is amazing how a millimeter or two can make a difference and I really should have maybe taken a bit more time if I really, really wanted something perfect, but there were quite a few people around and I needed to hustle. The good news is that it sort of looks like a face. Maybe a clown?

Reflections on Milky Way...

There is just something about color...sometimes there is something about black and white. Then there is something about 1979 Milky Way Drive, Verona, WI. There is so much I could say about this place and there is so much I have already published about this place. The chain of events that led to my first visit in 2011, I have equated to remodeling your house and starting with the bathroom and because that needs some updating or remodeling, the flooring runs from the bathroom, down the hall, into the family room, and the kitchen of course necessitating updating the paint on the walls and the kitchen cabinets, the countertops, the appliances and of course the lighting.

I have lost count of how many times I have come on to campus through the past 15 years. Of course there were the COVID years where not very many visits took place and some family engagements that prevented me from attending too. Each visit is different, but each visit feels to a certain extent, the same.

This shows how my style and things I have done recently not necessarily to change, or to push, or to challenge, but just adds to what I do. It is probably best to maybe call it a project. To go somewhere I have gone before (or maybe not at all) but to look at some details and see how it comes together to make an image that is visually interesting.

Sometimes you just need to look at things a bit differently to the point you don’t know what you are looking at. Earlier this year Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital received its own branded transport helicopter. I was able to be there at the presentation which was the aircraft landing in the middle of the lawn.

I took some “standard” photos but thought I would have more fun with intentionally getting pretty close with the wide-angle lens on my phone to cause distortion to the point of questioning what you are looking at.

Maybe more images later on… hope you enjoy and have a great weekend.

Five years ago, I made the effort to take several photowalks around the blue hour in the days leading up to the opening of the Dennis and Carol Troesh Medical Campus. That campus and the towers that are a part of it opened on August 8, 2021.

The window of blue hour and the richness of the sky really depends on which direction you are facing and in general to me really lasts maybe 10 to 15 minutes. So when trying to fairly quickly walk around for some semi-random images from multiple aspects, I knew this could not be readily done in a single evening and in the end I made images from three nights.

I like this image more because the building complex is more centered in the crystal ball.

Derelict...

Is this 10 years in the making or 14 years of procrastination? If you look up the definition of a derelict boat, it is one that has been abandoned and neglected. The SS Point Reyes fits this as it was washed ashore in the 1990s (according to Wikipedia). It is on the mudflats along Tomales Bay near the town of Inverness, California. I have had the opportunity of visiting this site twice, separated by about 10 years. It appears that I never really posted images from the first visit so am including those in this post. So maybe I am a bit derelict in keeping up with posting images that I find interesting and want to share with my visitors such as yourself.

It looks like the SS Point Reyes has taken a beating from the elements, storms, and even a fire. If I was willing to prioritize more time for this location, maybe the outcome and results would be totally different but this is "Life Photography" and there was much else to see and do and so it was just a brief stop at a semi-random time of the day that fit in with pausing while driving by this area.

If you are looking for the site, there has been plenty of parking to the right of the Inverness Store. From the empty lot, you just walk on sand and dirt to the shipwreck location. There have been plans off and on to remove the remains so it may not be there by the time you go depending on decisions and actions.

Making images at a location like this is really hard to predict what you will end up with. Trying to see and use only natural lighting is a limiting factor. Clear and bright skies yield more sharp contrasting lines and shapes compared with waiting for clouds or near dawn or dusk times when you may have less light and more shadows and still some very large ranges of lighting between the shadows and the skies. As usual, I just make what I see and the situation and circumstances that I have.

On the last day in New York, we were just looking for a place to grab lunch prior to heading off to the airport. We ran across a place called Friedman's that had good options and did not appear to have a long wait. They are a family business and one of the pioneers has the diagnosis of celiac disease and so the menu is very much full of gluten-free options. Their menu also says that in the evenings they have "Singing Servers" which would be interesting to experience.

Just a quick post so that I can get going with the coming week. Hope you all that are following along with me have been surviving summer so far.

Earlier this year, I found myself in Chicago. Right around the time of this first image, I had no idea what was going on. Maybe that was just a realization of what happens all the time...meaning I have no idea what is going on. It was maybe 45 minutes later that the stress level went up...one of those moments in life where you question what is happening. But maybe that is for another day...

We were on our way to a restaurant and I was walking by this bridge and decide to frame up an image here. There was a chainlink fence and the openings are big enough that I can fit my Sigma 18-55mm f/2.8 lens between the wires and get a shot. The sun was about to set and it was time for dinner so did not have too much time.

I have been uninspired for a monochrome image and not sure this was really inspiration but thought that maybe it would work. I feel like this was sort of forced. I am not sure if this is a phase I am going through where I am not seeing things in monochrome or whether the images I am capturing are asking to be rendered in color. I think this works well enough with the minor adjustments that I have made.

These images are taken from the Ogden Avenue Bridge in Chicago as it crosses over the 90/94 Kennedy Expressway.

On my initial composition, I thought I would target about the middle of the middle express lane thinking that was close to the center of the freeway. And yes if you look, there are about 12 lanes in total and there are about six lanes on each side of center.

The thing that made me chuckle was that after dinner when walking back, I was thinking, no tripod, no problem, let us see if we can get some long exposures. I started looking for a place to make my composition and guess what I discovered? Someone obviously had come frequently enough to this location to just pull the wires apart and create an opening in the fence. I had not noticed this when I stopped by earlier, but I also did not feel this was the center of the image. It was the point that divided the different directions in traffic...

Well that makes it much easier...

Not sure what actually inspired me. It was the first time in Hong Kong. I was trying to think of something that would make you think of a city or an area or a region. Kind of an essence... When walking around, you can't help but notice that a great majority of the taxis are red. These are also known as urban taxis.

They may catch your eye. They certainly caught mine. I think the red contrasting with the other city life made them stand out. So that was the inspiration to maybe try and capture movement in a city that seems to be always moving (as most cities do) and the cars seems to be zooming everywhere at all hours of the day...

So whether it is the red taxis, other taxis, buses, or garbage/refuse trucks...here is a series of images of vehicles that I attempted to capture in motion.

This is not a common thing for me and maybe it just is not me at my essence. My last and maybe only post so far has been this one: The Out Of The Inn where the theme was movement. Indeed after this visit, I have been in several other major cities and after leaving, was thinking to myself, hey I didn't feel inspired to capture the taxis in that city with a similar motion blur... no inspiration, no project. no images...

There are three images in this post.

Many things going on in life and trying to let things settle down. Events seems to come in waves and surrounds life with many unknowns. Trying to look forward to the future. Trying to learn from the past. Trying to see things from different perspectives. Trying to make do with the lighting that exists. Trying to capture motion without a tripod. Trying to figure out if this should be a monochrome image. Trying to figure out which of the three are my favorite. Trying to figure out why it has taken me nine months to post any of these images. Trying to figure out if anyone also sees a face in the rocks or if it is just me. Trying to understand why hard drive prices have gone up so much in the past one or two years.

Images are from a walk on the beach when I was in the Laguna Beach area last year. Took many in this series and selected these three from among them as having the most interesting appearance of the water swirling around this area. I wish the sky had more fire in it, but oh well...it is what it is...

Souffle Pancakes...

Wow. Just briefly reflecting on what has happened in the past six months and periodically going back in time to memories such as this one. We found ourselves in Hong Kong late in 2025. It had been a while since we had been out of the country and especially to a destination this far away from home. This trip will likely end up with several posts depending on theme and how I choose to combine the images together. I decided to start off with this collection since it is an easy one.

This was near the hotel where we were staying and conveniently between the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) station and the hotel. We had never tried a Soufflé pancake before so thought maybe this would be an ideal time to explore.

The pancakes were great, light and airy and the tea latte was also very good.

Eight. Years. Later...

Here is a story behind the image...

About eight years ago, I made this blog post "What Does The Future Hold..." and it was picked up by someone in the Loma Linda University School of Medicine Alumni Association. It would serve as inspiration for this image months later.

So I have been serving as one of the school marshals for commencement weekend and so the thought was something along the lines of "Hey wouldn't it be a great idea since you are right there in the middle of graduation to get an image using a crystal ball in some manner?" After tossing around ideas from various times in the ceremony such as the beginning during lineup, or maybe getting ready to march in, or during the speeches and awards, or while receiving diplomas, or during the recessional, or during the recessional, or during the recessional? Don't wait until all the families and friends are surrounding the graduates in celebration? So during the recessional what would be the most symbolic except the very last graduates walking out? Right after they had received their diplomas and took the physician's oath?

This then goes to the whole mental exercise of what I call 98 percent planning and two percent execution (those are made up statistics of course...). Add to that a little bit of skill and a whole lot of luck and this is what results. Here are the key ingredients needed to pull this off:

Crystal ball
Camera
Time
Timing
Ability to hold the crystal ball into position with one hand
Ability to hold the camera with the other hand
Ability to frame the shot meaning hold the crystal in one hand, the camera in the other after adjusting for focal length, shutter speed, aperture
Then make the image

I am not sure exactly what I was thinking but looking at the settings I see shutter priority at 1/200 of a second that resulted in ISO 100 and f/7.1 which allows a greater depth of field. The camera was my previous Sony a6300 with the "kit" 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens which was beneficial for the size and capabilities. While I could have used what I believe would have been my Canon S120 which was my pocket point-and-shoot camera at that time because it has a "Manual" shooting mode, the a6300 has a faster (still not perfect) autofocus and better resolution with the larger sensor size.

So realistically I had somewhere between three and five seconds to execute on the above steps. Seconds of course after taking basically a four inch crystal ball out of my gown's left pocket, and taking my Sony a6300 from wherever I was carrying that. I honestly do not know where that was being carried. If I were to need to do this all over again, I probably would sling my current small camera bag under my marshal gown with the camera by my right hip since that is where the slit in the gown is that allows me to grab the camera from underneath the gown and pull it out for use.

So stand in the middle, dismiss students, probably four rows total. at some point towards the end, hand the mace to my co-student marshal, grab the crystal ball with my left hand, grab my Sony a6300 with my right hand, turn it on, set the zoom to the desired focal length (can't do this with one hand so I may have done these steps before grabbing the crystal ball), after the last students have vacated their rows and are starting back, hold up the crystal ball with the left, hold up the camera with the right, move both hands until the students are approximately in the center of the ball, all the while prep for focusing or focusing and maintaining the distance between the camera and ball constant enough to maintain good enough focus...

While I see some improvements I could have potentially made, I would say it is good enough. The subjects are in focus enough. Maybe I could have used a higher shutter speed since capturing images of nearby items sometimes accentuates movement and that requires a faster shutter speed. Exposure is good enough with minor adjustments. In all honesty, this is not straight out of camera and did require some cropping and rotation, but it got the job done.

And the image is forever part of the Alumni Journal...

Maybe this really should be called Blue and No Gold...

I recently found myself on the campus of the University of Notre Dame which is in Notre Dame, Indiana. You may think it is actually South Bend, Indiana but they have their own dedicated zip code. It was one of those times where you say to yourself "How do I feel?" "Do I feel up for a walk?" "Is there something else I would rather be doing?" "Do I have anything specific planned at this time?"

In the end, yes a walk commenced and was completed with absolutely no specific plan except to make it to the gold dome on top of "Main Building." Their website says that it only takes a fist full of gold leaf to cover the entire dome. Wow!

It has been about six months since my last "Up, Up, and Up" installment. In just reflecting about this series a bit more is that it give you the opportunity to "see" some of the places I have been without "seeing" where I have been.

Which one(s) are your favorites?

I found myself in Washington, DC around the time of the government shutdown. There were plenty of people around. I had some visitations in the Rayburn House Office Building.

I was also in the Hart Senate Office Building.

Sometimes I notice things and other time I am sure I miss opportunities.

I guess I have been given a bit of a reprieve of sorts… With this photojournalistic post, I am basically caught up on this unofficial photo tour of the Epic Systems Intergalactic Campus that you can find in Verona, Wisconsin. Over the many years, you will find a wide variety of images, collections, and projects and happily this post allow me to resume focus on some of the other images that have been building up over the past months or even maybe years…

In this post from twelve years ago called “Inspiration. Time. Focus.” I reflect on how the combination of those three things are really needed for me to put something together for this blog. So much has fallen by the wayside…sometimes for the good…and probably sometimes for the bad. I will come across something that triggers a memory of an image that has been waiting to be posted. I call that inspiration, but then where is the time and focus to remember where the image is hiding and figure out what to do with it…

Epic Visit Part 45: Creatures

So much has happened since August and I am not sure where to start. With Epic XGM 2026 right around the corner, maybe it is time to catch up a bit. This may seems like quite a lot of images, and I think it would be fair to say that the answer is yes! Taking and posting images form buildings on the Epic Systems Intergalactic Headquarters lends itself to photojournalist styles rather than just a few images. First, they a very novel and capturing many of the details through a very few set of images would be a challenge, especially with my typical limited time and limited access to ability to set things up how I would prefer.

The “Creatures” building is one of the last two buildings added to the “Wizards Academy” campus. They were both still under construction the last time I was on campus and were complete by the time of Epic UGM 2025.

Since this series of blog posts are really sort of a virtual tour of the Epic Systems Intergalactic Campus, I will just go ahead and post these images for your perusal.

Code of Conduct:
1. Never mention patient information to anyone. Never put unencrypted patient data on a mobile device.
2. Never look up information related to yourself, your family, or friends, Epic employees, or anyone else.
3. Never mention confidential customer information (e.g. financial information, new acquisitions, number of members or doctors or patient visits, strategies) to anyone. it is okay to mention applications and computer brands.
4. Never access a customer’s system without permission from the customer once a system is live.
5. Never change anything on a customer’s system without written permission, on file, from the facility.
6. Each of us is responsible for complying with the law or regulatory obligations.
7. Never put software developed outside of Epic into any Epic software. Any exceptions parentheses (rare) must be approved first by the head of research and development or that person’s designee.
8. Always use proper release procedures, including checklist and sign offs.
9. Always check for viruses before sending.
10. Do not share passwords that you use to access customer systems. You must have unique passwords for accessing user systems. If for any reason, you violate this, change your password immediately.

Dinner at Piatti’s…

Last year, I found myself in the Laguna Beach area and so was randomly trying to find a place to grab dinner and found a restaurant called Piatti’s so we went for it. It was pretty empty when we arrived there. Maybe it was early for the dinner timeframe. It turns out they have multiple locations in California and Texas.

Overall we had a good experience and would go back again.

As part of the decor they have a red Vespa (I believe).

They have multiple alcohol-free beverage options such as Arancia Ginger Soda, Athletic Brewing NA Beer, Italian Sparkling Limonata, Blood Orange Soda, and Hibiscus Rose Kombucha.

They bring a bread basket with some olive oil..

Rigatoni Bolognese. Pancetta. Parmesan

Life is life. So much happening everywhere. Seems to be a phase... It has been a long phase... Sometimes it seems like a snowball just rolling down the hill and ever gradually getting bigger and bigger as it gathers the snow around it... but it should eventually stop? Maybe from another perspective, maybe if I am at the center of the snowball, hopefully there is more good that is rolling with me than bad...

I am not sure what 2026 has in store for me or for all of us... I just need to plan ahead for as much as I can do so that I can just roll with life as it comes in my direction. Last month, we had the opportunity to go to the University of California at Riverside Arts California Museum of Photography and the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts. While I have been a long-time resident in the area and have walked by several times, I have never ventured in. So was past due...

Overall it is a small center and museum and so it does not take long to make it through the exhibits which is nice because sometimes larger museums seem to go on and on. Some comments below the images.

Who you first walk in there is a large space that looks like it would be perfect for recitals and receptions or other events.

They have a variety of displays. This was an exhibit under a clear enclosure.

It was nice to see this Ansel Adams exhibit on a project covering the University of California educational system and classic monochrome images of different campuses. Even though I have a limited exposure to the different campuses, I will admit to recognizing at least one of the images and the buildings captured.

There are multiple levels and from here you can see briefly the open space and vaulted ceilings...

A Star...

There are five images in this post.

This year has been full of ups and downs and at some point, I need to take a bit more time to process all that has happened. That is actually a specific task in a recent Mel Robbins podcast one what to do at the end of each year. I started to periodically listen to her podcasts this year and I think overall she has interesting topics and guests.

These images were taken while we were up in Berkeley for a short weekend trip. One of the places we wanted to try was called Cafe Etoile which translates to Cafe Star. In short the food was fantastic and we would be happy to go back again.

From a practical perspective if this blog is a barometer of free time and how much time I had for being creative, 2025 was not as good to me as the 2024 year and more in line with 2023. I will need to see where life takes me, what gets prioritized in my life, and the many ways I interact with the world around me.

Remembering...

There are two images in this blog post.

This post will remind me that as organized I would like to be with new or not so new projects that sometimes things just fall through the cracks. I was having a discussion with a friend about recognition and honor and I remembered this image. I proceeded to look at my blog because I knew it should have been part of my "Up, Up, and Up..." series where I have had hundreds of images posted over the past year or so. Except when it was not...I was looking and scanning through my blog posts thinking that it should have been part of something and failed to discover where.

So remembering...and honoring...words click and spark and images flashes and I remember places and events and decisions that will make impressions for a long time. In this case, I was taken to the Memorial Chime Tower found nearly in the center of the St. Olaf College campus in Northfield, Minnesota. What is unique about this tower is that it was built in 2003 to commemorate the lives of students who have died while enrolled at St. Olaf College. Each student's name is engraved on one of the chimes and they are tuned in the key of D for song "Beautiful Savior."

So yeah...remembering what I had thought was done but was waiting to be done (I guess)...

Hustle and Bustle 5...

This past week was full of hustle and bustle and so I thought it appropriate for me to share the fifth in this series. To view the previous posts which I believe to reflect this, click here. These images are a combination of a slower shutter speed to try and capture movement and street images of people hustling and bustling, While I thought about making some of them to be black and white (or monochrome), in the end, I made one into black and white and left the rest to be color.

I am trying to recover from riding planes, trains, and automobiles in the past five days which included being in nine states (including the District of Columbia even though it is not a state) and had its share of travel delays, but I am back and prepping for the coming week. Hope you all have a great week.

I am reaching the end of a bit of craziness of life. I am looking forward to a couple of weeks of "relative" calm. You will note that I put it in quotes because calm is in comparison to other times in life. In the middle of the past few weeks, I found myself in Laguna Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean on a day when the moon was setting just after sunset. This was very much unplanned on my part and very much in keeping with my blog of my photography revolving around life.

There is something about sunsets and it signaling that the day is about to end and things can settle down a bit. And even if on this day, a lot happened after this image was made, this moment in time, made me slow down and think about what was happening and what was the composition I was trying to capture given the circumstances...

There are two images in this post.

The last couple of weeks (or even months) have been a bit brisk. Many things came into play this past week and resulted in some ways slowing down the pace and life. We spent some time in Stowe, Vermont and while we have been here in years past, it looks like I have only posted a few images so am probably way overdue and that is what happens when other things take priority...

In this post, this is by no means meant to be a direct comparison of cameras or capabilities. Like many things in life, the ultimate decision is which image impacts the viewer in a bigger way. So without looking at any of the info data, which of the following two images appeals to you? 1 or 2... A or B...

Can you tell the difference between the two images?

The photos in this post were made with my iPhone 13 which still works well enough for me. Some of the other travel photos are with my Sony a6300 or Sony a6600 (which I would replace with the more recent released Sony a6700) with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens for Sony e mount.
